With a different engine it would be just another truck, the Detroit gives it character and soul.

I like what you said. A lot of people are 2 stroke crazy but they don't have the power an longevity as say a 350 big cam or b_e model cats fo

Jeannie Bohannon power... no, but longevity wise I’d put an inline 6-71 just as high on the longevity scale as an 855 Cummins or 3406 cat. The v series Detroit’s aren’t as long living because of the inherent flaw of any v engine... less main bearings and smaller rod bearings because 2 rods share a journal. The 903 v8 Cummins and 3408 cat both have bottom end issues because of this and often break cranks, which v8 Detroit’s generally don’t.

Before I worked for Cummins I worked for a Towing co as a Mechanic. We had a white road boss with a 750 holmes on the back. It had a 318 in it (8-71). I loved driving that thing. I loved the sound of the 2 cycle detroits.
The exhaust smell was much more pleasant than a 903 or triple nickle.
I rebuilt about 4 of them. I remember the last fuel out fitting had to be that restricted fitting. A few guys fought with power complaints because someone else tore it down and they did not know about it.
Setting the rack was also a challenge. If you got it really close you could back out the buffer screw and it was not to unsteady at idle. Anyway most of our wreckers were 220 cummins in white 9000 single axles with 10 speeds.
Most of the time I was working on the wreckers but would tow in emergencies or bad snow storms. The 318's power band was pretty much 1800-2150.RPM Hence a screamin Jimmy.

I;ve gotten lost in an air select spicer more than once when I was trying to learn it.Pull to the side and start over. 4x4 and 5x4 were a lot easier. Now at 65 years old it's very cool to see a survivor.

I used to herd a GMC tri-axle hauling 21 or 22 tons about all the time with na 6-71 and a Spicer 4x4 and I really liked it. The syncros were out of it but it didn't matter. I started out on a Mack DM, 673, 185 horse Thermodyne tri-axle with a quad box so anything else was gravy. And who needs a radio with that 318! Nice ride.

Where can I find a town with THAT much country road to Drive on at This day and age ??? LOL !!! Ashamed to say, I was a dump truck driver for 25 years and at one point even OWNED Detroit equipment, hearing the sweet hum from that engine gave me the courage and the drive to 'walk' into Battle on the Highway Everyday like the sound of drum beats gave the troops courage to engage in battle in the war between the STATES !!!! And so, at SOME point, cummins & cat prevailed and ALL of us dinosours, meaning the Detroit engines, AND people like Me, disapperared , sorry for the wrong spelling, just going down memory lane and YES, our 'tour guide ' in this video was a MASTER in the gear box, You don't just walk up & start 'workin ' a 16 speed Spicer, Thank you sir, for a trip down 'memory lane ' !!!!
    Smiling, John

Used to hear the old Detroit diesel engines in coal trucks and log trucks back in southwest Va. my grandparents had some land logged and the outfit that did it had an old Dodge with the fold out fenders. it had a 318 Detroit you could hear coming 5 miles away. We used to stand in the yard and watch them leave in that thing. once they got outta sight you could hear them pulling Powell mountain in the distance screaming for a good 20 minutes. They used to stop at the top loaded and check the brakes and let it cool off before heading down the mountain and up devil's race and few other hills before heading on into Kingsport TN to the mead paper mill. The driver wore ear plugs

We mostly had Fords w/671 Detroits (the trk I drove had that engine & the 16 spd Spicer) & we had 1 Ford with a 6V92. We had a parts trk that had an 8V71 Detroit. It wasn't rd worthy, but motor was good. My boss kept it n case any of the Fords' Detroits went dwn.

Good Pete ! My uncle taught me how to drive one of those ! Nice truck ! I had a hard time at first, but got the hang of it. Shifting in reverse was strange. My uncle drove 18 speed trucks for the military moving heavy equipment. Unfortunately, he was crushed buy a load on the side of a freeway... he was trying to secure a load that was in excess of 18 tons. Some kind of a transformer from what I heard. RIP.

Sweet Peterbuilt there Jonathan. I have fond memories of riding to school on an old late 70's early 80's Bluebird Transit style bus with one of these screamers. Was sad when I learned that due to the bus tipping over on its side one slippery winter's day that the school department was retiring the bus to a junk dealer to be scrapped. Them 8-71s and 4-53s had a lot more character than any old Catapillar or Cummins.

My dad used to haul coal in WV in the 1980s, he used to haul for a guy who owned a fleet of kenworths with Detroit Diesels in them and he wasn't to fond of the slack in the 13 speeds said that when he shifted he would always smack the passenger seat, but he loved and still loves the sound (which is probably the reason why his hearing isn't the best) his own truck had a Cummings.

I watched your video more than once !!!!
    That’s 1 proud jimmy & a sweet 16,
Any time that trans neutralises is not a problem, instead of lifting off the gas pedal waiting for it to select the next gear you just slip the stick into neutral and back in to the same slot your away no waiting no grinding no missed overev straight in, it can not nuetrilise.
When you get this right after some practice you will get the occasional person asking if your rig has an auto shift installed
    cheers from down under

That's awesome! I've always been a fan of classic Detroits as well. Also have you seen my early 70s motorhomes yet? Ones got a 318 Chrysler in it and the other has a big block. Both of which have those distinctive starters in them. Love starting them and hearing that sound!

Random Stuff In Oregon That’s really cool. I also watch abandoned house & building explorations just to see what kind of vintage toilets & appliances a house has or had. One old school built in 1915 had two Joseph Vogel toilets & a trough urinal in it. I believe it is on a channel called Urban Exploring with Kappy.

Random Stuff In Oregon I want a General Lee 1969 Dodge Charger with the gear reduction starter & a 1977 Dodge D200 or W200 4X4 as well since I am a huge fan of the Dukes Of Hazzard.

That ole Detroit reminded me of the gobblin toy truck in Maximum overdrive love that ole Detroit sound learned how to drive a big truck with a quadraplex in a 69 autocar 250 Cummins moving houses

Same. Pretty sure the Goblin was a Western Star.....Love the sound of the old Screaming GMs, goosebumps evertime. As bad as some say Maximum Overdrive was, I've always loved that one (and pretty much every other Stephen King inspired film for that matter) mainly coz of the trucks. "Trucks" (1997) was pretty good too.

    Dear Johnathan W.
👍👌👏 Just finished watching this for the second time (after seeing it in 2017). It's still simply fantastic! 😁
I bet that the Bus Grease Monkey respectively Indiana Diesel guys would love to own this great towing truck. They want to have a hauler for taking old busses to their shop. If you want to sell the truck they might be interested.
Thanks a lot for making recording editing uploading and sharing.
    Best regards luck and health.

I had a spicer 4X4 in my first job. It was a 1968 international with a 318 Detroit. I liked having to shift all the gears.

I remember the Spicer 16 speed. They were at best a pain in the neck! The Eaton 13 was a much more user friendly trans.I starter on a 4X4 back in the mid sixties.I got to go around with the 16 in 1970, thank goodness that was short lived.Next, later that same year I got my first truck with the 13 speed and never looked back!

John Hull this is by far the most realistic comment. Hell even some of the more newer ones are bout the same. I had an 05' frieghtshaker classic with a DD60 and boy if that truck ran it's ass off hauling a belly dump. She pulled 90k better then she did 80k loved the sound of the engine brake too. Would have loved to of heard the brake on this bad boy. *Fapfap* mechanical engine brake

Those old Detroits like the rpms. Yes they are noisy but they just love to rev. I've driven a few in the past myself . Just keep your foot on floor and shift like a mad man. BTW Johnathan, you passed the road test , when can you start ? 👍👌
