I had completed a probationary period at another agency a couple years ago, but last year I took a promotion at a new agency and and therefore had to start a new probation. My boss told me she's been asked by her management to justify keeping me, and she said she's doing everything in her power to make that happen. But I strongly suspect the new administration will ultimately do a blanket firing of every probationary and excepted service employee across the gov't, regardless of any justification to keep them. People don't realize the president isn't interested in a case-by-case analysis of how necessary each employee is and instead wants to burn the federal gov't to the ground so power is consolidated under himself.

One thing to consider is that if you plan to take a buyout, whatever that may be ..if it is 40K there will be a taxable amount taken out of that, but depending on your circumstances, you could contribute the maximum amount to the TSP prior to separation in this final year in anticipation of the buyout check, essentially pre-depositing the buyout in the TSP before it arrives. It's also a good idea to just invest that buyout and make it an ongoing income generator, rather than spending if if at all possible.
Similar thoughts here. For me, I'm mulling over an early retirement (semi-retirement) if it's offered. The idea of getting immediate retirement funds at 56 (although lower than if I left in my 60s) and access to affordable health care is a consideration. With the healthcare available, I can choose to work fewer hours in a less stressful job and start having more time to spend with family and attend to my health. Although it's scary to leave in peak earning years, money means nothing if you don't have your health.

I just read in the works, they will up the buyout to $40k and service time reduced from 20 to 15 for early retirement. If this is true, I already have 15 and want to bail now!
Where would you put the 40K (minus taxes of course)? Ride it out for these four years and put 30k in your Roth TSP each year instead. I knew someone that took the last early retirement, which wasn't enough, and now she works as a lunch lady for extra money.
It sucks that I am 49 w/just under 23 years of service, so I'm less than a year away from the age for qualifying for VERA to even have it as an option to consider.
So, what I know is that Congress has slipped a bill in the last Continuing Resolution Dec 2024, however, it is only for $25k. Last VERA VISP I was involved in was 2006 as a supervisor. We had to reduce the work force by 30 Sept and we only gave everyone 2 weeks to decide. Once you sign the form and accept the VERA VISP you cannot recind or change your mind. You lock in your decision with your signature. I had a couple employees try and change their mind, but HR would not let them out of the agreement. So, if you decide to accept the $25k, it will be taxed at about 30 percent. I am planning on retiring in Dec 2025. If they offer an early out, I have done the math and it is not worth it. I will make much more over the last 3 months of the year, and also the Annual Leave I will be paid out gets taxed in 2026. So run your numbers, it could cost you thousands if you accept a VERA VISP at the wrong time of the year.
The wrong time of the year always is the first part of the year. In addition to things you said when they last offered VERA companies weren't using AI to post fake job postings to show solvency to shareholders which should be illegal. You'd also be barred from being a government worker again for 5 years (unless you want to be a non-beneffited contractor). This nimrod "president" should be president of the sweater knitting club in cell block b in Leavenworth KS vs putting government workers who sacrificed blood and sweat in public service in this kind of stress over job security they earned.
That is a very low amount and I agree with you, that is only 3 months pay for me. Not worth it. I'm in DoD and not sure if there will be a RIF or even buyouts for our department. Folks ask me aren't you close to retirement? I tell them I'm making more money than ever and this the best job I've had, why retire? I can take a 5 or 6 week vacation, we work a compressed schedule (that may go away) and I'm one of the senior guys left in our department, like #3 in seniority...plus I helped get my current supervisor hired to his position. If we do go back to 5 eight hour days, I'll alternate using LS and AL for one day off per week except for holiday weeks.

@ Everyone's been jealous of CSRS retirees...I entered FERS when it first started (mid 80s). CSRS' defined benefit dies with you/survivor. Unless you also contributed to TSP, which many have. FERS ain't too shabby either. I just retired 30 days ago with 38 years. While my FERS/SS is only about 65%...a TSP withdrawal of only 2.25% (vs 4%) nets me the same disposable income I had while working. My wife will claim 50% of my SS also in 18 months. Lastly, my TSP is part of my estate...currently well into the 7 figures and I didn't contribute (idiot me) the first 5-6 years.
My heart goes out to federal employees who don't have choices. I hope they offer buyouts, but it's clear that they're using intimidation first. That's the heartless corporate way.
So the order I understand they are preparing for is, return to work, then terminate probation, then VERA VISP. That is the plan. OPM should have the details for your agency out by end of February 2025.
Federal employees feel under appreciated and unloved? I wonder why? Get back to work like the rest of society. Their just pissed off because the gig is up. Just admit it was a good 4 or so year run and move on. There is absolutely no sympathy for federal workers anywhere. Time to be an adult again.
I would like to try to understand, with all of the heavy burden that is on the government with certain departments, what is the reason for cutting? isn't that going to impact the burden even the more? or is this really about replacing the old.... to put in the new? not necessarily getting rid of?
I think this era is completely different because he’s bringing private sector advisers who will run the government like the private sector. They will accomplish it and federal carrier employees that have never worked in the private sector will be in for a shock. You will be disposable.

