He's just like "Yay, another adventure!" completely unaware of what Anakin just did or why they are there. Then his confusion after Anakin tells him to stay behind, and he's illuminated in the red glow of the lava with ash in the air, symbolic of the dark galaxy he and everyone else are about to live in. Brilliant scene.
What’s even more upsetting is that’s the last time R2 sees Anakin. Someone pointed this out also: when Luke goes to Dagobah, R2 is extremely insistent on going with him cause he doesn’t want to lose someone else.
