Very Cool video, Thanks Juan. It's very hard to get Metallics across on a video that's already reflecting everything everywhere, but you've done a great job explaining it all.
This video was a great motivator to keep on using true metallics, every video and artist you see nowadays pushes NMM and it’s a technique I want to learn but don’t want to feel I HAVE to learn in order to achieve a high quality show piece if that makes sense. Thank you for this video sir!
I think that's the thing. NMN is an incredible technique for learning shading, but I find it is far easier to get an incredible result by taking a true metallic and shading it down. I do delight walking by games workshop display cases for that reason; is often very simplistic schemes but it actually shows nice a simple scheme can look.
Thanks Juan. I don't have the patience for NMM, especially since I just don't understand where to place the highlights. TMM painted light this is a great guideline because the initial coat tells me where the highlights need to go. Maybe practicing this enough will give me an intuitive understanding of where the highlights on NMM should go as well
Thanks for the video. I have struggled a lot with metalics. To me, my first coat always seemed like they were too thick, but this showed me that it was the result of not having darker sections and highlights. I'll do some practice on swords before tacking my lord solar.
I got curious painting one of my minitures up and used my Vallejo express line over my iron armour. I used black lotus specifically with the medium added, I think it was like 3 to 4 drops of medium. It gave this really nice blue tinge to the armour. I wanted to do nmm on him but I'm still a newbie to all that stuff and don't have all the paints still. The effects you can get with metallic paints looks great if you just put that tiny bit extra in.
JUAN!!!! I needed this today. I'm working on a Celestial Lions chapter for my Space Marines (gold armour). I was struggling with how to highlight and shade my already epic mid-tone of gold. I'm glad I watched this before trying a different approach I was 80% settled on. Needless to say, this is the effect I was after but unsure of the technique. Thank you for sharing your talent and being an inspiration!
I'll be honest and didn't think I would learn anything new from this video...how wrong was I LOL. Amazing work as always Juan and the use of VGC is very interesting as I've recently invested in the whole GC range. 👏👌👍😎
Very helpful video! Can you comment on how you thin your metallic paints to get the correct consistency? I use mostly Vallejo Game Color and GW metallics thinned with water. If I don't thin them enough I get an unwanted texture but if I thin them too much they run into unwanted areas. Do you thin with water or something else?
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Very interesting. Always heard bad things about thinning metallics with water, but never really experimented with it myself. I will be trying this myself later today! Thank you
I didn't understand about painting the back "With the opposite direction". So do you basically turn the model 180 degrees, or is it more like 90 degrees? So basically your highlight was front left of the model and now it needs to back but on the same side of the model? I.e. right shoulder is always closer to the highlight? I don't get it.
Apparently the model color metallics are all new and all vastly improved. The Game Color ones were reused from the old Model Air range and some are good and some a bit iffy. Super excited to get them.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures What I want is just scale75 levels of metal color variety, vallejo model air colors. Or at the very least, just a retributor armor/dwarvish gold with that same insane coverage and thinness. A sensible US distributor would also be nice: Go see how many US stores that carry the Vallejo range have Squid Pink in stock. I end up having to go back home across the atlantic to stock up!
Awesome! It's so hard to find good actionable advice for levelling up TMMs. Everyone is hype about airbrushing and NMMs and such. Someone help me make my leadbelcher look better! xD
If you wanted to substitute standard paints for contrast paints should you glaze a darker brown for the shadows? Or would you get a better result from mixing a dark brown into your mid tone metallic paints?
would you mind doing a review on the vallejo pro modeler brushes? i've heard good stuff about them, but you're one i actually trust when it comes to vallejo
Hi Juan, that armour turned out resplendent! Quick question: Is the Game Color Silver you mentioned just easier to control than for example model air silver?
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures So, this, I take it means you are using the new game colors forumlation. I never found the old game colors metallics to be anything special.
Me encantaría verte como avatar de la marca Vallejo. Los que somos fieles a la marca agradeceríamos más recetas Xpress igual como hacías con las contrast. Gracias por el contenido. Un abrazo. Avisa si vienes a Munich.
I think for this particular mini i would've swapped the gem and the cloak colours. I'm not sure if it's finished but the cloak just doesn't work with the scheme imo
Green is the worst colour because it wants to be blue or yellow but can't make his mind up. 😂 Jokes aside, if you want to fall in love with blue, you need to get some pure pigment blues and start with those! Manufacturers add too much other pigments in the background of most miniature paints which makes them difficult to highlight, mix, shade

I need to admit something, I dont hate blue, sorry Juan
Blue is the most beautiful color ever! 😛
I love blue, too. And I even have Juan to thank for the tip on doing a 1:1 mix of Talassar and Ultramarine Blue Contrast paints for my Ultramarines.
Very Cool video, Thanks Juan. It's very hard to get Metallics across on a video that's already reflecting everything everywhere, but you've done a great job explaining it all.

Brilliant video. Vallejo metallics are so good. I'm definitely giving this method a go soon. Thanks Juan.

That came out really nice. Thanks, Juan
Thank you for Pronouncing - Vallejo properly. Oh yeah and for the video.
It's easy when you are actually Spanish 😂
Brutal como siempre! A mi también me encanta usar black lotus como glaze, ojalá aprenda a dominarla ni la mitad que tú.Y felicidades por los 100k!!!
Gracias!!
Juan, I learned so much from this video, thank you!

Ahh I need to get a some new brushes for Metallics. Awesome work !!
Thanks
That Black Lotus is a very nice blue black, I'll have to pick some up if the local stores start stocking it.
It's fantastic

I use just water, if your paint is running everywhere you need to load your brush less but you are also thinning too much
Gran video!. Otro que guardo en mi colección para cuando necesite volverlo a ver para pintar metálicos.
Gracias guapo 😘
Waow this tmm is wonderful. But the skin is also AMAZING any chance to see a video on it?
The skin video is currently in my Patreon
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures OK I will check that thank you
What are you using to thin your metallics for the "glazing"?
Water

Gracias!!
Yay 🎉 TMM! Do you use your Raphael brushes with these?
Yes
Thanks, this gives me courage to use my expensive brushes for the sake of art! 🖼️
@yaelagulto9746 I use kolinsky brushes for everything. It might be stupid but that's how I roll
Behold, the Godemperah of contrast has become the King of Metallics.
OH YEAH!!
As always , beautifull 👍
You got a recipe on that red cape??
If you wanted to substitute standard paints for contrast paints should you glaze a darker brown for the shadows? Or would you get a better result from mixing a dark brown into your mid tone metallic paints?
Y would mix it in
would you mind doing a review on the vallejo pro modeler brushes? i've heard good stuff about them, but you're one i actually trust when it comes to vallejo
I have them, they are alright specially for the price. I find them good workhorses for 90% of the work you have to do.
What (Xpress) colour would you use to shade gold?
Mahogany first, then willow bark
el resultado es increible
What model are you painting?
I think it's Sekhar, Fang of Nulahmia, which unfortunately isn't available by itself.
Nevermind it totally is available by itself, I don't know where I got that idea.
What is it exactly that you have against blue?!
Hi Juan, that armour turned out resplendent!
Quick question: Is the Game Color Silver you mentioned just easier to control than for example model air silver?
It's the same paint
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Cheers, that's great news!
@rhag1394 they ran out of time and decided to use the Model Air range for the Game Color metallics.

Lol it's weird seeing my name up there 😂
TMM looks so much better than brown or grey NMM that people tell you is gold or silver.
