Question: They are now offering a VERA with this resignation offer. I'm 54 now, I had planned to retire at 57 with 30 years of service. If I take the VERA with the Resignation Offer, would I still get the FERS Supplemental add-on with my pension from age 54 until 62?
Great question. Yes, you can get the FERS supplement under an early out retirement. However, the one difference is that the supplement wouldn’t start until your MRA (minimum retirement age). Source: hawsfederaladvisors.com/fers-early-out-retirement-vera-and-vsip-the-ultimate-guide/#5
I have worked from home since the pandemic and had no interest in returning to the office. I was planning to retire mid-year but was seriously looking at moving that up to the end of February to avoid the return-to-office mandate. So this "deferred resignation" offer at a minimum lets me continue to work from home until the time I was planning to retire. At most, it gives me admin leave pay and benefits through the end of the FY even though I was otherwise going to retire.
I like your logic, but word is that agency HR offices are blindsided by this. No one has the answers. I don’t think the promises are going to materialize.
@@rickm8456 In the example of the above commenter, it may be a good offer. It's too sudden to know and Feb 6th is too soon to make a fully informed decision as significant as this one. I'm hoping for VERA next year w/ a good VSIP.
Please visit the federal employee subreddit for more information! Please talk to others in your organization! This doesn’t make sense. Federal employees can only be on paid administrative leave for a maximum of 10 days per calendar year. The 8 months makes no sense. This would require Congressional allocation of funds. And that’s just two issues. This whole thing makes no sense with the reality of the Federal government policies and processes. It makes no sense. Why would the person claiming to be cutting government waste put thousands on 8 months of paid leave? Remember, he offered a similar deal to Twitter employees then stiffed them on severance pay
Ready for an update video. Probably need one daily from now until Feb 6. OPM head Chuck Ezell granted VERA to all agencies in Friday 1/31. This is a big deal.
With a deferred retirement, would you still be able to select survivor benefits, life insurance, dental, and vision? When would your accrued leave be paid? It takes months for OPM to process retirement request today, can you imagine how long it will take starting in October ?
With a deferred retirement, you wouldn't be able to keep healthcare (which is a huge benefit for retired Feds), but you would be able to keep healthcare with a postponed retirement. (The difference between the two is that with a deferred retirement, you will have left Federal service prior to reaching your MRA.)
@@davidw7776 If you apply for retirement at least 90 days in advance…it goes pretty smoothly. You may defer your retirement on your own….this is no benefit to the employee.
It's because we have never operated like this before! This is Elon Musk being sent to devise a plan to bait govt employees and then don't pay them like he did his employees.
Employee groups and experts warn feds not to accept ‘deferred resignation’ offer The lack of a legal underpinning for the purported eight-month severance package, and Elon Musk’s history of offering-and then revoking-severance payments have many federal workers wary of the measure.
Please do your Research! This sounds to good to be True! Last Thursday any Federal Offices that were part of Diversity, Inclusion, Civil Rights were forced to leave their jobs. They were told that they are on Administrative Leave and their Benefits and Pay would be covered! Fast Forward to Tuesday January the 28th! These employees are receiving RIF notices in the mail! So to some up! Please make the right decision!
Last year, there was a VERA/VSIP in my Department. Some sub agencies asked for and got it, others turned it down. Employees applied-- not all accepted. This offer (and email) is similar to when Musk asked Twitter employees to resign or stick around. (IIRC, Some of those who resigned had to sue because they said Elon didn't pay the promised severance) I'm fairly certain that if employees who resign don't get paid their full salaries-- expect the government to say VSIP prevents them from offering more than $25,000.
So the offer is that is you quit they will pay you for 6ish months? Doesn't seem like a great offer unless you were going to quit anyway or on the cusp of retirement.
@ Yes, I do. There are scenarios in which this could be beneficial for some employees. For example, for people who have been considering going to the private sector, they could take the 8 month severance while they look for a new position and still have the benefits they earned with them. However, I don't think many will end up taking it b/c it's too rushed and clarifications are needed. In the future, they may end up offering VERA/VSIP to more agencies, which would be received better, especially if it was a decent VSIP.
Agencies are LIKELY to adjust and give you paid administrative leave. They can also reduce your duties. The letter does NOT say most employees will be on paid leave. The FAQs states that, NOT the pre-written resignation letter you have to acknowledge. I want someone to get this right!
Well, why aren't they tranparent on every detail? There was more information in the packet we signed to telework during the pandemic than there is here. Sketchy.
Generally, a normal retirement takes awhile to process (3 months)-- you have to show just about every SF 50 to show the number of years you worked for pensions calculations, case backlog, etc. I
There is nothing saying that they won’t “realign” your position after you take this resignation and then you are effectively “fired” then you don’t get anything.
It's chaotic to say the least...the administration does not understand (or care) about the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th order of effects. Productivity across all agencies has dropped some not-so-insignificant amount as people are scared, confused, or both about what the future holds. In my other life, I'm a professional board game designer and developer. This is as if we put a bunch of tokens and dice on the able and had people start moving them while I'm writing the rules. It's maddening.
Anytime you are being rushed to make a quick decision that weighs heavy on your future that should be a red flag to deny, especially when you don't have all the details of the resignation. IE; This offer is available today only when buying a car is a perfect example. I would only take this offer if I was planning to retire by the end of this year anyways.
So many questions with this offer. What happens to our pension if we are not currently eligible? What happens with unused annual leave? 7 days to decide on this offer is not much time.
It could work well for people planning to leave soon, but clarification is needed and the deadline is way too soon to make an informed and wise decision.

