I just finished organizing my creative space including all my collage papers, I used clear acrylic serving trays…. I used several 11x14 and one 14x20. They stacked nicely on my shelf. For the cut papers I used clear pocket envelopes and categorized them, people, animals, jewelry and watches, etc. it was an overwhelming project that took 2 weeks but it was so worth it!
Congratulations on that huge mission! I'm impressed it only took 2 weeks! These sound like great sorting methods, thanks for sharing!

I just came across your video yesterday & have SLOWLY watched it to glean ideas! You present in such a fresh way! I have recently been diagnosed with ADHD & do more "organizing" than creating. You prospective on "chaos" and allowing it sometimes, really helps! I feel I always have chaos, but if I don't micro manage ALL of my paper, I think it will be good & help me find a way to "flow"! Also, when you talked about your "Alex" I had an immediate vision of mine plus 2 others of a different brand. Vision said, "You're wasting so much of our functional space!" Thank you again for a great video!!
The best organizing tip would be: leave everything in the magazines!
I dont do it, because sometimes I am in the mood to cut out a lot .
I was lucky to find two big vintage cabins with open drawers that are closed in the back and I can take out very easy.
That gives me 80 drawers all together.
I store my artjournal supplies in them.
But in the near future it will be all collage paper.
Very true 🤣 but if I see something that inspires me, I simply cannot leave it behind in fear of it getting lost in all my shelves of magazines and piles of paper!

I have acid-free cardboard drawers that are labled by subject. But, the most fun is to go through the unsorted piles and get jolts of inspiration.

I (sort of) organized my stash with several categories such as 'people', 'text', 'sheet music' etc. and clipped each section with those large binder clips (copper colored because they're pretty 😄). These are stored in a rectangular plastic bin. It's not perfect but better than the chaos they were in!

What a great video - thank you! I’m always interested in seeing how other collage artists organize their papers and supplies. I’m always “in process” with my organizing of papers and images, and strangely, I find that both challenging and enjoyable! I love “sorting” to a certain degree because I find images I’ve not see recently, etc. It re-inspires me!
I really love the puzzle organizer idea. I might look into that! I use a variety of organizing “tools” - the 12x12 clear scrapbook paper flat containers for my scenery/background papers. I have some specific frequently used categories I put in these containers - people, flowers, foods - as examples.
Then, for other “categories” I use but not as regularly, I use a filing cabinet and file things alphabetically by category - examples: transportation, trees, clothing, etc. Some categories are so big that I do break them into their own smaller categories. So, instead of “animals” as a file holding all kinds of animals, I have individual files for mammals, birds, and insects. Then, all other animals (fish, reptiles, etc) go into the general “animal” file. If I see I have too many “reptiles” in my general animal folder, I make “reptiles” it’s own file. Hope that makes sense! I find it works well for me (so far! 🤞🏼).
I finally made the decision to accept that organizing my papers is indeed a process, instead of me trying to find the one best way. It’s freed me up, so I am actually collaging rather than spending too much time just organizing! Thanks again - great video! Kathleen
I definitely agree with feeling like I am always in progress. But I think that is PART of the process, each project needs a different strategy of completing.
I am jealous you have a file cabinet going! It's something I hope to do at some point! I fear I'd not label categories well but I want to give it a try! I love the idea of breaking out categories as you get more and more. I could see having 5 main categories and then having smaller ones within them.

I think when it comes to collage, organizing is equal to agonizing! I've attempted and abandoned many, many ways to organize clippings from zines, there is just no easy way. Settled for five ring binders with page protectors and three small photo albums for smalls. Most of it is just by dominant color now, color seems to drive my decisions more than anything else, so I sorta gave up on the rest. Interestingly, I don't have a puzzle organizer, but I do have four old square puzzle boxes that I can shuffle papers around in comfortably. Stored the actual puzzle pieces in ziplocks with labels. Works as well as anything I've seen so far.
I'm glad you've found a method that works well for you. Color does seem to be most popular. Puzzle boxes would be a great solution! They're thin enough to have lots and can store lots 😁
@@flanzella yes, it's kind of a bonus to have the lid as well, to keep the ones you've already looked thru, and they nest easily :)
It's always inspiring to me to see other artist's creative spaces. I also use puzzle sorters. They are a different kind, but are stackable to maximize space. I am lucky enough to have a large table and can unstack the trays and surround myself with them. That is, when my table isn't already covered in a bunch of loose paper!

