    I think all that "blah blah blah" at the beginning gives great insight into why you have such a warm and kind-hearted presence. It must be such a blessing to not only have been raised to be open to everyone but to have a father who grew up that way.

    A note on the "haute couture" aspect of the apparel at the beginning of your "coats" segment: After the untimely death of Dior in Paris, his protégé (Yves St Laurent) was named the new head of the fashion house. What you are seeing here - is St Laurent's international influence of his immensely successful debut collection focused on the "A-Line" cuts, which he appropriately entitled "La Trapeze". Editorial at that time heaped praise on the new designer, waxing poetic with words such as: "St Laurent has saved Paris".

    • @c3cubed
      @c3cubed ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@LannieLord It's a stressful business. He had a heart attack. Most everyone smoked in those days, yet didn't always die from cigarettes. Today, heart attacks suddenly seem to be quite common post-covid in non-smokers, especially with very young and fit, healthy athletes. I find that a more curious phenomenon.

    Nothing was as gorgeous or classic as the women's clothing of the 40s and 50s. It amazed me that most of the shoes could be worn fashionably today. All the girdles reminded me of my grandmother (born in '21) who wore one every day of her life. And the memories of my mother's (born in '49) vast slip collection. We are much more comfortable but often makes me wonder if we have left some glamour behind along the way.

    Just for context, $200 in 1958 is equal to $2100 in today's money (adjusted for inflation). So basically add a 0 on the end of the prices (7.98 would be 70.98). As for photo retouching, in the pre photoshop days it was a mixture of lighting, makeup and actually retouching the negative before printing. As an amateur photographer it's really fascinating to see. This catalog and walkthrough was really cool as always

    My family is from the Bay as well. Newark for my dad, Fremont and Union City for my mom. They were more connected to a lot of the issues being a middle class pair of Black families but the Bay was always diverse. One of the enduring things I live about it (I was born in Oakland) is how folks just interact. You find a way to meet people where they’re at. I have Filipino, Jewish, white, Samoan and Mexican friends along with my Black ones. It was never a thing.

    The one memory that I have as a kid in the 1970's that stands out regarding the Vietnam war was when I would listen to the radio and hear about the violent 'guerillas' attacking a village. I was confused because the gorillas that I saw in the zoo were very interesting and amusing. We were not exposed to all the horrors that the kids today are. Wow! It was such a trip into history. And if you Imagine that $1 in 1950 is worth $12.66 today! It was not cheap. I miss waiting for the catalogs. Here in Germany we had Otto, Quelle and Neckermann as the big three. One of them alone had a weight you could do work outs with 😂
    Yeah… some things were better back then 😮‍💨
    Thanks for this perfect video ❤
    Oh and btw: you look amazing!!!

    Do you all think there were more selections for women back then? Or maybe I’m just getting older at 52 and I feel like I can’t find clothes for my age? I’m stuck in between ages! Lol 😂. I really enjoyed this!

    I would like to Thank you not only for your exceptional content but also for the times that you reminisce about your youth. In my opinion, the age of innocence died with the introduction of the internet to the masses. There was definitely an advantage to having only 5 television channels and HBO. Too much information at your fingertips kind of steals the simplicity and enjoyment of youth. I often leave my cell phone at home when I go to the grocery store, kind of like my own personal time machine back to the landline days... aka Freedom from technology.

    Amazon is the new Wards, Sears and Penney catalogs. And lots of times you will get it the next day! But, I must admit, not as much fun as leafing through a “real” catalog! Joy S from Northern Indiana

    Thank you for sharing Jeannie 🤗! I have to say, I’ve been a subscriber now for 6 months I’d say, & I just want you to know how much I enjoy coming on this app & having a video like yours to be able to look forward to. You have helped me not only in the asmr aspect, but also just to take a good look at life & to remind myself of the fonder memories that I have when things have gotten tough. And I thank you for that. You may not know how amazing you are, but I wanted to be one of the many to remind you that you are. This world has truly been blessed by having you be one of its many gifts by sharing your wisdom & passions with us. I thank you again, & may God bless you & your beautiful family 🤍!

    If I were a dictator, I would make every woman in the country dress like the one in that catalog. The fashion police would walk the streets and monitor the observance of cuts and styles. "Sorry ma'am, you must come with us"

    Your magazine reading brings back happy memories of my grandmother and myself reading tabloid magaines in her trailer late at night. You radiate the same warmth and kindness as her.
    It would be interesting to look back on older Avon magazines - my mom was a rep in the early 80s, and I know that a long time ago they used to have their perfumes stored in the coolest looking bottles!
