For anyone looking for Mizuno's. The Mizuno HMB is not meant to be a "Player's Distance Iron". For Mizuno that club is the JPX Hot Metal Pro. The HMB is an MP club built for consistent flight and distance with a slightly higher trajectory than the MMC model. They actually dialed back the distance of the HMB on center strikes to reduce hot spots and that occasional shot that flies 10 yards over the green.
Golfspy most wanted winner was Srixon z585 for 2018 and tested better than all the 2019 models too but they had to pick a different brand. P790 looks like a hockey stick- they are huge! Srixon is best all around and why I have them in my bag

Nice Video :) I am a Hcp 10 and got fitted for the PING i500 and I love them. I tested all the other irons and the ping made it for me! If you take out the last swing of the i500 the dispersion circle is by far (!!) the smallest and that is what made me choose those irons. Very easy to hit, super accurate, and with the Nippon Modus 3, by far the best feel. Keep up your nice work!
I recently went for a fitting and I focused exclusively on this category of iron. I'm a mid-handicapper with a 165 - 170 yard 7 Iron. I tried every iron in this video except the Cobra. After about 5 - 10 hits with each (stock steel shaft), I narrowed my focus to the I500 and P790 based on feel, consistency of flight, forgiveness and looks. After switching to a graphite shaft and after a number of additional hits with each, I decided on the P790s. It was the consistency of flight and forgiveness that sold me on the P790s. I received the new irons a couple weeks ago and have played 8 rounds with them. I absolutely love them.
You just about described my game exactly! I am looking to do the same thing. Did you gain distance over your previous 7 iron? Mine is 33deg today and it carries about 165. I am looking for more distance from my irons to tighten up the gaps at the top end of the bag.
Sean, congrats on the new sticks and thanks for the feedback on your experiences within this category. There's no question that P790 has been a home run for TaylorMade. Keep hitting 'em good!
I was hitting the Callaway XR's and my 7 Iron average distance was 163 yards (I have a SkyTrak set up in my house so can compare club performance in a lot of detail). I added 10 yards with the P790s, ball speed was up about 4 mph, smash factor up a couple points … but more important, I've straightened my flight and reduced dispersion. The gapping with the P790s is just about perfect at 14 - 16 yards between clubs. The feel of the P790 head combined with the Recoil graphite shaft is amazing.

id love to see how these all perform bent to a standard loft. then you can really compare! a juiced 30 degree 7 iron is obviously gonna go farther than a traditional lofted 7 iron around 33/34 degrees. unfortunately a lot of amateur golfers think they're hitting the ball longer when in fact you're basically hitting one more club with a "x" stamped on it lol

