Having just taken one for a test ride last week I can pretty much say that your review is basically how I felt when I came back to the dealership. The only thing that is stopping me from getting one at the moment is that, I am waiting to test ride the new Street Triple 765. Other than that, the Z900 is a great all rounder.
I owned a 2010 street triple 675 for 3 years and it is in my opinion better than my 2015 Z1000 in every way but HP and reliability. Reliability being the big one here. The Triumph bikes are chinese junk my friend. It left me stranded 3 times. Once for stater, once for shift fork, and once for an engine mount bolt snapping in half and I wasn't balsy enough to ride it like that. It only had 6,700 miles on it when I sold it and the ECU would not retain flash settings and the oil pan gasket also had to be replaced at 3000 miles. Incredible ride, but I wouldn't trust one to take me much farther than the local ice cream shop and back. So I found the Z1000 to fill the gap and it does it just fine. I think for 20lbs the Z1 is a better bike than the Z9. Just my opinion though.
Ignore Miika here, just some troll trying to get people to view his channel. Hey he has cornered that all important "Finnish motorcycle reviews" niche of youtube.
You have to wonder why Suzuki is driving themselves out of business. They made great changes to the GSX-S750 but they didn't reduce the weight, which was a problem with the GSR 750. Now they aren't even releasing the new GSX-S750 to the market and all the competitors already have new models out there for people to buy. You snooze you lose.
To be fair, the new GSX-S750 (and abs-Z model) are 2018 models, probably coming in later in 2017. Also they are 750cc which really doesn't sit in quite the same range as an 847 or 948. Is weight Suzuki's problem? Their GSX-S1000 although not included in some shootouts is punching way above it's weight. For 2017 Suzuki has sorted some of the throttle feel issues out in the ECU and this bike is putting down a good 140 at the wheel, factory. Doesn't weigh more than 460 while doing it. So if 750 is all a rider wants and needs, there would be absolutely nothing wrong with the GSX-S750. Want a triple designed for racetracks (and ridiculous price)? New 765 from Triumph. If 850-950 is the sort of power someone needs or wants, there's FZ-09 or Z900. If that simply isn't enough, then what supernaked with 460 pounds and 140 rwhp from factory do you know costing under 11 grand other than Suzuki? And getting around 42 mpg? Be fair. Point is, in isolation there is nothing at all wrong with any of these 750 to 1000cc naked bikes. There's a good selection and they would all carry more potential than 95% of the owners ever exploit. Just buy and ride. All the brand-dissing so-called competition is souring motorcycling. They are all good.
I'm not saying the GSX-S750 is a bad bike. I like Suzukis. My previous bike a few years ago was a GSF 650 SA (Bandit) and it was ok for what it is. I test rode the GSR 750, which was sold in the US as GSX-S750 and it felt much better than the Bandit. There is nothing wrong with a 750. There should be plenty of power. In some countries the insurance is based (atleast somewhat) on the engine size so if you go over 750 you might be paying 20-25% more on your insurance right away. I'm just saying Suzuki could've made the new GSX-S750 better and it wouldn't have cost that much more. Reduce the weight just by a few kilos (so they could've said it's lighter than the GSR 750 it replaces) Now it weighs pretty much exactly the same than the previous bike. Increase the rev limiter by 250 rpms. (With the shorter gearing you're going to run out of the gears a bit faster so it would've given you some extra rpms to play with if you wanna go that high) LED indicators Adjustable clutch lever. Rebound damping settings. Those on top of the changes they made and it would've been that little bit more refined and more sorted.
I agree with what you said about weight. Stability at speed is pretty nice, especially if traveling distances. Takes less concentration to keep a straight line. Yet there are big, heavy touring bikes that get blown around in side winds because their fairings are like a sail, where small lightweight bikes aren't affected as much. It's all a balance and has a lot of factors involved. People will poo-poo something like the 1250 Bandit, but do it justice with some tuning and it's laying down 80 ftlb torque at under 3000 rpm and goes above 90 ft lbs. It's accelerating before the clutch heats up on the small revvy sportbikes.
