With the speedpaint metallics I've had great success with putting them over one layer of Vallejo metal colour aluminium. Instead of the white coming through you get that nice silver metallic highlight. Looks particularly good with blueish tinted enchanted steel or the green tinted aztec gold.
@trovarion it was a question for lester on what vallejo aluminum he used if it was white or dull alluminium. I don't have silver in my paint inventory and have considered using aluminum.
Nice review. I really appreciate how you take the time to research these things. It demonstrates a level of professionalism not shown by many other content creators. Also, i know it wasn't the topic of your video, but damn your leather effect looks amazing!
My favourite metal colours are the Green Stuff World Chrome series metal paints, especially antique gold. Those colours really look like solid gold, they almost have a mirror finish and have extreme coverage. Their true metal look makes them stand out a bit but depending on which effect you want to achieve, they are perfect. On my Saurus Warriors they make all the gold components shine bright like real gold. I only use a pin wash into the recesses and thats it, the reflections and the shine comes from the light and the surroundings, like real gold would.
@@KevinoftheCosmos definately do a test model first and protect the Gold layer with a gloss varnish, because it easily catches finger prints and can be scratched.
I can give you one advice for speedpaint metallics. Apply polished silver as base and once dry apply Sand golem with 50/50 mix with speedpaint medium. You'll get a great brass colour.
Pragmatically, I’ve found two really good uses for these metals: 1. The Broadsword Silver over black makes a perfect and quick way to paint metallic tank tracks. 2. They’re useful for things like Chaos Marines if you’re priming white and don’t want to have to base all the metal trim bits before using regular metallics on them. I haven’t noticed the separation issues you have, let alone the paint almost fighting being re-mixed. Any chance it was a bad batch?
I love working with metallic paints. I think people get way too hung up on NMM, but a well done true metallic piece is, in my opinion, vastly superior to an equally well done NMM. I should also mention a bad NMM job looks REALLY bad.
I agree. And honestly even top tier NMM is wierd looking to me. It looks out of place to me. I am a fan of more grimdark style and NMM breaks the immersion for me. Even when done well it looks like really good NMM paint job not authentic.
@@manga3040 I think it also kinda depends on what you're painting. NMM works very well for a bust or collection piece with very specific lighting and composition and even possibly a background, where you essentially have one set viewing angle. For a gaming piece - no matter how much or little effort you put into it - true metallics just look better. You view these pieces from all possible angles, and while NMM CAN work okay for this if it's extremely well-executed, it usually just doesn't.
This is absolutely fantastic review of a paint bottles. Very in-depth, especially with a background and huge skill level of Trov. I wish all paint reviews were this deep from such skilled masters.
I got the recent new set of the Army painter ones, the metallics are insanely good. I dont think ive ever enjoyed painting and airbrushing with metals as much as these ones, i was genuinely surprised at how well they cover and how "deep" the colors are with a single layer. However...I did also have mixing issues with a few of the colors, where they're almost like runny inks with flakes more than "metal" colors.
Good comprehensive review of interesting hobby products that were sent to you...I have an older Army Painter metallic and still use it to this day(wish I could say the same about the old acrylics), not sure I'll find a use for the speed metallics but the rest of their product line look sound. Thanks again for the review! 🙇
The new Vallejo model color is genuinely amazing. I find it very much on par with AK 3rd gen, if not better with lighter colors. I've been really struggling to find metallic paints that I like. Ak 3rd gen is what I've gone back to because it's just easy to control with a good finish. I may end up trying fanatic metallics because speedpaint metallics are so runny that I find them really tough to control
my current approach is using vallejo silver from new range and then speedpaints to change it into real metal. I use lots of bronze and Brownish decay is great. For steel I use usually Runic grey. Sometimes I use some extremly dark colors for wrought iron look
I am glad to see that the "new" Tainted Gold is just as good as the "old" one; I was afraid they might drop the colour from the range (as they did with Night Scales, of which I bought some extra bottles) and that would have been a shame, as I use it a lot - I painted all the armour on Ionus Cryptborn's dragon with it and it looks great next to a deep red. It also takes well to a lot of different hues of washes like purple, green, black, brown, etc. Very versatile, just as you mention in the video!
Just got a selection of these paints, was going to try them over metalic bases such as silver so the highlights are metalic. Have zenithal primed a minature with black gloss primer and silver ink for the first try but haven't had chance to try it out yet.
I use a mix of 3:2 Hoard Bronze : Shining Silver to create a gorgeous and easy to use bronze / brass ish color that I just love. Hoard Bronze does indeed tend to separate quite badly in the bottle, so it has been giving my vortex mixer a good workout😂
Yeah it is! I couldn't get hold of my contacts at armypainter for a while, but they confirmed it after they watched the video. So it's really cool in a way to have a 1 layer product like that.
They asked me which colors I wanted to try and added some of their picks and put them in a 72 pieces carying case for me. As far as I know they don't have full sets available yet, no.
I could have done with this video a couple of weeks ago when I was desperately searching for decent workhorse metallics 🤣 But, I got a set of fanatic metallics and have not been disappointed! Although now I need to get tainted gold and mithril because those aren't in the core set. Great video as always
This is very interesting. Most other content creators who talked about the emtallics seemed to prefer the speedpaints over the new Fanatics ones. I wonder if something was off with your batch of paint.
I just wish that now Vallejo has reformulated their Game Colour, Game Air and Model Colour, they will think very hard about extending the Metal Colour range to have more golds, coppers, bronze and brass. Maybe even some coloured metallics.
Awesome video and great to see some versatility in these paints that I wouldn't otherwise have much interest in! I might have missed this in the video but are the paints that you are using for shades (your Burnt Umber, Dark Sienna etc.) oils or acrylics?

I didn't have the same issues with hoard bronze or enchanted steel. I'm wondering if the bottles may have hit a temperature extreme. I've had similar issues crop up with contrast paints, but only ones that went through the mail in winter and likely froze at some point.
I wonder if you could get a good grimdark look by treating the speedpaints like a glaze and build them up in thin layers over a black base coat. Maybe even using a sponge like in the space marine videos. Really not sure because i haven't used speed paints or contrast paints much.
Lol it's awesome you get swnd paints. I have 2x tried to order the new vallejo game Color range but both got canceled. Local shops don't want to buy it they want to sell what they have in stock😢
I've been using their Enchanted Steel speedpaint for basic blades when I'm feeling lazy, and it's really easy to use and the colour is really nice, I wonder if you got a bad batch?
I'm a bit concerned about the safety introductions on the back of Vallejo metallic range. What's your take on this? Do you use a respirator while working with them?
I have the feeling that even if you had painted these minis with a rock and the cheapest paint from the hardware store, you would be able to make them look good. The problem with Army Painter is the consistency of their products from batch to batch. They can change their recipes and rebrand their product all they want.
