For every huge, bombastic, hilarious failure like Anthem or Gollum or Redfall; there are ten boring, dull, uninteresting failures that completely vanish from collective human consciousness in a matter of weeks. Godfall, D&D Dark Alliance, Gotham Knights, Marvel's The Avengers, Wolfenstein Youngblood, like 5 of the Assassin's Creed games, Disney Infinity, Outriders, Biomutant. When was the last time you even THOUGHT about any of these? These games aren't funny-bad, they're just bad - they are destined to join a mass grave of untold thousands, forgotten by history.
It's like every Ubisoft game since Far Cry 2 and all the CoDs I guess. In my head I keep conflating the Advanced Warfare and COD BLOPS 3 campaign and it's been like a decade.

Anthem has good gunplay and good movement, kinda-nice background and graphics, everything else is suck balls, so this game is actually a tech demo of how cool basic mechanics could be, they forgot to make variety, progression, story, but did not forget to make microtransactions.
Well, as far as I remember, this game was made in about 18 months. And the years before that were just pre production and Bioware banging their heads against the wall trying to decide what kind of game they wanted to make.
"We screwed around for five years so we had to rush game dev in 18 months on our billion dollar new IP" isn't really an excuse. More a damning indictment of the failures of Bioware.
@@operatchick6486 Yeah most of the time the blame can be placed on the publisher but there's a few times the blame is definitely on the Developer. Redfall also comes to mind, though I guess that was sort of Zenimax and MS should have cancelled the game.
I remember reading about the production of Anthem and that EA had basically nothing to do with the game other than telling BioWare to keep the flying in. Anthem flopping was entirely on BioWare’s leadership.
@@forff1111 Cause the game was in development for 7 years. You can't just keep giving studios "more time." Eventually you have to say enough is enough and ship a product. Bioware (A team) had so many managements issue and internal studio conflict that wouldn't been fixed with "more time." Hell, Bioware (A team) didn't want to take any help or feedback from B team (SWTOR Team). The leadership team kept pushing this fake thing called "Bioware Magic"... etc The only thing EA can be blamed for is them forcing Bioware to use Frostbite. EDIT: Also, from the sounds of development, had EA given Bioware more time. They would have used that time to further lollygagg. They didn't actually start getting to work on the game until EA had given them a hard deadline.

Shame this game turned out the way it did while also having probably one of the best jetpack flying mechanics ive ever seen. The vertical map littered with waterfalls and streams for you to cool down your jets. It was easy to fly from one end to the other without landing.
I will always be infuriated to the fact that they abandoned the idea of fixing Mass Effect Andromeda to work on Anthem only for them to abandon it as well making it absolutely pointless that they abandoned Andromeda which they could have saved
I really like this new youtube feature. Most """content""" """creators""" are using it to game the algorithm and find out what thumbnail brings the most views but the good content creators like oboe and IH are using it like a comic book with limited time alternate covers.
Say what you will about Warframe, it's a game with a heckuva lot of stuff in it. Kind of rough to get into, for a new player, and that's a major flaw I have to admit even as a long-time fan and player. Also some of the in-game obtainment methods are ridiculously grindy. Others, merely quite grindy. But there's a lot of room to have fun doing stuff you enjoy, and I respect them for that, at least!

Fun fact, during Anthem's development, Bioware kept flip flopping on keeping the flying system into the game and it's only still in the game because the CEO of EA played an early build of Anthem and was angry they cut the feature and demanded they add flying back in. The only good aspect of the game is only there because of the corporate overlord of EA.

One of my friends was hired straight out of high school to work at BioWare. He was a bug fixer for anthem and he was always so excited to talk about this game.
there used to be an MMO shooter with similar abilities, guns and air movement - Firefall, - but it died a long time ago. This missile rain ultimate, for example, belonged to Arsenal dreadnought frame and was called Micromissiles and it was as undeniably awesome there as it is here :) but the falling-from-the-sky move closer to the end - Crater as it was called in Firefall - was a lot more fun, could modify it too to deploy a shield after the impact. Lots of abilities could be modded to do something extra.
Having played Anthem for approximately 45 minutes. I can confidently say that your "flavorless gum" metaphor was spot on. Probably the best description of this game.