Great topic! I find that the vast selection of storage options I’ve seen, tried, and currently use (‘tho not with rigid discipline) to ALL be useful. Projects change. Our favorite piles to dig through change, whether we sort by subject matter, color, or style. Fortunately, there are plenty of times that I look for ideas inspired by cut-outs, and rummaging around for that perfectly poised hand usually feels like a treasure hunt. There are times, however, when I don’t have hours at my disposal to work and prefer to keep a separate stash just for those quicker/smaller projects.
Like all art, collage and it’s practice are highly subjective. Thank you for sharing ideas I’ve never considered! You’ve got me scouring Amazon and planning a jaunt over to Goodwill to see what I can rustle up!

So true about being too organized. Your ideas are very much similar to what I do today. It’s making time to pull out what I know I will not use. Yes space is a challenge. Not much at all. I like using file folders for all kinds of categories. I bought a horizontal file cabinet on wheels so i don't have to keep getting up. Also, I keep one folder called "working projects". Small objects are in a smaller box using the same filing system. Then I have a flat cigar box for tiny objects. But I don't have a system to get rid of older harvested magazines.

Great video! I organise in a very similar way, I have two binders of plastic sleeves; one binder for backgrounds/patterns/those bottom layer things; and one binder for detailed, top-layer, fussy cut things which also includes words/phrases. Within each binder I organise roughly by colour and theme, i.e. all the space backgrounds together, all my cut out butterflies together. Etc!
I love the idea of the puzzle sorter though, I have some loose papers like from wrapping paper.

Really great to see another glimpse behind the scenes so to speak,My studio space like yours is very limited,so always trying to find great storgae solutions. But I also orgamise my endless digital files. of people, objects etc. It;s important to have to hand what you use the most and then work from there. I can relate to you saying you see things in layers (like photoshop) and I see things this way too. Labelling is a big thing for me in storage so I don't forget what I have and then never use. (matt)P.s am really starting to find a pace with the September prompts,and try and to post on my Pintrest page and the board I create for each prompt list every day if I can.
It's definitely tricky, when it comes to digital storage I have always been so bad at labeling correctly. Hoping to get better at that.

All my collage images are in a set of 8 drawers that are not very deep apart from 2. Large enough for A4 size papers. I have one drawer full of people images. These are all separated into catagories using single plastic folders.
For example...large people,small people,faces,hands,legs etc
I also have trees,flowers,animals,birds,buildings,transport,house interiors,furniture,household items,doors,staircases,planets,clouds,mountains,sea,fish,coral,
Clothing,shoes,cosmetics,jewelery,clocks,watches,food,glasses,bottles,
Figurines and pottery,vintage childrens book images,black and white images.
I have cut everything out so its ready to go!

Hi Leah,mines just a hobby so this suits me fine. But as you're an artist selling your work,you probably need a cabinet for all the images you're bound to amass over the years!
Handy Binder tip: Put fairly thick sheets of paper in the plastic sleeves...then when you want to access images...just pull sheet out with all the images on top(especially useful if images are cut out and flimsy as they can be tricky to remove) I do this with my sleeves and it works a treat. I guess you could use these sleeves in your filing cabinet too ?!

i did use plastic file folders to organize all of my papers since i could label each section, but they started to get really heavy after awhile lol (easy to bin it all tho when i cleaned up one day, 10 years of cut up papers/magazines for collage down to the skip, but it was prob starting to be a fire hazard lol and i really havent done a lot of collaging since college)
Wow, 10 years of paper cutting must have been so much collected! As I said I only started hanging on to my papers when I switched to vintage magazines (as I found they had more value). Hopefully you've found the medium that speaks to you 💖

Hi! I'm glad you appreciate the process! I'm definitely hoping to do a video on this. I like to spray my papers with a work fixative as it has UV protection when framing on paper! On wood I like to resin the artwork.

Just half way through the video and wondered, could you glue a document wallet on the inside of the folder so you can insert the loose paper in there?

I’m a beginner with collating, but the thing I really need help with are the word clippings! I went through a large stack of old magazines when I was stuck on the couch with a bad bout of bronchitis a couple years ago, and I still haven’t solved the problem! Can any of you veterans please help me?

Yes, sorting them into some sort of categories, dang spell corrector! I saw someone had used the old “magnetic” albums to hold phrases/sentences, but I haven’t been able to find any in my thrift store. I guess I could use repositionable glue dots or tape for those. I have lots of words as well, so I thought maybe those could be sorted by verbs/nouns/adjectives,etc. Trying to only do phrases now that I really like, but it’s addictive ! LOL
