for thousands of years Indian culture was not conservative. it is the birthplace of yoga and Kamasutra. lots of ancient Indian temples with number of adult statues. in all other ancient civilizations only men were educated. in ancient India both men and women were educated. then India was under Islamic and British rule for 800 years who were very conservative at that time and made India more conservative than them.

@@timeisup6844 what are you talking about? Lols. Removing triple talak, a man can divorce a woman by saying talaak three times, is removing that being conservatives. Having uniform civil code in school irrespective of religion being conservative. And regarding places. Yes, it's true there are places in India which are unsafe. Nothing to do with the government but culture in that particular region. I live in Mumbai. I have seen women travel at late night trains without sweat. Again there will be places where one v should avoid. Forget about women even men. And this is true everywhere. I was in Stockholm-Sweden. In some places, you will see large black men roaming and asking for money even at 8 pm. Yes, 8 pm in metro stations like ksita. Spain, two out of three of my friends lost their belongings because of theft. When we tried to reach local police authorities, they advised against filing a complaint. They made it really tough for us and asked us to visit places instead of reporting this complaint officially.. France, huge black man will come and tie threads then ask for money. I didn't feel safe at all. You might think my comments are racist. But nothing to do with colour. This is what I saw and felt. So there will be places which are not safe even in developed countries. Sundsval another place in Sweden, I saw ppl taking drugs. I almost had to run the other way when they approached. This is like seven in the evening. Also note, in winter it gets dark pretty soon. Even at three pm in the afternoon.

I went to Hyderabad, Kerala and Goa with two of my friends, so 3 ladies, 2 blondes and a red head. We didn't get any hostility but lots of attention which was sometimes quite overwhelming. We were even safeguarded by a bartender once to "protect" us from the male customers (who were talking no notice of us) but it was nice to know we were being looked after. We also covered up well because there was too much attention sometimes. Thanks guys, love your videos, off to Thailand with our baby tomorrow 😬😁

Canadian Indian here. Thank you for starting such an important and long-overdue conversation about perceptions vs realities around India, and for framing it in a very nuanced and sensitive way.
    In my experience:
    - North Indian culture tends to be more culturally conservative than South Indian cultures
    - rural communities tend to be more conservative than urban communities (with notable exceptions)
    - Indians with exposure to Western culture (usually the wealthy or well-traveled) can be different in their body language and cultural expectations/behaviors with respect to foreign tourists than those with less exposure
    - older generations can be more traditional while younger Indians may have a more relaxed attitude towards women showing skin, foreigners and public displays of affection
And yes, it will take a while for perceptions to catch up to reality in the media. Thank you for being a part of the change.

I have been in India for almost 2 months, solo traveller female (short hair/soft butch lesbian), Indo-chinese from NZ. I am blessed to have friends in most places, however, travelled solo for a bit. I don't completely drop my guard but I'm with you, Indian people are so welcoming and I am falling in love with her a little bit more. It was a surprise to be told Mumbai is safe and I actually tested it out, walking to a restaurant alone at night. In Mumbai, I had an interesting convo with one of my dorm mates, an Indian guy, about the stories we hear in the western world about women's safety and he was offended.
In regards to clothing, metro security was fun because I had tell them, yes I belong in the ladies line. Another thing is I have tattoos on my arms and covered them up out of respect. I have found also that if you are welcoming and respectful, the whole interaction with locals changes. Even with my friend's extended family, they were very receptive to this and actually said, I am so nice and down to earth, unlike experiences with other foreigners.

However, even though my wife feels comfortable here by herself, she doesn't wear revealing clothes. Even at the beach she prefers wearing a swim suit rather than a bikini.. I think in the end it's up to each person how comfortable they feel revealing skin, i've seen the whole spectrum here in Varkala. Before Varkala, we spent a month in Dharamsala. As an Indian living 30yrs of my life in India and being in London now. I can totally understand how overwhelming it can get for foreign tourists. But it’s not a dangerous place if one is being careful. Avoiding revealing cloths for women could be one, coz people do stare, if you are not used to it, it’s best to avoid it. Creeps are every where and India is no exception. But you know who is a creep and how to get out of it if you are careful.
For single women travellers I would suggest airbnbs for stays and only with superhosts. And avoid travelling alone late at night. 😊

See, India is a huge country with utmost diversity. India has an Urban face as well as a Rural face. In urban areas people are too advanced, you can wear whatever you want, no one cares. Where as in Rural area people aren't much in sync with advancement, so they never prefer modern clothes.
It depends where you travel in India. But the way India is developing, after 30 years, the whole country would be under 100% urbanization. India will be a lot developed and the talks about clothes would be a mtter of past.
Remember, India is just 75 yrs old and has already achieved so many highs in its growth, development and urbanization.

