I recently bought one off Amazon, I made sure it was made in the USA, had a manufacture date on it and a metal windlass, NO plastic for me.
Hey man, I was recently corrected on placement of the tourniquet while teaching classes to civilians in a country in E. Europe recently. I have always been taught 3 inches above the wound. Our Doctor that does the real medical work on our team, corrected us on it and explained why. She said to run the tourniquet as far up as possible. You run the risk of clamping off blood flow too low. You can't see what damage was caused, or where the bullet, bullet fragments, or object traveled upon impact. Running it as high as possible helps mitigate the unforseen. I'm set in my ways at 3 inches lol, however I know medical standards are dynamic and we learn from years of mistakes.
Definitely not correcting you, you're a professional in your field and I'm just a volunteer with a few certifications. I'd like your opinion on that and if you see the TCCC standards moving towards this.

My buddies that are nurses also recommend going as high up the limb as you can. I assume the main reason would be because you can't identify where the hole(s) are but didn't think about blood flow being cut off better higher up.
I think they say you can never go too high and makes for a good rule of thumb in a stressful situation. But 3 inches might be good but might be better to play it safe.
Arteries can also retract if severed.
TCCC teaches high and tight, like a good military haircut. I went to a stop the bleed course less than a month ago taught by an ER nurse who also said high and tight. I asked why. He said it's better for the ER doc.

Recon medical were some I bought and found pretty good. Used on for "training and education". Seem good but have them as a back up/better than improvised or nothing at all.
I purchase some recon medical tourniquets for training purposes. I’ve applied them literally hundreds and hundreds of times and they’ve worked every time, no signs of damage or failure.
I have Recon Medical, CAT Gen 6 and Gen 7, SWAT-T, SOF-T Brand New Model. The Recon Medical seems good just no reports on usage popping up. I have read reports of Both Recon Medical and CAT Gen 6 and earlier breaking both seem to be from UV damage from extended carry in harsh conditions Combined with not getting them tight before using the windlass. The TCCC committee says it should take no more than 3 half turns to occlude blood flow if properly applied. The More turns the higher the risk of Friction snapping the compression band. I Feel get the best and if you need more for mass causality situations buy SWAT-T and Recon for backups. The SWAT-T is good for Canines, Kids and for building a pressure bandage with bulk gauze and the SWAT-T. The Recon ones with padding can be used to secure limbs for safe transport a pair if one is not long enough. I also stock Bulk packs of roll gauze and Triangular bandages. Israeli pressure bandages in 4, 6 and 8 widths plus chest seals and Splint kits of various types. I also recommend being prepared for extraction from rubble and vehicles if the SHTF. Fire Engineering videos on TH-cam to get some ideas.
@@wacojones8062 definitely I went pretty beefy with my first aid so much gauze and emergency bandages those not stocked on my shelf filled a large tote. Made sure to cover bleeding, air way, wound closure I could cover pretty much any medical emergency pre hospital but hope we never have too. Skinny medic and prep medic have given us so much information. Don't forget books too Where there is no doctor and Where there is no dentist are some great ones to start.
@@brandonparrett4975 I was trained as a Combat lifesaver in the Army reserves back in the Mid 90's. I retired from the Army 2, Dec 1998 with 27 Years of service 2 active the rest in the reserves as an Instructor. I got one medal for Life saving heat casualty and I built kits out of my own pocket to improve our level of care well before that. I had several EMT/Paramedics in the unit they had skill I had the will to take care of stuff before we had a bleeder. I was at one base when they used most of one large kit on a stupid cook on drugs who shoved his fist through a window and then rotated it massive bleeding. The base hospital needed our sutures to stitch him up as the Cuban boat lift criminals were at the Base and the entire summer supply issued to the hospital had been used up. I help deal with a suicide attempt on a public highway gunshot upper left chest EMT on scene no gear as he was off duty. Then another Possible suicide attempt who rammed a barricade 3 doctors half a dozen nurses showed up again no gear it took almost an hour before the regular ambulance showed up. All we could do is one head bandage to keep blood from dripping into his eyes kicking him into deeper shock as he was pinned between the crushed seat and steering wheel. Just the prep work kept our unit far safer we did not have major traumas like many other reserve units we trained with.
The Recon Tactical TQs are well made too. I have both and trust my life to both.
I*n fact Ive found the beefed up windlass of the gen 7 NAR CAT to be bulky and burdensome to work with compared to the aluminum Recon Medical tq.
As of now, I think the only reason Recon's are not TCCC approved is because they aren't made in the US (Berry Amendment)i have heard nothing but good stuff about them and they seem pretty good to me.
Even if they weren't as good, no one bleeding is going to say "TCCC approved tourniquets only! I'll wait for someone to pull a TCCC approved one!"😂

My Chinese knock off tourniquet worked just fine. Pinching doesn't matter either. Patient bleeding out, a pinch is the least of their problems.
I have a few knockoffs myself. My $$$ is short and I have to work with what I got. I put together my own ifak

The North American Rescue is nice but I really like the Recon medical because of the metal windlass. Would love to see a torture test between the two.

