- The Zero Division were the all-powerful set of captains tasked with defending the Soul Palace and the Soul King himself. But when they fell in battle to Yhwach's Schutzstaffel, many fans were left incredibly disappointed at a lack of satisfying resolution to so many years of anticipation. So, in a nearly hour-long video, let's take a look at these characters and the journey both they, and we as fans, went through to reach this point.

Well not exactly remember they travel to the human world too. So they can be anywhere on the globe or hueco mundo etc
"location" might not mean a "physical place" but the "soul" in which the asuchi binds itself too, that being a shinigami "soul". He "Knows" who all the shinigami are, where they are, and who the asuchi is.
That doesn’t even make any sense. Like where in the soul society? It’s a big ass place.
I feel like if they all had a fight on the level of Ichibe's, nobody would've been disappointed with them for the most part. Really hope the anime expands on them.
Yea each one could have had their own fight against an elite quincy and i wouldn't have minded if they lost there due to hashwalth interfering or whatsoever.
If they were to get the fight that is only lost when some magical asspull is performed such as in the fight with ichibei and bach, that would have even put the threat of the sternritter into a new perspective by establishing the fact that they are willing to sacrifice the others through aushwalen to power up the fighting and that's why they lose. Them getting off screened was just..
Sad.
They didn't even use Volstandig to defeat them.

Then Kubo has to write even more abilities for when they face the captains or else it would be redundant. That’s just not practical. The captains don’t shine if the Zero Squad doesn’t get stomped.
The thing I'm most disappointed by is the Soul King himself.

Thank you that too and in one chapter during the final arc he’s seen floating with full body and the next he’s dismembered I’m like wtf .

As for the zero division not caring about the destruction of the soul society. I always imagined it was because as long as the soul king was safe the cycle would continue regardless. Iike if yawach never planned to go to the soul king then they wouldn't have even intervened and waiting for soul society to rebuild on its own
I think that's their mind set in general even when ywach became the soul king if you read the novel you know what I wanted to write next . But I'm not cause for obvious reasons

I would imagine for would let earth die If it protected the universe. Couldn’t imagine individual lives would matter at those stakes.

@@terrarionaqu5262 Every anime made makes changes from the manga, that's why anime is never considered canon. And plenty of series go quite far off the source material, what you're talking about is a make believe assumption you've gathered from internet message boards. The business is making the anime as entertaining as possible so people will want to view it, and people generally regard the ending of bleach to be pretty rushed and bad, if the anime improves on that they'll build a huge amount of hype, which means more people watching, which means more money. Of course, that's only a possibility.
Yeah, off screening them was ridiculous, especially because they never showed up again.
I don’t care if it’s filler when the anime returns if they add the actual fights in the anime so we could see the zero division in all of their glory.
I'm really hoping they extend it since Kubo rushed so much at the end.

I think filler seasons should be good. There's a lot of content that can played upon from the recent adds into the canon material. A season about the Zero Division, their earlier lives and moments to the point they reached the level they are now would be exciting to see. Hopefully when the show comes back to, a lot of the loose ends are tied off and Kubo can do things more for the Blood War compared to the books due to multiple obstacles.
Zero Squad: no hype.

I think Senjumaru shoulda had more badass moments. She seemed like the smartest one of the bunch and had abilities and speed to match her intelligence.
Senjumaru easily has the best design too in my opinion.
Even I with some moments of dedication and thinking could create nice powers for her shikai and bankai. So much potencial wasted.

I actually really loved that the royal guards showed a lack of care for the death of Yamamoto or anything that really happened to the soul society. Their apathy(if we can call it that) pertaining the destruction of Soul Society ties into the fact that they pledged allegiance to the Soul King now and so the soul society’s affair have nothing to do with them. I really liked that about that. Senjumaru, I would say was the one, at first, who I thought the Royal Guard would be like. Very indifferent to the Soul Society’s affairs. She reminded me of Soi Fon and she seemed like she couldn’t care less for the captains at all. She had the attitude that I was hoping the zero division would have.
interestingly enough, after reading CFYOW, there are subtle hints of the zero division (save for Itchibe) seemingly starting to care more about the well being of itchigo and the S.S. Nimaiya talks to itchibe about something getting stolen and he looks pissed because of how destructive it could be, but Itchibe shrugs it off and says that they're job is to protect the Soul king and to not interfere in the S.S. I can kind of see a sort of civil war starting to form with the members of the zero division siding more with the soul society and some members of the soul society siding with Itchibe and wanting to protect the soul king.
@@sp5ism I haven’t read CFYOW but Nimaiya could have possibly been upset over the fact that Tokinada broke into palace and took something but I do understand that some of the royal guards started to fancy Ichigo since they met and ultimately gained respect for him. Civil war though? Nah. They’d be dead if it wasn’t for Ichibei and they know it
It kinda makes sense since there only purpose is to protect the soul king, the existence who keeps everything intact (the 3 worlds, souls, cycle of life) so as long you don't step foot in the soul palace you're no threat to them. (aizen is the example, they didn't step in because aizen never managed to infiltrate soul palace)

