  • Sharing how I cut, fit (saddle) a dead man brace for pipe fence. Many people like to use this type of brace on hilly terrain but it’s useful in other applications as well. You can use this same method for any custom angles you want to use with bracing pipe fence.

That’s great advice, I was taught to leave it a little longer because it’s easier to to trim it than to throw it out. Always make the next one better than the last one, if you don’t learn something as you go along, you’re not paying attention.

Appreciate you taking the time to make these videos. I’m a self employed Master Plumber by trade and rarely need welding in my daily job but enjoy welding and light fabrication on weekends. Picked up some 8010 after watching your videos and have been practicing my downhill welds. Your videos are very helpful.

I tried making some of those dead man braces , they look ... okay; i found using a tube notch template helped a lot for coping the pipe . i will say i need to do more of these to make them all look the same . if anyone is curious i set the middle brace at 42" , am using 48" cattle wire fence , my angles where 64degrees with diagonal of 106" with a stubby 3' concrete in the ground . i set it at 42 because of deflection and that is a good height to help mitigate the deflection in the pipe. all i have left is just weld the 2-7/8 to 4.5" piece still . going to try my luck with 7018 up hill :X . Thanks for making this video it gave me the confidence enough to give it a go :D might have to pick up some 7010 or 8010 and see how down hill goes :3

Hey “A” man, as always good stuff. I also do a lot of coped cuts, I actually made up a jig and I use a hole saw. No bigger than 2” copes, anything bigger than that gets a little hinky. Hood down lights on.

    As always an awsome video.
Something to try is what is called a "Rance brace" it is a design from New Zealand that alot of professional fence builders across the country are going to. Because it is less materials, safer for livestock, and stronger/longer lasting then other styles of braces.
Your "dead man" brace is pretty close. Exept you only use one diaginal at a 19 to 16° angle to a queen post that is driven subsurface or left slightly above the ground.
Also there are a couple other ways to measure for your diaginal.
First is have 2 clamps lay your pipe ontop of them or clamp them to the post where you want it to land and mark your top and bottom. The other is. Mark were you want the top of the pipe and measure to the top on the other post, then move your tap measure on one side to where the bottom of the pipe would be and subtract that measurement to get the other side of your cope.

Good to have a curv-o-mark pipe marker once you mark quarters, transfer the angle from the angle finder to the curv o mark. It will mark the long and short points more accurately than an eyeball. Can use the pipe marker on the string line to get the angle.
Steep angles can create some funky saddles.

Just how I figured on doing this! Have you done any sloped cattle guard fenders? That'd be a good one.
I like using sucker rod for the deadman's (I call em transverse's) when in the tensioned position. Much easier. Two to three passes. Thanks Austin.

Austin, Thanks for all the helpful content - you are my inspiration for building my own pipe fence entrance to my property. I know you have to use a gas axe because you have a portable setup, but I can cut my pipe in my shop. Is there any reason to use my torch over my plasma cutter?

ARoss,I think experience is something to pass on,I could explain in person in a few minutes, draw vertical lines for post, maybe six, ground line, now with no toprail, how would you put in an angle brace? Corner post down to first post, but only 60% up the corner post, toprail or not.

Good demo on how to build a brace. The different pipe sizes really make for a pain in the *ss. Wouldn't hurt to use the string all the time...makes for more accurate bevel cuts.
BTW, the side pipes are "vertical" or "plumb", not "level". Level implies horizontal...
