With a new 3D Mario game on the horizon with Super Mario Odyssey, I decided to play EVERY 3D Mario game in a marathon. Here are my thoughts comparing the first three 3D Mario Games (64, Sunshine, and Galaxy).

Yeah, so everybody is satisfied. Including me! Played Sunshine and Galaxy when I was younger and they are really really good. How does 64 hold up today? (Take away the nostalgia factor)
Dylan Hampton This will be my first time playing sunshine and the first galaxy, i'm super excited! In my opinion, 64 holds up well. Im surprised there's people not happy with the collection solely because it doesn't have Galaxy 2, although I guess you can't please everyone.

I feel that way about Sunshine, yet its the one I played the least. Nostalgia from my teenage years. Out of the 3 series talked about here, I've only 100%'d Galaxy 1 & 2.
So "Super Mario Space Odyssey" would be the next natural progression for this series

I remember once spending an hour in the dock level in Sunshine just surfing around with the turbo nozzle. I really wish they used it more in actual gameplay; it's not even required to beat the game.
MrHatoi You only use it to access one secret area, one blue coin and for a challenge at the Delfino Airstrip near the end.
Yeah I know; and none of those are actually necessary unless you're doing a 100% run of the game.
That's why sunshine needs an HD remake adding new areas to the game exetra

Yeah I remember thinking we should have gotten Sunshine 3DS as a successor to 64ds, although blue coins would need to be kept tracked of by the game itself. Turbo Nozzle needs more use in the game's remake, maybe we'll get a 4th Nozzle as well much like Balloon Mario for 64 & New forms for Yoshi to take.

I really appreciate Sunshine. It's definitely the black sheep of the bunch, but in a good way. My favorite part about the game is that you're exploring an actual place where people live and you're never alone. You can basically see every other level from wherever you are on the island. There are NCP to talk to EVERYWHERE. Mario 64 and Galaxy are very lonely games. In Sunshine you can see how your actions affect the world around you. You slowly bring the island back to life. I was always excited to re-enter the hub world to see what changed after getting a shine sprite. Its awesome, and its unique to the game.

The camera seemed pretty ideal to me. You can move all around and in and out with the C stick, and press L to force the camera behind you even if it goes through a wall. Pressing Y lets you zoom in close while stationary like Super Mario 64 too.
my favorite thing about the thumbnail is how both mario and peach look pissed and rosalina looks like she hasn’t gotten her coffee yet.
When 3D all stars comes out in 2020: why pick one?
The better question is why omit Super Mario Galaxy part 2? Nintendo really makes perplexing decisions sometimes...

Brennan Martinez The Developers really hated working on Galaxy 2. They felt like they put everything they had into Galaxy 1 and they felt out of ideas. There are some interviews with the developers that really paint a grueling picture of the game, even though it is beloved by many fans,
BTW i figured out why yoshi acts strange in sunshine. its simple they are not actual yoshi's they are painted creatures made by shadow marios brush. the yoshi's on the island are extinct and where do you first find a yoshi? with shadow mario. the yoshi's also disintegrate in water like they are made of paint. they also share a trait with alot of the monsters in the game of being able to spit up more paint with weird properties (they spit up watercolor paint that creates platforms) and they change colors by eating different fruit (lots of watercolor paint can be made with fruit).
Huh I never thought of it that way but when you mention it... it actually makes 100% total sense.
everything else shadow mario paints is made to destroy mario, i find it highly unlikely that shadow mario would intentionally provide mario the tools necessary to complete his adventure, and if it was unintentional, then that’s just dumb.
this is a possible justification but i don’t think it’s a good one, just let yoshi swim in a game where water is the main focus pls.
Well each monster he created seems to have a mind of its own and acts at least vaguely like there actual counterparts depending how well he drew them, since the Yoshi was his most accurate drawing it stands that he accidentally made him friendly to Mario, He is still a kid so accidentally doing something dumb is completely normal.
especially because the paintbrush wasn't created to destroy, it was invented to create. Only because of Bowser Jr.'s "evil" intentions, the creatures were evil as well. Maybe Yoshi was a mistake? Maybe Yoshi was meant to be something different, after all (if I remember correctly) it was the first creature introduced with a spawnpoint. Maybe it was even created by E. Gadd himself to test his invention. Bowser Jr. was aware of Yoshi being good, trying to run away with the egg.
But hey, that's just a theory!

My favorites are the Galaxy games. I admit it's because of nostalgia. I was born in 1998 and I only played Sunshine on my friend's GC. My first experience with Mario 64 was on the DS. Galaxy was the first 3D Mario I 100%'d and to this day it is the most amazing. The music still brings tears to my eyes.