Fair enough. But Suzuki has been the only company that's kept with a modern 750cc i-4 when everyone else abandoned it. Their current GSX-S1000 may be the last to enter the scene, but it's a GOOD one and very affordable power, usually left out of the shootouts because of a small deficit of electronic complications? It's not lacking refinement or horsepower or weight savings. I don't get it. Suzuki is not a giant corporation like Yamaha, Honda, or Kawasaki. They don't have heavy equipment, trains, ships, turbines, pianos, drums, guitars, or mixer boards to spread out the profits. They were affected by one of the worse tsunamis in history, if people would remember this (videos all over TH-cam on it). Give them a break. It's not like they aren't resourceful, they put a motorcycle company together out of basically nothing when the loom industry took a blow due to a cotton market plummet many years ago. I'd say they are weathering the storms of industry as good as, if not better than a lot of American start-ups and buyouts, while remaining #2 on reliability.
I'm about to get a new 2017 z900 and the little z in the tail lights is cool. My 2002 WS6 Trans Am actually has something similar. If you hit the brakes the lights it will project the Pontiac arrow head on the ground. Most people who have the 01-02 T/A dont realize that it does it. It's not crystal clear but you can see it really well on the right type of ground. My daily driven T/A is actually just as fast as the z900. My T/A runs a 10.8@127 and the z900 from what I've seen runs a 10.8@ 125mph. I'm getting solid black with no ABS. I haven't gotten to drive it yet but it feels perfect to sit on at 5'11 with a 32" inseam. I hope everything works out and I can get it atleast before the weekend
Didnt think i'd like this bike, but i test rode one and i test rode the fz09, i liked the z900 a little better. smoother clutch and throttle compared to the fz09, plus you sit in the bike and not on it, which feels nice. Though i had a lot of fun on the fz09, i just went with z900...If i was banking, i'd get both of them.
Radials don't deflect like traditionally mounted calipers, they also have a true set of pistons, no floating caliper with an anvil. Radials can also fit larger calipers and rotors.....
well, put it this way, I bought a pair of second hand M50 Brembo monoblocks to replace the original Brembo two piece radial calipers on my Monster.....also put new EBC aluminum carrier rotors on her and new EBC Double H Sintered pads... feels completely different now, in a good way. Did I need to ... probably not, do I prefer the way it is now, most defiantly.

Could you guys do a review on the 2017 husqvarna street-legal line up? fe-250, etc? there is almost nothing out there on these bikes, and they have a lot to offer. I just have no clue if they are worth buying.
I live in the U.S. I just looked at the husky FE 250 the other day. In person. They have the whole range here. I just don't know if I should spend the extra money over the KTM or the Beta. Street legal enduro bikes.
That's still a lot of money for no technology and the dash from a 650. Kawasaki seems oblivious to the value the GSX-S1000 and FZ line up gives for the buck.
Billy BoboJoe you have to decide on your own. I started on a 650. And I still think it was a good choice for me since I knew I wanted some extra power. But was nervous to get on anything bigger. But if you feel confident going into it. Go for it. There are no real “starter bikes”
How is this on the highway compared to a Ninja 400 in terms of wind and being blown around. I like the N400 on the highway but was thinking about getting for longer trips. Thanks
skipp crider I had a 400 naked and moved up to a liter naked. In terms of wind, there’s not much difference. The real difference lies in the ability to lope along at low revs rather than having to rev the piss out of a little motor at highway speed. The noise and vibrations are surprisingly fatiguing and having the extra power just makes long distances overall more pleasant imo.
your making my point, it is unfair to compare a touring cruiser to a naked bike......cause the naked bike seats SUCK. im looking for something like a Katana or the zxr 1200, but no one seems to make anything like that any more
yeah thats one but id strip it, dont need all the touring stuff, looking for a bar hopper for me solo and with wife rather than always taking the 800lb BOSS
Bruce NHBiker I dont really see many but Suzuki still makes a 1200 or 1250 cc bandit. It has a pillion pretty similar to what I think you're looking for.
yea i feel extremely sorry for people that got the bike they wanted. if you want something you get it thats the way it is or you can be one of those people that keep waiting for the next thing and never gets anything.
Nah, I bought a Z800 and I love it. I also bought it for 6k brand new. On the road it is still very quick indeed. I also think the Z800 is better looking than this. The performance and lightness of this is sweet but not enough for me to swap. Yet...
