First Look Inside a Billet Sequential Trans for my '67 C10! Finnegan's Garage Ep.99

  • The last few last big pieces of the puzzle to rebuild my slammed 1967 Chevy C10 project truck are now in place. We just installed a billet 6xdgearbox.com sequential six-speed gearbox and Mantic USA twin-disc clutch on the back of the supercharged Chevy LT4 engine. The transmission can be shifted through all six gears super fast and without lifting off the gas pedal or using the clutch. It's an all-aluminum case machined from solid billets and with o-rings everywhere for easy serviceability. The clutch is capable of holding 1,000 lb-ft of torque and can be rebuilt and upgraded for more power later on.
Now that the trans and driveshaft are in and now we can make a realistic list of the remaining fabrication, plumbing and wiring jobs to perform we can drive this badass truck.
Want this trans? visit www.6xdgearbox... to order yours.

Will Wood 16k for a truck transmission isn’t crazy depending on the use. But using a sequential autocross style transmission on a bagged and bodied truck? Not that you can’t auto cross air ride set up properly. Either way I’m all for it 100%.

@@GarageBilt that's what I was thinking, it's overkill. And I've had fully built transmissions capable of handling 800hp built for a lot less. This was a marketing promo which is fine but let's not think he's forking out the cash for it.

Did you here him say at the beginning he met these guys at sema which means he prolly isn't paying much for the trans but he has to have these guys on his channel and I not sure how it works with TH-cam but when you hook someone up with free parts for advertising usually there more to it then just this ep and a free trans he will prolly have to give more thumbs up and interviews about it and he will become the face of that company for a bit " look that box is good enough for fennagen it's must be a bad ass trans" but I'm not sure TH-camrs really understand sponsorship

What a beautiful piece if engineering. I LOVE seeing things like this. Same reason I love watching the koenigsegg videos with christian von koenigsegg so much. People that actually know 110% the ins and outs of the product and a product that is highly engineered and very well thought out. So much of it being pieced so you can simply replace small parts instead of large assemblies is awesome too. Wicked.

This may be the first transmission that I've ever seen for about 15 minutes...and in that same time, realized exactly how easy it is to rebuild or service. Props to 6XD for such an intelligent design. It's too bad simplicity like this doesn't transfer over with simpler (if cruder) cast parts for low HP, mass-production applications. It'd be nice if the average stick vehicle came with a transmission this easy to service in it...

That's not expensive for what it is. Spindle time is expensive, and as tolerances tighten, prices increase exponentially. Grinding, polishing, heat and cryo treating gearsets is insanely expensive. Hopefully these will see wide adoption in the higher ranks of racing, and the rest of us will be able to pick up used ones in the future.

Gotta say that 6xd trans has me really thinking about a drag application. We drag race a 69 Nova that belonged to my buddies son who passed away a year and a half ago at 19 yrs old from a horrible disease! Only producing about 450hp on a bbc carbureted on E85 (new upgrade this year on a fresh rebuild) but plenty fast for him as we’ve only been racing for one season. His son loved drag racing and loved his car nicknamed Black Thunder. This 6XD would be a whole new ball game and I believe make us even faster. Got some serious talking to do!! Thanks for this video.

This is a nice box. Im a motorcycle mech and the weak point on this type of box is the dogs and shift forks. The replaceable dogs are a damn good idea and the forks look super sturdy. Nice. And Finn ,regarding blipping the throttle on blasphemy, i have a quickshifter on my roadrace bikes that has a load sensor on the gear lever that as soon as it senses a load will cut the ignition for a adjustable length of time. No letting off the throttle or touching the clutch, just push the lever. Once you have the delay dialled in its as smooth as silk.

The one thing I love about this channel the most besides it being entertaining and extremely informative is that you don't cut corners you play the video out and I'm okay with a 30 minute video 40 minutes even an hour video when it has to do with cars or pretty much anything with a motor and that's pretty much all you're going to have as an audience is Car Guys and gals and I'm sure they believe the same thing that I do and that's the longer video is not a bad thing and it's not going to ruin your Channel if anything it's the opposite

these are one of those things that lots of people want but very few can afford. this transmission starts around $17,000, not including specialty parts for your application. its out of reach for most people. i also understand that its not necessarily meant for a beater. as an alternative in the racing world, this is quite the deal honestly.
i fully understand the amount of engineering, research, testing, and costs associated with limited production items. i really wish all those things didnt require the price to be that high so that it really was more accessible.
i dont fault this company for charging what they do, theyre in business to solve a problem and make money for their hard work and time. if i ever hit the lottery, im calling these people up. its really is pretty amazing. my favorite part is the serviceability, you dont often see that in items like this due to the greed by forcing limited parts availability.

I know these are working well in the 2500-3000 HP big power Vipers. It's been a long time, but Vipers finally have a gearbox that will take some power. Back when I was "in the game" for TT Vipers, transmissions were the limitation. We could make so much more power in the V-10 as compared to what could be reliably sent to the rear tires.

I’m working on a ‘70 GMC right now. It is set up for an auto trans (and have a 400 to put in it), but would love to stuff that T56 manual in it. I wish I had the same budget as Finn, but I don’t mind getting my truck driving and slowly upgrading it over the years.
Great video as usual. This is such an informative vid for someone like me who aspires to be a real gearhead someday.

  • @immikeurnot

You've still got to interrupt the torque to get the dogs to let go, though. You can see how the dogs are back-cut to prevent them jumping apart when you put power to it. Instead, they pull harder together the more torque you put into them. So unless you have a system to either kill spark or "burp" the throttle, you're not doing flat-out shifting on this box, either.
Put a momentary ignition kill switch on Blasphemy. They're built right into the shifter on rally cars and such. It looks like they might have those built into the shifter mechanism of this particular transmission. But it just kills power for an instant so that the dogs unload and release for the shift to happen.