I’ll definitely be covering up as I don’t want to draw unnecessary attention, just because of my choice of clothing, it’s a respect for other peoples cultures I think. I don’t generally wear revealing clothing anyway, so I don’t need to go out of my way to change my wardrobe just for travel :)

Use Ola or Uber for cab services. And Avoid visiting old cities like Old Delhi, Agra and Varanasi. Instead visit the newly made cities like AeroCity in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, pune , Thane Etc. south India has lot to explore and if travel can be planned precisely then its easy and safe for solo Female Travellers to travel in India. And in Big tourist places Foreigners often get unwanted starred and selfie request because the people who Gomes from rural India they get surprised to see foreigners. But it's not something dangerous just basic human curiosity just avoid it. Otherwise it's great to explore India. Thank you for being honest and frank 😊 It's a very important conversation to have and i admire that you have started it and hopefully lot many visitors to India will be informed. You were absolutely bang on with your views. Lot of India (esp South India) is pretty much safe. But places like New Delhi, Western Uttar Pradesh and Gurgaon can be unsafe and intimidating for foreigners. But Western India (Mumbai, Gujarat, Pune), Eastern India (Calcutta, Orissa, Assam, Other states in North East) and South India is very much safe and comfortable for families to travel. But yes, regarding the dresses for women you are right, but we are not like Middle East countries, Iran and Pakistan where it is very conservative. I appreciate the kind of insight and tips you provided despite your short stay...I would like to emphasis on a few points:
    1. Generally in India hotels with basic amenities and safety is priced upwards of 3000 INR ( roughly 40USD) and as domestic travellers we generally prefer that. Also one has to do a little bit of research while choosing the hotel location. Theres are some places in the big cities which are bit shady and we Indians also avoid. The same is true for big european cities. During my solo trip to paris I was careful about choosing my hotel location.
    2. In India mobile internet is very cheap...1.5 gb per day package will cost u 2-4 USD for 4 weeks...so my recommendation would be get a local sim card from the airport and also different popular apps for various purposes.
    3. As in everywhere in India also,' you get what you paid for ' stands true...so avoid cheap unhygenic places for eating...rest u will be fine...

Just avoid very secluded places where taxi and busses won’t go. Go to places where there is a good amount of crowd and visitors. About the covering yourself part, I would say Indians especially people from smaller town who are in bigger cities for work, less educated are not used to seeing too much skin in real, so they might stare , or give more attention than usual. But posh cities , localities you may wear whatever you want. Also places like temples are suggested with clothes that cover properly. Rest is all perspective.

So the thing is you can wear whatever you want to wear in the main city area. But when it comes to villages and backward areas people are not used to see others in short dresses so they naturally gets attracted unknowingly and you may felt uncomfortable.

Hi guys, i'm a recent subscriber loved your video on Amritsar. If you ever travel to Punjab again there is a huge celebration called Holla Maholla. It coincides with Holi but it is safe, very crowded though. This celebration showcases the martial arts skills of the Sikh warriors and it's a spiritual event. It happens at Anandpur Sahib. which is arguably even more important to Sikhs than Harmandir Sahib (aka the golden temple) even though both are really sacred to us because this is where Sikhi was officially formalised with the birth of Khalsa. Also in Anandpur Sahib there is an impressive museum that explains a lot about the Sikhs and the culture of Punjab called The Ajooba.