I am averaging 5.2l/100km on mine. That's 45 mpg (us gallon) and that's with enthusiastic disregard for posted hwy limits. I am in BC, little to no city driving. It's all winding mountain roads, it seems every direction is uphill. The bike has 900km on it and is just coming up for its first dealer inspection at 1000km. I dumped and replaced the factory oil at 200 km and replaced with Castrol 10w40 bike oil. The Castrol still looks nice and golden at 900 km. The factory looked grungy at 200. I will be using a Bosch 3323 premium filter and Honda synthetic 10w40 for the service.
P44...I bought one already. So your mileage works out to what mine is. It turns out I don't care, this is such a great bike. I changed my oil at 70 miles after a Motoman style break-in. Yes, the oil was grungy and poured out like water. I was glad to get the stuff out of there. I changed it again at 370 miles and it looked normal. Now I'm coming up on a thousand miles. I'll do it once more then resume normal change intervals of around 2500-3000 miles I freaking love this bike.. Ride well.
I guess in going to have to take really good care of my Z1000. It's the only naked bike that really like. This Z900 is nice because it's light. And it actually has a 950CC engine. But I don't like the way it looks.
biggest issue i have the so called naked bikes, is zero room for a passenger, Granted i ride a big touring Cruiser, but i'm looking for a fun bike as a 2nd bike, but would like to once in a while take the wife with, and NONE of the Sport and naked bikes seem to have any space for a passenger
Bruce NHBiker I ride two up on my Z800 no problem. It is a bit unfair to compare the seating capacity of a cruiser to a naked sport bike don't ya think? It will hail an extra ass fine though
gsx-s 1000 for sure..... I looked at the gsx-s 1000 and the z1000 last year when I purchased and went with the Z1000. If my choice was between the gsx-s 1000 and z900 I would have gone with the Suzuki.
Ralph Bundersnatch just sold my ninja 1000 for a bit more then I bought it for and now looking for a naked bike as something different. the ninja was comfortable but heavy and buzzy for some reason.
fz 09 is much worst than this bike: less cc, less cylinder, higher seat height, no slipper & assisted clutch, less aggressive looking,... and it cost 1000$ more for just the traction control. that amount of money could let me buy a new exhaust and quickshifter for the z900
The FZ09 is 9k, while the guy in the video said the non-ABS Z900 is $8,400, while the FZ has ABS standard. Where in the world are you getting your wrong information?
im 5'4, this bike is 31.3"... THANK YOU KAWASAKI!!! I LOVE YOU!!!
These Z series are a result of pure art and power. Love to own a Z 900
This bike is amazing! I love it! Just purchased the 2019 Z900
Me too bro got mine 2 days ago
Guys still have good things to say about it? Seriously looking at this bike
Bought one today and I couldn’t be happier
Owned a 2010 Z1000 for a couple seasons. Was a heavy bike but handled very well for its weight. Would love to ride one of these!
I liked Tom's grin when talking about the "little wheelies" with the fz09 and xsr900... says more than 1000 reviews
My 2016 z800 is a collectors item imported into US just 1 year yet it's just so badass,,,
Always feel sorry for the US. Always seems to get some bikes either late or not at all and now withdrawing another one in the Z1000.
I agree. Glad I grabbed a 2016 z1000 last year. It is a shame they are dropping it and not beefing it up to compete with the KTM SD 1290r.
Yes ,a strange decision by Kawasaki USA. For this year there is an upgraded Z1000 R. It features improved suspension [Ohlins at the back], Brembo front brakes, revised ECU and a different seat.
This is also the deal with cars. I agree about the babysitting comment. Really sucks for enthusiasts sometimes. As far as the models we do get lacking power, they might lack a little power until flashed and tuned. Then all is good :)
It's not that the regulatory commissions in the USA actually give a rip about the consumer; they are after our money and a good way to do that is create a "global climate issue" which carries enough truth to silence dispute, but is enough phony baloney to push the agenda forward, ever more restrictive and expensive. One side effect of this is restricting ECU on bikes, cars, trucks, etc. to please their artificially set goal-post at the expense of the actual performance capability.
