  • I had to take a break from fishing this weekend due to thunderstorms. This gave me the perfect opportunity to create a video on the progress of my DIY skiff. I have been been slowly building a wooden skiff (Bateau SK14) in my garage for the past two years. I am finally nearing the end of the build and can't wait to get it on the water. This little microskiff will be a South Texas fishing machine!

    I finished making a Bateau SK-14 about a month ago. I made a few minor modifications. I need to make a trailer still and am trying to get a motor. Due to the rona, everything is on back order. Good job on yours,

      I'm having a hard time finding a trailer! I figured I would just pick up a used jon boat trailer off of Craigslist or FB Market. That is proving to be more difficult than I expected! I was able to get the motor from OnlineOutboards.com but that was about 6 months ago.

    Oh, and FYI, in case you don't already know, Houston Hardwoods is a great source for marine grade plywood like meranti or okoume, should you have a need. That where I bought all of the meranti for my build, and it was well worth the five hour drive from the DFW area.

    Great build, thanks for the detailed explanation and thank you for sharing. IMO 8hp might be a bit under power. I had an 8 hp mercury on my 16 foot Jon boat and max speed with 2 adults was 7 to 8 mph. Got dangerous around bigger boats because I couldn't outrun the wake they created.

    • @SchwindOutdoors
      @SchwindOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment! I am slightly worried that 8hp will be under powered. The designer of the boat doesn't recommend going higher. I'll start with this one and can always upgrade in the future!

    I know this is 8months late but if you are putting non skid on fairing the deck really isn't a big deal and could save you a lot of time. I used softsand on mine and it's very nice. But I've also seen Eva foam from Amazon that works well too.

      @@SchwindOutdoors I’m a retired boat builder , but I’ve never done a stitch and glue before , I’m going to try making a 16’flats boat but I’m going to use cheap 1/4” luan ply and 1/2” ply for bulk heads and stringers , an old trick we used was to dilute mixed general purpose resin with acetone to thin it out and saturate the wood let it kick off and laminate over it , and then I’ll add some 1/4””or 1/2”” scored core cell composite on the inside and glass over it to add strength and glass the outside w / 16oz boat cloth GP resin , sand , fill, fair, roll on primer, sand , roll on paint. That's really cool! I would love to be a full time boat builder. The acetone dilution trick sounds like a good thing to know. I'll have to remember that for my next build. While I've got you; is air temperature an issue when paining the boat? I will be using the roll and tip method of painting with Quantum 99 EMC topcoat. I'm worried that this Texas heat will cause problems during painting.