Hello guys I loves your whole india trip and it was wonderful to see your little cute family enjoying😊😊 s
Now I am telling my opinion on what you guys have talked and asked us
On what to wear is depends on where your going or visting if your are going to Temples, Majid or any other religious place you should try to wear indian clothes which covers all the area which needs to cover to be respectful and after that you are free to wear whatever you want in whole india and as per bikini and all that you can wear those in beaches like in Goa, lakshadweep and
2 - why indian mens tries to avoid talking to women's (tourist) with a men is because they don't want you to feel uncomfortable so they prefer talking to men because its easier of us to talk to them 😅😅 and we are even try to avoid talking to girls from our own country unless they starts the conversation because we don't how other person thinks😅😅

I have lived in Delhi for around 1.5 years and travelled around for 3 months twice at a time. I would say l felt safer in India than in the UK. However you will sometimes get scammed or over charged as an obvious foreigner, on the flip side as an obvious foreigner who will get more friendly attention, free food etc. When it was known l was foreigner l had people offering me free lifts, paying for my transport, paying for food and one guy worried for safety for no reason, waited to see l got on the right bus ok.
With regards to womens safety per capita crimes are lot less than in the west but absolute numbers higher but there is less reporting, but alot more headline news coverage of crimes against women in India itself versus the UK where only a few stories make the headlines, it really does vary from place to place, NE India, East and South India are generally safe. But NW India, UP, Bihar, Central India l would say you need to be cautious especially in the evenings. I just think unfortunately there is a mindset of some males, not most, but more prevalent in those areas or people from those areas who have a more regressive mindset. So in a nutshell is it safe or not safe for women travelling alone, l would say it depends where your going but if going to Delhi Agra or Jaipur for example just be on your guard and avoid extremely busy or quiet areas. Again it really varies in Delhi itself, South Delhi areas being more middle class and forward looking and open, or East Delhi being more conservative, traditional, small village mindsets. I am British born Indian Sikh. India generally does get a bad press, especially from the BBC, no idea why but reality is different. India is almost the world in one country, variety of people, variety of landscapes, mindsets etc

It is wonderful that you felt good about your travel to India. Few things you have to remember about India is that it functions at different time zones, some are still very conservative or ancient in their minds too. Maybe they will not be hostile towards you but you might get more inquisitiveness from them which may be overwhelming. There is no need to cover all your body in India. At least not in my side the North East India and the South too is safe in that regard. So no problem if you wear your choice of clothes. Cover yourself only in Muslim areas because they have a certain tendency towards non-hijabi women. Period. Otherwise the whole of India is welcoming to all of you. Come covered or come uncovered, India will welcome you anyway.

  • @AdityaSingh-bi3nw
    @AdityaSingh-bi3nw ปีที่แล้ว

Good point. Need to add some key or important ones:
. You can wear anything in India. People advice to cover yourself because of the glare or the extra stares you get coz of that. You can wear your comfy dress in modern city but yeah I would also advice to cover yourself in small places or cities.
. As for fun and enjoyment, you can definitely enjoy as much as you can but as a tourist, you have to be on some alert coz obviously you’re on different country and people jus get way too much excited on festivals not all jus 0.0001%. But STAY ALERT, ENJOY!
. For the internet, it’s really easy and cheap now a days, just buy a sim card and top up like 30-50gb at the beginning with you already gettin 1.5 or 2gb per day pack. Like this you’ll always have some when you run out of data in any case.

Regarding the clothes, I feel you were kind of right. I disagree on being respectful part. It ultimately is your choice and what you feel comfortable in. Obviously there are places and neighborhood where you wouldn't want to be showing too much skin but mostly it is to avoid the creepy stares and comments which I'm sure wouldn't happen with Lawrence around. :) But yes on a serious note, what you wear or don't wear doesn't have anything to do with disrespecting our culture. It's just that there will be creeps in certain places which you should avoid. Hope you come back soon and have an even better experience. The more you come here the more this you will love it. It's all about familiarity.

The best thing is if any foreigner wants to travel India i think he or she should have a very good Indian friend in their country who lived in India for at least 10-12 years or coming to India at least 1 time in every 1 or 2 years so he or she knows well about current India and it's situations and knows the places and cultures well then come with them or let them arrange your trip that their family or friends will help you or join you to travel India.. But if you wanna come alone at least spend money to have a good tour guide or reputed travel agency so they can arrange everything and make your trip safe and comfortable.
The best palaces if you don't like too much chaos and want best and less populated area to visit in India here are some places or states to visit-
    1. Andaman(Mind blowing Sea beaches, In the ongoing season there are much more tourists than normal seasons)
    2. Laksa deep(Out standing world class sea beaches)
    3. North East specially Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh(pure nature, waterfalls and mountains, great weather, But rainfall is very high)
4.Banglore,Mumbai,Pune,Kolkata(metropolitan cities and obviously crowded 😁)
    5. Goa(sea beaches, food, western vibes, too many foreign tourists)
    6. Pondicherry(French vibes)
    7. Jammu kashmir,Himachal,Uttarakhand,
Sikkim and also Darjeeling in West Bengal,(Mountains, nature, snow)
These are my favourites.. Obviously there are hundreds of more best places to visit in India but remember you have to come in the best season)🙏🏻❤️

13:58 the reason people don't talk to the woman in presence of her man is not to make the couple (especially the man) uncomfortable.
The man might feel that another guy is trying to hit on his girl before him. So, to avoid confusion and confrontation with strangers, people generally don't talk too much to opposite gender in front of their significant other.