I wish there'd been some kind of challenge to protecting the Soul King besides the Quincies, some reason all five of them have to stay up there at all times. Like maybe the Soul King's power runs wild sometimes like it did after he died, and it does freaky stuff and tries to escape the Palace until it's contained. Otherwise it seems like they've just been loafing around for thousands of years.
You are a true fan of Bleach when you feel that level of disappointment on how the last arc was written. It could have been a very great arc.
I saw a lot of info saying that Kubo was rushed to finish the last arc towards the end and I think that’s where a lot of these long drawn out chapters followed by rushed and super quick fights comes from. I hope that he does it a little different in the anime. Maybe he can make a few changes to show us more about how crazy strong the zero division really was.
Yeah I recall that too. I think he also had health issues at some point. I could be mistaken with the latter

Kubo was having health issues and Jump was trying to make sure the manga has some closing in case he did die.
I loved the potential of the zero division. Hated how they were just brushed aside after so much hype. I would have preferred a situation where they lost to yhwach but yet still helped defend soul society by backing up the gotei somehow
They should have just had actual lengthy fair fights against the Schutzstaffel where they still lose anyway.

Schutzstaffel vs Zero division was the moment that everybody knew kubo was just ready to end the story by all means.

Zero Division protects the whole Bleachverse by keeping the linchpin (Soul King) intact.
Shinigamis are important but are mere soldiers who are replaceable.
They failed at that and by allowing the other shinigami to fall they left themselves open to invasion.

I really like how Oetsu came in and one shot the quinces, it proved his power. However, I totally agree that the events that followed and the flip-flop battles were disappointing. Another great vid as always Tommo!

I groaned out loud when I first read that the Sternritters just got revived and powered-up. I damn near stopped reading when Nimaiya just gets 2 shotted immediately after. Literally see Kirini's Shikai and like next chapter everyone's on the floor bleeding out or dead. I get that Shounen Jump was pressing Kubo for time but holy shit what a bunch of non-characters. Nimaiya and Ichibei got some hints of a character with how they interacted with Ichigo and Ichibei respectively but the other 3? "Oh they used to do X in Soul Society and knew Y characters" - that's literally it.
I shouted in the internet cafe and left without paying.

I actually like the fact that all the characters in 0 division had aloof personalities and such. It kind of shows how distant they are from everyone else. I assume they know what is going on, but the fact that they did not feel the need to appear till then shows they believe that their powers or time is too valuable to be interfering, even during the Aizen fight. It basically shows that even though they have contributed to the Soul Society, their position and ego make them somewhat ignorant of the situation.
I can believe the statement of them being more powerful than the goetei, oetsu took care of the sternritter really quickly before Juha had to take back the power from all the other sternricher. Yamas power was insane, his bankia removed wanted from sereitei, Ichibei had the ability to take all the darkness from the world which insane, and remove a soul from the soul cycle.
Juha was basically the son of the soul king and why he wouldnt be defeated so easily this time