Went thru a mass casualty training class recently, and have come to respect the quality of the NAR CATs. Several here have remarked on the cost. If you keep an eye on NAR, they have sales which can get you a really good price on some of their kits. Tourniquets are good for limbs, but you also may have open chest wounds, and joint wounds. Best to have chest seals and packing gauze for when a tourniquet will not work. Getting the tourniquet in a kit with the other items at a reduced overall price covers a lot more scenarios and may be the way to go for you. Yes, CPR training will probably save most lives. But, if its a main arterial bleed, the clock is ticking fast and CPR isn't going to save them. I have a kit in both mine and my wife's vehicles, as well as one on my range bad, and hope I never have to use them. But, if I do, I won't regret the cost.

I am sorry if you covered this in one of your other videos, but how about a presentation about what to do after a TQ application in an austere/grid/down/SHTF scenario where no advanced definitive care is available and/or it is not feasible to transport the patient to such a care facility.

Seems like the Chinese are learning. I'm comparing some old USGI issue tourniquets I brought back from some newer ones I ordered for 1.79 on Ali. Seems they beefed up their injection moulding. All the problems addressed in the video seem to have been fixed.
I checked the windlass (slightly bendiness, but still sturdy), the windlass fabric (much shorter than the one in the video for the knockoff), and checked for pinching: all good.
When I apply the tq, I can't even get a full turn out of it (like the OEM) and it is already super tight. I bought these to train on, but if money is tight, I'd recommend them for general use

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but is there any truth to the idea that if you leave a TQ on too long, it could kill the limb? The trauma class I took, I was told that that's mostly a myth, and it isn't really an immediate deal anyway, vs bleeding out.

Hey Skinny, you should throw your weight around a bit and suggest/pressure NAR to include a small grease pencil and holding loop with their next version of their TQs. The application time is critical, yet there's no included writing implement. I have to buy mini sharpies and rubber band them to all my TQs so that I always have a way to write that time. A stubby grease pencil will be water proof, cheap, and effective. All you have to be able to do with it is write 4 numbers. That's it. 🤷🏻♂️ Nothing fancy, just am on-board writing device that's water (blood) proof.
Amazon has knockoffs. I only get my cats from medical gear outfitters.

Hell I was using belts that come shorts from the store in my ifak lmao so the Chinese tourniquet is an upgrade for me, IDC about all the other crap if it works (and it does as he said) I'm using it in my kits

Is NAR tq better? Without a doubt! But if you can't afford it (outside USA it costs around 40$) is made in China better then nothing?

Would you be able to place each TQ in a freezer? I've always wondered how the plastic windlass tourniquets, even the genuine variety would handle extreme cold environments (-40 Celsius for example). I figure that being stored in an internal coat pocket would keep the TQ from getting too brittle, but for a worst case scenario I've wondered about TQ applications in extreme cold, and wondered if the SOF-T with it's aluminum windlass would be a better purchase for people who live or work in the more northern parts of the Americas, or even the arctic regions. I don't live terribly far north, but winter days in the -40s are not unheard of in my province.
Considering trained people are less than half as effective with the sof-t, I'd take my chances with plastic.
Funny how when i was doing training in the 80,s we would go over tourniquets but only for an extreme last resort use.
Late 50's early 60's boy scout first aid training taught using a scout neckerchief for a tournicate, but "only when there was danger of losing a life or a limb" .
I like CAT tourniquet, but also use the SICH tourniquet!
If only the NAR TQ wasn't so expensive. I don't mind paying a little more for a better product but it's at least twice the money. I have one but I'd like to have a couple more to outfit my multiple kits. I have one for my Harley, one for my snowmobile, one for hiking and then a larger EMS kit in my truck in case I respond direct to an MVA, etc. That's a lot of money in TQs.

Recon medical TQs seem to be very good for the price, about 15 bucks.