That, along with the more responsive motion controls compared to Wii, makes me believe Galaxy is the best of the three, the Switch essentially solved the biggest problem about Galaxy in my opinion, which made previously hated levels really enjoyable

Well, mainly. Galaxy also has hidden stars for most if not all galaxies. In these you plop in to a level you already beat, but instead of doing it the same way you did the first time, you run around the whole galaxy looking for a hidden star. Some hidden stars are just on top of mountains you have to climb, but others (like in freezeflame galaxy) are pretty hard
Some hidden stars I got on accident while getting the main ones, such as the one where you reach the peak of the mountain. I was trying to get to the Baron Brrr star

Sunshine is my absolute favorite, and there's a few things it does well that I didn't feel the others had a great grasp on:
1. The world actually feels like a world and not so much a level. You're jumping on things carried by cranes and across roof tops a lot more than on a floating brick. 64 aimed for this, but I feel it had some limitations about it, and many of Galaxy's levels didn't feel very grounded at all
2. For a platformer, you can usually find a lot of different ways to get to any one point. I've shaved so much time discovering easier routes to certain areas, and it's really fun looking for different ways than normal to get somewhere. 64 has this a little in some places, but it never feels quite so intentional
3. There's usually a reason for the different missions in each world, and it often even feels connected to one another. Especially in the Noki Bay stages. But even the flash flood plays a role in explaining why the red coins are the only missions left.
I feel like Sunshine is the only one that gives a setting that feels fairly real and lets you play around in that world and find new ways of doing things

Perfect. I completely agree. You didn’t mention that the controls are the best. Mario Sunshine just feels so good to play, to hold the controller and to control Mario. The F.L.U.D.D. Mechanic was awesome to add also.

It seemed like a lot of reasoning behind troubles, distastes, and negative critiquing as a whole for the games was stemmed from poor manipulation, yeah. Most game controls and mechanics (as long as they’re of SOME level of quality,) even if they feel janky or even unpredictable at first, can be learned.

Personally I like Galaxy the most. The sheer creativity they have trumps the other Marios. There's tons of stages each with new ideas and interesting mechanics.

64 was the oldest game and it revolutionized the game industry, but now the game doesn't really do much, 64 is just too easy, once you know where the star is, the challenge is practically nonexisten, platforming is very easy.
sunshine, just added the water thingy mecanic which isn't bad but it really didn't offer anything new, the water thing i felt it was just situational.
Galaxy to this day and specially galaxy 2 all have a much efficient set of chalenges through the stages, you need more precise jumping and timing, also while the star spin mechanic is just one mechanic, the many uses you can give to that mechanic is incredible

Two things.
One: The part in SM64 where you cannon into the wall to get the star. That star is called Blast Away the Wall. That's not really all that cryptic.
Two: When you play through Mario Galaxy the second time as Luigi he controls more slippery, making it more difficult, and he jumps higher allowing for shortcuts you can't take as Mario.
i 100% the with both Mario and luigi hoping i would get another character but i got a picture instead lol
"Blast Away The Wall" does leave you wondering just which wall ... and launching yourself out of a cannon at random walls until you find the right one. Not difficult, just a bit tedious.
Actually you play as Mario with Luigi's head. you can tell this by standing next to the npc Luigi.
Stratelier but that corner does look a bit suspicous. I don't think I would have figured it out, but I've seen a Blind LPer figure it out very quickly
The model may be Mario's body but he still jump higher.
And there are like three walls you can blast into from the level's one and only canon.

On another note I found out from another person recently who said they didn't know the snowmen in Mario 64 could die by circling them like the eyeball enemies. That blew my mind too that it wasn't a well known thing.
28:27 No doubt about it. It's still the only Mario game I have beaten 100% (And the Rom Hack Super Mario Star Road as of a couple days ago but that's not an official game of course)

4:05 actually you don’t need the rocket power up to reach Pianta village, if you use the huge jump boost from the tunnel and hover you can reach the shine star, then wall jump off the gate, then you can reach the pipe to the level, my younger self was very experimental

I feel like I’m the only one who had no problem with the watermelon festival. Sure it popped from time to time but it was actually my favorite shine in the game for some reason.
Didn’t really have a problem with it too. You just have to get it away from the Red Cataquacks.

For years, I wasn't able to beat it. A few days ago, I beat it in 1 try.
Mario Sunshine is the Twilight Princess or Skywatd Sword of Mario games, while Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy are the Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker of Mario games. All great games, but two get much more love than the other one, and sometimes they get too much love. I love all three games a lot, but Mario Sunshine is criticized a little too much.

