I always like to watch a good welder ! I am a welder for fifty plus years , still love to weld. I really enjoy your videos. The people that watch your channel are learning the correct way to do things right. Keep up the good work.
I’ve lived by this as a apprentice all the way to journeyman ! - 5 mins of prep saves you 5hours of f---ing around! , I burn that now into my apprentice’s head. Very nice video 😎
Fr I'm always getting yelled at by other guys cus I'm " not doing shit " but I can shave off 2 days of work by laying out and shaking out stuff for 1 day. It really seems like taking a step back and thinking for 5 mins makes stuff go so much easier.
Killer tips an very knowledgeable an it's nice you take the time to explain things. Have you ever thought about linking up with Rodger Wakefield, he's in plumbing but does mechanical stuff too. You and him stick out to me, you both are bringing attention to the trades. An I thought it would be cool if you guys did a vid or 2 together. Might bring more attention y'all's channels an attention to the trades. Great vid as always.
After this video I am going to log on to your website and give you my email. Thanks for putting a course together!! It’s going to help me a great deal!!!!
Good job Austin, really enjoyed the tips I picked up today. I'm getting brave enough now to go get some pipe and see what I can come up with on a couple projects I need to do. Thanks for the great info you always show us. Fred.
You can also get good saddles by making two cuts with a chop saw. For example, for a saddle on 2-3/8 onto 2-7/8 use 20 degrees. This creates a clean consistent saddle that is easier to weld and requires almost no grinding.
Good video for starting basics. Some tips from someone that's done it for a while. Make your saddle jig fit what you commonly use, saves time back and forth. Mark your center line of your jig to save eyeballing were your throats line up. Unless your cutting angle is perfectly flat in the throats and angled in slightly on the ears every time. Your wall thickness will effect your measurements, so subtract a 1/8" to 1/4" remember that if you set posts level and have to beat in a horizontal, your posts will move out of level (or plumb) and if you do that on one it will effect your others. Dewalt 600lb clamps from home depot help alot for all kinds of things. I keep 12 to 5ft ones on the truck always. Cheap clamps that are strong and have a ton of uses
Do it the easy way as we just did, 11-2023. You don't need the fancy, template to draw around which only fits one size pipe and you don't need torches. We just welded 2 1/4" drill pipe to form corners in muck next to the county ditch here in Michigan. We had never done this before and it worked perfectly. We cut 33' well pipe in half and drove pipe 12' in ground leaving 4' 6" above. All you need is a gen to run cut-off saw set at 32-33 degrees for all horizontal pipe cuts. Measure the distance inside both vertical post. That is the distance to bottom of the saddle ( throat ). Simply make the 2 angled cuts at each end of pipe which forms the saddle that perfectly fits the post. After switching ends you place the (ears ) verticle the best you can and it will be fine. 32-33 degrees is for same dia. pipes and you adjust to different angle to fit different dia. And of course you need a remote welder. There is Y.T. videos showing how to make the cuts as I described.
I believe you can make a template using paper. Mark 1/2 the circumference of the larger pipe, then cut straight back from center so you have a piece that looks like a rectangle with a dome on one side. Make 2 of them. Wrap both around the smaller pipe splitting the difference between both of them. Tape the ends together, and you've got a template. Just my opinion.😉
Hey Austin, I'm doing a bunch of handrail for a car plant but I can't seem to find a 1 1/2" sch 40 marking guide. Would it be the 1 7/8" guide because of the OD? Thanks from an ironworker in Detroit.
Mr. Ross , at the end of your video you mentioned the clips. Where do you purchase them or can a guy just make them? Could you please make a video of repairing rusted out bottom rails of gates and panels. Have a great day.
I get them from my local welding supply. But I reckon a guy could make his own if he only needed a few. If not you should be able to find them online somewhere.
Your surely passionate about your work. I have saddled a lot of pipe but I still struggle with hand rails going up ramps or going up steps (not the top rails). What is your advise for me to make myself more efficient?
Couple things that'll help: - experience (mistakes are the best teachers) - pipe fitters blue book - get comfortable with geometry or get a good calculator.
At 01:15 of the vidya, you say your assuming we watch because we're DIY's, etc..... Yes, but I look forward to Friday's and getting to see your new videos. I've been watching you since you was still working on the line. Really enjoy your vidyas. And if you decided to throw a curve ball occasionally and post 2 vidyas a week, I'm sure you wouldn't get any complaints.
What is the best way to weld for farms like how do i ask them because where im at its all factorys and i like farms and wanna weld on them but nobody around where i live all farms weld for themselves or have family do it
Thanx for the video. Great "field tips" from a tradesman. I have just done two videos on my channel on how the development of a 90 degree branch works in theory, and how the theory meets up with the in field practice and the blue book as well as the "discrepancies". Thanx again for great videos. I really enjoy your channel.
I like to make templates from old wrap arounds or gasket material. Works good for angled branches you use often like 45s. A formula I find works well on right angle miters is to make the "ears" 1/3 the diameter of the pipe OD LESS the wall thickness. Then mark the Quarters on the template so it's easy to align the miters to 90 degree increments. The templates next together when rolled up. I stick them in an old rod box to keep them from being crushed flat.
Don't be ashamed to make your own template from good gasket material. Especially if you are working long angles on different size pipes. Whittle one to fit, make a template for the rest. (Pipe derricks, etc)
What a likeable dude, we should all wish we were as likeable as this dude

All ways sometimes new to learn keep up the good work
I freaking love your channel! I build sawmill equipment for a living and love learning new stuff and your torch cutting skills! :)
I ask this question last week and now he made a video for it. I will keep the ideas coming haha. Great video
I watch because I like to learn something new everyday!!

Never built a fence but I really enjoy your videos. I have found not much fence building repairing pontoon boats! 😅

Great work I think I'd just cut a hole in the larger pipe myself, saves alot of time
Wish u was closer to tulsa. I need some of your professional welding done on my dirt track car
Good job Austin, really enjoyed the tips I picked up today. I'm getting brave enough now to go get some pipe and see what I can come up with on a couple projects I need to do. Thanks for the great info you always show us. Fred.
You bet. It’s my pleasure. Thank you for showing up every week and supporting what we do around here.

I’m on a farm in Australia keen to learn mate
Austin sometimes we are able to use a 5/8’s nut to trace the saddle cut for the pipe that is to be saddle on.
How do you use a nut ?
From Venezuela. Brothers
Now do a video showing how to saddle on a 45° with different sized pipe. Same principle but slightly more difficult to pull off.

Should’ve been 19 5/8 lol. Excellent Content bud.
Here’s one for ya Austin : how to measure and cut for a pipe that is slanted as opposed to level ?
Your surely passionate about your work. I have saddled a lot of pipe but I still struggle with hand rails going up ramps or going up steps (not the top rails). What is your advise for me to make myself more efficient?
Couple things that'll help:
- experience (mistakes are the best teachers)
- pipe fitters blue book
- get comfortable with geometry or get a good calculator.
One other thing, get a magnetic digital angle finder.
Thank you for ur help!

Right on
where can i get that template?
Do u ever cut with propane and oxy
I need that pipe saddle tool
Why do you use 5/32 instead of 1/8?
Where were you 15 years ago when I was asking this question? I went to everyone I know including my college instructors.
I was building fence for a guy in high school askin him questions and learnin from him lol
Trying to send email. Keeps saying invalid email address??
What is your email address?
By any chance do you need a helper? :)
He kinda looks like Benny Hill