Don't get me wrong, I'm only buying CAT and SOF-T, but I have heard stories of the wings on the CATs breaking in colder weather. Are those unfounded?
That was an issue on the early Gen cats.
We buy the made in china cheapies for in class demonstrations, training and practice. Buy a good one for your kit. I like the Recon Med. I would like to see more comparison between NAR and Recon Med.
I have a badass knockoff, that's Coyote Tan, and it only takes one turn to cinch it down. Got a real Gen 7 (I hope) on the way now, so the knockoff will be a backup. But it is off of Amazon, so I'm researching how to make sure it's real when it gets here 😂
It is really, really simple and valid for all chinese products: You can get a real bargain, but you can also get absolute garbage. Chinese are able to manufacture everything we are able to do just as well. They simply skip quality control and ship out everything they produce.
Therefore it is pretty simple: If you are able to judge the Quality of a product by looking at it, touching it and testing it, then you are fine, although you might have to order twice. If you are unable to do this then you risk a life with it and you should get a quality brand.
You wouldn't believe the fakes that are on amazon right now. Exact marking as NAR, and exact packaging. only way I was able to tell was the amount of shiny dots near the red tab and the "time was shifted towards the center of the strap.

Don't forget you can use a shirt and a stick or your belt or a ratchet strap as a tourniquet in a pinch even if your budget is $0 training is the first thing to get
It may be hard to stomach $30/$40 per TQ on something you may never use but this is really something you shouldn't skimp on by buying on ebay or amazon for $5-$10. It might work, it might not.

Biggest issue i have is finding a real CAT tq. I live in the UK and there is loads of fakes. Would be so much better if there was a supplier here that NAR said is a proper direct seller of the CAT

Correction. Apply the tourniquet as high up as you can otherwise you might get nerve damage!

There's no way the real CAT costs them 4 times as much to manufacture. They're just price gouging big time.

Beware of Recon TQs*
The rectangle plastic pad that sits under the winless is made out of a thin shitty plastic that will flex and bend when you spin the winless. So often, it will not stop arterial flow.
TLDR: the CAT gen 7 has a THINNER "thin shitty plastic" piece
I have a CAT Gen 7 (Lot 101K149) sitting in front of me and a Recon Medical Gen 3 (Lot JUN 16 2020) sitting next to it, the plastic piece that you are referring to measures .072" on the CAT and .080 on the Recon Medical. both will flex and bend under light finger pressure but that doesn't stop them from working as that is not the part of the TQ that creates the occlusive force but rather part of the anchoring point for the windless, the occlusive force is created from the Nylon straps that run the full length of the TQs from the butt end where both TQs *appear to be folded 180degrees and melt-welded into themselves, to the tip where the CAT is Melt-welded and the tip of the Recon Medical has similar melt-welding spot pattern, but then there is a melt-welded finger hole that has to go through most of the occlusion strap, but there is also a double stitch line about 3" from the end ( 1.5" from the hole) that also secures the Nylon strap..
* now I have this desire to ruin both of these TQs (in the name of education of course..) to see how secure the butt end actually is, compare the two, and see why neither of the manufactures feel the need to put a extra stitch line there...
I got the CATs for my kit and the Recon Medical to test the quality and as a less expensive trainer option for myself, family, and friends.
I understand that quality and quality control are absolutely VITAL in this case but besides the aforementioned difference in the tips and the aluminum windless on the Recon Medical the TQs I received appear identical in quality
in this case it would appear to me that the difference of price reflects the cost of a TCCC rating.
Edit: I have heard that the Recon Medical are made in china vs made NAR CAT in USA, so that reflects price as well.
I have no field use of either of them yet (thankfully) but after quite a few uses of the Recon Medical I think I'd trust my life to it as well as the CAT, obviously both preferably new... although somehow not testing something seems wrong because ANYTHING can fail.. which is where quality control really plays it's role..
one extra note I have noticed while training with a TQ, for best use and effectiveness you may want to reset that inner nylon strap by fully stretching the TQ out after you use it so that it doesn't gather a loose pucker at the windless. can make the difference of over a full turn of pressure by just resetting the strap..

Unfortunately, these items you're promoting are "Quite EXPENSIVE" for a LOT of people.
The one's that are $8-$9 on Amazon compared to yours for $35-$40???
That's "4" for the price of 1.
Many of us, especially on a fixed income who prep the best we can with what we have, Simply CAN'T afford $35 tourniquets.
So, an $8 tourniquet is a LOT better than Nothing.
If yours were maybe Half that price we Maybe Could Consider it. But Definitely Not At That Price.

I think his stance is more of if you are in a situation where you need a tourniquet than 100% reliability isn't really a luxury at that point, you might not have a 2nd chance if it breaks. I have 1 CAT and some recon medical ones that are cheaper, but I wouldn't trust the $8 ones for the circumstances that they will be used in. If you're prepping for a situation and you cheap out and it doesn't work than you didn't actually prep, you just wasted money.
