Just for fun, for a guard to average 43 PPG on 25 shots (like AI attempted), he'd have to:
Shoot 50% from the field, 40% from 3 on AT LEAST 12 attempt a night AND shoot 90% from the FT% on at least 14 attempts a night.
AI has never done any one of those things ONCE.

I'll tell you how, as someone who's a Chicago homer and a fan of the Rockets during the Rockets' tenure. For one, Harden's game was very simple. Layups and step-back/side-step 3s with no mid-range whatsoever. Harden's overall percentages don't take into account the game-by-game context of Harden seasons over his career. One night he can score a 50+ point triple double. The next night he can go 2-27 from the field, 1-16 from 3, getting the majority of his shots from the freethrow line. That goes especially in the playoffs when he's not gettin' foul calls.
For AI to average 43 points in the modern era, more than likely he would have to be on a terrible team to get that many shot attempts, or he would have to have literally one of the best, most efficient seasons of all time, which is possible but extremely unlikely. Like, he would have to have Devin Booker Game 3/4 against the Nuggets last playoffs-type of efficiency, which I would love to see, but this is all hypothetical anyway. Either way, it's certainly possible and fun to think about.

@chrisakokoh9118 You don't think he was inefficient because of how they were playing him? 2-3 big men in the paint the whole time, tight defense. You would literally have to play Drop coverage against AI and just pray he misses uncontested shots. No one is guarding him, he handles like prime Kyrie. Prime D Rose. And you can't play him tight with the rules of the game today because one screen and now it's a layup drill. So yeah I mean, sag off him and pray he can't hit open mid range jumpers I guess. That doesn't really sound like a great strategy though. Another thing is this dude, a lot like Kobe, was always playing hurt. Always driving and taking contact inside. That wouldn't happen today. He'd be fresher. There's no back-to-backs. Etc. Idk man. Not saying you're wrong I'm just saying IMO I could definitely see him getting 40 a night and breaking down any defense.

The only way you could stop AI from driving is fouling him. His effectiveness in this wide open league would be 50-60% from 0-3 feet. He’d get to the line 15 times and make 12 FT’s (80%) and he’d make 15 of 30 shots at the basket. 42 PPG.
Now let’s take 5 of those 30 shots and make them 3-point attempts. He’d drive 25 times and make 12 and drain 2/5 from 3-point. Still 42 PPG.
Add in a few outliers and games where he gets hot from 3 or has a 60-70 point explosion, he’s averaging nearly 45 ppg.
Yes, he’s shooting 47-40-80 splits like he did vs the Pistons in the 2005 playoffs because like in 2005, hand-checking was banned and even against elite defense like the Pistons, that allowed him to shoot 47-40-90 splits

If an opposing team is bricking long rebounds from 3 all night, I can envision a game where AI literally gets 30 points on fast breaks alone.
And if he could carry the ball and travel with his handles, he’d end careers on a nightly basis. 43 is high but 40 is not out of the question. The game is so wide open now compared to his era.
I think the only thing he might struggle with is the surplus of 6’9 utility defenders. But he’d still tear them apart 1on1.

    • @nbarealtalker
      @nbarealtalker 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@goreyboyz8564 I actually agree that to be the logical rebuttal. It depends how the defence reacts. There is a surplus of 6’9 utility players now playing
positionless basketball but simultaneously there are like 1-2 traditional centres left in the league. Iverson was a relentless attacker of the basket and the bottom line is, the area of the court he worked in most during the half-court offence is literally a wide open field compared to his era. There is a degree of assumption involved in how the pace and openness would impact his game. But all we know is he averaged 33 with both those factors being against him in 2000-2006. My main argument would be his speed. Luka and Embid have 60-70 point games in today’s game and I don’t care what the pace and possession count is, nor how skilled they are at scoring, those dudes are everything BUT fast 😂
The reason I grant him 40 is because I think he can literally get 20-30 pts a night without shooting a single FG. He’s gonna shoot 10 free throws on a slow night and running a layup line on the fast break when the other team has a bad shooting night.

People saying MJ could average 50 are silly too. Peak offensive Jordan would probably end up at the line a bit more often and the more open lanes may let him be a little more efficient around the rim, maybe he takes a stepback 3 instead of 1-2 of his long mids too so as he had a season at 35 and one at 37 I could see that becoming 40 but a lot of these numbers people throw around are crazy.

As someone who was old enough to remember watching Iverson play, I can tell you it's extremely likely he could average 40+, the spacing and gamelan has vastly changed since he's been around. His 3 would be much better than 30% I believe because of the training for it. The spacing of the game is better than its ever been. Its very good weather for iso game. Which is what he specializes in. We already have an idea of what he would look like with kyrie, could kyrie do it? Uh... yeah, he could. Could is the operative word here. The gamelan would have to be ball heavy for his hands, which could lack efficiency in overall team performance. At the end of this, COULD Iverson average 43? Yes. He could. Is it likely? Not really. Most teams won't sacrifice this much to get their players. Plus minutes seem to be getting a bit lower than they used to be.
I love watching Iverson. But 43? Eh. Sure I'll give it to him. But... selfishness or not, I guarantee the team isn't getting past 40 wins.
The history of high scoring players doesn't usually bode well for efficiency in team production, so, you can have your cake, but... might not be able to eat it.

I love Allen Iverson's game and whatnot. But yeah, there's no way he's averaging 43 points. I could see scoring about 33-39 ppg. His assists would most certainly increase because every team has more than one offensive threat. I can honestly see AI attempting like 6 3's a game.

What Rashaad seems to be missing in his argument about Iverson going up against the "top centers" is that after Iverson's rookie year Ewing and Olajuwon had significant drop-offs and the center position as a whole was in decline. Most centers, outside of the small amount of Hall of Fame ones, during Iverson's era just were not that good. Most were nothing but big bodies and nothing else!!

This was a great video LOW. Through all the number crunching and disagreeing the whole time I’m wondering what it would take for Iverson to average 43 and at the end you gave it to us. Great work.

AI one year averaged 28 shoots per game where the league average was 81 shoots per team. He was taking 35% of the shoots on his team... a 12 man roster. If you put that number in todays game he is taking 31-32 shoots per game 🤣
If he had 45 FG% and 33% from 3 and lets say 12 free throws per game on 31 shoots this man would average 40-41ppg.