The damn cripple that is the Soul Kings whole reason for existing is to maintain that balance as well.
@@UnifiedEntity the soul king can recreate worlds, that's more important than saving the planes themselves. A new soul society/HM,etc can be replaced by something new, but the king himself is more important than that so his protection is higher than trying to save SS.
@@dinolover If so were easily true, there wouldn't have been a need to exterminate the Quincy. There wouldn't be a need for cleansing of souls and cycles of death and rebirth being maintained.
I feel my issue/disappointment with them is were were told how amazing they were and never really shown. There was so much hype leading up to them for us to find out they were just Captains that were given a promotion for inventing something. We were told those 5 were as strong as the whole Gotei 13. Literally all of the Gotei 13 combined. Every Grunt. Every Captain. That these people were that damn powerful. Then we got people that were basically just Captains for the most part that were offscreen killed. It isnt that what they invented wasnt impressive. One of them literally invented zanpakutos. It just felt we were told there is this group of people that had so much power it could hold off entire countries army… and find out that one of the people in Question was Henry Ford. Then go “Well.. he invented the Assembly Line….”
I always felt kubo was trying to portray that they got surpass by the captains. When was the last time the zero division was tested. Meanwhile the captains was force to grow dealing with global threats.
Well the promotion for the Zero Division wasnt only bout contributing to somethin important in Soul Society History or Gotei, all 5 Members did display strong abilities and powers, hell Oetsu single handly defeated Yhwach elite guard if it werent for hims reviving and buffing their power that would have been the end of it. Ichibe was even close in defeating Yhwach. we just didnt see much of there full actual fight due to Tite Kubo being rushed to finish the manga.
Going back to the promotion system it not just bout contributing to something important the candidates have to be exceptionaly strong like Kuruyashiki the 7th Kenpachi he was asked to be a member due to him being insanely powerful and for having the most dangerous Bankai of the whole Gotei History that he was extemely forbidden from even activating within Soul Society for it can wipe out Soul Society in and instant, but Kuruyashiki declined the offer cause he didnt view himself as protector, also he was shortly defeated by his Kenpachi succesor Soya Azashiro who also caught the attention of the Zero Division but this time as a threat, that they themselves had to directly intervene to stop him.
All in all being a member of the Zero Division requires a specific set of abilities. They are either exceptionaly strong or have created something unique that contributes to the history of Gotei or both.
Senjumaru looks so cool, only if she didnt get smacked around by the sternritters😔

The best thing about getting promoted to the Zero Division isn't about your contribution being recognized or you being a freaking strong character.
It is the fact that you become immortal.
When souls die, they transform into reishi or spirit particles that make up the Soul Society. But if one of the Zero Division dies, they don't become spirit particles. They just wait for them to get respawn or resurrected. They're not that strong (except for Osho or Nimaya) but they're fucking immortal.
I guess this is because of the fact that there must always be guards to the Soul King.
According to manga, when soul dies it ressurect as newborn in real world.

11:20 jokes on Kirinji, the Zero squad failed to protect the Soul Palace faster than the Shinigami did to protect the Seireitei, and defeated he enemy for them.
Facts. I one point reading this arc I was thinking why is Aizen not fighting he can do better than this, free Aizen and we will suffer the consequences afterwards.
@@justinalexander1056 It's implied they wouldn't be able to reseal Aizen if he was freed completely. He was able to move after releasing only 3 of many seals.

In the manga, he comes back when ichigo says his name. So I’m guessing that’s how he did it.
If you could try to put up images of the characters when you talk about them, that would help a lot. I don't really remember names very well, so you throwing names out there kind of throws me off
which further demonstrates the problem if this arc, I know the names of all the shinigamis by heart because of how well they were developed before, I kinda remember some arrancar, but I don't remember any of the quincy nor any character introduced on the final arc

@@br5073 I do remember Ass Nodt, (is that right?) cause his power was cool and we get to see Rukia's bankai. The scenes with Aizen and Kyouraku were top, but I hoped more of the final battle, The cero squad was very disappointing.

I always took that to also imply that he was also originally the first captain of Squad 4

I remember thinking Kirinji was going to have some ability that put him and his opponent into a 1v1 fist fight, where no other powers worked, it just came down to who dropped first. Like a knife edge death match from YYH lol.

Sounds a lot like Achilles power in Fate/Grand Order, it throws both him and an opponent into a fistfight to the death with no other powers

I had to go back to rewatch this to remember how unpalatable the fight was compared to the redemption the anime gave us.
Oetsu managing to take out Gerard felt especially bad given how absolutely impossible of a task that proved to be later.
It made sense coz the zero division are stronger than the gotei 13

@@cameronjones9092 I imagine that it is because "The Miracle" is based on the doubts and fears of Gerard's opponents. If they have any hesitation at all when fighting him, he just becomes essentially unstoppable. But Nimaiya had no such doubts-he *knew* Sayafushi was going to kill Gerard. His convictions are what didn't allow The Miracle to activate.

