Yep this happend to me on a rusted chamber. clamp broke hit me in the head right eye socket fractured broken nose and after the spring hit my head it came back down after hitting the bottom of the trailer cut my head open. its no joke please be safe.
As valuable as this video is, it was way too hard to find. TH-cam algorithm needs to get its act together. Thank you for putting yourself in harms way for this demonstration.
First I want to say, yes I'm the Mr. Weeks in the video. This was not my first time doing this, it was the first time filming it. I wanted the spring for brakes classes to illustrate the size of the spring. That being said, with my experience doing this I knew where the spring was going to go. Yes the cutting torch set is there, but the angle makes it look closer that it actually is. It is quite humbling to see all the comments and how it is being used outside of our college.
Thanks for creating and sharing this! I’m an entry level school bus mechanic and I was working on a single chamber today for my first time on my own and my second time doing it ever. Luckily the spring only had as much pressure as a Slinky. Because it could’ve been the end of me had it not.
I wonder how many lives you have saved by making this video, great stuff. I been around for while but have never been exposed to this type of brake but knew they were dangerous. I am on a tunneling job which has rolling stock with these brakes fitted, I will be showing you video to our mechanical team as a safety talk as a most of them have no idea of the dangers of with these units. A quick question, should you disarm them if they are going to the scrap? Cheers
What pisses me off is brake chamber band clamps coming in contact with the adjacent chamber when mounting. You then have to loosen the clamps and rotate the clamp. Fucking dangerous.
My Dad had a small trucking business years ago when I was really young. He was teaching me how to service the trucks. One day he after he just got back from a trip he told me to change the diaphragm on one of the brake cans on the diesel tractor which I think had 13?bolts holding the can together. The one bad thing he didn’t tell me was I had to bleed the air system first. I got all the 13 bolts off and was tapping on the brake can with a hammer to sort of loosen it up and lifted my head off the creeper to see why it wasn’t coming off. Right when I was moving my face out of the way it blew off barely hitting the side of my face. I received a huge lump and bruise to my cheek bone and I socket. If my face was directly in the way of that sudden explosion it might of smashed my face into pieces and maybe bled out since I was the only one at the shop.
nah nah nah, you just replace the phreakin can. there ain't no rebuilding or replacing diaphragms, you replace the can. replace the diaphragm on the fronts all you want but when it come to drive and trailer brakes...REPLACE THE PHREAKING CAN!!! duh
@@randyfox7570 theres still brand new cans on brand new 2022 model trucks with 2 clamps. All heavier duty than normal semi trucks but still being made.
Notice how shakey he is yeah i comoletely understand why these things literally kill people genuinely feel sorry for the heavy rig mechanics dealing with these on the regular
This video should have more likes.Mr. Weeks, would be an honor to sit with you and learn from your knowledge.Very good instructional video

Hopefully the customer didn't have to pay for the new chamber. 🤣

Having that oxy acetylene set in the general direction makes it a much more suspenseful video.. cheers 👍

i love when instructors show us safety so we dont let our intrusive thoughts win.

Absolutely disarm them if they are scrapped
Great video, just used it as a safety topic at our shop.
Imagine that compressed with the cap coming off.

I shot one of those cans with a high velocity rifle, the spring went up about 25 feet in the air.
Throw one of those in a can with Tannerite lol

DAMN !!! That's an impressive amount of energy stored up on the chamber.
Always wonder what would happen if one of those things flew out and how it would look. Thank you for that.

Great informative video. I was going to be a dumbass and try taking it apart but after watching this no freaking way.
The shops I have worked at have a strict no rebuilding policy. Its less liability and safer to just change the unit out.
Makes zero sense rebuilding one. They aren’t that expensive
This is also why they tell you don't release the center bolt on a strut if you haven't compressed the spring......
I've never seen a brake can get taken apart at my shop, if one goes bad we just replace the whole thing

Yup, new cans don't even have the side bolt clamps.

You still have to line up the brake can and bands so it works.

Now I understand why my Dad lectured us on NOT TO disassembling that things !!
So if you remove the caging bolt or didn’t install it, it would fly?
people who put the timestamp for what the video is about in the description or comments are guaranteed a spot in heaven
too risk ...but very understandi...very clear of not doing it ever.
my everyday routine in Hanjin replacing and repair brake chamber diaphragm
I'm old school, and Cat's that Guy's not KIDDING!
I had a friend who was killed by one hit him in the head.
Next time put the oxygen and acetylene tanks in the direct path of the spring, might make things a little more interesting.
I've done piggyback on road calls but don't like even doing that. That's a bastard spring no doubt.
Wow awesome video
What would happen if you disassemble the service side without caging?
There’s a smaller spring on that side too right? So it’s still not safe.
@@Dub-ry4cs what I do is use a pair vice grips so it don’t jump at me but either I stay away from their you never know
Holy crap.
How much longer does the cage bolt need to be, to safety release the spring for salvage?
Or is it just best to blow it in a cage?
Half a mile or so
@@ibrahimcehajic hahaha
Thank you
Damn that's crazy shit
It would literally go through someone
good vid.
poor crate motor
I nearly took my head off with one of these

Why bother for $50?
just replace the unit! there cheap and no liability
these are suicide canisters. people have been killed working on these i have seen this happen a few times in my 31 year career as a truck driver
40 yrs ago my Dad (a truck driver himselv) told us NOT to disassembly those things and now I know why!
good job my boss
please am looking for job and I know someone can help me true here🙏
these are nothing to f with!
