I'm a 2 hcper and last year, after 10 years of playing, I decided to really invest into my golf for the first time. I spent money from my summer jobs and put them into my first fitting. After fitting, those guys made and sold me ,,my ideal set of new irons" for lot of money. But after 3-4 months of playing them, I just started to feel uncomfortable w them.. they made me shorter, less consistent and also two shafts I broke or damaged just w swinging. I did feel like Lord Voldemord w the Elder Wand. They were amazing clubs, but just didnt listened to me. So after 6 months after fitting I sold them and after that I bought for a 300 dollars a second hand Mizuno JPX 850 forged.. 8 years old, little bit scratched.. but now I'm playing the best golf ever, shooting around par every round and feel so much confidence w my game and w my irons.
So I have a very best proof, that second hand clubs could be the best option for you! 😍Have a nice game!

Finally got fitted for my first set of irons - TM P790s - 5I-AW. The right length, stiffness, weight of shaft, and heads have made a world of difference to my ball striking…I can consistently square them up, get more out of a mis-hit, and have discovered a nice little draw to my ball flight. Getting a fitting is game-changing!

I just bought a brand new set of Wilson D9 Forged, 5-GW for $500. They look and feel amazing. Worth every penny and so much more affordable than buying a new set of the big brands. I couldn't be happier.

Exactly! I'm a mid-handicaper, but I bought a set of forged Mizunos JPX 921 SEL because I like how they look and feel and they are classic lofts. Since I have good clubhead speed, all the more "helping" irons were going way too far and creating a huge gap at under 140 yds for me. I really do enjoy the feedback of the more bladed irons and accept the loss in performance when I miss hit them. Makes the pure shots that more rewarding :)

The most memorable iron shots I have ever hit (the shots we all have in our memory bank) have been with older Mizzy MP69 Blades. Spot on flushed, perfect ball flight and landed within feet of the pitch mark while being directly on the yardage. The shots that keep us all coming back. While they awesome to play, colder mornings during fall golf season here in Calgary (5-9 degrees C) do not like thin blade strikes. LOL. I've blended with MP69 8-9 and MP53 CB 4-7. Perfect blend for me.

I have a set of Mizuno’s as well as TailorMade. You’re absolutely right they’re both remarkable irons however, the mistake I had to have corrected was the shaft that went in the iron without the engine of the head just hangs on so make sure you get the right shaft to go with these irons

Moving to a muscle backed iron improved my game. Mostly from the extra practice I had to put in, and the motivational boost I got from wanting to master something that was a bit more difficult. Not that I'll ever be a master of the irons, ha ha, but the confidence that they inspire when addressing the ball for a cut or fade as opposed to SGI shovels I've used previously.... Totally worth it. Dropped my HC from 20 to 8 in two seasons of working my butt off. Blade irons with corded grips and no glove is a great teaching tool. Old Titleist 695mb's in my bag, and no notions of swapping them out any time soon.

By pure chance Pete I’ve picked up my 5-GW ZX4’s today. My first set of fitted irons. I’d love to see you do a review on them. Something else I’d like to see which not many content creators seem to have covered is forgiving irons for those with faster swing speeds that aren’t absolute rocket ships. I’ve been playing 2 years, have decent speed but have the inconsistency of a relatively new golfer. At the moment I’m considering after a few rounds of testing of maybe having the clubs de-lofted a little. Not every mid-high handicapper swings a 7 iron at 70-80mph but there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of equipment aimed at these. Especially as more younger people get into the game swing speeds will in general go up

Agree with it all, except perhaps point #7, Pete. If the score is your only focus, then yes, I agree. But if the score is secondary to enjoying your golf, or perhaps just a by-product of it, then buying irons that you aspire to play is perfectly OK! I play clubs I shouldn't be playing (skill-wise), but I enjoy my golf more because I'm using them. A shot, or two or three, extra on the score/handicap isn't as important to me as loving the clubs I'm using.

I'd go looking for these if you're in the market for a modern set of forged irons on the cheap, which are not by any means a cheap feeling iron quite the opposite. I took a leap of faith and got away from game improving irons. I bought the Takomo 101t's. Absolutely no regrets. Theyre harder to hit but my striking is beginning to improve and my front to back dispersion is tighter

I bought some Macgregor's from the thrift store. For $2. Just to mess around with bevause they were so cheap. Fell in love with them all the way around the board and have turned into me set. If it has looks, feel and give you the confidence you need over the ball; you may habe found your irons.

Genuine question but its a piece of metal on a stick, does it actually really matter? I can understand the shafts making more of a difference from swing speeds but the metal is briefly hitting the ball in a set direction so how much of a difference can it really make?

I don’t play them, but I would steer anyone I know who was looking for a great value towards the Maltby clubs from The Golfworks. Especially if you are near central Ohio and can go there for the fitting too. I have not hit the newer TE+ which is their most traditional head, but the TS1 IM, TS4, and definitely the TS3 are fantastic for what they cost. I think Maltby’s have always been ok and a good option to save some money, but this current generation is truly unreal and I think they finally have the looks to match the play, which they certainly did not before.
