Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Painting Iron Man Armor!

  • What is Adam's favorite part of making? The paint, of course! Wanting a beaten-up, shiny metal finish for his Iron Man Mark I suit, Adam applies a gloss black undercoat, adds liquid chrome, then seals it all with a clear coat. But the job's only half done; Adam needs to wait a week for the paint to cure before he can start weathering (which will be another One Day Build)!

  • @Pythondotau
    @Pythondotau 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You should really consider investigating a newer method of chipping done by modellers, you use hairspray as an intermediate between your base and final layers, and use water to wear the paint away to form your chipping patterns, very flexible in how little or how much you take off. Only thing is you'd probably need to use tamiyas acrylics not rattle cans. May be too much time considerations, but the fidelity it grants you is amazing.

painting and aging stuff i build totally equals the step of putting varnish on a workpiece of wood i made.
When the grain starts to pop i feel each time like i am rewarded for all the prior work :)

    Hi Adam,
If memory serves, at some point, you had expressed some concern for overspray containment in the shop.
I'd like to humbly suggest a potential solution that is modular, collapse-able, inexpensive, and takes up minimal space when not in use.
An assortment of 1/2 inch PVC pipe, cut into manageable lengths (let's say 1', 1.5', and 3', YMMV) combined with an assortment of couplers (straight, 90 degree, and 3-way) can be used to build a variety of lightweight frame structures, which in turn can then be draped with inexpensive plastic drop cloth material (masking tape is optional).
When the paint project is done, the structure is easily disassembled, the PVC pieces stored in a box, and the drop cloth material discarded.
Overspray is contained, dust is prevented from contaminating your work, and the framework takes up little space when being stored (After it's disassembled, of course... :-) ).

Adam, you talk about graphic design a lot in your videos - Contrast and composition! My clients always wonder why I design everything in B&W first before I go looking for color. I've been doing a lot of scratch build model making lately, and I'm looking forward (also dreading) the detail work. Since I do all my models from scratch mostly, I'm going to be doing all the detail work by hand; old school, no 3D printing and no printed decals. These videos are so helpful ; ) I would love to visit your shop!

You are engaged in such interesting projects, BUT take care of your health - do not paint products without a hood...it's very harmful and the paint settles all over everything. With love from Russia.

Adam, If you love painting SO SOOO Much, you really need a spray booth , and you wouldn't believe how hard paint gets if you bake your enamels. Even at 200° for a couple of hours. Let it cool to room temp and you can't scrap it with a nail. Maybe get a shipping container and convert it . (hanging hooks, layout tables ect.) Heck, it could even go mobile.....

3M makes a new 1/2 face respirator you'd benefit from- "Rugged Comfort". They have a flip lever under the chin so you can loosen the mask without taking it off. Then just flip it back down to tighten. Good for talkers and spitters. Just sayin'...

QUESTION -say you have materials that you don't need or are unsure you'll ever use but they're useful and would be a shame to waste. What do you do with those materials? Aside from recyclables and uncommon material
I'm reorganizing my garage/shop with a focus on utilizing more real-estate and I know I need to downsize but don't want to set it on the curb hoping someone picks it up before waste management.
An example would be some great pieces of foam board and thick rigid cardboard.
    *wondeful content/great theropy!!!

Hi Adam, when it comes to paint chipping, why not get a scrap of sponge, dip into liquid mask, dab onto where you want chipping, let it dry, do a wash over the top, let it dry, then with a dry brush rub off the liquid mask, always works for me……and looks realistic

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to use Alclad II Chrome?
And it kinda hurts, you mispronouncing Molotow [molotov] and you need to learn to control the paintflow of your airbrush.
Still a big fan of what you do.

Surely there has to be some way to make spray painting and airbrushing more efficient. It seems like SO MUCH paint is going everywhere but on the object being painted (this is not an Adam-specific observation, but a comment on the general process).

is no one else driven crazy by the fact that the "drive belts" on the legs are flippin backwards/inside out??? the teeth should be on the INSIDE, not the outside!
Sure, the way they are adds "detail & texture" to the overall aesthetic, but it is just so wrong realistically.
