Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Iron Man Mark I Helmet!

  • Continuing his work on his Iron Man Mark I armor costume, Adam turns his focus to the helmet. The helmet that came with the costume is painted resin, but needs a new paint metallic paint job for better screen accuracy. It's a multi-stage application to give it a brilliant chrome finish which is then taken down with some oil paint weathering. Adam also builds out the inside of the helmet to line it with leather and make it not only wearable, but also functional with a flip-up face visor!

      Are you going to add some cooling fans for the helmet? I've recently found out that they make magnetic USB cables so this kind of solution might be useful so you do not have to plug off the cable if you put the powersource in the armor, e.g.: gobaseus.com/product/baseus-insnap-cable-lightning-1-2m/

      So the interesting bit, the hinge mechanism got time lapsed and glossed over. Yet we got to watch a whole bunch of metal bending. Sometimes I wonder why these one day builds get made. You manage to zoom in on the simple bits and then give us a wide shot of the whole shop when Adam's doing the interesting or fine work. Or just time lapse them.

    • @ironwolfstudios2857
      @ironwolfstudios2857 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to the interwebs the best way to anneal aluminum is to use an oven and heat it to a specific temperature range, between 570° and 770° Fahrenheit depending on the alloy. Leave it there for a little while, 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the alloy, and then quench in water. The quick dirty method is the sharpie trick, where you mark the work piece with the permanent marker and then hit it with a low oxygen oxy-acetylene torch until the sharpie marks disappear, then quench in water.
      Copper/bronze are much easier though. Just use a torch on it to evenly heat the piece until it starts to get red, and then dunk it in warm water. Softens it right up. And you can do that as many times as required.

    The chrome finish is so satisfying to watch!! I'm wondering if there is any reason you prefer the Molotov liquid chrome with Alclad sealer, instead of using Alclad's own chrome? Currently working on my first project with a chrome finish, so I'm trying to be good and do some research! - Martina

      Not Mr. Savage, but Molotow is a graffiti paint manufacturer. The specialize in aerosol and paint markers, I believe they originated in Europe which has a much more Graffiti forward outlook than in the states, but that's not super relevant. Because Molotow paint is used for Graffiti it has to do two things really well. Stick extremely well to a variety of surfaces (usually which are exterior and dirty) and it has to extremely resilient, not only for harsh outdoor climates but also resilient against the removal of the paint. If you ever used artist quality graffiti paint you will know it's very hard to removed and it is very hard to cover up with new paint. Because of the chemical properties even a fresh coat of local hardware paint won't full cover up the graffiti paint, and that's by design.
      So with extreme resilience and extraordinary adhering properties a graffiti paint is going to be a lot more durable than your airbrush art paints which don't have to endure as much abuse. And lastly, Chrome is a highlight color of most graffiti art paints. It's been a staple as a color for almost 20 years. So while big brand paint companies have cornered the market in automotive grade chrome paint, there was a hole in the market for someone to r&d an aerosol based chrome paint. Rustomleum and Krylon had always geared towards solid colors, but are now branching out to specialty paints and finishes. So with that gap and the desire for resilient and durable hand held chrome spray paint, companies like Montana, IronLak, Molotow and MTN all put in the effort to make an easy quick option for chrome aerosol paint, without the need of a spray gun, and spray booth. One of the best chrome spray paints I have ever used with almost mirror like finish is Oink Art LTD chrome, it's US based but it provided a level of reflectivity I haven't quite seen yet in any other paint, even more than Molotow's version. So while paint recipes change all the time for various reasons, I can only see the aerosol version's of chrome getting better and better in the years to come.

    Wow Adam is really good at this, no he’s great, no he’s a master, no he’s a grandmaster. It’s masterful to see how quickly he can work out a plan, but then he measures with the tattoo on his arm and pulls a sculpture of his head. I’m not trying to blow smoke. Adam presents a master level and then goes beyond that expectation over and over again.