Galaxy is definitely my favorite out of the trio. I don’t know what it is about it that I love, maybe the planet mechanics, the way you collect stars, the secrets, it’s magical
Sunshine is the best! I love how it connects to Luigi's Mansion I loved getting a shirt from Nintendo Power too. The only thing that was bad was the jump levels just hard.
Many times throughout this video you proclaim that Galaxy loses the exploring vibe from previous three-dimensional Super Mario titles, and you only return to each star one or two times. While Galaxy 2 is definitely very linear, I would like you to realize that Galaxy is simply not as linear as you make it out to be.
1) The large majority of the game takes place in fifteen main galaxies. The exact number is 92 out of 120 stars, equating to a % value of approximately 77. These galaxies are listed below:
1. Good Egg Galaxy
2. Honeyhive Galaxy
3. Space Junk Galaxy
4. Battlerock Galaxy
5. Beach Bowl Galaxy
6. Ghostly Galaxy
7. Gusty Garden Galaxy
8. Freezflame Galaxy
9. Dusty Dune Galaxy
10. Gold Leaf Galaxy

Each of these galaxies have six stars, except for Battlerock Galaxy and Dusty Dune Galaxy, which have seven stars. In each of these galaxies, there are three main missions, two prankster comets (one being purple coins) and one secret star, except in Battlerock Galaxy and Dusty Dune Galaxy, which have two secret stars, the second of which being green, further unlocking the Planet of Trials. Out of the remaining galaxies, seven are Grand Stars, with six of those having a boss at the end and one solo star, while the other one has one Grand Star and one Red Star, being the Gateway Galaxy, while also not having a boss. Seven further galaxies are Hungry Luma galaxies, which require feeding the Hungry Luma a certain number of Star Bits, and each of these galaxies has one star. Three further galaxies are located on the Planet of Trials, all of which have one star each, and another one is also located there, but is reserved for the ending and again has only one star. The rest of the galaxies are found in the form of ? blocks before unlocking, all of which having one star besides Buoy Base Galaxy, which has an additional Green Star. There are two of these "mini galaxies" in each of the first three domes, while the final three have only one. I hope you realize the minor mistake you made in the procedure of making your video, and look at the statistical evidence of my research.
EDIT: Galaxy 2 tends to stick to a super-linear design, with most galaxies only having two or three stars, and fewer secret stars.
While you're correct, the way that the galaxies are designed generally makes you follow a specific path for the star that you are getting. 64 and Sunshine have more open maps where the entirety of the map is sort of circular--just one big area as opposed to different areas accessed through sling stars or a linear path. Galaxy does have these, but out of the fifteen main galaxies you mentioned, only about half of them are designed like this. Furthermore, 64 and Sunshine both have ways of encouraging looking around the map and not just going straight to the star. In 64's case, it's the fact that you can get the stars out of order. In Sunshine's case, it's the blue coins. Both games also have the 100 coin mission where you'll be searching the entire level for coins. Galaxy doesn't have any of these. It does have secret stars that you can go off the main path to get, but there's only one or two per galaxy. In summary, while you're still right, JWittz has a point in that 64 and Sunshine have a greater number of open-ended levels and that they have more reasons to go off the main path and explore the levels.
Luigi 64DD I can understand what you're saying, but even if you have to generally follow an objective, you are still surrounded by the same area over and over again similar to 64 and sunshine. Also, the galaxy games have comets, putting a spin on a familiar setting, and galaxy 2 has green stars, very similar to blue coins in sunshine or some of the power moons in odyssey. I think it is obvious that we are both right, but I felt like I had to point out some things you forgot.
I don't really see how most of the comets would have you explore more, since most of them involve doing an objective again but with added difficulty, like a time limit or only 1 health point. However, the purple coin missions where you have no time limit and have to look for 100 coins definitely are an exception in that they totally encourage exploration (and they are mostly at the more open maps, not coincidentally). I didn't mention green stars because I was talking about Galaxy 1. And yeah, we both are right. I think we definitely talked about it in more depth and clarified it more than JWittz did.
Well, I think its settled. But I think that we should start discussing how Sunshine is about as open as galaxy. Think about it: for the most part you are following the missions in a specific order, unless you are going to the secret platforming stages or happen to be very good at the game. And also, Green Stars in Galaxy 2 are not that innovative anyways, they mostly require you to perform a feat of platforming, such as triple jumping and then spinning at the correct alignment. Purple coins are really great in my opinion, although often challenging, and make you feel like you're in a very open world full of collectibles.
I had some fun exploring what little I could in Galaxy. There's actually more nuances to discover than most people realize. Has anyone here explored Sea Slide Galaxy before the star that actually requires you explore the level? In the first and second star, there's some strange little differences and things to discover.
Obviously there isn't any point in which that kind of exploring and messing about leads to something major like a Power Star, but it's still interesting enough if you have the itch to explore.

Mario Galaxy is my favorite Mario game of all time. It's just so magical in my opinion. Mario Sunshine is fun and so is 64 but Galaxy is my all time favorite.
