I'm so excited for this project!!!. A bugeye was my first Subaru and it's my favorite design from the GD chassis. The project that I'm working on it's a GC coupe and I'm really excited to see how you paint the engine bay etc because I'm planning on doing the same. Thank you for sharing, I watch every single video that you post
While you have the suspension out, might be worth looking into replacing the bushings. On a car this old they are know to wear out and introduce slop in the handling. I have all polyurethane on my car and it handles great, but the NVH is noticeable. So consider factory rubber replacements depending on your usecase for the car. I will say the poly ones weren't too much for my '15 sti, maybe $600 to do the whole car. If your budget is tight, you can get some specific ones for ~$25 each, so might be worth looking into your options there. No clue what oem costs. Specifically I'd definitely do the swaybar bushings, and endlinks. They both have a lot of flex that prevent the sway bar from actually transferring load to the opposing wheel. Along the point of sway bars, my car has 24mm front and 19mm rear from the factory. Upgrading the rear to a 22 or 24mm to even them out is a night and day difference in the car's ability to rotate in a turn. Does a lot to help the understeer. Last recommendation, on your last video i mentioned moving the AOS drain line to the turbo return. Thanks for replying. If you don't already know, theres something called a "cylinder 4 cooling mod" that uses a coolant drain plug on the back of the block to rerout some coolant into the heatercore line. This addresses an issue unique to cylinder 4 where the coolant doesn't properly flow past the entirety of the cylinder wall, causing a hot spot that is a contributing factor in cylinder 4 ringland failure. The products available to fix this cost around $90, but really you just need a properly sized threaded fitting, some hose, and a T. You can buy these parts individually for like $15 and save some cash.
Yep, I replaced almost every bushing possible on my last build. I did use polyurethane and I personally prefer them and don't mind the increase in NVH. I've also installed Cylinder 4 cooling mods on all 4 WRXs I've owned. I didn't realize the rear sway bar can make such an improvement so thats great to know! These cars really do seem prone to some pretty serious understeer. Thanks for the info! Cheers!!
Quality video man. Picked up a 16 STI about a month ago so I've been going down the Subie rabbit hole. Glad to see your content pop up in my feed. Subscribed and liked. Keep the videos coming.
Yeah, I think people will definitely start to be more interested in proper OEM+ restorations on the GDs. I would love to do one of these on an 05 STi, as that is my favorite year.
The exhaust was ugly.. but it still flows, that is not a performance hindering thing. It's just ugly. :) That was not a 73.1mm, that is probably the external diameter! That's probably a 25mm spacer. Good job to to all that without help!
You’re totally right. Sometimes I say things when filming without thinking about what I’m actually saying 🤣🤣 73mm would be way thicker. Still tho, 25mm spacer on stock length wheel studs is kinda sketch IMO
Hey man, just cam across your channel and I'm diggin it. You mentioned you were in Northern Nevada. Just wondering where at? I live in Minden. Have a couple of STIs that we like to work on as well. Keep up the awesome content. Its great for us part time garage mechanics.
Its cool to see people here from the area! I live in Reno. Thanks man, I'm definitely going to keep cranking out the videos. Not stopping any time soon! What year are your STIs?
@@sleeper_motorsport I drive a 2019 Limited and my son has a 2014 Limited. Like I said man, keep up the good work. So many of the other channels I watch, the guys are from completely different areas. Nice to see someone local.
the genome comes with 2.5 inch stainless pipe he had to have it stepped up ti fit a 3" thats kind of what i had done to mine. but the metal is super good i had it flared and then welded much cleaner that way.
Yeah, I've actually rebuilt one of these with a re-seal kit. It did work well for a while, but I sold the car about six months later and so I don't really know how long it held up.
Something I’ve been doing with my STi is changing the power steering fluid on an annual basis. Not sure if this works but it certainly doesn’t hurt. Car is 3 years old with no leaks thus far.
the 02 is my first wrx and im still going down the rabbit hole 3 years later, but im learning a lot along the way. where do you get you chassis painted and how much does it cost? love from AZ
The subie rabbit hole is deep. I paint myself. There was some upfront cost with purchasing a gun etc. Paint supplies aren't cheap but I can paint an entire car for a fraction of what a shop would charge. Big learning curve as well. I still wouldn't consider myself good at it. I painted the entire car on my last project and it's on the channel if you're interested in seeing it.
I hope you used a degreaser or iron remover or other soap to help remove muck; otherwise you are just pushing it around....as far as the spacer, the hub circle is 73mm (EVO hub size) and you are suppose to use acorn cone/ball seat nuts to hold the spacer depending on what it requires (just like a wheel)....are you a Harbor Freight Inside Track member? If nothing else, this can be a good HF product use video/series. 6-Ton jack stands; for when 3-Ton won't cut it on a 2800lb car....
You’re correct the welding is shit. But at closer inspection it looks like it also reduced in size meaning from the collector it’s 3.0” then down to 2.5”? That STI genome can be saved, if you can take it to a real welding shop, have them chop off the collector, and all that other crap you could possibly find a welding shop that can do it for you properly, and still save the muffler. However, that’s something you want to save till the very last or close to the very last.
Yeah I looked at it again after reading your comment. Does look like they may have resized it and stepped it down with each weld. Not sure what I'll do with it yet, but taking it to a pro may be in the cards.
Came here to comment this, GeNome parts were oem options, and as such the genome exhaust was designed to mate up with the oem 2.5 inch exhaust, they welded a bunch of extra shit to it to mate it to a 3 inch mid pipe. my recommendation is to get just the genome muffler welded cleanly to a 3 inch axleback for a nice clean look.
Yeah, +1 on the Genome info. I have an '05 JDM WRX with one and the original owner's documentation confirms that it was bought and fitted at the supplying dealer. Loving the breakdown and build btw - can't wait to see the end result.🤘
I’m in for this bugeye rebuild 🔥 keep it up 🙌
Woah, thanks Tanner! Means a lot. Just don't roast me too hard, I'm not as skilled as you.
We all start somewhere, coming along nicely so far 🙌

