      Thanks for the kind words man. I am lucky in the fact that I get to spend all day working with one of my best friends. Even more so considering "motorcycles" are our "work"!!

    Good review and video! I just got a 2019 Z900, I like the Z900 so much! It’s comfortable, light, and powerful and fast!

    No "sleeving" going on in modern aluminum engines. Aluminum alloy walls with high tech extremely hard and durable coatings. This 948cc lump has a custom head, cams, valves, pistons, lightened crank and flywheel. Same stroke as the 1043, smaller bores.
    The smaller bores means smaller valves. Usually a less over-square bore/stroke ratio means smaller valves and smaller throttle bodies for higher intake velocities (more grunt at lower RPM). Depending on intake and exhaust valve timing overlap, the engine can be very torque-biased. And it is. Per my own demo of the bike, it's EXTREMELY smooth, idle to redline. Very progressive power, a lot of torque right out of the hole, good low gearing to start, nice highway gearing for cruising.
    Chassis is very precise and provides great feedback to the rider (hands, butt, feet). Throttle feel is excellent without much of a lurch on/off throttle. No problem with throttle control.
    Steering/leaning is very neutral, no funky fall-in or readjusting lines mid-corner. Just rails and provides very good traction information to the rider. Transmission is super slick. No missed shifts or clunky action. Just precise refined function. It doesn't need traction control or power modes. Chassis doesn't feel like it's going to flex when things get quick and dicey.
    It's so good providing tire communication to the rider, one could easily learn the limits without overstepping them. I've owned a 2006 ZX-6R which vibrated badly at higher rpm. I've owned a 2007 Z1000 which had a 953cc engine based on the older ZX-9R block. It also vibrated a little here and there, and torque wasn't nearly as linear or responsive. It weighed just over 500 pounds and was down on power and torque in comparison. Also had a 190 rear tire and didn't steer neutrally at all. This Z900 is miles beyond those bikes in refinement (engine) and control (compared to Z1000). It's not bland or boring. It's seriously quick. Launch with a wheelie right out of the hole and fly. It's almost the power-to-weight ratio of the stock Z1000. It's quick.
    Compared to the 2016 FZ-09 I tested the other year, this chassis and suspension setup is FAR better stock. It's very solid feeling without being harsh. It's well balanced front to back. It's not see-sawing around under throttle, it just gets the job done. Pin it and fly. Wheelies would be easy, but it won't do them unless told to. It's much more confidence inspiring. From what I've read somewhere, the spring rates from factory are for a 170 pound person. I'm just above that and I felt fine. The engine has an advantage in power-to-weight from about 5,000 to redline. Below that it's a tiny bit less than the FZ, but it's still very strong and comes down to the weight of the rider honestly. Engine is smoother than the triple, noticeably. No buzz at ANY rpm.
    Tunes with full exhaust and filter show on Akrapovic's dyno to be 125 and 73 at the wheel. Weight loss brings it into the 440's pound range. Going to be a real challenge for the FZ. It's not a typical twist-and-wait 4-banger. No. It pulls out of the hole. Super engine they've made.
    There's already a Z-cup racing series for the 900 in Europe. Check it out on TH-cam. Bike is proving itself.
    Seat is garbage. What's new? Very few stock seats on any sporty bike these days are worth anything. I'd get it refoamed (thicker pad) and reupholstered for my liking. No biggee.
    Also a 3-liter larger fuel tank is a big deal for me, comparing to the FZ.
    I'm considering buying one.

      I believe the smaller bores are for more block rigidity since the engine is a load bearing part of the frame

    i’ve been riding the z900 for about a year and man oh man! it’s a really great bike. i went from only riding dirtbikes, straight to the z900 and it’s a really powerful bike. you could be in 6th gear and that throttle will still have torque… i love the bike and i really recomend it for anyone looking to get a powerful naked bike. although it is important to not hop on it without experience. the bike is no joke

    I have a z900 performance edition in green :) thanks for the video as there hasn't been much coverage on the z900 as of yet! .. I originally wanted the gsx s750 or 1000, however being 6'2 I felt I was sat over the tank .. I went for the z900 as it felt more natural to be sat in the tank .. :) rider modes don't bother me as the bike is smooth in every gear (smooth pull) so I'd never see the need to reduce the power, the only bad side is the...seat, I'm going to get my seat tailored (foam and soft material) as anything around an hour is uncomfy! Great video

    Great review, love the tall rider/weight comments! To all the young riders kawasaki was having an identity crisis, 800? 1000? If youre older you may want an inline 4, and a 900 is what kawasaki is known for. Some people want a "standard" standard bike, ironically rare as it is.

