  • After 2 weeks and multiple rides in the Talon, it's time for Dave to give his thoughts on the Talon X-4 Live Valve. He spent time in the Rock, in the sand and on some hard pack trails. So after all that, what did he think? Watch the vid to find out.

      Nothing yet. $1700 miles in. I did pop some plastic off the bottom of the rear fender dragging it on rocks. Rock sliders are on the list but I may go with full skids that wrap up around the bottom of the rig. -Joe

    First of all your running it with the wrong size tires on it so the transmission is not going to work properly and shift at the correct timing. Thus could have an affect on all of your complaints.

    I own the same unit with 30" tires. Wish you would have made this video a few months ago. I concur with all your findings. Looking to sell my Talon and put a deposit on the new Speed UTV. Sold myself on the Talon because of the DCT, in hindsight proper clutching on a CVT you shouldn't have belt issues.

  • @dono4598
    @dono4598 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey DVE, thanks for your unbiased opinion. I was really considering the X-4 live valve but after Ray Horvath Productions experience with the induction issue and how Honda handed it I started to wonder if this was truly the machine for me. The DCT was a big reason for my consideration but I feel that anyone with some mechanical skill given the need and with a little pre-ride inspection could eliminate a blown belt and with practice and the proper tool kit and preparation could minimize the frustration of changing a belt on the trail. I think I may change my focus to a cvt machine. Thanks to everyone at DOR for the time, energy and effort that you put into these videos I know it aint easy! I think now I may go back to my original choice with Polaris XP 4 1000, really like the Dynamix and the ride command but not sure if I'm willing to pay the price. Again, thanks for sharing.

      Deranged Off-Road this is my first side x side. I’ve actually never even driven one before I bought it ... ( I couldn’t wait for the quarantine to lift so I could go rent one...) 😬. I love the machine. It seems plenty fast, I enjoy talking it sideways on the corners. The overall interior and exterior to me seem better than the Polaris or the Maverick. I’m running up on 70 miles on the machine, so far from the time I’ve driven it I really enjoy it.

    • @DerangedOffRoad

      Awesome! I’ve really enjoyed mine as well. I also enjoy getting loose in the corners and the talon makes that happen when you want it to better than most. It’s a great machine for the majority of people. -Joe

    How did the counseling for Dave go? He needs presentation work. People don't want a sales pitch, but they don't want "Eh... it's OK." either. How was the transmission on the climb? "Eh... a little jumpy on the slow stuff." What does that mean exactly?Feedback on Live Valve was more meaningful - and good recommendation on saving the coin for an aftermarket (better) setup. Perhaps incorporate some rating scale numbers and criteria into your review. Give us a frame of reference.

    Think I would probably buy a Maverick Sport Max if I where going to get a 4 seater. I may consider a Talon but I don’t care for Honda as much. Honda guys look at it as they don’t have a belt and think that makes the transmission better. You can look at it coming from the other way though, and say I want the weakest place to be the belt. That way a belt keeps the pressure off the internal transmission parts and when something does fail, I would much rather replace a 200 dollar belt than be tearing apart a transmission to replace gears or synchros. Just my 2 cents had both Honda and Kawasaki ATVs.

      If a belt fails on a day of riding you can be back at it in 45 minutes. I'm not sure I'd want it any other way. It gives me confidence when off road to know that virtually anything can break and at worst I can limp home.

    • @DerangedOffRoad
      @DerangedOffRoad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a big if. The trans in the Talon has been VERY reliable. There has been issues with the sub trans due to operator error or improperly adjusted shift cable though and in those cases, you still have high gear. I’ll start believing this argument when I start hearing about Talons needing to be towed home on the trail. At this point, I’ve heard of ZERO examples... - Joe

      Deranged Off-Road I can agree there Joe my comment was just that in the event that something did go wrong the cost involved would be significantly higher than replacing a belt. The reason I say this is I had a 420 rancher that would slip slightly in between 3rd and 4th gear. It would rev then bog then take off a lot like a clutch going bad in a manual transmission car. It was after warranty I had less than 1k miles on it and I just had to live with it because I didn’t want to tear my new machine apart and couldn’t afford to fix it at the time. I ended up selling it and I guess that’s where I get my stance on this at. I do like Honda’s now days I just pick the CVT over the DCT. This was also many years ago when the electronic shift was new. I’m sure they have it perfected.
