  • How to know: What should I do with my life? In this video I discuss 7 ways to find your life purpose. The seven tips are as follows:
    1. Determine how hard you’re willing to work
    2. Make a list of your values.
    3. Think about your past - what went well and what didn't
    4. What are your current interests?
    5. What are your strengths?
    6. How can you best contribute to the world?
    7. What do you not like to do?

Step 1: Determine how hard you’re willing to work.
Step 2: Make a list of your values (primary values at the top).
Step 3: Think about your past (joy, excitement, fun, mistakes, unfavorable environments).
Step 4: What are your interests? (What would you do to keep yourself busy all day?)
Step 5: What are your strengths? (What things are you already good at?)
Step 6: How can you best contribute to the world?
Step 7: What do you not like to do? (What are your general dislikes?)
Write it down and get feedback!

I'll be sharing this fantastic video with my 26 year old son. He received his MSW a few years back and began working in his first official position about eight months ago. A large function of his work is as a case manager for families living in apartment buildings designated as shelters. Sadly, his mental illness disorders, including a diagnosis and medicinal treatment of unipolar depression, which may be bipolar (I was finally diagnosed BP II), have been increasing over the last three to five years. The stress of his work, and difficulties with organization and procrastination (ADD diagnosis as well), are now affecting his work performance. He's also been internalizing his clients' problems. My husband and I have been trying to help him understand that there are alternative careers at which he can use his innate and learned skills; that having a position with a job title sans MSW wouldn't be a sign of the failure he's convinced it would. Your video may help to advance our suggestion. Thank you, again. Sue K

    • @DrTraceyMarks
      @DrTraceyMarks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Gosh I hope it does help get a useful dialogue going. MSW work can be really draining for anyone much less someone who struggles with depression and can’t compartmentalize the work. It could totally be a fit issue for him. It would be great if he could use his MSW degree in a different way so that he has a better fit but does it feel like a failure because this other position didn’t work out well.

Thanks again for your video. You confirmed some things that crossed my mind which is greatly appreciated. You stated if you desire to make millions of dollars that you are going to have to put in a lot of hours. That is why I do not want to open my own business because of course if you want to produce excellent quality products and you are serious that takes time and I don't want to deal with the demands. You also said whatever you do you must enjoy which I can see the reason for that. I do know what I enjoy but like you said ponder the matter. I definitely want to continue to educate myself as far as mental illness before I go back to work because diagnoses change so you have to be vigilant. My diagnoses has changed three times so you are going to have to be aware of your symptoms and I personally think if at all possible view other symptoms in case you get a new one so you can seek help. Working has been a challenge for me so I am trying to educate myself as much as possible so I can live a healthy independant life. Thanks Dr. Marks you have given me some food for thought.

I'm going to guess that when you answer a question like that, you're really providing insight into the fact that you're depressed right?

I have found that doing what I am good at pays more than "what I really want to do." I wish I had been taught some of this about 30 years ago... My life has many pitfalls too,. Misspent youth that resulted in being locked up a couple times. PTSD, TBI...injuries from my Army time that I am still having surgeries to recover from. I like to think it's my mental state that says my life has been awesome. With all the pain and suffering, every day brings new experiences. I guess that was what I was going for. I don't bother dwelling on the bad things I can't change. Those things just are...they're there...life goes on. Live it, it's the only one we have.

I like this video as well as all the videos I saw on Dr. Marks Channel. But honestly what I expected in it was: how to recognize in your early age how your brain is wired? What type of occupation/profession will be the best match for your character, brain, personality and the future life? The occupation that will make you satisfied and happy and the people around you as well. How to make sure that your professional way in life is going to be your mission? But may be it's too much - it's like please draw me the story of my success that I will follow and will be happy. :) Thank you D-r Marks.

Dr. Marks - I had a question not related to this video but something that is bothering me. Quick data: 50 male, senior naval officer, Bipolar I, GAD, history of suicide attempts. I am having a bunch of side effects that have popped up after taking my current cocktail of medication (Li, latuda and a bunch of others). One is worrisome.. I am seeing things now. I see hallucinations about three times a day. No voices but one seem to want to talk. Do you know what might be causing this? Also, I am seeing weekly a psychiatrist and a therapist. I want to check with you in case this will result in an ambulance ride to the ER and the mental ward again
    Any help would be appreciated.

    • @DrTraceyMarks
      @DrTraceyMarks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hmmm....there may be some conflicts between the drugs in your cocktail, especially since you said you're on a "bunch" of others. Visual hallucinations can happen with bipolar d/o, but we tend to associate them more with a medical or physical cause like a medication/drug intoxication, seizure activity or some other illness with brain involvement. Another clue that makes me think along this line is the fact that they are a new finding while you are already on an antipsychotic drug. I don't want to alarm you - I would definitely report it to your psychiatrist so he/she can revaluate your meds and you may even need a medical workup. I'm interested to know how this turns out for you.

      1. Determine how hard you’re willing to work
      *really not much*
      2. Make a list of your values.
*being happy, not stressing too much, avoid trouble, freedom*
      3. Think about your past - what went well and what didn't
*Courier/assistant , not really nice, but not too shitty. would do it again, but I rather not have to*
      4. What are your current interests?
      *Don't know*
      5. What are your strengths?

Well at least you know where you stand. Now you have a place to start with developing some interests and figuring out what you can do. Then you can redo your list

My job will soon be eliminated as the result of a merger. Never liked the job much. Pretty much the only thing I've enjoyed outside the job has been acting in amateur theater. My efforts to get professional acting gigs for the last five years has been fruitless. I'm feeling pretty stuck.

I feel the same way. I started to get serious with acting in 2018, and have been going to school for it since. But it’s been very discouraging not being able to land jobs when it’s something I like doing so much. Most of the gigs I have gotten haven’t really helped to open any doors yet

That is a pretty pretentious film.
Life is not something you do things with, it's not a utilitarian achieving goals race.
Life is too dynamic and unpredictable, for most people. The conventual concepts of self fulfillment fails misrebly.
Career , goals, status, capital and even family are just concepts of faulty thinking/rigid outlook on life.
Take a step back, take a deep breath and take it slow and easy. It is Allright.
    Life cannot be wasted.
The drive for self fulfillment is often self sabotaging. You are not the center of your life, rather, the world around you and your engagement with it.
Life do not obey a planned course.
Your greatest assets are your knowledge, skills and personal abilities.
The best things in life, money just can't buy, rather are for free.

Work and talent has nothing to do with millions. You should be a millionaire to make millions or a rotten person...