dope project dude! Love seeing this whole thing getting gutted like that
Thank you! I'm not sure why Iike tearing apart old shit boxes so much 😆
I'm wondering when the GD chassis is going to start being restored more as opposed to rebuilt. GC's are already there it seems.
I plan on doing it to my 05 WRX once I can get myself a shop.

Thanks bro. It sure is but it’s a narrow body. So looking for ways to make it wide body
Judging by how loud it was and the state of the exhaust, they probably removed a resonator.
I was wondering that myself. Also may have been due to the fact that the axle back wasn't sealed to the mid pipe.
The exhaust was ugly.. but it still flows, that is not a performance hindering thing. It's just ugly. :)

Nice video, suscribed, glad to find more Subi content.
Can there ever be enough?
@@sleeper_motorsport No, never, wishing you much success, under followed right now.
The STI genome exhaust is actually very tame, deep and quiet. Your STI must be running a catless down pipe
It did have a catless down pipe and a massive exhaust leak between the axleback and catback.😆
May be picking one up because of this channel!
You absolutely should!
Loving the content mate. Keep doing what you’re doing
Thanks, much appreciated!!
Keep up the good job! Waiting for more episodes🤩

Thats cool. Seems like thats what was maybe tried here. Just low quality work
I just assume the steering rack will eventually leak with age. There are apparently re-build or re-seal kits for the racks.
Yeah, I've actually rebuilt one of these with a re-seal kit. It did work well for a while, but I sold the car about six months later and so I don't really know how long it held up.
Steering racks are a pain just replaced one on my 02 Bugeye.
They really are a pain...
Those r my plans for my 2010 subie wrx hatchback
Awesome man! The GR might be one the best looking cars.
When it comes to the steering racks on the Subaru NEVER NEVER use aftermarket racks. If you can always replace it with a factory one
Definitely not. I have used a refurbished OEM rack but it also leaked after a few months.

Is the steering rack oem ive never had an issue with leaking racks
Yeah it is. I've owned several of these GD era subies and they've all had leaky steering racks. I dunno...
Hi man,
I have a narrow garage myself too. How wide is your garage?
Mine is only 10.5 ft wall to wall. So yeah, you get pretty good at working in tight spaces.
Pls more 😊
