The fact that Gilbert Arenas can just call for all Europeans to be banned from the NBA and not get laughed out the room like he should is insane.
I don't think it should be laughed at as it's pure racism/nationalist without an ounce of comedy even attempted to hide that fact. America has had White Nationalists for centuries and now we also Black Nationalists. Gilbert Arena's is the Black edition of UFC Fighter Sean Strickland. They both do the goofy hate all non American's especially if they aren't my race. As long as your American both will give you a pass but if your from any place else they have a deep seeded hatred.

The difference between Europeans and Americans was never that big until American players stopped going to college for a full experience. At least three years. In Perk’s case, he’s just not all there. He’s on air strictly for entertainment, but he thinks he’s actually a great analyst. He just seems like he’s not perceiving what’s going on around him at any given point in time.

Another point is how nuts the crowds get over there. In America players get upset because fans yell nasty things at them. In Europe? Man, it gets to a whole different level in some places. Direct threats of violence, pushing the players, throwing shit at them. American crowds are a cakewalk compared to Europe and most parts of the world, in every sport. Try being an AAU black American playing over in Spain at a high level, and then you might know what true pressure and true blatant discrimination looks like. It ain't pretty...
Facts : around 540 players in NBA (18 per team). Around 125 international players, which represents 23%.
Let's look at the top 10 defensive statistics:
- blocks : 3 international players;
- steals : 3 international players;
- rebounds : 6 international players;
- defensive rating : 2 international players;
- rebound percentage : 6 international players;
We can simplify and summarize that in the defensive top 10, we have on average 4 international players (40%). However, 40% > 23%, international players are therefore over-represented in the defense classifications, proving their efficiency.
Finally, I'm going to talk about Luka Doncic. The man who scored 73 points this season. The man who has just made his fourth triple double with at least 35 points (first in NBA history). The man who also said that scoring is easier in the NBA. In 2018, admittedly very young, he won and was elected Euroleague MVP (the ultimate European competition bringing together the best teams in Europe) by averaging 16 points per game.
European players generally play in the Euroleague before getting noticed and recruited into the NBA. They play against men and not teenagers like in the NCAA, in a very tough championship.
So in the end, no surprises with Gilbert Arenas. As during his career, he speaks and acts without thinking.
It’s also a race thing he doesn’t have any of that energy for Joel and Greek freak lol.

In 2023 FIBA World Cup, USA with basically all- black team played atrocious defensive and couldn't even metal. The European teams played defense and played a smart team game.

Look at the quotes from the players on the 2023 USA team World Cup team. They were saying the Euro rules are far more physical than the NBA rules. That they were having trouble adjusting. Luka is quoted saying no that scoring is far easier in the NBA than the EuroLeague.

As somebody who started playing basketball in Germany until I was 13, then played 4 years of high school basketball, then became a youth coach back in Germany, the idea that we emphasize team defense over 1v1 defense is just patently false. In nearly all European countries playing zone defense up until 16u or 18u is illegal, EXPLICITLY for the reason that we want to focus on players developing 1v1 skills on defense and we want to emphasize rotations. Meanwhile, kids in the US for a large part are playing zone defense in elementary and middle school because coaches care more about winning at that level than player development.

I would argue that a lack of defensive euro’s also probably comes from a dislike for euro players. Gm’s and scouts generally prefer American players, they’re more willing to take what they view as a ‘risk’ on someone who will put up 25-30 pts a night than a more defensive player.

Exactly. It has nothing to do with what country a player is from. It's the rule changes that lessened defense and increased scoring. Those Pistons and Spurs teams in the early '00s regularly held others below 90 points. The NBA consciously decided to go this route, but they've let it get out of hand to the point that I think FIBA basketball is more enjoyable than the NBA.

One thing to take into account is that the rules of basketball are enforced in Europe. An offensive player can't get away with traveling, double dribble etc. So the first European players that came to the nba couldn't play defense that effectively, not just because the game was faster than in Europe, but also because the refs did not call things they should and the europeans had a hard time adapting to this "double standards."

The thing is outside of hand checking and zoning, the rules haven't even been changed that much. They just flat out stopped calling them. Its why I like watching college and Olympic basketball more. One rule that needs to be changed immediately is calling shooting fouls on contact initiated by the offense. I HATE when someone like Embiid or Harden are driving, throw their shoulder into a defender, and then jump up to throw a non-competitive shot in order to get a foul call. It’s unreal how prevalent it is and how often it works. That should be a no call 100% of the time.
