I like this black quite a lot. Its got great volumetrics and doesnt feel quite as busy with all the secondary reflections as some of the more chrome nmms look. To be this reads like glossy black paint at scale, rather than a mirror or polished chrome effect. Very nice I also really appreciate that you made a paint plan with 5 paints, but it clearly works with any 3 paints and 50/50 mixes as well, so it could be used for really interesting color shift styles or schemes like Dark Angeos that have a very specific black to green highlight. A great video
This is awesome and makes me feel much more confident in tackling NMM. One thing I would like to see (in another video perhaps?) is how you would then tackle the highlight placement from the back view once your primary viewing angle is finished. It’s probably really simple, but something I struggle with for sure!
I'm planning a video on that but it's very simple, I just reverse the light source. So the main source of light for the back would be directly opposite to the one for the front
I have always been put off doing this style. But I have always loved watching you make it look ridiculously easy 😂 But this one I have found super useful as I am doing the fantastic Horus Ascended model from Forgeworld and I wanted the Serpents Scales to really pop on this model. So I have just completed over the last 2 days the gatgantuan mission of completing his armor and man, does it pop! Cheers Juan for another fantastic video, expertly described 👌👏👏
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures it will be when finished! But so happy with this way of doing black armor, as it really is not as hard as I always thought it was. And is visually impressive.
These are just about the exact colors I've been using for my Black Templars, but I've been using a lot of drybrushing and layering. Might actually give NMM a shot with them after seeing this!
Hi Juan, what Vallejo colours would you recommend as close substitutes for these ones? I happen to have mostly Vallejo, so I would rather try to use them instead of buying new ones. I still probalby go for xpress paints, but I might try this technique too.
I can't say anything different from what others have said, but it is a great intro NMM technique. The step-by-step process is great. It's also very timely because I'm planning to paint a new army with black armor. I planned to do a black with blue/gray highlights, so I assume I would follow the same technique but substitute the grays with gray/blue paints.....?
A really fascinating technique, an amazing paintjob and a really great how-to video aswell. Might be me: The black NMM reads more as a dark steel though.
Buenas Juan, ¿qué colores de la nueva Game Color de Vallejo utilizarías para el mismo efecto? (Which colors of the new Vallejo Game Color range can be used?)
Buenas! He visto tus videos en los que se requiere zero skill y me parecen geniales, el problema es que tengo -1000 skill y cuando he intentado hacer algo similar a lo que tu haces me ha salido un desastre 😂. En fin, seguiré intentandolo.
hi juan, its me from the masterclass in tallagh, im using this video as a guide to paint my stealth suits for NNM. clean sketch with a wide range of contrasts, stick to it and be precise with the brush work and colors
Very cool techniques! Often i find myself struggling with NMM now only in certain areas where it is not so easy or clear how it should look. Leg, very easy - light goes down the leg, on the knee, on the foot, looks great. Arm, very easy, shoulder very easy. OK now he has big, flat, slightly round chest plate. Hm. Or maybe he has a big intricate moulded eagle on his shoulder. Tiny little fearhers where i just have no room to blend.
The trick for small details is you don't have to blend. As long as the contrast is right, it doesn't matter. In fact, most of the times a rougher transition looks more realistic
I cant believe that I managed to do this on my own 😂 I used more blue colors on the black and it looks pretty good. Thank you for the video. Is there a video on the theory of this? Like hat are counter refelctions and where to put them?
Counter reflections as the name goes are counter to the main source of light. It's as simple as that But I will make a video going through all the theory
Another great tutorial. It looks great! Got a quick question. Even though it a NMM, could you apply a similar method to getting good blend and transitions for regular colours? Also, my thousand sons and I greatly anticipate the upcoming no skill blue.
As usual just perfect, I'm so inspired after this video to try! Maybe you could extend this series to more colours, like Red, and (sorry for this) Blue, at least showing paints and result, or maybe one or two recipes for gold and steel Though many tutorials often said generic "warm grey" and so on, to not focus on exact paints, as a partially colourblind person who struggle with exact shades, I found knowing exact paints combinations one of the most valuable information to have for the best result, for example your plasma gun video with different color schemes but the same technique was so good. Also thanks for your necron blades video, it was the best tutorial explanation on TH-cam on the topic, I'm so proud by my Void Dragon blade and tail
Ok im going to try nmm after watching this and a few other of your nmm tutorials. Im a newbie and only painted like 14minis but i want to push myself early and learn

Indeed, if you want a lighter tone, just make your initial highlight bigger and boom, steel
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures would love to see a video on doing brown armour In a Satin/semi NMM and not getting it to look like bronze/gold
@Jurvin64 extremely difficult as bronze is basically metallic brown. It's going to either look like bronze or copper

All the colours, this is how the top tier bist painters paint their busts.

Exactly! Just use blue greys instead of warm greys. Something like Incubi Darkness, Thunderhawk Blue, Fenrisian Grey for example
Fenrisian Grey works really well, I work up from black -> Dark Reaper -> Fenrisian Grey@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures

Black Metal looks like that, it's the nature of metal.
It's a difficult balance between it looking metallic and looking black.

Yes, this is just a particular application of a general technique. I learnt this from large scale and bust painters,
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures do you find this technique harder to pull off on miniatures?
@trekbrooker2692 a bit because the space is smaller but it's also much easier than glazing for example

Brown Melissa Clark James Lewis Jason
thats some serious black dude
The hard part for most people is the blending and brush control
Blending is easy with this technique, for brush control, that's something I can't help you with, you have to develop that yourself
Johnson Jason Clark Kimberly Lewis Mary

To make it look more like black, shrink the highlight areas. You can make it look less glossy by not painting as brightly with the color palate with highlights.
That should get you the black effect you’re looking for without making it look like titanium.
That is how black gleams in the light though