The Zero Division that was imagined would be like Yamamoto, Aizen, Byakuya, Zaraki, Unohana(the kenpachi one of TYBW) :D

Hey guys I'm actually from 5 years in the future. I just came back to curve everyones expectations on the return of the bleach anime because the Zero division still got off screened in the anime. Dont worry though because Pepe got 14 episodes for his fight and 12 episodes for a flash back on his back story. Enjoy

The biggest problem with the Zero Division is that they were put up against the most OP villain in Shounen history.

The Royal Guards were actually mentioned by Rukia in the first arc in the fight against the first Menos Grande

I agree with everything you’ve said. You pretty much nailed most of our feelings on the final arc in this regard. I honestly hope in the anime they expand on these missed opportunities. Label it filler or whatever, but give us what we wanna see.

Senjimaru was the one zero division member I seen and was satisfied, in hindsight I enjoyed the zero division and I'd love for the next light novel to give us an insight into the zero division and the founding gotei. Love your videos Tommo, helps me keep hype for the anime. Keep it up! 🔥
what i want to see the most of is the original captains. Hopefully the anime shows them

I agree. Senjumaru embodies what a royal guard was suppose to be in my mind. Ichibei only became a proper portrayal of it when he got serious in the fight with Yhwach.

I'm actually a big fan of Kubos lack of adding backgrounds to his panels. Bleach is probably the only manga I've actually read and when I tried to read others, I could barely make out what was going on b/c of the super messy and busy backgrounds.
I honestly feel like they were unneeded. It felt like this arc retcon'd more than it did expanded everything. You know. And not every mystery needs to be known to readers. Sometimes, the mystery is the best part.
And you need to remember, these guys came out in an arc that most of the readers at the time never felt needed to exist. Just the arc alone was controversial.
My impression when Kubo showed Ooetsu killing off the schutzstaffel quickly was that this zero squad doesn't waste time to do what needs to be done to eliminate the threat as swiftly as possible with no wasted movements. No name asking, no grandstanding or ego size measuring, and all that, which seemed more realistic to me. That was actually pretty rare in Bleach as a whole so is was a nice change of pace in my opinion.
Yeah that was pretty sick. When they got revived and basically returned the favor to the royal guard I enjoyed that as well. Seems like they underestimated them and Ywach and paid for it.
I agree with sentiment, but execution of it was lacking.
It would be much better if people who died there were victims of Holy Selection. We knew them already, we know how strong they are, and there would be no need to resurrect them.
I see what you mean but the problem is it doesn’t make sense these characters could be killed with one hit like that. Especially with what we see later in the arc with characters such as Gerard and Lille Barro having god-like abilities and are basically not killable. How did Gerard die when his shrift is the miracle?
@km2460 eotsu himself said that his blade was an instant kill and is so dangerous no sheeth could hold it so he has it suspended.
I believe the reason behind their bizarre introduction was an attempt at the “Yoda/juvenile master trope. We’ve seen it utilised heavily in media, but particularly in anime/manga, the notion of a god like being, master, leader nearly always being played for laughs. King Kai and Zeno in DBZ, Jiraiya in naruto. I don’t think it landed well because there wasn’t ambiguity. With yoda, Jiraiya and other characters we’re not immediately aware of who we’re looking at. Even in something like the mask of zoro while not played for comedy, the character isn’t aware the humble old man is zoro. Here it’s very conspicuous that the highest ranked shinigami in the mythos are behaving like tools. We’ve seen this convention used better within bleach with both isshin and urahara being some of the strongest characters who appeared little more than comic relief initially. I know we likely assumed they could throw down, but did anyone expect Shikai/base isshin to have a better showing than the entire gotei did, likewise urahara sealing Aizen?
If the zero division had either finished the assault on the seireirei, for example, one of them was in the rukongai looking like a civilian and they’d suddenly just one shot a bazz-b level opponent there would be intrigue.
Or if their introduction had been more ostentatious. Instead it was pitched in the middle. It wasn’t a bombastic introduction, but it wasn’t understated and leading us to question who they are. It was this awkward middle ground.
Love your approach to bleach topics, I generally didn't like to watch videos or discuss bleach for a variety of reasons but mostly the copy pasted opions or over used topics. Glad you want to make videos that are different than your peers videos.
As i fan, I'm happy that they gave us this final arc. But as a realist , it was forced because of Kubo's medical condition.
So we're glorifying the smallest good pieces, when overall it was highly disappointing.
i only just read bleach over the past year, and i ended up thinking they were all really unique and cool, with insane amounts of skill to be admired. Just watching ichigo get trained showed the immense knowledge they have, and i really felt there was so much to learn about them considering they are some of the longest living shinigami, if not THE longest living shinigami.
I really thought Mayuri should have become part of the zero division for creating "perfect" human replicas, which would have annoyed the shit out of him
He didn't though and it depends what qualities they value. Urahara beat him in creating life with mod souls.
I think he would deserve it due to his bankai modification techniques though.