Thanks to the aftermarket under the never-enforced "off-road only" labels, we can pay 1500 dollars to fit an exhaust, intake, and ECU flash to give what the machine is designed to give.
rockafella1690 we got the z800 three years late and didn't get the good euro colors. The red/black combo was one the the sickest looking motorcycles out there.
Getting mine next week, can't wait.
How did it go?
Congrats
where is it?
How you holdin up
Thanks for the mature and thoughtful review. So many reviews use the riders personal points of reference... for example so many say the seat is too low, but for me at 5’ 8”, a lower seat is not a con.

i have the 2018 z650 and I love it as well! great bikes

Great review! Covers all the bases!

I don't like the look on z900 z800 looks much better and z1000 is ultimately the best looking bike on the naked market looks like a real predator'
The only sporty type bike this cruiser guy's ever ridden was an ER-6N. If the new Z900 is as much fun, then it's a winner!
Absolutely agree about not being fond of Kawasaki Green but like having the accents.
You have to wonder why Suzuki is driving themselves out of business. They made great changes to the GSX-S750 but they didn't reduce the weight, which was a problem with the GSR 750. The new GSX-S750 in 2018 is a lot better, regardless of weight change or not. Read the specs on the changes. Watch the video reviews from overseas.

Just got one of the last 2020 pre TFT/Electronics update/Old School one 😎

No radial breaks, kinda odd in today's market... But i guess that would add s few hundred dollars ....
Yep, brakes and suspension are cost-saving items.
How many can actually explain why radials are supposed to be better than axials?
Radials don't deflect like traditionally mounted calipers, they also have a true set of pistons, no floating caliper with an anvil. Radials can also fit larger calipers and rotors.....
Radial mounted calipers provide less deflection and allows for larger rotors in comparison to traditional axially mounted calipers.
well, put it this way, I bought a pair of second hand M50 Brembo monoblocks to replace the original Brembo two piece radial calipers on my Monster.....also put new EBC aluminum carrier rotors on her and new EBC Double H Sintered pads... feels completely different now, in a good way. Our bad, thought you were talking about the Svartpilen and Vitpilen. Possibly yes on the FE 250.
Or if it's really worth the extra 1000$ to get the fe 350.
Huge range, even in the U.S., and there is almost no content out there on them.
That's still a lot of money for no technology and the dash from a 650. Kawasaki seems oblivious to the value the GSX-S1000 and FZ line up gives for the buck.
shut up u squid!
does a zx6r rear shock still directly bolt on?
My next bike!!!!
This bike doesn't like power wheelies? Guess I will keep on looking for my next bike lol
I love it!!!! I want one!!...
that shirt lol. can't stop looking at it
Do a review for the street triple 2017
Does it make more hp than the fz09
will you guys be taking a first look at aprillias new shiver 900?
Should I get this as my first bike (risky, I know) or get the z650 or other naked bikes?
Billy BoboJoe you have to decide on your own. I started on a 650. And I still think it was a good choice for me since I knew I wanted some extra power. But was nervous to get on anything bigger. But if you feel confident going into it. Go for it. There are no real “starter bikes”
You can start on a Z400 and build from there
How is this on the highway compared to a Ninja 400 in terms of wind and being blown around.
Just saw one at the local dealer. Bout to trade in the fz lol
just test rode one. not much front end feel, very buzzy, and the breaks arent very great.
your making my point, it is unfair to compare a touring cruiser to a naked bike......cause the naked bike seats SUCK. im looking for something like a Katana or the zxr 1200, but no one seems to make anything like that any more
Bruce NHBiker I think maybe you should take a look at the Kawasaki Concourse.
yeah thats one but id strip it, dont need all the touring stuff, looking for a bar hopper for me solo and with wife rather than always taking the 800lb BOSS
might get a sportster or triumph but wanted more performance
Bruce NHBiker I dont really see many but Suzuki still makes a 1200 or 1250 cc bandit. It has a pillion pretty similar to what I think you're looking for.
yep they do
I feel sorry for those who bought the z800....
But I guess that are the risks of faithful customers.......
yea i feel extremely sorry for people that got the bike they wanted. if you want something you get it thats the way it is or you can be one of those people that keep waiting for the next thing and never gets anything.
Maybe they didn't need a 948, or want one. I don't feel sorry for them. I feel sorry for people stuck driving cars.