I’m a little confused. You said the Apex was the most consistent (after taking out the one outlier). But you didn’t take the i500 outlier off. You left all five shots with it. Taking out the one outlier with the i500 would’ve made it by far the most consistent club. Was this just oversight? Or am I missing something here?
Looks to me the i500 was completely ignored in this review. It seems the tightest dispersion and flight consistency. I tested the i500, the mizunos, p790 and the apex. The ping were far superior in distance, dispersion and forgiveness.
i500 was pretty consistent just a little right of center. For this test there were other clubs with smaller straighter circles and the results will always be player dependent. Glad to hear you had success with the i500's, it's going to be interesting to see when PING comes out with a new model - Thomas
For the record i started off with the kbs s taper light in the cobra forged tech and tried the amt black and s300 but dispersion was ultra tight with the kbs and felt much better on the strike. Fell in love with the cobra irons and had to order them.
The only problem with these sort of tests is the suggestion that 4 shots per club is anywhere near enough to do a decent survey. There is a lot of human error over such a small number and in truth at least 25-50 shots each would be needed to make any sort of conclusion, especially where dispersion is concerned.
Yeah smart ass. But he is obviously very low handicapper so we should suppose dispersion wouldn't be too different even with 50 balls. And nobody has energy and time to hit 50 balls each of 7 clubs consistently. And they considered other factors to come to the conclusion.
22:20 The right point is : "Don't categorize golfers by handicap because it depends on how you score". That's why "best iron for mid handicap" means nothing.
Agree. We like to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each player. Generally a player with a high handicap will need a gamer improvement iron but if they are a great ball striker but have a terrible short game there are exceptions which is why it can be hard to "categorize"
Haha but the Callaway Apex have least front-back dispersion, so it all depends what you want as the highest priority.... or was it the Indian and not the arrows :)
Great test, I'm interested in the Cobra Forged Tec, even though your dispersion wasn't great with the Cobras, I'm going to chalk that up to user error.
Thanks Mike. There's a lot to like about the new Forged Tec irons. Very forgiving on mis-hits and the ball really jumps off the face. If you didn't see the review we did just for those, you can find it here - th-cam.com/video/eEZ_xlM9AW0/w-d-xo.html. Thanks again for checking out the video!
Great review I’ve actually got my new cobra irons coming Tuesday from 2nd Swing, I’m not going to say user error on the cobras because I just sent back a set of T300’s that had the AMT shaft and I Have a set with S300, I’m sorry but the two are much different, much better dispersion with plain old S300, the AMT caused me to spray a little more. I had to fix a few typos
I’ll definitely report back hopefully got the right shaft in these I’m going graphite but sometimes I think why not go back to the dynamic gold S 300 that used to come in every other golf club back in the day and that’s all it really was, actually they were more but nobody focused on shafts back in the 80s so much except for a driver
Commented earlier on the players irons. I have tested most of these clubs extensively (except not the 2019 p790, nor cobra). Did not like most of them except used the z565 for several years before finally moving to the p760 (even though would like a little more distance but not at the sacrifice of especially left and right dispersion as well as north south - which I found was the case for the first gen p790). Much prefer a narrower look hence the p760s. Came close to thinking about the apex but found it less reliable than the p760. So has been a real dilemma to find something that has the looks and full forged feel of the players irons but gives me the reliability and distance of a players distance iron. So far not found it though am using only since a couple of months the pxg 0211.
Have you thought about a combo set of some sort? A Srixon Z 785/585 combo set might be a good choice, as they would blend well from a look and feel standpoint. Mizuno would also offer some great options in that regard in the MP-20 range where you could get the compact shape and limited offset that you want in the shorter irons and then maybe just a bit more help in the longer irons. Anyway, might be worth considering if you haven't already.
2nd Swing Golf Thanks. As I only use 6 iron up as hybrid and 5 wood really looking for a good looking forged feel club that will give me minimal dispersion but slightly better distance than the p760. None of the others I have tried seems to do the trick and generally have more offset than the p760. Although the shaft in the pxg (lz) seems to give me the stability unlike my graphite shafts in the p760 there are a bit clunky and don’t have the same feel of the p760. Will keep my eyes open. 🙏🏻
@@alysgolfstudio567 Gotcha. Based on what you've described, the Z 785 is worth looking at. Excellent shape, feels really good, and flat out delivers in terms of distance. Good luck in your search!
Just wanted to check with you about the honma tw747 p - don’t know them. How would they compare. Unfortunately the vx is not available in left hand. I ask only because I now game the driver which works very well for me and is th edgiest driver that I now have full confidence with and giving me a relatability and consistency I have never before had in a driver - even though previously I gamed the ts3 and currently game the ts2 5 wood and hybrid (not tried the honma of either of those specs too). I see the irons have minimal offset.
Great info, but I have one complaint. You forgot to take out the outlier on the left for the Ping i500, do that and the its right there with the 790 and apex for dispersion.
Hi Patrick, thank you for following our channel. We kept up the best 4 of 5 shots when taking out the outliers per club. You will notice there is a yellow dot flashing noticeably shorter than the other 4 yellow dots, it was the outlier eliminated from the data. You are correct there are 4 shots with the Ping i500 that were relatively close to each other but they were consistently way to the right, and if you know my typical ball flight with an iron I like to hit a little draw. The one shot you talk about to the left is actually the straightest of all shots with the i500 as it is the only yellow dot within the 5 yard grid. It was also struck solid. The other 4 shots with the i500 were consistently 10 yards right of the target. Yes dispersion would had been similar to the P790 and Apex if I had taken out the left shot but dispersion would be way right of the target.
@@2ndswing I would also love to see this review as I have 2 sets of honma right now. 717v and the 737v just never got round to selling the 717 because they seem a little heavier and still love them. But love the look of these new ones.

