    as an autistic, (undiagnosed, but everyone tells, including therapists me I have it adhd), gay, trans girl, after taking a literal 5 day break from youtube especially, but also trying to avoid on demand entertainment in general, and I got happier. My attention span quadrupled. I stopped feeling lonely, I stopped feeling depressed. (I mean depressed the feeling, not depressed the mental condition) I didn't use the internet to communicate. I used it to watch stupid clip compilations and play video games. IDK about the actual Film Theory vid, I haven't watched it, but this video is wrong at least to me, which reminds me
    I'm just a dumbass autistic kid, this is NOT gonna be everyone's experience

    • @solarpellets
      @solarpellets  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think you misunderstood the video as a whole. I'm not saying having on demand entertainment is objectively good, though in most circumstances it is, I'm saying it's not causing people to *be* lonely. That was the entire basis of the film theory video, he said on demand entertainment was making people lonely. Not feel lonely, not decreasing attention spans, he was saying it was causing loneliness, which is objectively wrong.

      Literally not a single thing I said against the Film Theory video was an opinion. The statistics they share aren't backed up by any studies whatsoever, a lot of them are outright wrong, the reasons they cite for the specific problems they bring up are objectively wrong, nothing was an opinion.

      There's very much a difference between fact and opinion. When a channel touts what they say as facts, backed up by studies, causing certain undeniable effects, it's not an opinion. Every complaint I have with the video has nothing to do with opinion. It's not that they "feel like it makes more sense this way," it's that they say "the statistics say this and that means this," when their statistics are completely wrong, and their conclusion is wrong as a result. Even if it is an opinion, if you could somehow describe as that, it doesn't make it sacred and it still deserves the scrutiny. When someone's opinion is objectively harmful, it deserves to be scrutinized and criticized.

  • @Hatefulshadows

      I don't know if you watched the video, but I think you missed the point. The theorists are looked up to as a largely trustworthy source for a lot of science topics in general, and when they share incorrect and harmful information, it being "a theory" doesn't protect them. It's definitely not that I didn't "get" it, it's that they were objectively wrong.

    well made video but you are only saying opinions here too. The fact that people do become less lonely/anxious/depressed when taking breaks from the internet is literal proof that youtube can cause you to feel or be lonely. You might feel different about that, but there is science to back up that continued internet usage can cause you to be significantly less social and, in turn, lonely. (just search for it in the american medical association, or there are plenty of psych studies that i have had to do reports on that discuss this topic). yes you can find friends online but just because you might have a lot of luck with that, doesn't mean everyone will. the stuff at 8:00, there is nothing wrong with mats statement. Knowing stuff about niche topics can bring you closer to people and then on top of that you made it out to seem he was saying you can only be in one group, and unless i missed that when i watched the video, he didnt say that. What he was implying with the clip you played was that when you just know so much stuff it can make it harder to connect which sounds wrong. but think about it like this: i like anime, i can connect with people who like anime. but if i narrow that down to I love this anime and hate another anime, all of a sudden it is harder to connect to the group of "i love anime" because the group that loves the anime i hate, will not want to talk to me, thats just how i see it and we can agree to disagree! i can see how you could disagree with mats video, but to clickbait it with "disgustingly wrong" is... disgustingly wrong. good points all around, as an autistic adhd mentally ill disabled trans guy there are so many sources to my historical loneliness and the rest of everything I struggle with, and my ability to find potential friends within niche communities is honestly better than it ever has been
    the thing about the film theory video too is like - you CAN make a video about the ways in which the modern internet has new capacities to hurt or otherwise screw with people. you can talk about how algorithms inadvertently adopt human biases, how different cultures like diet culture being easily accessible or the overconsumption of make up being further normalized have effects on younger people than ever, you can talk about how apps like tiktok work to rage bait people into engagement because that's easier to do than to support genuinely good content
    there is SO MUCH you could critique about the modern internet, I don't see why "a more complex and diverse pool of cultures to engage with" was something they decided to tackle

    youtube isn't the reason i'm lonely and depressed. it's because my christian parents didn't want me hanging around people they didn't like and they were overall abusive as well. as such, now living on my own, i'm introverted probably more than i would be otherwise because i have so little knowledge of social cues as well as how the world around me works. which to that point, i was put through christian home schooling, which only made all of that worse. being trans and not straight, i also put up with MORE shit from my family as well, and i'm even scared to be myself in public. but yeah matpat, let's just blame youtube. though to be fair, youtube's algorithm DOES tend to push right wing stuff for whatever reason, so while it may not be the root cause, it's certainly doing some harm in that regard.
