How Hot Does The PlayStation 5 Get?

  • Today we are doing a quick test on how the PS5 deals with heat when put in certain situations like being inside an enclosed area or if the intake gets clogged. I also wanted to see what would happen if the PS5 hit its thermal limit in a scenario where the fan failed. These temperatures will vary since we're using thermal probes, but it gives us a good idea as to how the PS5 heats up in certain cases.

As you can see, the box and shirt are fully engulfed, and the table itself has caught on fire, slowly working its way towards me. Our temperature readings are still going up here, as we switch back to the overhead camera. The temperature warning has come up, but I'm going to press ok and see how long I can keep playing.

@Smok3 SHO considering the average life cycle of a generation is 6 years, I'd say that's meaningless to most who aren't people who keep their systems, which is increasingly becoming less of an issue with revisions and backwards compatibility. Besides, I doubt that and implore you to substantiate that claim. I won't deny the ram thermal solution is odd, but it's nowhere near operating at its maximum thermal capacity of 100 odd degrees.

Hehe even Americans have to bow to the great C when doing thermals on electronics (though I did see one channel using F which was very surprising). I'd say it's because we pretty much all agree that 100 degrees C is about the max that silicon can take, so using F would be a bit confusing.

    • @roochiecooch

There might be an actual thermal shutdown on this, but it's probably when the chip exceeds TjMax (which I believe is 110C for Radeon GPUs, so probably the same here). What's surprising is that there is actually thermal throttle on that SoC, and that there is so much copper on top that it's seemingly enough to keep the temperatures down with the fan disconnected.

I’ve not put this thing in my entertainment stand as I figured it would get hot. It surely pushes out a lot of air. It is quite, but I had to push it a ways from the wall as I could tell it was getting the wall hot. It’s a hard system to plan where it will be in your entertainment center. I do wonder if some of the issues that the PS5 is experiencing is because parts of the interior of the console are reaching temperatures of 90°c +. I can't help but think that the console reaching that temperature over again over a prolonged period is going to cook and damage the system over time. I honestly would not be surprised if there is a mid-gen refresh with a revamped cooling system and perhaps some additional fans to allow for a much better air flow.

Okay...I own them both and the Series X has felt more hot to the touch at times (while playing COD Cold War). Now, when I say hot to the touch we're talking the level of heat coming out of a very small and cheap Walmart desk heater...in other words the Series X is great at displaying games in 4K HDR10 w/Ray Tracing, almost nonexistent load times, and producing AI (Watchdog's Legion) like I have never witnessed before in my life. It is a truly impressive console but a terrible heater.
The PS5 *physical disc edition has been cool to the touch the entire two weeks or so since its release when we got it (day one for both 10th and the 12th of Nov). What's really interesting is it not only blows air from the back but you can feel it coming from the top front of the case. Just like the Series X, the PS5 is a truly remarkable machine that in my opinion pulls it's weight quite well. Whichever you choose you cannot go wrong and that's a bold but accurate statement.
Addendum- I have been an early adopter since the Sega Saturn and PlayStation in 1995. This console launch has produced the most well built machines I ever witnessed. My fiancee and I play side-by-side every night after work on two separate 4K UHD's. She is a true blue PlayStation girl and I'm more of an Xbox guy. Yes, we love both machines but we have our preferences.

You're dealing with different testing scenarios, different testing environments, and different testing procedures. You can't expect the numbers to match up completely.
What you're looking for with multiple test sources is patterns. Both Gamers Nexus and Spawnwave's testing make it clear that the memory chip(s) on the opposite side of the board gets significantly hotter than the SOC. It's likely that the memory chip will still operate fine over time, but that is a definite weakness in the design especially when you consider how much heatsink is inside the system. It would have been better if they had found a way to better connect those ram modules to the heatsink so they don't get so hot.
