I welded 2 deep sockets together and made my own cagging bolt socket, I didn't have two weeks to wait to order one, keep those threads greased, it makes the job easier. THANKS for the tips on cagging. William
Back when I worked on trailers we would just torch the spring and let em pop and replace them.... So 56 other people were probably trained wrong like me 🤣
Great video thank you. Now i know why i keep breaking off the tabs, got the Milwaukee impact cranking em' tight. Gotta switch over to the knuckle smacker.

I use a pass through ratchet and socket. On a lot of trash truck applications there is something right behind the can and you wouldn't be able to get the socket on the cage bolt.
Informative, thanks 👍 but question: once the bolt is extended out how do you get your tool off? Seems to me it would be good to use a rod coupling nut instead, and a box or open end wrench 😊
This will be my first time replacing my brake chambers on my trailer and i want to learn, but i also don’t want my face smashed, so my question is: Before i remove the brake chamber trailer brakes should be applied or released ? thank you!
Released to remove all the brakes components, if you have access to air you can release the brakes and put the caging bolt in tighten up and then set the parking brakes if you lose air. It’ll save time and elbow grease, likewise when taking it out
Question: If air is still supplied, will the service brake still operate with the spring brake caged? I say it will as it's no different than air holding the spring brake back. But 2 guys in the shop say it will not and that they've tried it before. I think if that is true then they has another problem. What say you, internet?
Just wondering why they just don't use a free spinning washer nut or a flange nut so there are less parts to lose???? And the socket might be 5" deep but it's not 5" long and 5" deep. Not a trucker or truck mechanic but those caging bolts are cheap enough that I'm going to buy a couple just in case I run across a trucker in need.😊
Yes is temporary, you don't want to be caught driving a commercial vehicle with the chamber cage(or without brakes) Thats what are you doing eliminating the brake system. When you remove the bolt, brakes strat working again! That its just to replace the chambres,or my case. I need to move a trailer on the yard that I park Air tank leaks, and their is no enough pressure to release brakes. I cage those bolt and tire moved freely.
Air pressure should not be a problem. Usually when caging brakes on the side of the road it’s due to the lack of air pressure and the vehicle needs to be moved. So caging the brakes releases spring brake pressure and moving the vehicle can now be accomplished. To uncage the brake chamber just turn the nut counter clockwise until the caging bolt can be removed. This applies spring brake pressure and now the vehicle cannot be moved without air pressure
If the center shaft, push rod, is not lined up with the caging hole the chamber should be replaced due to internal failure. If you cannot cage the spring, the chamber should not be in service. The spring has most likely broken causing the push rod to be pushed out of alignment. There are other internal failures that could result and that’s why it’s best to replace it. A failed emergency side will fail to lock up the wheel end in an emergency situation along with failure to set the parking brake.

Just wondering, if the plug has fallen off the opening and you cant cage the pot because its full of dirt will removing the brake pot release that brake?
You will need to remove the brake pot and clean the debris out then place brake pot back on, the pot is being used as a set force to keep the key engage in the cylinder. Unless you have a manufactured too that does otherwise it's just easier to do it with the pot on
Is there something you have to do before caging like releasing the air or something for safety related? any one who is reading and knows this can answer for me. Thanks
Didn't work. Went tight still wouldn't move went tighter slightly bent washer. Still currently stranded on the road. I do like the shortness of the video. Maybe its another issue i have
Not trying to be a jerk or nothing but it would be more helpful if he went through the whole process. Weather the brakes should be on or off etc and maybe show a cutout view on how the piston works 🤔
THIS IS NOT TRUE!these threads on that caging bolt are not juct coarse threads ! they are loose and some odd threads that dont get bound up with rust!i have never heard of taking them out and storing them in the cab
Straight to the point, no nonsense conversation. Thats what ive been looking for. Appreciated it sir.

oddly .I DIDNT WANT TO spend time welding something up! so i used an end wrench!
Could have used a rod coupling nut and a box or open end wrench... just sayin'.
Thanks for the video. This helped me out when I was in a jam, trying to clean up an old yard in the pouring rain
Thanks for uploading this!
I'm looking at buying an old trailer, and I might need to use this method to unlock/unstick the brakes.

Depends on why you need to cage it. If road debris cut the air lines to the brake then no, it absolutely will NOT operate.
I would like to see this on a non Big Tech platform.
Please.
Excellent job
@ 2:12 don't you mean "run the NUT all the way in"?
awesome vid ,

Reason for not using impact?
Just wondering why they just don't use a free spinning washer nut or a flange nut so there are less parts to lose????

Is it a temporary process in order to move a vehicle? And will the brakes lock up again if the bolt is taken out?
Yes is temporary, you don't want to be caught driving a commercial vehicle with the chamber cage(or without brakes)
Thats what are you doing eliminating the brake system.
When you remove the bolt, brakes strat working again! That its just to replace the chambres,or my case.
I need to move a trailer on the yard that I park
Air tank leaks, and their is no enough pressure to release brakes.
I cage those bolt and tire moved freely.
The cap on the break chamber should it alway be kept plugged in? Or it can just hang lose ?
its just a dust cap!leave it loose if yoy want but WHY WOULD YOU?
So if a brake chamber locks up to move the truck or trailer to get back to the shop you would cage the brake chamber like this.
YES your releasing the spring by caging it the bolt holds the spring back
What’s the socket size?
3/4" nut
19 mm Is the same as 3/4”
Is air pressure a problem and when uncaging do you just reverse until stopping?
Trying to move a bus right now
Air pressure should not be a problem.
Thanks,
And what if the center shaft is not centered allowing the cagong bolt to go in
If the center shaft, push rod, is not lined up with the caging hole the chamber should be replaced due to internal failure.
