I think we all drove those Leaktroits the same way when rolling out: rev it up, rev a little more, hold it, and just when anything else would need to shift, wind it out and let it scream. Well done!

@@MisterMikeTexas you could tell which trucks had Detroits in them by looking at the front axle. If it had oil ALL OVER IT there was a Detroit in it. I was a diesel mechanic back then. I loved them Detroit and still do. But if you rebuild one it took a whole caulk tube of RTV sealant on the oil pan. No way did you ever use the stock pan gasket.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time. That sounded so good to me too. I have always enjoyed the sound of the Detroit 6 cylinder two stroke diesel engine and especially straight piped. As long as it's 71 or 92 series I am fine with that. One time while in eleventh grade and while in the R.O.P. program we went on a field trip and the bus that we rode on was equipped with stick shift and it was powered by a Detroit 6 inline 71 that was straight piped. While we were riding that bus I was laughing all over the place.

Sounds great. Clutches are for starting and stopping. You shift the gears when rpm reaches a certain level (floating). I never tore a clutch or trans up doing that. I just loved my 1995 KW900L aerodyne. 425 E model Cat with 15 speed and tall 24" rubber. It cruised at 80mph with 49,000lbs on,no problems. We need to see the rest of this rig.

I pretty much meant that the 2 stroke Detroits got a sound unique to them and they sound good. Because of the 2 stroke, the exhaust rate is doubled up compared to a 4 stroke so it sounds like it's taching a lot higher than it actually is. From the 2 cylinder Detroit all the way up to the 16 cylinder Detroit, you know right away it's a Detroit by it's sound.

In the mid 80's I learned how to drive truck driving an Astro , 318 Detroit with 10 speed. The advice I was given on how drive the Detroit was to drive it like I stole it. I still remember the 2 stage Jake brake. Yes 2 stage not 3. It was 4 cylinder for low all 8 cylinders was high. I was told to leave it in high. It was a slug pulling a hill but it burned up the pavement on level ground. Still driving truck after all these years.

My dad owned 2 GMC Brigadier tractors, and his white GMC Brigadier had this same engine, minus the straight pipes. His blue GMC Brigadier had a Cummins, and that Cummins was the only Cummins my dad ever owned. My dad’s owned a 6-71 Detroit, 2 6V71 Detroits, a 6V92 Detroit, and a Series 60 Detroit which he still owns. Recently purchased the Series 60, which is in a 2005 Freightliner Columbia single axle daycab tractor originally run by Penske as a rental until its subsequent sale on Baskin’s Truck Sales. A gentleman named Hank delivered the Freightliner, and my dad and I drove him to Williamsport Regional Airport where he departed from the old terminal.

That’s sweat! I watched until the end. I’ve been a CDL driver for 33 years. However I have a restriction on my class 1. I can only drive an automatic. Driving is just part of my job. I’m a power lineman for a living. The reason we have a class 1 is because some of our trailers weigh more than 10,000 pounds. Hence the class 1.
The other is my employer only has automatic trucks for us to drive. I personally never learned to drive a manual. I have been to 2 different driving schools to learn but I flunked out. I’m 6’8” tall & the steering wheel is just over my legs. If I was to lift my leg to move it to the clutch pedal there isn’t any room for my knee to go up. I’m literally squished in the cab. The instructor wanted me to push the clutch pedal down with the bottom of my foot to feel the gears meshing? I had to open the drivers door to get that sensation. The instructor told me to close the door. I could only push the clutch down with the side of my boot. Not the bottom. The other is I have Dyspraxia, Dyslexia & Autism. I have yet to master swimming. That requires bi-lateral co-ordination just like driving a stick truck. So I have a physical limitation & 2 mental limitations. I don’t fit in any cars so all I fit in is custom fabricated Suburbans & Avalanches. The seats were removed & the seat pedestal removed & cut 3” in height & moved back 4”. While still using the same bolt pattern in the floor.
Any possible insight on how I might be able to learn a manual transmission or am I screwed?

Brings back fond memories of a few years back I was in the fire department and we had a Brigadier tanker gave go us by Eastman and it had the 2 speed in it also... She didn't go a mile over 73mph no matter how hard we pushed her... She would bounce you all around in that seat also...lol... Nice seeing this brought back good memories.
