When asked about the likelihood of missing such a pivotal shot, Irving emphatically responded, “Absolutely not.” Irving drew from his extensive experience, explaining that his average engagement distance was under 300 yards. A lot of people don't realize the average deer hunter could have made that shot. Asking a military trained sniper what it would take for him to miss that shot is like asking what it would take to miss spell your own name.

As a lifelong deer hunter this is correct. However in my life did I ever worry about the deer shooting back at me.
And he’s not just military trained he is Army Ranger military trained. He would have to be blind, deaf and armless to miss that shot.

When I went through bootcamp in the Marines in 1987, we were shooting with iron sights from 200 meters out to 500 meters. That's 5 1/2 football fields and consistently impacted the target with decent groupings. At that distance the target is the size of your thumbnail when you're viewing it through your sights. That's the AVERAGE Marine rifleman. I still have my Marksmanship book from bootcamp that shows all of my target strikes. So, 150 yards for a basic Marine is child's play. A legit sniper can do it with their eyes closed.

We shoot a silhouette at 175 yards with hanguns every time we shoot. It isn't as difficult as most think. We do it with "target" oriented guns from 22lr to 50AE, not with like carry guns generally. Off hand 50% hit ratio is normal, but off the bench, 80-90% is normal. Examples of the guns we might normally use for this would be Ruger Mk series or Browning Buckmarks with 10" barrels (22lr) Taurus Raging Judge Magnum, Taurus Raging Hunter in 454 Casull and 460Mag. Desert Eagles in 357, 41, 44, 429, 50.
It just isn't as far as most people think.
