Definitely wasn't expecting the last 20 minutes of this episode to turn into The Thing meets Scanners. The only major fault in the writing was introducing an existential threat to every humanoid species in the galaxy, only for them to be defeated and forgotten by the next episode.

The tone of the show combined with this odd episode was a real mindfuck as a first exposure.

In the 80s when this aired, there was a craze of toy monster creation playsets using toxic chemicals to make slimy, squishy monsters and bugs that looked like poisonous candles and gummies. I always believed that the props department probably used these Kit's to create those sad looking alien bug creatures. They did have a very limited budget, and building the sets took up most of it. Robert Schenkann probably got sick from just having that thing in his mouth. No wonder Picard grimaced. It probably smelled like ass too.

I heard that when Patrick Stewart did this scene at 9:01 he accidently knocked the female captain's arm back it went to far back and injured the actress she was reacting in real pain . and when the admiral was running away in the hallway when his back is to us and when he is phasered in the back by Picard and Riker and when he falls down it is a stunt double .

Captain Tryla Scott. Picard said she made captain faster than anyone else, himself included. If Trek wanted to make a kick-ass woman of color captain, they should have built a series around her. That would have made sense, been in continuity and they wouldn't have to retcon the whole universe with Michael Burnam. ... just put her on the opposite end of a federation and set it in the same time. Would have been so good. I want to know more about her.

How could Geordi survive being thrown though the doors? And aren't the doors strong enough to withstand a heavy impact? I guess they made doors out of breadsticks in the first season. Good episode but yes, very goofy and when analyzing it, makes you ask more questions.

Best Space fight ever, you heard of the Picard manoeuvre, that was the Riker Kick, also Beverly at her hottest shoot out of power, I had a huge crush on her all throughout TNG, but originally this set up was meant to be like a borg threat for later (I think). and for years and years in the UK the whole exploding head, and body was never shown, just cut out of it, and years later like mid to late 90's when sky TV showed TNG I was shocked over my dinner one night to see this episode as it was exploding head and all. but I never liked that sci fi trope of "ooh mother alien dies, all others do too" thats what spoiled Falling skies for me, it all seemed like a kool show right up to, Mother alien pops off, and all others too, imagine how bad Aliens would be, if they used that idea.

I would say its only good because season one had a lot of lame episodes i don't hate season one like a lot of others do and i felt it had its moments. I thought it was entertaining and it shook things up. But when you think about it there are a lot of dumb moments to many scenes happened and i wondered why they doing this oh cause the writer needs it to happen . In terms of the stop motion and other vfx i can forgive a lot being a filmmaker and having almost not money to work with i can forgive some dodgy stop motion Ive done a lot of it and its hard. Alot of times when i see media that has little money to work with i can applaud the ingenuity rather then the end product

I dont know if anyone has ever mentioned it before, but the parasitical race in this episode shares some similiarities with the Goauld from Stargate SG-1. The episode was released in 1988, 6 years before The Stargate movie and 9 years before Stargate SG-1. I wonder if this is where Stargate SG1 got the idea from.

I liked the episode despite the bad effects that were common in the first season. The fight scenes were typical TOS fights. They clearly had other actors fighting rather than the "stars" of the show. Kirk's double was rather obvious even back then. The acting wasn't all that great at times. There were the "why did they do that?" moments as well. At least the alien species was not the typical bipedal humanoid with a funky nose/forehead that was typical in the rest of the series (lazy and unimaginative that went against everything we know about biology). The small parasite gave off a "Ceti eel" vibe from "Star Trek : The Wrath of Kahn". They should have used it to infect the Borg in some way. There are a lot of plot vectors they could have taken with that. I've read that the species was "reworked" into the Borg, but even if it was, they could have had some fun with it by the Borg (attempting to) assimilate it (and maybe failing, with disasterlus results), the species taking the Borg over and using the Borg for their own nefarious plans, or somewhere in between. It was a good episode though.

There was a rumor floating around for awhile that this was meant to be the Borg equivalent, but didn't get a sequel due to being too expensive to produce.
I guess it's not true since Memory Alpha doesn't acknowledge it, but I can see why it had legs for as long as it did. Now the story is that this parasite was associated with the Borg.

  • @AJFisherDesign
    @AJFisherDesign ปีที่แล้ว

Good video. I enjoyed the pacing & humor. I think this STTNG episode may be revisited with Picard this season. There’s a bunch of evidence. Picards old pal Walker Keel tells him not to trust anyone. Beverly says this in the new teaser and another character asks “Is anyone you know, still them?” The antagonist says we shall have “vengeance” which is understandable considering Riker & Picard destroyed the mother creature. The Shrike ship has pincer like things on the front. The parasites could probably infect multiple species. Beverly knew the most about their physiology so she could be a target.

I didn't like this episode, it felt like the Super computer of Superman II, or other such, 'unbeatable enemies' which they beat in one episode. I always think of this as a prelude to the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" Dominion war. Which is one of the reasons I never liked any of those episodes either. Star Fleet infiltrated and taken over by a few enemies, and no way to stop them. At least this episode they had multiple baddies and been at it for years. This is the beginning of what I disliked about later Star Trek, they decided to start a story, then ignore the ideas for several episodes and then bring it back. I found DSN, and voyager annoying, in that they would battle the enemy, get past them, then 5 episodes later Borg are back, or Dominion are back, with no change. I am hopeful for season 2 of Picard, but after watching the first episode, I skipped to just watching the "Ready Room" shows about the episodes, and I never liked Will Wheaton when he was on TNG, I still think it would have been better if he had been Q's son or something, and he had just been given to Beverly after Q accidentally cause the death of her husband, and their real child.

  • @targe762

Could have been one of the greatest episodes, but the acting, the fight scenes and the special effects make it worse than a bad Doctor Who episode. It's only worth watching for the hilarious awfulness, so an A for Hilariosity, an F for execution.

Terrible. Terrible episode. This one was never good...
Space bugs? really? The conspiracy is quickly over when the admiral tries to force Riker to eat the bugs.......
Also the stop motion bugs were really, really, really bad even for the late 80's...
The world is too new to be destroyed this early in the season.
Everything is wrong with this one, tone, timing and execution for TNG.

Everything’s about this whole episode was just dumb and silly and unconvincing. The special effects in particular were quite poorly done.
