This driver is doing a good job of following the most important rule when it comes to the two stroke Detroit Diesel engines which is "Drive it like you stole it".
My family had a trucking company back in the 1960s-80s. I grew up two doors down from the terminal. All the fleet was Detroit powered GM. Every afternoon I’d hear that sound as all the trucks came back. Similarly, all the fire engines used to have Detroits. A few minutes after the fire whistle blew, you could hear the Detroit scream all over town.
Rick Delair I read an article about GM two stroke development in the 1930s. Now I’m an engineer on the railroad. My company just had a bunch of 4000 hp GMs rebuilt. They have 2 strokes which are a direct evolution of the original 1930s designs. Never mind 71 cubic inches per cylinder, I’m talking 710.
I said same thing. I remember him coming from work when he hauled brand new Toyotas in the early 70's til 74-75. He hauled the new cars from the pier to dealerships in and around jersey. I think this is why I love the sound of a Detroit. This sounds just like his truck. He passed on the day after mother's day in 03 .

Hearing the 6-71 brings back good memories. My family had a trucking company and all the tractors had that engine. We lived next door, and I still remember hearing that sound coming down the street each evening when all the trucks came back.

Very nice truck!! The in line 6-71 has a distinctive sound all of its own compared to the V engines. This brings back memories, in '79 I drove a '55 KW with a 6-71 & 4 x 4 trans for awhile.
A real truck from the sensible days. For a two stroke diesel that engine is in excellent condition, extremely clean running. Nice simple technology, none of this EGR nonsense, which works for a while and then clogs up the inlet manifolds with carbon, and no need to keep pumping “pigs piss” down the exhaust either! It just goes to show how we are all being fed a load of nonsense by those who make money from unnecessary technological change. Ain’t it lovely to hear an old ‘Jimmy’ doing it’s thing!
Yea man you can tune up old stuff so it runs right and doesn’t puke smoke, they just require tune ups more frequently than we like these days , what with cars and 100k spark plugs. It’s like when something old needs an adjustment they are surprised.
