Honda Talon Tires - 32's or 30's?

- One question that always comes up about the Honda Talon when upgrading the tires is "What kind of power loss will i have and would I be better off going with 30's". In this video, we set out to answer that question. Joe lays down some lap times on the 32" Tusk Terrabites then swaps tires with Dave and puts in some laps on 30" Maxis Liberty tires.

Me personally I would stick with the 32s also. It would be different if al I ran was clean trails and dunes but if you’re getting in the rocks and doing some serious stuff ground clearance is a premium and you want all you can get. And if you want a little more juice an exhaust and a tune makes a huge difference. But it’s like anything it depends on what you’re doing and what you’re opinion is because everybody has one. I was close to buying a turbo s but your swaying me to a talon
32" suck up power, harder on suspension components. I put 30" BFG's on mine.

Great comparison. In all fairness should have run on pavement to off set for grip and tire spin but non the less love the vid! I have Tensor 30's on my x4 LV but have no real comparison since i had them installed b4 picking up machine so I appreciate the comparison. Keep up the great work guys. Thanks for watching! The reason we decided on dirt was mainly because that’s where people ride. Good call though. The terrabites definitely grabbed better than the liberty’s. -Joe

Interesting indeed, I would have thought you might have gone with the 30's. I have a Tensor 32 some jack a** left on the trail in Sedona. I think the Sport would look a bit too Tennessee. ;)

What does the 32’s actually measure in height ?
The 32" Terrabites actually run about 30.5"
That 3 gear lug and the log off the line would drive me insane. I mainly ride in souther California so its all hammer down desert screaming around here. 30s it is.
Maybe have two sets? One set of say 29’s for rippin like dirt roads and dunes. Then a set of 32’s for rock crawling...
I still have my stock tires...I may end up grabbing a set of wheels just so I can have two sets... -Joe

I just changed out my stock 28” with System 3 XTR 30”. The new tires really softened up the harsh ride. I don’t know if it’s the difference in tires or the size that smoothed things out. Im guessing both are factors.
Wish you guys had done same lap test on the XRC with the stock 30 inch and 32’s. Nice video though!

Great video! BTW those dumptrucks and stuff -- was that in Warner Valley? When I was there last Thanksgiving, it was starting to look like they were going to develop it. I'm worried they'll turn it into another residential area ad we'll lose yet another place to camp and ride.
Not exactly sure what they’re doing but it may have something to do with the new reservoir going in there. -Joe
They have run a new pipeline from sand Hollow over to Warner valley. That road Joe was running on is where the pipeline is. They’re currently building a water tank in the area where we were changing tires.

What width were the 30’s? I am debating on going to a 31x10.5x15 dot tire all the way around on stock wheel. I am unsure if I want the 10.5 wide or if a 9.5 would be better.

Didn't you do this test a while back when you first got your 32's, and compared them to the little OEM 28's? If I recall, there was a huge 0-60 difference with those. Since 0-60 times mean absolutely nothing to me, I would also stick with your 32's for the off-road performance. If I wanted to drag race and see how fast I could go, I would have bought a turbo.
Yes, I compared the stock tires to the 32’s and there is/was a substantial difference but like you said, drag racing doesn’t mean much at all to most people. I’m happy with the low end performance with 32’s. -Joe

@@johnferreira174 I would have to say yes, just like changing tire size does with everything else, but who cares? It's a UTV. Who cares if it's off by a couple mph?

Joe I’m sold on the 30” Tusk Terrabite. I’m not sure what size to order since the front rims are wider than the back ones. I have your same rig. What do you recommend.

Hey Joe, do you feel that the 32's have any impact on the drivetrain reliability? I've read somewhere (in all my research) that 3" oversize is safe and I believe the Talons come stock with 28" tires. I personally want to outfit mine (if I ever get it) with the 32" tires because of the type of driving I intend to do here in Idaho. Thanks for all your videos, I'm learning a lot.
Thanks! I’ve heard the same thing. I wouldn’t go bigger than 32’s myself but plenty of people do. The terrabites are a good in between because they run small. At 8-10 psi, mine are just shy of 31”. -Joe
My 32 are rubbing when I turn, should I use spacers
Spacers will help, I have used them on a couple of machines but stay at 1 1/2” or smaller.
Doesn’t necessarily have to do with this video. But I have the same talon x4 live valve. I’m reaching out to people to see what they are doing for power steering issues. I run 30” Terrabites and my power steering cuts out all the time. I’ve also heard a ton of other people having the same issue. Does anyone sell a upgraded power steering to fix this problem?
What is the actual ground clearance difference between the 30s and 32s?
Roughly 1 inch. Hard to believe but 1” is noticeable. -Joe

I'm running the 31 carnivores on mine off the new krx
The Carnivores are a great tire for the first 1000 miles. They were really fast; just be forewarned. Mine are pretty much dead at 1300; there's about 1/2" of very rounded lug left.

Where your 32” on the stick rims? I can’t seem to find 32’s in the stock rims with a of 9” and 11”???

Yes there is some rubbing on compression.
Do you say your sticking with 32's then right after says the 30's...Or can i not hear very well

Question Joe I’m having trouble deciding on a KRX or The Talon live valve 4 seater like them both any thoughts....
I’m a big fan of my Talon and if I had to do it all over again I’d choose the same rig. With that said the KRX suspension is designed better and has some better potential. For me the KRX wasn’t even in the cards because I need a four seater. I don’t think you can make the wrong decision on this one but if you would like to have three or four passengers in the car with you 15% or more of the time, I’d go with the Talon. I have a 2-seater Talon X, and my buddy has a KRX. Enormous difference in these 2 machines. The Talon is stiff, and punchy. It also has a jerky throttle, when trying to go slow on rough terrain. If you like feeling “engaged” with your machine, punching it out of turns, and changing gears, then go with the Talon. However, if you like to crawl around the trails slowly, and want a really soft, plush ride, go with the KRX. Go watch “Corny” ride his KRX, on AdrenalineJunkiePOD’s channel. His KRX makes the climbs look easier than everyone else’s machines.
What is the total height of your Talon X 4 Seater with the 32” tires???
I just left it up at my buddies cabin so I’m not able to measure. It’s extra high with the shock therapy springs though. 16” of ground clearance

My husband is getting an x4 this week and wondering if the 32 inch terrabites rub at all anywhere or any problems staying on stock wheel just like yours
They do rub just a little when going over some big bumps with the steering wheel fully turned. Other than that no issues
Very little rub on driver side at full wheel lock and full bump. I’d buy the same tires again. it’s not enough to worry about. - Joe

I have a talon 4 seater on stocks. How big of a clearance change did you see by going to 32s? I know basic math says 4” but that’s not always the case depending.

So which is it? At 10:45 you say you're going to "gonna stick with the 32's really like 'em" and then at 10:56 you say " I'm going to stick with the 30's".... HUH?

Hey Joe,
Another question or 2 about the terrabites. I can see they are on the stock rims.. I had previously purchased a OEM front tire and rim in case of a flat. Of course I just got a flat this weekend. The Talon has different width rims front and back. Here are my questions.
1. I guess you cannot "rotate" them?
2. Since the back rim is "wider" do those tires change the width of the vehicle front and back?
3. So you can put 32x10x15 tires on a 9" wide front and an 11" wide rear rim?

You’re right, they can be rotated because of the offset. In an emergency you’d be fine to get off the trail though. As for the tires, they fit both width of wheels and since the wheels have different offsets, the track width is still even with the terrabites. -Joe