the zero division shouldve been the severed limbs of the soul king and mimihagi was the one who "escaped" the tyranny of the soul reapers and lived in rukongai, then using ukitake as his sacrifice. i think it would've played into the whole story way better

What kudo missed on the fight was the zero division’s Bankai, that was what bleach was about, the fight becoming hard just to level things with their Bankai

They just didn't do much. I agreed with Kirenji when he said it was the Gotei's job was to protect the soul society, but it's shocking they didn't do more to help considering they helped Rukia, Renji, Byakuya and Ichigo power up. It only a few days for all of them to drastically power up via the Zero divisions' methods so why no one else?
I like the route they went for them, with them being unrestrained in personality they all are. Like when you get this strong and are elevated to that level you can the most extreme version of yourself, be it introverted or outgoing they can just be themselves

The zero division could have been formed mainly by the 5 noble ancesters.
Senjumaru creating the Oken/concept of the oken.
Kirinji being the creator of Kaido (sorta plausible in canon actually since he taught Unohana Kaido)
Having everyone have a unique Zanpakuto WITH A NAME. Senjumarus needles, the spoon the paddle the hammer that forges etc.
Just a note, I feel the zero squad ties into actual japan history/ culture:
Cuisine
Hot springs/homeopathic medicine
Clothing
Caligraphy
Weaponry.
The probelm wasnt that they were highly regarded for creations but tha they were established as supposedly stronger than gotei 13.

Very good insight! Actually this convinced me that Tite Kubo really did have some problems going on while writing the ending part of Bleach. I've read and watched some videos regarding his situation while making this part of Bleach. I really expected something more regarding the zero division which notorious for being powerful just to be trashed by Juhabach's men. I really expected more.
Kirio didn’t really do much in terms of combat so she’s the most disappointing for me. The rest had interesting little bouts. Ichibei being the only one getting an all out fight.
I don’t understand why Kubo couldn’t incorporate them in the final fights with the Elite Guard (except the Mayuri/Pernida fight. That one was great). But it was such a waste of building up the Zero Division if the usual suspects (Toshiro, Kenpachi, Kyoraku, etc) would eventually take the stage yet again.
Definitely agree that Shutara has the best design by far though.

something i like about the zero division is that every one of them gets a moment, some more than others, but they all do something
I've got to say, that I think if Kubo had tried to live up to people's expectations of the 0 division, there's no way he could have made people happy, so by going in the opposite direction, somewhat disregarded the sheer amount of hype and expectation, leading to much better character development and revelation later on.

I really liked their character design and (on the First arrival) goofy attitude of the zero squad.They gave me Urahara vibe (That there is another face of the coin).Kubo did a great job for the Royal Guard and their defeat by the Quincy elite was Kubo's way to establish the threat level. Only a more fleshed out fight was needed for the Zero Squad.
I think this arc was pretty good but if Shonen hadn't rushed Kubo when he was still ill/still recovering. If he had the time, this arc would have been the top of top tier chapters!
I hope somehow they make the anime arc great by making all the fights greatly animated.
The zero division was also hinted at in episode 125 or 126 when the Head Captain was speaking with Hitsugaya and Matsumodo about Aizens plan to destroy the soul king palace
It was episode 125 and Yamamoto directly stated that the Soul King has his own private security force called the Royal Security Guards.
Technically that was the first time Squad Zero was mentioned but without calling them Squad Zero.

