    Passenger Axle Tube Seal: SKF 11800
    760x Big Joint shafts: 96-01 XJ
    It's finally time to get rid of that pesky Central Axle Disconnect and replace it with a much strong 1 piece axle with larger U-Joints.
    If you want the functionality of a 1 piece axle shaft but don't want to tear too much apart or can't find a new shaft, you can add spacers to the vacuum motor so that it is stuck in the locked position and will never disengage.
    If you want to do it properly, then this video is for you. The old 2 piece axle shafts will get replaced with a 1 piece axle shaft from a 96+ Cherokee to take advantage of the larger U-joints. The Vacuum shift motor and lines can be removed and the axle covered up. A seal needs to be placed inside the inner passenger side axle tube to keep the diff fluid inside the diff since the older outer seal will no longer work. The 4x4 switch in the transfer case will need some vacuum work done to make sure it still works if you like your dash lights or you can swap in an electric one.

    Why not put outer axle seals in as a backup or to replace the inner seals ,?
    You can buy aluminum types that are installed by using O rings and seals and grease from a gun to tighten up the axle seal even better.
    They cost $19 to $25 dollars for a set of 2 ..
    This way NO dirt or water can get into your axle tubes . These will protect the whole axle shaft also..
    It's what jeep should have been doing from the start..

    HOLY SHIT! THANK YOU! I've been looking for that red vac line for (literally) years! When I got my Jeep it was just left open so I capped it off & nobody knew what I was talking about & I couldn't find it on any diagram. You da real MVP.
    Strange that my 4wd works with no supply right? I wonder if I have an upgraded that I don't know about? That would be a nice change of pace.

      Andy Roby Haha, No problem. The CAD system is a little confusing with all its vacuum lines and valves everywhere. Maybe your vacuum motor it just stuck in the engaged position. Nothing wrong with that.
      Here are the diagrams I used to figure out the system:

      NickInTimeFilms Thanks for the diagrams. I searched forever for those and couldn't find them. It helps if you know what things are called. I usually refer to everything as a "thingy" or "dudad" lol. Turns out though, my axle was replaced with one that doesn't have the vac disconnect on it. I'll run through the diagrams to make sure everything is capped off though. Thanks again!

    I had and xj with a 2 piece that I'm sure never engaged. And now I have and xj that had a np242 so it has a 1 piece at the front end. Is there more vibration with the 1 piece? Mine starts to make a humming noise going up to 25mph and up. I thought they were the tires but I changed those and it makes the same noise. And the front drive shaft is removed.

    i'm quite confused on what the actual purpose of that thing is--from what i know, with the motor engaged, it acts like a 1-piece axle. but when disengaged, the right front wheel is independent from everything else. but everything else is still being turned by the other front wheel, so what's the point?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was designed to put less stress on the front wheel drive portion of the 4x4 system when it was in 2wd. The thinking was that by disconnecting one of the drive wheels, the differential spider gears would start spinning instead of the whole carrier spinning which also causes the front drive shaft to spin. This would produce less drag on the system and may increase fuel efficiency slightly.
      The problem is that vacuum operation just isn't reliable enough for such an important component so they dumped it after a few years to save cost and simplify production. Jeep wasn't the only one to use a CAD system, some dodge rams also ran the system.
      For a serious offroader, this is a huge weak link because if one the line rots out or the motor stops working, you won't have 4WD. Thats even more important when you factor in that I installed Locking Differentials front and rear. The locker would be useless if the motor didn't engage so I dumped the whole system for 97+ axle shafts which are 1 piece and have larger U-joints for increased strength.

    So does that leave your truck in 4 wheel drive all the time when you swap to a 1 piece axle and eliminate the vacuum system?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, the transfer case is still what does the shifting, the 1 piece just makes sure you actually have 4wd when you do shift.

    • @sweetwaterLOGIC
      @sweetwaterLOGIC 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick response. I actually went an looked under my truck and it’s not the CAD version. I have a 90’ xj limited with np242. I realized I just have crappy linkages for the transfer case. I took someone else word that mine was a CAD version when I didn’t know any better.

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Renix years can be kind of weird so I don't blame them. The 242 is the reason yours doesn't have a cad axle. A 231 of that year usually would.

    Great video as usual. thanks so much... I am about to do this on my '89 Limited and have a few questions. My axle does not have a vacuum shift motor, does this mean I already have a 1 piece axle shaft? Or maybe the Limited is different? Do I need to install a new seal on the inner passenger side axle tube as well? thanks for your time.

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jean-Paul Guillemette If there is no casting on the passenger side, then you don't have a CAD system. You can still upgrade to 97+ Axle Shafts but you should have all the seals you need already. Curious, do you have a 242 Transfer Case which has Full 4Hi? I think only 232's came with CAD axles

    • @jeanpaulg9
      @jeanpaulg9 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    So if I did the cad delete to a solid 1 piece axle and capped vacuum lines my 4wd should only lock in when I put it in 4wd or with the 1 piece is in in 4wd all the time? More or less if I did that process would it go back into 2wd when I put it back in 2H or would it still be in 4wd no matter what?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is how the newer jeeps are setup. Your 2h and 4h still work exactly the same.
      The only thing this changes is that now the driveshaft will spin in 2hi where as with a proper working cad it will not spin in 2hi. It's sort of like how locking hubs work on older vehicles.

    • @jerrysprinkler9706
      @jerrysprinkler9706 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NickInTimeFilms so with that cad delete it’s technically in 4wd at all times and all you got is hi and low with no way of changing that besides factory setup or cable.

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not quite, your transfer case will still work exactly the same. You will still have 2wd in 2hi like normal.
      The CAD system is only a fuel economy thing that keep the front driveshaft from free spinning in 2wd.

    • @jerrysprinkler9706
      @jerrysprinkler9706 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NickInTimeFilms ok so if I had the collar slid over connecting both axles with the fork and a posi lock pin locking it In place I should be able to put it in 2wd and the front driveshaft shouldn’t spin unless I engaged the 4wd?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Right. Locking the collar won't send any power to the front driveshaft since only the transfer case can do that. But the front tires will be able to freespin the driveshaft in any position when the collar is locked.

    have you had any leaks out of that aftermarket 11800 seal ?

    • @NickInTimeFilms
      @NickInTimeFilms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure, I think it might have been good in the beginning but then started leaking very slowly, I notice a little bit of diff oil around the old vacuum housing bolts so i guess a little bit gets though. That could be that the seal wasn't straight of the shaft wasn't smooth. Regardless it's not enough to be an issue for me.

    • @NickInTimeFilms

      They are only to keep mud and dirt out of the axles tubes, they aren't really meant to seal against fluids since there isn't a machined sealing surface on the shafts there.