I left India 30years ago, I have since gone back visited family primarily in North India. My 2 cents people generally are more mellow in the south and East India. In the north Rajasthan, Gujarat would be the most pleasant. In terms of attire for women spl western women make sure you don’t wear dresses which show to much of your chest or your rear. Jeans, shorts (not hot pants), tshirts work well. I found a dramatic difference in demeanor once you travel to MP and beyond towards the south. Good Luck !!

Im Indian I’m from Bangalore in the state of Karnataka.. this city is a very cosmopolitan city..
Things to remember when you are travelling in India:
    1. It is safe to travel around but at the same time very important to be well informed of the area you are going to:
    2. India is a mixed bag of cultures, so if you are going towards a mosque or a temple then you must understand that these places will be crowded and there will be people from all walks of life.. so if you are in a crowded area if there is one bad element in a crowd of 1000s then no one can really control that. So safe to keep your cash and phone where you can see it, having a male traveller along with you who is vigilant and watching or allowing the woman to walk ahead of him would help.. so that no one can catch a feel.. these things make ppl most uncomfortable so best to avoid very very crowded areas, see pictures on Instagram or Google before heading to a public/historic places.
    3. Wearing Indian wear is not important in every place honestly even Indians aren’t so covered up nowadays. We all wear what we want but like you said dress based on the place you are visiting.
You will find women wearing bikinis and swim wear only in some beaches in Karnataka, Goa and Kerala. The other beaches are mostly people fully clothed. Even in Pondicherry I wore shorts and I felt out of place because I was there early morning and it was a place to wear pants (promenade beach)
    4. When you want to go for a drink go to a good bar or pub in the neighbourhood because if you go to the local joints you might have an experience and you never know with the baby and a woman. It won’t be bad but there are modern places in every city which one can go to with the women, there will be more girls out and about on their own. Do your research ask someone.
    5. Yeah it’s better not to hug unless you know someone. I mean it’s not the best thing to do anyways considering our experiences after covid.
    6. Eat good food in good restaurants and eat cooked foods to avoid any stomach bugs. If you are having something with ice and having a salad eat in a clean place. All the known places will usually have a mixed crowd and food will be made available on all price ranges. Go with your gut feeling. Eat where you feel safe.
    7. Use public transport or Uber or Ola apps are the best to travel.
    8. Hotels all the star 4-5 stars would be the best but if you are looking at 3 star you will only get the standard you have agreed to pay for. Same with hostels. There will be some places which other travellers or foreigners would have stayed at take their advice. We usually stay at a 4-5 star ourselves.

Great video - Adding some inputs as an Indian who has lived in UK and currently in Germany - India is a huge country. There are many states and many many places to cover and many many things to see, experience and of course to eat :) - A life time would not be enough. That being said the Generalization is that India is unsafe for Women is incorrect. This is more like going to Eastham in London and complaining that entire London in safe. There are 28 states in India and 8 UTs - To give a perspective my state Tamil Nadu is more than 1/3rd the size of Germany. There are many many places in India where it is possible for women to travel alone and enjoy the beauty of India. You have been to Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Mumbai , Kolkata ? Congrats you have covered .01 % of India. And regarding sensory overload - There are awesome quiet places there too :) - Always make sensible choices, Stay in decent places check with the locals and be aware of your surroundings. Regarding scamming - This is common as an Indian I have been scammed too :)

Love you both for representing our culture, I agree there might be some loopholes but once you will interact with people everything will seems easy, regarding dress - if you want to experience foreign culture visit Goa,there you can be any dress you want, in North most cities people are modern with dress so you can wear anything but prefer Indian clothes because it would fit you accordingly, in South , east, west same for cites but again prefer Indian clothes, and be open to take suggestions from local guide, eat Indian cuisine, enjoy and visit every part of country because this is land of cultures, food, saints ,temples, rich history and ultimate fun.
