      Yeah, in Ruby and Sapphire, if you scanned a card with data for a trainer through the e-Reader, you could battle them in that house in Mossdeep. Check 4:54. The battle e-cards he showed in this video I THINK were ones which came with Ruby or Sapphire (correct me if I'm wrong about this), but later ones were also released which not only looked different but also had additional perks. The trainers on the later cards could also appear in the Battle Tower, could have teams of all Lv100 Pokemon, and some trainers even used Pokemon who couldn't be caught in Hoenn at the time. On each card, some of the data is intentionally covered by boxes of static, so parts of their teams were meant to be mysterious until you battled them.

    • @sean1oo1
      @sean1oo1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      it also gave you berries i think. berries that couldn't be grown in game and could only be gotten from events for top tier pokeblocks or in battle effects. emerald had e reader support through the comm room but didnt acknowledge direct card swipes but it was still nice to know you could mix records to get the same bonuses.

    As someone who knows about a few technical things: e-Reader mostly does not "unlock", per say. The program, or the data is actually inside the dotcode which uses obviously the same tech as QR codes. While Amiibo, let's admit it, only unlock things (with few exceptions), most of the time on e-Reader, it wasn't like that.
    Super Mario Advance 4 Level Cards do actually contain Level Data in them. We kinda understand it now and it's not impossible to make custom cards to play on your original SMA4 cartridge for real if we want to. That's the interesting part: custom e-Reader cards have a lot more potential, and you can even make your own homebrews just fine for the e-Reader. Pokémon games were mostly just that, really.
    Japan has a lot of cards and potential to use, F-Zero cards were like Level Cards (that said, all the e-Reader content for F-Zero Maximum Velocity are actually included in western releases in the ROM!), there are also very rare Mario VS Donkey Kong Level Cards. But some e-Reader levels are actually included in the ROM of the US and Japanese versions for debug purposes, it's possible to access those.

    I've been wanting to know about this thing for a decade, so, thanks! I got a Game Boy Advance SP and Super Mario 3 for Christmas one year, and it came with a card. I remember when I saw the screen that told you to scan the card, I looked up and down my SP multiple times, thinking there was something on the system that was used to scan it. Then, years later, I figured out the E-Reader was a thing and felt like an idiot lol.

    I remember whenever I was in elementary school and the E-reader Pokemon cards came out a kid at school told me that they were used to get free Pokemon onto my gameboy games. I went back home and tried everything possible to get them to scan to my gameboy, but had no luck. I went to school the next day and called the kid a liar so we stopped being friends.
    10 years later, this video comes out and now I realize he wasn't lying lol.

    The Super Mario Bros 3. e-reader cards are actually super cool and by far the best application of the technology. It's a shame that these didn't catch on and were so expensive, it was a neat idea.

    • @RunicSigils
      @RunicSigils 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was only $40 MSRP. That's not expensive...
      That was about the price of games at the time and it had much more to it than any single game so that price was completely reasonable.

  • @Strawberryflavored0

  • @Igorcastrochucre

    The Mario vs. Donkey cards hold a bit of a mystery. Five cards were released by Corocoro Comic, 1 was given away for participants at the 20th World Hobby Fair. And there was a Japanese contest where cards were distributed across 1000 players, but nobody knows which ones, or even if they're the same. The game has 12 slots for new levels, but I don't think it's possible to access them at all.

    Man, I have some of the Pokémon TCG cards compatible with the e-Reader, and just now, realizing what that random "e" in the corner meant just blew my mind. I've had those cards for years, had no idea the secrets they were hiding.

  • @tomogotchi9140

    I had one growing up and was literally the only guy who did, people thought I was so cool (not ironically which makes it more hilarious), remember when RS didn't have every Pokemon on it? I used to think Mewtwo Ex was a way to get Mewtwo and that's why I originally bought it.
    That Pokemon Construct is so good, I recommend Juggler and starting off with Skarmory, I tried to get every single card for that game alone! Also, seriously? those attacks aren't tournament legal? never knew that, I used Kadabra's attack against someone once and it won me the game simply due to my opponent not expecting it! xD
    So many memories, had to click on this video =P

    I remember the E- reader was like a legend at my elementary school among Pokèmon card collectors, mostly because there was a rumor going around that it gave you the Pokèmon that you scanned like sort of a precursor to the mystery gifts. Do I have a bunch of things that are unopened? Sure but that is because I bought them having no use for them (or at least at the time, some of them I would have used feeling how I do now, but the time has long since passed).
      I don't care in the slightest about resale value because only through illegal activity or my death are they going to leave my possession. No matter how much they happen to be worth to others, they're priceless to me used or not.

    I got one these back when I was a kid, and it actually came with quite a few cards to use. There was a Game & Watch: Manhole card, one for Animal Crossing, the Donkey Kong Jr. card pack, and three Pokémon TCG cards (Machop, Machoke, and Machamp) to play a minigame called Machop Punch.

    Ugh, even back then, I knew the E-Reader would be bad... The only games I had worth using it was Animal Crossing and Pokémon, but I didn't want to buy a bunch of crap I'd never use again just for minor unlockables. Amiibos did it better.

    I've never seen an e-reader in person and didn't hear it talked about until very recently, but I knew of it for several years as some legendary device. Specifically I have Super Mario Advance 4 along with 3 cards and the Prima strategy guide which talked about the cards, and I have Mario Party e, which is playable without the e-reader and I have played a few times, but didn't know anything about the e-reader itself.
    Thank you for making this video.

    I remember this thing! My parents got me it for Christmas with the Pokemon Ruby cards, but since I didn't have a second Gameboy I wasn't able to use them. Still, I bought Excitebike for it, and played for so long making my own tracks with that. After going through all my Pokemon cards, I found I had a really cook Machamp minigame I would play whenever I got bored. And then recently I bought Mario Party-e on Amazon, and really loved it! Thanks for making this video and reminding me of this crazy little device

    Good news for you @TheJWittz: Most of the Mega Man cards can be unlocked digitally in the Mega Man Zero Collection on DS. Their functions can be found on The Cutting Room Floor's page for MMZ3 and can be obtained by completing one of the four games in the collection. It's unknown if they still work in the continuous scenario where you play through all four titles one after another for a more comlete story.

    Woah. I forgot all about those battle cards. I never knew what they were so I think I just got rid of them at some point. Also never knew what the Pokémon cards with E's on them meant, and never would have guessed they were connected to the battle cards.

    I wanted so desperately to get the Super Mario 3 cards when I was. The game tantalizes you by allowing you to access the e-world, but all the worlds are locked. It's a brilliant ploy in Nintendo's part, really. I'm glad that those extra levels are on the e-shop, though, and I definitely plan on buying it now.

    I genuinely loved the eReader.
    You missed the standalone Games in the Animal Crossing Cards as there a "Who Done It" Game where Booker explains a crime that happened and gives a description of the perpetrator (Color, Cloths, Species, etc) and you have to go through your card collection and scan the villager card of who you think did it based on the description.

    It's amazing how this small piece of odd tech for the GBA started with convenient ways to play games via scanning, leading to the amibo and excellent communicative ways to play games and transfer data forbsaid games.

    Great video Josh. Actually gave me an idea where you could play a game like the Pokémon TFG (if you haven't seen Josh's video on the TFG check it out - it's one of my favourites) but with amiibo and using Smash Bros as a way to settle fights when figures meet. I know it would take a while but I think it would be a cool way to use different fighters as well as prevent amiibo figures from gathering dust.