I believe where Kubo wanted to take the Zero Squad was they were at one point more powerful than the Gotei but due to Ichigo and Aizen the Gotei had to get stronger through multiple series of battles throughout bleach while the zero squad basically sat around twiddling there thumbs for a very long time without being battle tested. I believe Kubo wanted to portray that but got rushed

Maybe I'm just misremembering the circumstances in which it's claimed that the Royal Guard is stronger than the combined Gotei 13, but with Yamamoto dead, Kenpachi's true strength locked away, Ukitake terminally ill, and Unohana having not fought in centuries, it doesn't seem like that ridiculous a claim. The level of power creep in the final arc is ridiculous even by the standards of Bleach, so it wouldn't surprise me for it to be completely true in the beginning and laughable at the end. If you include Yamamoto it becomes a little more dubious, but even then we only see them against enemies that so far outclass the Gotei 13 that comparison is pointless.

One of the biggest missed opportunities is that we never got an interaction between Hikifune and Hiyori especially after Turn Back the Pendulum has that she was Hiyori’s former captain whom she looked up to as a mother figure to the degree that when Urahara became captain, she wasn’t happy about him replacing her

@@varimatra2088 but the only reason why that is is because his Zanpakutou literally has the One-Hit mechanic. If Aizen manages to not get hit by the first strike and release, then they are in deep shit. And he would be able to do that because he is literally as powerful as a Shinigami can be

I wouldn't say I was disappointed by the 0 division. It is more so a trope in anime the extremely powerful and hyped characters will have gimmicks, which I am not a fan of. I also think with the 0 division, the gimmicks were turned up to an 11. I don't mind some characters with gimmicks but when you are dealing with a group of people that are this bad ass / hyped up and they all have gimmicks it kind of ruins the image I had of the group (at least for me anyways).
I wouldn't say Ichibei had a gimmick he was extremely strong I'd say probably top 5 strongest easily.
Interesting points about the Soifon vs. Kirinji argument. I'm personally more inclined to sympathize with Soifon's perspective, since not only did the Zero Guard not help out, but they also don't fully know who they're dealing with. When Yhwach and his elites face the Royal Guard, it goes to show that they might not have done any better.
I do believe the royal guards knew who they were dealing with. I’m sure they were all aware of the battle going on and what exactly happened but because that’s not their territory, they did not step in. They are not obligated to help out the gotei 13 with gotei 13 problems. They protect the Soul King not Soul Society.

I've always thought that by "powerful" Kubo meant in a political, or militaristic way. Not simply combat power level. Simply they were up in the ranks. It's always about ranks, and seats. Also because they are figures. They are not supposed to fight, that's why gotei is there in the first place. They are istitutional figures.
(But yes, i was disappointed too. )
Sometimes I kind of wonder if instead of saying that they were so powerful, Kubo should've just said they were like specifically talented or something. Because many of the zero squad has very interesting and different abilities, they could be moved up to protect the soul king or live in palace due to their contributions or abilities, but maybe not their strength. It may have helped some of the issues, but there's still plenty of other problems overall as well.

The thing to always keep in mind with the final arc is that Kubo was given a firm deadline to finish the story, a deadline too short to fully flesh out every fight, and every character's new abilities. I mean, we get a bombardment of Bankai's, for basically EVERY character that never used it before. JUST because fans REALLY wanted to see them. Not necessarily cause the story needed them. Like, why didn't the Captain Commander just use Bankai against Aizen back in the earlier arc? Why didn't Aizen just murder literally every Gotei 13 as he left Soul Society the first time? He EASILY could have.
The thing I take away from this final arc, is that Kubo could've easily done another 100 chapters and given us big fights, fully explained powers, given proper foreshadowing, etc. But he didn't have the time anymore. I mean, can you imagine if he just didn't do ANYTHING with 0 Division? Cause that was the only other option for him. Either rush, and throw something together, or just put a line that says "Ywach has killed the 0 division" and not even show them to us.
I wonder/hope the anime is going to actually expand on that arc and include entirely new scenes, fights, and explanations, that Kubo couldn't fit in.
I think the reason why Kubo skipped the battle of Zero Division is so it would give the Elite Sternirintter more hype and mystery.
Think about it....if any of the Elites transformed, it's not too far-fetchdd to believe they would win with all their hax abilities.