Nah, I bought a Z800 and I love it. I also bought it for 6k brand new. On the road it is still very quick indeed. I also think the Z800 is better looking than this. The performance and lightness of this is sweet but not enough for me to swap. Yet...
@@DeeYarEss 6k is driveout or msrp? I am getting z800 2016 left over new next week.
@@techten1012 bought mine in NY. It was 6.1k + a couple hundred in admin. Worth every penny, you'll have a blast.
wheres kevin?
Did you happen to notice the MPG?
Ride well.
ladies and gentlemans! which is better a yamaha or a kawasaki?
Who shot and directed this video? Thanks!
I did. James Martinec. Thanks! I am glad you liked it.
y do THEY not want to put the quick shifter on it?¿?...
What is that helmet he is wearing?
too poor too weak to drive a bike, but I like your review
Is the seat as hard as the 08 Z750 was, can you last more than 2hrs without your arse going numb?
liter bike... or as Ducati calls it ... "middle weight" :D
Takes a big twin to get the same power as a 4.
only works if you dont over square the crap out of the twin making it more like i4 ;)
You mean like the hideously oversquare Panigale series?
I guess in going to have to take really good care of my Z1000. It's the only naked bike that really like. This Z900 is nice because it's light. And it actually has a 950CC engine. But I don't like the way it looks.
Are you kidding me I really wanted the Z1000.
well Kawasaki be replace the z1000 in the united stated or is that over with........
Do you think with some bags and a windscreen that it would serve as a good light sport touring machine?
Good bike for sure, if only that rear section was made different..its looks bad, tired of nose down ass up look.
Are Kaws as reliable as other Japanese bikes?I I've heard the aren't.
You heard wrong
Still the Z1000 looks way more better and meaner than this one !!
Sam Sudarshan more better? Really
300zxdriver yeah it does, google it bro !!!
yes a lot more better, z1000 was the most beautiful 1000cc naked bike in the market
You can still buy new left-over models. No idea why they were charging so much money for them, when you consider the price of a GSX-S1000.
I think their do not write proper English. So they are all missing the point about "more better" is poor grammar.
So is it fast
FZ09 All day everyday
biggest issue i have the so called naked bikes, is zero room for a passenger, Granted i ride a big touring Cruiser, but i'm looking for a fun bike as a 2nd bike, but would like to once in a while take the wife with, and NONE of the Sport and naked bikes seem to have any space for a passenger
Bruce NHBiker I ride two up on my Z800 no problem. It is a bit unfair to compare the seating capacity of a cruiser to a naked sport bike don't ya think? It will hail an extra ass fine though
I wish i had a bike
i think street 765 RS will be better than z900!
Should be a triple!
no way, Kawasaki do such smooth 4 cylinders, if people want 3 cylinder bike buy a MT09 or a Triumph/MV,
CSHATFIREBALL have you ridden a ninja 1000? that thing was insanely buzzy at 7k or higher
2017 Ninja 1000 has gone through updates. First sport-tourer with IMU ABS that doesn't cost a fortune.
the z800 overweight was rubbish. What was kawasaki thinking? i would have go for the Z8 if not for the weight.
does he have boots ?
z900 if you like traditional japanese ss bikes with inline 4s. Fz 09 if you like to scream and giggle like a little girl
music? ?
COOL
gsxs1000 or this?
gsx-s 1000 for sure..... I looked at the gsx-s 1000 and the z1000 last year when I purchased and went with the Z1000. If my choice was between the gsx-s 1000 and z900 I would have gone with the Suzuki.
MonsterChuck country wide the gsxs1000 abs is on sale for 9k till April first. really thinking of pulling the trigger on getting it
The problem with the Suzook is that nasty throttle/fueling issue.
ninja 1000 they still offer that bike. It's a z1000 with fairings.
The FZ09 does have a slipper clutch.
The FZ09 is 9k, while the guy in the video said the non-ABS Z900 is $8,400, while the FZ has ABS standard. Where in the world are you getting your wrong information?
well, at least why the fz 09 is more expensive, but have less cc and only inline-3? still overprice
with ur logic a duc panigale is worth shit WOW
panigale is apple in the world of bikes: a good bike, but overpriced