What do you think the answer will be for someone going through the process of FERS Disability Retirement? That is the situation I'm in. VA retirement counselors do not know if I will still be able to process for the Disability Retirement because OPM could deny me. My packet will soon be transferred from VA to OPM.
Anybody here with the DoD? We got the email also and don't even know if it applies to us. The memo says certain "national security" positions are ineligible. I'm an Army Civilian
My situation is that I am going through the process of FERS Disability Retirement. My packet is close to being transferred to DFAS and OPM. VA retirement counselors do not know if I take the resignation offer if I will still be considered for Disability Retirement. I wish to take the offer and remain at home during OPM deciding my case. So I'm basically left to decide without retirement counselors knowing the answer.
My 20th years of service is actually this month but I don’t have the age to retire. I can’t go back to the office for personal reasons. What would happen if I resigned? Can I start collecting my pension at 60 years old as you mentioned on another video?
Thing is, the federal budget is operating under a CR right now. Eventually, Congress will pass a full budget for 2025...but is under no obligation to allocate funding for any such resignation offers; OPM can promise anything they like, none of that is binding on Congress unless they choose to honor it. I'd also have considerable concerns that accepting such an offer would also leave you ineligible for short-term benefits like unemployment, since you are doing a voluntary separation...and, there's the history at Twitter where E. Musk made very similar promises, down to the title of the resignation offer being the same - then refused to pay out compensation once the separations were final. Finally, by all appearances this is NOT a VERA/VISP, and people need to know that very clearly in terms of how it may affect your eventual retirement benefits.
Amen! To all the Fed employees complaining about going into the office... Cry me a freaking river. It's called work for a reason. Wanna sit at home? Then quit! Why is this complicated to understand?
Many of us have been going into the office several days a week but you want to pay us to stay home on administration leave until September? That's bullshit coming from the ultimate con artist grifter in chief
If you’re not eligible for retirement, and you take the buyout /resignation, what happens after sept 30? Are you able to apply for ur next federal Job or are you not allowed to comeback for good?
Assuming the hiring freeze has been pulled, sure. But don’t count on that for quite some time. I’m guessing we’ll see internal only hiring for a few years unless it’s DoD related. Then maybe there will be some external applicants job openings.
Congress will need to increase the debt limit as early as June 2025, and before the 2025 August recess at the latest. So if they do not pass a bill, we go into lockdown, which mean NOBODY GETS paid in civil service. So what does that mean for the ones that quit? Resigned? Do they get back pay?
We are having a free webinar later today discussing this. Feel free to sign up here: app.hawsfederaladvisors.com/Federal-Employee-Resignation-Offer-Free-Webinar-Feb-3-2025
The offer is a scam with no legal basis or funding for the promises offered. Federal funding runs out in March. The offer promises funding beyond that time. It’s a full-blown scam.
I'm considering taking an early retirement with 25 years of service but not sure if I can get another job before my early retirement date or do I have to wait until after that date to get another job.
The only incentive is not having to work in that time. So if an agency has you continue working, its for nothing. Id like clarification on that because im considering this.
Another Question, well, more of a verification: I'm 54 now. I turn 55 in August of 2025. From what I understand, if I take the Resignation Offer, VERA, and turn 55 in the year these were offered, I can now access my TSP at 55 instead of 59 and a half WITHOUT penalty. Is that true?
If I plan to submit my MRA+10 retirement in June or July for December 2025, does this Deferred Resignation Program in any way interfere with my retirement?
I'd have 14 years service after buying into FERS. Can I still get a my retirement with only 14 year? I'm 53 but OPM says you have to be 55. If anyone can answer that Please.
Minimum Retirement Age is 57 with 30 years of service, 60 with 20 years of service, or 62. I believe you can take it at 57 but it is reduced by 5% a year so 25% less than what you will get at age 62. Also, if you leave federal service and later apply for your pension then you will lose your health benefits.
My MRA is 11/21/2025 with 32+ years.. I asked about question #3 on opm fact sheet about waiver ( extension) being close to September 30 and no answers giving so far. but i thought it was worth asking.
One thing people are also missing is this whole thing is going to crush retirees. Insurance premiums will go through the roof because it will be a lot smaller group. Possibly even make the pension attacked in the future
Can you comment on how would this all work, if someone is planning to take FMLA parental eave starting the week of Feb 10? Can the employee do the FMLA leave, do the required 12 week pay back, AND, also do the voluntary resignation, with pay of approximately 8 months, which essentially will delay the resignation day beyond Sep 30?
Do you think I can use my unused sick leave (5 months) to use to make it to age 62? with this program ? I want the 1.1 % multiplier but won't be 62 by Sept 30 .. but just need a few more weeks to hit age 62 at the end of 2025. I was planning on retiring in 2026 at age 62 to get the 1.1 of my high 3 . (I have the years in to retire now and the age).
As far as I know, the only way to get the 1.1% multiplier, is to actually work it. Unused sick leave will not get you there, only used to increase your service time, if that makes sense.
"Just One More Year" Is that bonus worth it? If. If you live to 90, it's worth $1.1m. At 90. Not at 60, or 61. Is it worth it two of your healthier years of retirement? Is it worth not being in the drama that has erupted and will continue for at least two years in the hallways, cafes, and over Teams? That's a very subjective and personal question we all have to ask in response to "Just One More Year" thoughts on our heads.
Great deal for those that planned on retiring this year before sept 30 anyway! Id laugh in their face if my agency thought i was going to come in for turnover.
If you've reached your MRA already, can you take advantage of the deferred offer and retire on Sept 29th and still receive all of your health benefits?
This is the same email Musk sent Twitter employees. They quit, and he didn’t pay them a dime. Just so you know, OPM doesn’t have the authority to make offers like this. Only your agency personnel department can do that, and if Congress has not funded this it will not happen. There is no such thing as a deferred resignation program.
Let’s make it clear, this IS NOT A BUYOUT! This is Administrative Leave. With a Buyout, you receive cash in hand at your departure. This is only good for a person who planned to retire this calendar year! This is a crap offer! 😂
@ my comment was in a Buyout, a person receives cash (payout) upon departure. In this so-called Trump Buyout you receive your standard pay/benefits, which equates to Administrative Leave, hence this is not a Buyout.
Exactly correct. The corporate press keeps referring to this as a buyout, being as they are, in service to Dear Leader. This is just an attempt to scare and demoralize the Federal workforce. It's not working.
This is a better offer than $25k or even the $40k cash buyout provided you dont have to keep working. You get full benefits health insurance, retirement match to Sep 30. You can also get another job. Just would want confirmation that you can retire and get your annuity.
@@GuestRead Be careful with another job. Federal employees (and you are still an employee during this time) are generally not allowed to work for a company that does business with the federal government.