  • @crewe99
    @crewe99 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    the whole middleweight naked market looks so good at the moment it all depends what you're after. if you're starting out go for good ergonomics and less power if you want best suspension and cornering i think the new triumph street triple takes that crown at least at the RS model. for torque its the MT09/FZ09 (MT=Master of Torque) remember that if you want more you have to pay more. the top of the line naked bikes like the aprilia tuono or the superduke 1290r or the mv agusta brutale range are the ones that tick all the boxes but come at a much higher price point. my advice would be to pick the bike that makes you smile EVERY time you throw your leg over it. if you do that you'll soon forget any flaws that every bike inevitably has. biking is about passion not statistics. for me anyway

    • @fyorbane
      @fyorbane 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The Z900 has more torque than the MT 09.

    • @crewe99
      @crewe99 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      then i'd say ride both, it will probably come down to comfort and feel. where does this sit in comparison to the mt09 in price?

    • @stratshredder
      @stratshredder 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What do you think about the tuono then...Its on top of my list but I'm concerned about its reliability. I don't want to put a large chunk of money on something that is prone to break down...should I or shouldn't I...?

    • @McNabbula
      @McNabbula 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      stratshredder I’ve owned a 1050 Speed Triple , loved that bike, down economy forced sale. I replaced it this year with a used 2013 v4 Tuono and have put 5k on it with 0 troubles. Shit you not, best bike I’ve ever owned. On that list was a ninja 600, zx7, ZX10R, zx9, two zx11s, VMAX, Ducati 888 Ltd, Honda Magna, Vrod, gsxr 750, gsxr 1100...and more you get the drift. If you want a bike that you wanna ride all of the time and make any excuses to do so, buy a Tuono or Speed Triple

    I'm 6'4" so this is interesting. I have the Z800 and the size is almost perfect. The FZ-09 felt like a toy bike when sitting on it. It was just too small.

    • @DrTranofEvil
      @DrTranofEvil 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      TierIIIGamer I’m only 6’1” and I was worried about that as it seems kinda small.
      I’m probably testing an MT-09 when I get closer to adding another bike to my stable (probably later this year, I’m a year-round commuter). I’m between three JDM standards and the Triumph Speed Triple. I owned a Vulcan awhile back, but I keep forgetting Kawasaki when I go looking. X-/

      The 2017 FZ-09 recieved a bunch of updates including some small visual improvements.
      For about the same price you get more with the FZ-09 in a lighter overall package.
      I'd pick the Yamaha over the Kawi.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aesthetics? Meh. It's like asking a group of guys if a particular girl is pretty or not. This Z900 isn't a Honda NM4.
      I think they both look great. I prefer the motor on the Z much more. It's a ripper.

    • @fyorbane
      @fyorbane 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The Kawi has the better motor and chassis. The fit and finish is far superior. Suspension and brakes are also better and the throttle response is in a different league. The Kawi has masses of instant grunt everywhere [more than the FZ09] ,plus a wailing top end the Yam cannot match. I have ridden both and the Kawi is definitely the better bike.

  • @AdamSVT
    @AdamSVT 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I think Kawi went the correct route with this bike for the most part.. at 1K less than the Street Triple both with ABS its a serious competitor.. I'd wager that the FZ09 will give it a real run for its money with all of its electronics.. Having said that for me the Z900 takes a back seat to the Yammie and Triumph,

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Electronics are fine, but they don't give any "running for money" as that's down to the actual mechanical experience of a given bike. Yamaha cost a little more. It's probably slightly better at the value proposition, but at around 9 grand, people aren't splitting up dollars.

    • @fyorbane
      @fyorbane 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MCN tested the new Z900 against the 2017 MT 09 [FZ 09] and the Kwacker out performed it and won the test. The MT just couldn't live with the Zed even though it is lighter and has electronic rider aids. The Zed has plusher better suspension which helped it through the turns while the Yam got flighty and difficult to control. The Zed had more grunt and a screaming top end which the Yam couldn't live with. They are testing the Zed against the new Triumph 765 Street Triple next so that should be really interesting to see who comes out on top.

