I love dad cars. They’re my favourite kind. The idea that a mundane looking car (99% of the population can’t differentiate a Type R from a regular civic) can absolutely rip off the road is very appealing.

I currently work at Acura and we get a lot of Civic Type R’s and Integra Type S, before ever driving the Type R ( FK8/FL5) I always thought it looked awesome. And after driving it it’s even more awesome. FL5 Type R is my affordable dream car it has an amazing transmission, it’s quick, and smiles for miles

Type S is for people that like cruising around town or going for scenic drives with comfortable seats and a suspension that isn’t gonna kill their back. Design wise they’re also less likely to get someone’s attention compared to a Type R with that big wing. Basically Type R is for hotbois, Type S is for older people or people who want comfort over "performance" In my opinion, it drives almost the same as a Type R except when in comfort mode. Comfort mode is pretty nice and makes it feel like i’m driving a base model Integra lol.

It's really barely watered down from the fl5, throttle house track tested both of these and got the same exact track time. Maybe due to bumpy tracks, and the acura deals with it better. But barely any performance is sacrificed, it is a little faster on the straights.

Here's a couple things with the newer Subaru WRXs. Insurance is likely to be down compared to a Type R/GR because they aren't "sports cars." The customizability also lends them more to a sleeper build that definitely fits the mold of "unassuming." Lastly, it's likely to be more inexpensive/attainable because dealer markups will destroy the Type R/GR. I almost forgot that because MSRP is down, you get more money for mods. I find that they would be the most practical for Dads.
Proud owner of a WRX STI. Love that thing so damn much, plus it’s great in the snow. So sad Subaru killed the STI but hopefully it comes back because it’s clear there’s a market for it.
GR Supra isn't exactly a dad car but it's a somewhat attainable (especially used) sportscar. Would love to own one someday. Hated it when it was revealed but now I love it.
I preferred its Z4 cousin when they both initially came out years ago, pre-COVID, but then I saw a Supra in the wild for the first time in late 2020, parked outside a nail salon on my work route at the time, and it looked so much nicer in person. I think a lot of people were disappointed that it didn't retain the same proportions as the original FT-1 concept, but I actually prefer the rounder, stubbier look of the production model. I feel pretty much the same about the Porsche Mission E/Taycan. Concept cars are cool and all, but sometimes a design actually benefits from the series of "compromises" necessary to take it from the concept stage to reality. It becomes more tangible somehow, more rooted in the real world. The original designer's vision for the car was hardly butchered just because it has door handles now.
Let me explain before all the hate, watch any review on any other luxury sports sedan (car whatever you want to can it) and there are problems in the driving (not the size because you buy a sports car for the driving not practicality) like sure the German cars are great but they are expensive and don’t have character (but fast, which is also a curse because to have fun at the limit your going way over the speed limit) tell mon person who would buy a M3 over a CT4 V bw for pure fun? And the genesis is really fun to even if you can’t get it in a manual still rwd it lets lose in the corners perfectly and is the same price as a Type R it’s not as fun hot hatch or as much space (again no size complains in a sports car (unless it’s the windows of a Camaro 😂) but much more daily livable. Not sure why I went on a rant but name me any other cars that are no problem sports luxury cars besides them two (not going to include any Italian cars because reliability isn’t the biggest factor but not to that level)
When i was shopping for my car I was on the fence between these "dad cars" and base trim sports cars. I came down on the side of the sports cars since the price was about the same, but I can definitely see the appeal of the dad car.

Horsepower does not directly equate to speed. To say that the car with the least horsepower by 20hp is slower isn't always true. There are plenty of factors other than that one number.

my first car is a ‘12 si, not nearly on the level of the type r and such but it’s been such a blast as a first car and i don’t think i would’ve picked anything else (other options were high mileage g37s and 35s, 350z, and v6 camaro) but im glad i chose the si. I love it.

As much as I'd enjoy having a manual, my girlfriend can't drive one so I stick with automatic. I hope and pray that Honda/Acura switch away from those damn CVTs. Would love to have a Type S with a DCT, but I'd settle for a torque converter auto as well. For now, I'm sticking with my Forte GT and looking to upgrade to an Elantra N once I get my money up.