They aren't going to pay you to September. Good luck if you trust Musk's email.
The only people taking this deal are newbies, eligible for retirement and angry birds.
it’s not a deal….They can’t inquire about retirement, and OPM can’t tell them who has submitted their retirement….so this is the only way they know.
He doesn’t even have the authority to make this offer. He’ll screw everyone over like he does with all his contractors.
I work payroll and must have received 20 calls like I know more than the email.
It's because we have never operated like this before! This is Elon Musk being sent to devise a plan to bait govt employees and then don't pay them like he did his employees.
Employee groups and experts warn feds not to accept ‘deferred resignation’ offer
The lack of a legal underpinning for the purported eight-month severance package, and Elon Musk’s history of offering-and then revoking-severance payments have many federal workers wary of the measure.
What is the difference between deferred retirement and deferred resignation???
If at the end of September you still don't have age and time-in-grade requirements met for retirement, you're just an unemployed ex federal worker.
Every morning I wake up to an email sent from them with some bs. Its bullying.
I get them too. It's not bullying...no one is forcing you out with this offer. If you don't want it, don't take it

Hi, the news said not applicable for USPS , military
You said retire after that date, but benefits will be affected if resign date is prior to retirement date.
The letters say must retire before Sept 30.

Ight violate tge Anti-Deficiency Act…. Hmmmm????
My OPM fork in the road email went into junk mail folder !
Delete it
I actually thought the "Fork in the Road" was a phishing email because it sounded so damn stupid
Isn’t it significant that the word ‘resignation’ is used? Doesn’t that mean you forfeit some benefits?
My wife planned on a 10/31 retirement this year; so why the heck not - her department supervisors are saying they can require her to work on.
So many questions with this offer. What happens to our pension if we are not currently eligible? What happens with unused annual leave? 7 days to decide on this offer is not much time.
Google OPM and redirection of force. There is a site that spells it out.

Thing is, the federal budget is operating under a CR right now. Eventually, Congress will pass a full budget for 2025...but is under no obligation to allocate funding for any such resignation offers; OPM can promise anything they like, none of that is binding on Congress unless they choose to honor it.