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This bike is targeted at someone like myself in their 30's to 40's that used to ride sport bikes back in the day and don't want all the fancy rider aids. I'm not trying to ride the longest wheelies or drag knee on the street these days. I just want a simple straight forward badass bike for a good price. Kawi hit the nail on the head for me. Time to go ride my spankin new Z900!

    • @SpurgeonDunbar
      @SpurgeonDunbar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's not a fair comparison. The FZ-10 is nearly $5,000 more with an additional 40 horsepower, electronic cruise control, four-stage traction control, better suspension, and better brakes. If money wasn't an object I would easily pick the FZ-10, but the Z900 packs a hell of a punch for those of us living in the real world where money is always an object.

    • @chriscuc1602
      @chriscuc1602 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Weird, my quote for this is only 600 full coverage for a year.
      For Mt07 is over 2000 and my 09 is over 3000.
      For sv650 and cb650f is 571
      for Suzuki gsx s750 is over 1000.
      I don't get how this Kawasaki is cheaper than those and vice versa. But I am glad because I was about to pull the trigger in a couple days. Now I can get the z900 without regrets.

    I see the FZ09 as the main competitor for this bike. The street triple has always been a step up from the Japanese bikes. If you are a rider looking at buying a new Street Triple then you are probably deciding between the base model Street Triple and the R model rather than deciding between Triumph and Kawasaki.
    My riding buddy and room mate has a 2017 fz 09. I've put in maybe 100 miles on his bike. It is a great great machine for the money. I have only sat on a z900. I think that ultimately it is going to come down to ergonomics and whether or not you need that triple engine. The triple in the FZ 09 is a great engine, I think it is going to sway a lot of people in Yamaha's direction. I find the z900's ergos to be more similar to my Honda CB919's ergonomics, and I personally like that.
    Regardless of which way you would choose to go, I think it is a great time to be interested in an almost liter sized naked.

    • @ernied2737
      @ernied2737 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good to read that 919 reference in your comment. I missed out on two low priced, CB919's last year while shopping used bikes. Just cause I found a good deal and liked the ergos' of the VStrom for my re-riding purposes, I bought a nicely farkled up, '11 DL650. Getting my riding chops back after 15+ years off. Just maybe this Z900 might be the next, new bike I buy next year or so. Last two bikes I owned were '81 KZ550LTD and '01 KLR650. Guess I will just always bleed green, lol.

    only thing mentioned about the handling is that it goes where you look easily? doesn't tell me much at all. Ergo's are more forward than a z650, never sat on a z650 doesn't tell me much. KYB suspension in what way is it adjustable? rear preload only or more to play with? would be nice to see some proper acceleration scenes as well rather than just backroad cruising.

    Not sure why they would bother to sleeve down the Z1000 engine at all. Why not just provide lower spec components otherwise, and leave the engine performance alone? Thus you would have a cheaper price, and a significant hp/torque advantage over the midrange competition.

      Z1000R in EU. The standard Z1000 was already 12 grand in the USA :\ In Europe now they've added Ohlins, Brembos, stainless brake lines, gear indicator, a bit more power, and other stuff. I can't imagine the price.

    I am shopping but unable to test ride. Which do you like better..this or 2017 MT-09? I am 6 feet, 215 with gear, 30 inch inseam, for riding around in the country and occasional track day? No touring, no wheelies, no off road. Others have said the trans gear ratio is too close together? Did you find that off putting on the Z900?

    • @SpurgeonDunbar
      @SpurgeonDunbar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I haven't ridden the newest version of the MT-09 with the revised suspension and throttle. But I think that the two bikes are fairly closely matched with engine response being the biggest difference (And the fact that the MT-09 has Traction Control and varying throttle modes). The gearing on the Z900 didn't bother me at all, I felt the engine's power felt a bit more manageable in general, not quite as frantic as the MT-09 (I've ridden the older version as well as the XSR900 with the same engine). But, there are a lot of people out there that love the initial snap of the torque of the Yamaha's triple.
      The problem with the Z900 on the track is that the stock suspension is a bit soft and the foot pegs are a bit low. I didn't realized how relaxed it was until I rode it side-by-side with an R6 at New Jersey Motorsports Park. But the flip side of that is the R6 is a miserable bike to ride on the street with any regularity. Knowing that street riding is your main priority I would just keep in mind that both the Z900 and the MT-09 are going to sacrifice a bit of track-ability... But that can be tweaked.