Anthem is like a girl inviting you over for some full blown seggs, sloppy toppy and all but she just gives you a sleepy handy instead, but at least she looks good. I haven't played it but this is the impression I get
This game is an amalgamation of every terrible feature of games that came before it. Boring hub world, most customization of your mech being strictly cosmetic. Grinding the same boss in the same area, only this time, it has a blue health bar over the green one. That being said, the traversal of the environment, the movement of your mech, and the graphics were all topnotch.
Honestly this game had incredible POTENTIAL. So much so that i think it deserves a remake. Like a full-blown reboot. Switch to Unreal Engine 5, and keep the good stuff (flying, combat, animations, etc) overhaul the story, game world, etc and it could be awesome. Also, make it more how the E3 demo promised lol. Just...dont dick around for 5 years hemming and hawing about "tHe DirEcTioN wE WanT tO TakE tHe GaMe." Just DO IT!
Played this for free, and for that price tag, it was alright. The flying was fun, but that's to be expected when that's literally all that is on offer.

The thing is, the game looks fucking cool and sounds pretty good. There’s just no variety and the story is ass. It could’ve been fantastic with a skilled and dedicated team working on it.
This one hurts me. I initially played this game hard for about 3 weeks after launch and then all of my friends dropped the game all together. In late 2021 I went back solo and finished out the trophy list.
I feel that an often overlooked port of anthem was the javelin customization. You select the material for primary, secondary, and tertiary and have a color wheel for those aside from some of the metallic materials but they had a good amount of options still. That level of customization was absolutely awesome and honestly I had fun just playing around with different ideas, making abominations of color, chromed out mechs, and personally esthetically pleasing designs. It felt that the looting, story, and out of javelin parts were lacking, but the rest was pretty fleshed out. Shame it got axed before the planned overhaul because a comeback for this game would have been nice.
no. it died because 4 player co-op is garbage. either have it multiplayer outright or keep it single player. cod games are the exception; because thats just fps. anthem is not fps.
Unpopular opinion, but I loved this game. Interceptor gameplay was the perfect thing for my ADHD brain. I also found the world quite interesting and really liked the overall design philosophy. Sadly bugs kept appearing instead of being fixed and the game became unplayable.
Probably not that unpopular of an opinion. The game is fun but the problem is that it's supremely shallow which kills the interest and longevity of it pretty quickly. Good bones but no meat, yknow?
My favourite thing about Anthem is that even the story is about how the world is left unfinished and was rushed to release.

Having played the game Freelancer, I can confirm that this is what usually happens.
Now that was a good game, still haven't played any other space fighter game that manages to capture that feel.

Movie theater for sure. The one closest to me has a little food place with a kitchen in the back, and an arcade, got lots of space too.

flying around with jetpack and shooting enemies and using your abilities was fun. so barren of content to keep you coming back. What I remember playing at launch

once you realize that all your missions are THE SAME . and the loot is THE SAME. and the LOADING IS HORRIBLE... and the town is so boring.

There was so much potential. The flight felt great. The abilities were neat... the game just didn't get the support and work it needed.

The thing is, the game looks fucking cool and sounds pretty good. There’s just no variety and the story is ass. It could’ve been fantastic with a skilled and dedicated team working on it.
All they needed was content. If they gave this to the chinese they'd have a whole new map to discover in 6 months.
This one hurts me. I initially played this game hard for about 3 weeks after launch and then all of my friends dropped the game all together. In late 2021 I went back solo and finished out the trophy list.

I feel that an often overlooked port of anthem was the javelin customization. You select the material for primary, secondary, and tertiary and have a color wheel for those aside from some of the metallic materials but they had a good amount of options still. That level of customization was absolutely awesome and honestly I had fun just playing around with different ideas, making abominations of color, chromed out mechs, and personally esthetically pleasing designs. It felt that the looting, story, and out of javelin parts were lacking, but the rest was pretty fleshed out. Shame it got axed before the planned overhaul because a comeback for this game would have been nice.
no. it died because 4 player co-op is garbage. either have it multiplayer outright or keep it single player. cod games are the exception; because thats just fps. anthem is not fps.

Unpopular opinion, but I loved this game. Interceptor gameplay was the perfect thing for my ADHD brain. I also found the world quite interesting and really liked the overall design philosophy.
Sadly bugs kept appearing instead of being fixed and the game became unplayable.
Probably not that unpopular of an opinion. The game is fun but the problem is that it's supremely shallow which kills the interest and longevity of it pretty quickly. Good bones but no meat, yknow?
