- W7O/NE-212 is a peak located in the mountains of Eastern Oregon between Ontario and Baker City. It has line of sight to the Boise, Idaho metro area and that means it can be activated on 2 meters! It's rarely activated because of its remoteness, but other than that, there's no reason not to come up here and give this one some love.
If you really ask QSO (not QSL) then it means - can you communicate with _____ directly or through repeater? This is first time I hear this Q-uestion. Amateurs usually are interested if other operator copied transmission successfully and ask QSL? (can you acknowledge receipt of transmission?) and in an answer get QSL (I acknowledge the receipt!) or sometimes Roger! 😊 Nice video, cheers from Latvia! 73!
Roger
I think he is saying QSO by mistake. It should be the standard QSL? Where the question is “do you acknowledge receipt of my transmission or my call”. Everyone answering him is using QSL. I have never heard QSO used in that context.
Automated captions just hear him wrong.
@@Superacercnot automated captions, those are added by the user. He is definitely saying QSO.
Fantastic, love the activation. Good job. Love it that you were able to get France. Thank you for sharing. 73 KO4UWU
Awesome. A little bush wacking never hurt nobody!!!
Gotta be willing to work for glory!
Such a nice feeling when from
CA you jump to France 🇫🇷 🎉🥳. Great spot and activation !
That was a very nice activation with the 891. You don’t see many of those radios on Summits.
Thanks! I think more folks should consider it for SOTA. It’s not really that much heavier than an IC-705.
It's not on the summit page I don't think but it's on POTA as Payette National Forest. 7800 ft and drop dead wonderful view from up there
This was a fun video to watch! Makes me want to run out and buy a 891 and start POTA and SOTA. Thanks for taking us with you! 73 de N5BLU in WWA
Thank You! And by all means, run out and get that 891! I absolutely love that radio!
891 is awesome. It does draw a lot of power compared to radios of its size so be advised. But it’s got a great combination of features and is a small package for what it has which is 100w barefoot.
@@point177… I guess if it draws a lot of power.. bring two batteries!! 😂😂
Great job fantastic views congratulations 73 from kb2uew
Thank You!
Awesome!!! I need to get out and try this!
Do it! A lot of people own this radio and might discover they don’t need to buy an expensive QRP radio just to do SOTA. BTW, I can get a full 100 watts ssb with a 6ah battery and that cuts my weight significantly.
Kudos for lugging all that QRO gear up the trail.
Thanks! This one was a relatively short hike so it wasn’t too bad.
Great video. Have a 891 too, such a great rig for portable operations. Btw, what camera used for filming?
Thanks! My camera was a GoPro Hero 11. The lapel mic I was using was a Tascam DR-10.
That's great....fun, fun.....😁😁😁
Very nice!! But are you not afraid of bears? Best 73
Thanks! I'm not afraid of bears. Bears are afraid of me!
It's so beautiful there that you don't even have to take a radio with you) Is it forbidden to use trees to raise antennas there?
I'm lucky to live around here. This is US Forest Service land and we are allowed to hang antennas from trees here. I don't like to use trees, though because there aren't always trees where I need them and I don't want to lose my throw line in the higher branches.
Is that your first with Christian F4WBN? Always good fun!
I got him at Bald Peak earlier this year, also when I was using the FT-891. He’s a really skilled operator!
Should use QSL not QSO!
Nice location!
😂 Yeah, I’ve since figured that out.
nice activation.
Can I ask what mobile app you use for logging
Thank and stay safe!

Thanks for antenna setup description at end. Just got an EFHW wire antenna. The gentleman who built it recommends a 33' Spider beam fiberglass pole. Too heavy/big for packing in; do you think a 23' pole with yield acceptable results?
I get acceptable results with the apex 16 ft off the ground using the Carbon 6 mast with the antenna on the bottom of the third section. The best strategy is just to get some wire in the air and try it. My experience has been that 1/2 wave antennas work better than shortened antennas regardless of height.
So, to answer your question, 23’ is fine. And I agree, a 33 foot mast is too much to carry.
That was a great video! Thanks for posting..
And that was amazing getting into FRANCE from right there in Oregon!!!
I’m in the Boise region and have been considering SOTA!!!
Did you use a Tuner? Or was the antenna resonant enough for 20m and 40m???
Many Blessings,
Mike

You've got some great summits nearby for SOTA! I lived in Ontario for a year so I'm sort of familiar with the region. Anyhow, I was not using a tuner on this activation. I have a linked end fed half wave with a link for each band between 40 and 10 meters. It will tune up harmonically on 20 if I'm too lazy to remove the center link. Sometimes I run it with a tuner if I know it's going to be a brushy summit or I'm too lazy to get up and down to change the links. When I do carry a tuner, I use the LDG Z-100 plus.
I have worked F4WBN many times on SOTA actually. He seems to be a big chaser considering I have worked him on practically all of the dozen or so SOTA activations. Whatever setup he uses really gets him into the USA with about a 559 (at least on CW, never worked him SSB)
@@JonathanKayne If you haven’t worked F4WBN, you haven’t really done SOTA! 😂
Cool find. What fiberglass mast are you using?
I’m using the Sotabeams Tactical Mini. It’s beefy and pretty impressive!
Whats your preferred method of securing the mast and do you use counterpoise on your EFHW?
I use a counterpoise.
I secure the mast using the antenna wires as two guy lines and then the yellow rope as a third guy line. The antenna wires don’t need to be in a perfect line, so I pull them both away from the third line. The mast stays up in some pretty strong winds using this approach.
What EFHW are you using?
I built it. It’s trimmed for 40 meters and then I have links for all the other bands. The 49:1 transformer is wound with 16 gauge wire on an FT 140-43.
How do you protect your radio against rain?
I don’t. I put it away when it starts raining.
@@KD7QOW-np9gd ok, I hoped you had some kind of box
@@kasperks that would be cool!
How long can you run off that battery?
I've never run it down. I always get bored before it runs out. The longest I've gone I think is 2.5 hours SSB. I also have a 6 AH battery I use for longer approaches, and I've never run that one out either.
@@KD7QOW-np9gdGood to hear! Do you need to run an external tuner with that 891?
@@FreedomFest Not necessarily, but I've started carrying one to most activations just because I've gotten skunked by environmental conditions affecting my antenna tuning a couple of times. A tuner can be a nice little problem solver when you need it!
What kind of battery?
LFP. This one is made by a company called LiTime. It’s been flawless for the last six months.
@@KD7QOW-np9gd Amp hours? Weight?
@@dandypoint 6ah, 849 grams.
Slow down. No need to talk so fast. Its not a race
WF4BN is the Prepper on Utube.