Does that sound like I'm making this up in my head or do yall think I need to try new technology clubs to play better
Hi Jonathan, thanks for your comment! Based on what you are saying, it does look like you could benefit from a new set of irons, and a set in this category. An iron in this category should provide more forgiveness and distance, depending on the lofts of your current set.
In this video we were only comparing irons that all fall into the players distance category, and the PING Blueprint most certainly does not. We are planning to do a similar video with current muscleback designs that are on the market, at which point the Blueprint would be tested against other irons in its category, such as the MP-20 Blade, P730, 620 MB, Apex MB, Z Forged, Cobra MB, etc. Thanks.
Nice review guys…I just purchased a HMB 6 iron from your web sight to do some indoor testing on my SkyTrak ....Great way to test different clubs prior to making a purchase on a whole set.🍻
Thanks Mark - we like where your head's at! How did you like the HMB and what kind of numbers were you seeing in your testing compared to what you were maybe expecting?
2nd Swing Golf ...It’s on Its way and I’m really excited to try it…I’ve tried the older P790 7 iron last winter and really liked it , it was really long but I did get an occasional flyer…I ended up going with the 919 HM set but always looking for the next one😉🍻
That iron probably fits as well but our PXG business is strictly on the used side and we were focusing this tests on irons that we stock as new options both online and in our stores. Thanks.
Is the king forged tec black a players iron or a game improvement iron? Is it a muscle back or a cavity back ? I have the black forged tec one but these new ones look interesting but I have no idea which iron is which. I’m new too this sport
The Forged Tec Black would probably fall into the players distance category as well, in that it offers a classic shape with built-in forgiveness and distance technologies. That iron is more or a true cavity back, while the new Forged Tec is a hollow-body design, which has become increasingly popular the last couple of years because it allows engineers to utilize a thinner clubface, lower CG position, and increased perimeter weighting. Thanks.
@@jadamane You definitely do, as your irons were designed to help you on off-center hits and also promote ball speed and launch, but your irons and the ones we tested in this video, including the new Forged Tec, also have a more traditional shape than what traditional game-improvements irons typically offer. Hope that makes sense!
Trust is so important in life, so one asks him/herself if this is an honest test, so many backhanders by big companies in promoting their product and not just on the golf side of sport! I would say to all golfers to do the test themselves as we all swing at different speeds/swings, so I would suggest you do the iron tests yourself as it costs you nothing too try them out, don't take the word of strangers on the net, get off your butt and do the test yourselves! Happy hunting
As a golf retailer, we're obviously going to test the irons that we stock and sell. With Hogan's direct to consumer business model, we don't have the option to carry their new stuff, nor do we have fitting components to test. Thanks.
If you go to the 16:00 mark of the video you'll see the one yellow light that is blinking. That was the shot that was removed from the i500 data, as you can also see by looking at the left side of the screen, which shows that #38 had been removed. The blinking dot is still visible because it was the last shot that the guys removed. Thomas also discusses why he removed that particular shot with the i500 in his response to Patrick Kohlman. Thanks.

The PXG Gen3 0311XP is the absolute best players iron on the planet!
@@thomascampbellgolf thanks for replying and the great info. Solid content.
Can you or have you tested the Honma TW-X?
We haven't yet but we'll add your request to our list. Thanks.
@@2ndswing I would also love to see this review as I have 2 sets of honma right now. 717v and the 737v just never got round to selling the 717 because they seem a little heavier and still love them. But love the look of these new ones.
I have ta 5 cleveland irons there 20 years old just about an I feel like I can only get so good with these irons ( like stopping me from getting better) I shot mid 80s years ago an finally broke 80 last week .
How could you leave out the Ping Blueprint? It's dispersion is true quality and would stand up to any of these.
@@marklogan646 Gotcha. Let us know what you think after you get it and have some time with it. Thanks!
Just found your video's, they're very good and informative
Thanks
Thanks Martin - glad you found and we appreciate the kind words!
Thanks Martin, as they say, it’s better late than never, welcome!
what about the pxg 0211, or does that iron not fit into this category?
That iron probably fits as well but our PXG business is strictly on the used side and we were focusing this tests on irons that we stock as new options both online and in our stores. Thanks.
Do Cobra do a one length version with these irons?
Yes, Cobra does offer the Forged Tec in One Length.
Holy shit my 7 iron is 35* no wonder it only goes 175!
175 yard 7 irons isn’t anything to be upset about 🤣
Great video thx for the videos
Thanks.
2nd Swing Golf ok I thought I had a gamers improvement club-Cavity back club. I like them tho and do good with them.
2nd Swing Golf u seen my golf page already?
Trust is so important in life, so one asks him/herself if this is an honest test, so many backhanders by big companies in promoting their product and not just on the golf side of sport! I would say to all golfers to do the test themselves as we all swing at different speeds/swings, so I would suggest you do the iron tests yourself as it costs you nothing too try them out, don't take the word of strangers on the net, get off your butt and do the test yourselves! Happy hunting
No Hogan irons? What’s up with that since they’ve been so highly reviewed?
As a golf retailer, we're obviously going to test the irons that we stock and sell. With Hogan's direct to consumer business model, we don't have the option to carry their new stuff, nor do we have fitting components to test. Thanks.
Why does the i500 have 5 shots when all the other have 4. Not fair for ping
Thanks.
A 190 yd. plus 7 iron carry? Who does that? Nobody I know. Truly humbled on this end
dogs'drooltoo 91 mph swing speed and a 1.4+ smash factor will do that 😁
@@darrenmiller1981 i just tested the MP 20mb and MMC im hitting the MMC around 185-92 carry with a 94.5 avg club speed and a top out of 104mph. i suck a putting tho.. lol the MB i am around 175-178
Wow...I can only dream. I’m 140 yds tops with a 7 iron (TaylorMade SpeedBlades). It’d be so much fun to be able to move a club that fast. Getting old and creaky sucks!
Interesting, but why keep talking on all the possibilities and details ? Better to finish with a clear Top 3 recommendation at the end ! We know it is personal anyway....

Hogan Ptx pro?
With Hogan's direct to consumer business model, we just won't have any of their new stuff to test in videos like this. Thanks.