I’m 50 with 30+ years and zero debt. I’d probably take it if they offer it to me. I’ll go to my shop and make bird houses or something. 😆
Smart move. Use pallet wood to make them. You can find free pallets everywhere, pure profit for you. Thinking outside the box, no way you’re a federal employee 😂
Sounds wonderful.
Good information to consider. Thank you!
Great job, Ralph.
I just read in the works, they will up the buyout to $40k and service time reduced from 20 to 15 for early retirement. If this is true, I already have 15 and want to bail now!
If they move it from 20 to 15, it may be time to clean out my desk!
That seems fair!!! Take it. You don't want to be working for a nutcase.
Goes to show how much you think of your essential job as a bureaucrat.
Where would you put the 40K (minus taxes of course)? Ride it out for these four years and put 30k in your Roth TSP each year instead. I knew someone that took the last early retirement, which wasn't enough, and now she works as a lunch lady for extra money.
@@thomaschamberlain9811 I am not a slave like you.
Clear and concise, thank you!
I just got an email about the plan for federal employees. They were kind enough to attach a resignation letter with it.
Amazing
Hearing too many conflicting stories concerning "pension". what happens to my pension if I accept the buyout!?
Gone. All you got is your TSP.
It sucks that I am 49 w/just under 23 years of service, so I'm less than a year away from the age for qualifying for VERA to even have it as an option to consider.
Just one more year! They'll likely offer it across consecutive years. Gives you time to look at your finances and consider it.
@kristinab1078 🤞
Yes, the buyouts are here.
Thank you! Great advice!
@flashgordon6238 You are in a perfect spot!! If you are still enjoying your job and still being effective, then we would want you to stay! In fact you are a benefit to the United States public because of the deep state knowledge you bring to your job!! I am retiring at the end of the year with or without a buyout. I am a retired 0-5 with 100 percent VA and can take SSAN anytime. I feel like I have done my duty and it is my time to enjoy my family time.
@@johngrubb5486 Thank you Sir for your service! I was a Navy Helicopter Crewchief with three tours in Antarctica, but only a 4 year stint to get my electronics background. 22 years federal service and still feel like I'm in my 40's even though I just hit 63. I often think I should have just done the 20 in the Navy and retired to a job like I have now. However I did use some of that time to pick up a Master's Degree and move up to GS-12 quickly.
I’m curious to know how you would know how you knew the government would offer a buy out two days ago.? Did you work on project 2025?
Thanks for the nice overview.
Still won't bite, I want my FERS 1.1%
Yup, got mine last august.
Same! 5 more years, ugh
@thomasparks6822 rub it in ;)
how many years you have till age 62?
Great video as always Ralph!
My heart goes out to federal employees who don't have choices. I hope they offer buyouts, but it's clear that they're using intimidation first. That's the heartless corporate way.
You mean the corporations that must remain financially viable so they can pay for government jobs to exist? Tell us more.
@ChillWill-q5x Excuse me? Who pays?
@@ChillWill-q5x Poor management
So the order I understand they are preparing for is, return to work, then terminate probation, then VERA VISP. That is the plan. OPM should have the details for your agency out by end of February 2025.
@ Are YOU paying for government? Where do you think money comes from, Unicorn poopers?
Federal employees feel under appreciated and unloved? I wonder why? Get back to work like the rest of society. Their just pissed off because the gig is up. No more lounging around in their pajamas and signing on late. Now they actually have to show at the office and make believe they’re working at a desk. Just admit it was a good 4 or so year run and move on. There is absolutely no sympathy for federal workers anywhere. Time to be an adult again.
We’ll have a HUGE brain drain in the government! Also, how will all those retirement papers get processed by OPM? How many of them will leave as well?
I would like to try to understand, with all of the heavy burden that is on the government with certain departments, what is the reason for cutting? isn't that going to impact the burden even the more? or is this really about replacing the old.... to put in the new? not necessarily getting rid of?
I think this era is completely different because he’s bringing private sector advisers who will run the government like the private sector. They will accomplish it and federal carrier employees that have never worked in the private sector will be in for a shock. You will be disposable.
You know many folks in the federal gov had private positions before right? Government positions arent easy to get.
And look how consistently the " private sector" has gone bankrupt.
Please explain how the agency can place the employee on paid administrative leave for seven months when the Administrative Leave Act limits administrative leave to 10 days.
He can’t 😏☠️
Interesting proposal today. Not really much of an incentive to commit to leaving now, except for those folks who have hit MRA already and want to retire in place until Sept 30th.
😮 72 hrs to decide… I would want at least a week to think it through.
They just announced government buyouts for 2 million workers

With today's Buyout announcement, who do we talk to for verification on how this affects my pension? I have almost 21 years, but turn 60 in mid-February. So, just a wee bit worried about the timing before my 60th birthday. Does the deferred resignation add to the time of federal service? Would I apply for retirement date of Oct 1st? Working for the federal government full-time with doing ad-hoc telework 2 days per week, 3 days a week in person. I hope I can qualify if this applies to all federal employees and not just the full-time remote. I'm Title 38 nursing.

I am eligible for a VERA, but I am on the fence. It is my understanding that if I was riffed, it would be called discontinued service retirement. I would still be able to keep my health insurance and would receive the same pension because I am over 50 with 22 years of service. Also. If I received a severance package it would be more than a VSIP. VERA sounds better than a RIF, but in my case I don’t think it is. I guess I will just wait it out and see what happens.
Does this prohibit unemployment benefits?
Rude awakening for all the right wingers working for the federal government who thought Trump wasnt talking about them
Trump still WAY better for the country overall.
They DO NOT know what they are doing. Stop saying that. These actions are hands down going to be tied up in court.
Here comes more contractors. Wonder how many of these big contractor companies donated to Congressional and Presidential campaigns. Hmmmmmmmm
Of course….same reason we have to go back 5 days a week. His buddies in Commercial Real Estate need their lease revenue to improve.
Agreed. It is never about saving money. It is always about diverting salary expenses from federal employees to contractors so the campaign donors can collect 10% off the top for doing nothing.
Contractors get the vast majority of their contracts from these federal programs trump is steamrolling.
@@TheRabidfan no they don’t. You’re just paying that to defend Trump. The companies that own those contracts have airtight contracts that pay out if they are ended prematurely. This is all a money grab by the campaign donors behind Trump.