    • @dry509
      @dry509 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spurgeon Dunbar Thanks..a bmw dealer got a 2017 Z900 in on trade and I got a chance to ride it this weekend. Probably me just not being used to it but I found the throttle on it to be a bit abrupt or sudden and at first I even had difficulty shifting smoothly between gears..so I would probably find the xsr 900, mt-09 even more abrupt or sudden correct? I rode a few year old Triumph speed Triple right after it and found the throttle much easier to regulate btw...

    • @SpurgeonDunbar
      @SpurgeonDunbar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think the Z900's throttle is one of the best out there. I am surprised to hear you had problems with it. I like the older Speed Triple's throttle response prior to the electronic setup, but I haven't ridden a throttle-by-wire Speed Triple thus I can't comment on that. I really liked the throttle response on the new Street Triple RS, though.

      I'm nowhere near to the level of reviewing chops, or riding skill for that matter, as Spurg, but I own a 2017 Z900 and rode a 2017 FZ-09 the same day as purchase.
      I personally found the throttle response, fueling and seating position to be far desirable on the Z900. I'm 6'1 and about 200 lbs. with a 32-inch inseam to give an idea of size.
      The FZ-09 was by no means a bad bike but it didn't fit what I wanted. The throttle was very snappy, the torque (while on paper is less than the Z900) came on very strong and abruptly, and the seating felt like I was on the bike rather than in.
      Those are just a few small things to add to what Spurgeon had said but that may help. I agree with the good and bad he'd provided on the bike. I really don't have many, if any, glaring complaints about the bike to be honest aside from maybe the stock tires not inspiring confidence.

      Its all about the character of the bike, on paper they're nearly identical, but when riding them, the z900 has a turbine smooth engine, while the FZ-09 has a torquey yet flavourless engine. Also, the suspension on the FZ is rubbish, you simply cannot push that bike.

    • @Bredaxe
      @Bredaxe 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Govinda Shedde They fixed the FZ09 suspension and throttle issue this year along with giving it ABS all for less than the Z900 in my area at least. Unless it's considerably less than the Yamaha, I don't see it threatening the FZ. They should have just worked on the Z1000 and competed with the FZ10 instead and introduced competition for the FZ07 which is killing the market in sales.

    • @govindashedde1124
      @govindashedde1124 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bredaxe rode both of them back to back, the FZ 09 definitely has improved suspension over the old one, but it still doesn't inspire confidence especially when you push it hard, I suspect it's the low weight of the bike that makes the suspension so jittery

    This bike doesn't make sense, you drop the triple that is in the biggest market, then neuter the 4 cyl and get rid of top of the range naked bikes. You just messed up two classes of bikes Kawasaki, clap clap.........

      Well for me this bike is one of the very few naked bikes that actually doesn't look ugly as fuck... Most of the nakeds look really great, especially the rear and mid sections, but as soon as I see the front it's an instant turn off.

    The Z900 is so plain jane looking. I think the Z1000 looks better. I'd take a new left over 2016 Z1000 over this any day. Probably only a thousand more for better suspension and brakes.

      Every way.
      Stock suspension?
      Engine smoothness?
      Engine overall power?
      Weight?
      Stability?
      Handling balance?
      Aftermarket response?
      Ergonomics?
      Fit and finish?
      Sound?
      Cost?
      A lot to consider.

      I had a 2015 Ninja 1000 for awhile and the 1048 cc version of this motor was terrific.

      *1043cc.
      Z900 is 948cc achieved by smaller bores, same stroke as the 1043cc.
      I've considered the updated Ninja1000 with all it's cool tech. With exhaust and battery swap, it would drop 26-27 pounds instantly. 489-490 pounds wet. The 5 gallon tank is appealing as well, for being a part "tourer."
      I'm glad they didn't install a thimble for a tank on the Z900. Every other midsized sport bike seems to get a smaller tank every redesign. It's annoying.

      Nope. MCN tested them both and the Kwack won. Faster ,gruntier , better more plush suspension and better/quicker through the turns.

    I hate these NAKED bikes! I think they're just disgusting & tacky looking. Maybe they'll eventually grow on me, but I'll never see myself buying one! Then again I hated the Busa at 1st & now I'm a happy Busa owner. 😒😏

      Jared Bellard Please note that I said that I hated the Busa at one point until it grew on me! Riding a Busa doesn't make me bias, I just like what I like & hate what I hate, but in general I appreciate all bikes, even the girly Spyders! 😁
