DIY Dragging Door Fix On A 2000 Mustang GT

  • In this video we show you how to make a repair on a door that has some slop in the hinge pin/hinge for the price of a couple flat washers. Obviously, the best way to make this repair is to replace the hinge pin but this requires hunting down and purchasing a hinge pin kit. It also will require a cutoff wheel and some skill operating this type of equipment in a tight area while being careful not to damage the paint in the jamb. This method requires only a couple of basic tools and 15-30 mins of your time. The result is a door that closes as good as new. Hope this helps some people out that have this issue. Thanks for watching! Please don't forget to thumbs up and subscribe! Thanks!

    Just a FYI I just used this video to fix my doors but with one difference. I used standard body shims that look like a rectangle washer except it has a groove cut in so I didn’t have to remove the bolts I just loosened them up and slid the shims in. Worked perfect. Thanks for the vid

    • @2RCPRODUCTIONS
      @2RCPRODUCTIONS  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice👍 where did you find the shims, if a person has to go out to get washers might as well get shims if it's easier. I used what I had in the garage, thanks for the feedback and for watching 😀👍

    • @loudonello5405
      @loudonello5405 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can find the shims at any auto parts store. Just ask for body shims. They are used to shim out body panels on cars and come in packs of 10 with all different thicknesses

    I ordered new pins from O'Reilly's Saturday and went to pick them up today(Wednesday) because that's when they said they'd come in. Well, counter kid never ordered so I reordered. Found this video today and tried it out. Started with 2 washers stacked and backed down to just one. Opens and shuts like new. I'm still replacing pins and bushings but only when i find a good price. Thanks man. I subscribed and liked and will definitely pass along to anyone in the same boat. Also, don't sweat the reading glasses. 20/20 all my life but I recently had to get a cheap pair of Walmart 1.25 readers. I'm 37 and going blind. Lol. ... Welding... But simple idea. Can't believe I didn't think of it but great hack. Thanks again young man!

      @@2RCPRODUCTIONS mine was pretty loose. The washers are perfect for a broke guy like me and they would probably last the lifetime, bit I would still recommend replacing the pins and bushings. If anything, we need to figure out how to just make bushings to tap in there. It's a thought and if I get a minute I will think on it. Now I need free tricks to gain some hp. I'm in a lil ole 99 6 banger. 3.8 bit it has potential.... With money...

    • @2RCPRODUCTIONS
      @2RCPRODUCTIONS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Floyd Briggs You are 100% correct,.The main reason i didnt mess with the pins is besause of the tight area and the risk of damaging the paint. There is a cool few videos with a guy with a 6 all cammed out on the tube the car sounds amazing! There is a young guy in my area with a 6 all cosmetically decked out and looks Great! Awesome fix - and excellent comments. I used the same method in video, except I got the 6 dollar pack of Dorman Shims from Autozone. Since they're U shaped, you don't have to remove the bolt.
    I got the shim idea from someone else after I had tried with only 1 washer and no luck (I saw somewhere else the shim idea, but I don't think the other video said how many, etc.
    For me the largest shim, plus 2nd largest shim worked.
    And then I didn't have a good jack, but I had a pretty solid plastic tub and I put a board on top.
    I got kinda lucky with that method... I was going to try shimming (not 'swimming' spell chec) the passenger door first.
    Both doors where making that god awful sound when opening or closing.
    But when I checked the alignment.. the passenger door was fine. The rubber things on both door hinges needed some good WD40 silicone etc.
    But that made me realize the with the height of the passenger door being correct... I had a "known good" height to use as a comparison for the left.
    I used my tub and board and since it fit under the door, I just needed the driver side that height (but probably a schmidgend higher because I'm not going to get it spot-on correct).
    Worked great :-)
    That sagging door has bothered me for a while - lol
    And I guess I forgot that the creaking noise has nothing to do with sagging, but that the bottom half of the hinge is dry (the part with the spring-rubber part).
    Great video - I'm super happy to have this fixed
    And thanks much for the other peoples comments that suggested using the shims from autozone etc (rather than round washers that require bolt to be removed).
    Thanks!!

    Dude you do not know how clutch this video is, I was dreading having to replace the shims because it seems like such a tedious job but now I'm leaving to get some washers and fix this problem.
    To anyone reading, if you ignore this problem you'll also end up replacing your latch assembly as well.

    It is so much easier to just go ahead and
    1. Take a cut off wheel or hell even a small hacksaw blade if you have to and cut the pins in the center at the top.
    2. Remove one at a time and then install bushings/sleeves (depending on which replacement kit you buy, cheap or good)
    3. Install new pin, repeat on second hinge and whala. Done 😊

    I went with fender washers for mine. Being open ended, made them easier to install. No need to completely remove the bolts.But if you are going to use washers for this fix, might I suggest binding them with masking tape and punching a hole in the middle ? Less mess that way. In any case, thanks for the idea. Ford had a brain fart or two with this set up.

    Thanks for the video! I watched it, and as darkness was falling, I started this trick in my driveway and got it done rather quickly. Door closes like buttah!
    2000 base model.
    I found some rather thick, large washers in my toolbox (fender washers?) and used only one ea. I get the mechanics of it, and it sure is a heck of a lot easier than replacing the pins. My concern is that the existing pins and bushings, which are worn, will continue to wear, and I'm concerned that this fixed will only be temporary before the door start sagging again. How are your fixes holding up so far?

    • @2RCPRODUCTIONS
      @2RCPRODUCTIONS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching man!! I have had no change in the doors on either car in a bad way. This is the way I figure it. Your a 💯 % correct that there is some wear and not as much as you would think because it's such a small amount at the pin. Over the distance of the door it becomes more apparent at the catch. Your car has almost 20 years of wear till it got to the point your at. Even if you get 5 years out of a washer you had laying around it's worth it and in the mean time your not damaging the catch. It's definitely not the long term best fix but for free and a few minutes, pretty good👍. I have since found the whole hinge assembly that can be purchased for a swap out but they were pretty costly to replace. But once the door needs another adjustment that would probably be the time for full replacement. I think your repair will be good for a long while and one big issue is people hanging or puting weight on them. The doors are already heavy enough without that...Keep me posted on how your door is holding up👍

      You can adjust that gap by loosening the same bolts and adjusting with shim and twisting. Adjust, snug, recheck, make more adjustments as needed. I remember going through this process and the fender gap to door would change as I made moves. Hope this helps, Thanks for Watching!

      No problem, To replace the hinges 250$ is completely acceptable thats probably a 2 hour labor rate. Changing the hinges is more involved. What size are the washers? 3/'8'? i don't want to have tho take a screw out and go get a washer

    • @2RCPRODUCTIONS
      @2RCPRODUCTIONS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      13 mm head like a 5/16 diameter bolt so 5/16 or 3/8 should work fine, 3/8 will have a little slop.

    So just to be clear. You only put 2 washers on the top bolt of the bottom hinge?

    • @2RCPRODUCTIONS
      @2RCPRODUCTIONS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Josh Welch No 2 washer on each bolt of the bottom hinge. So you are actually moving the whole bottom hinge out evenly 2 washer thickness. Thanks for Watching the video!!

    Just to double sure? you did loosen the top and bottom bolts up but you shimmed the top one only and not the bottom bolt, is that right ?

    • @2RCPRODUCTIONS
      @2RCPRODUCTIONS  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bottom hinge but both bolts on bottom hinge. Top hinge stays in same position. By shimming the hinge the door is forced to lift. Thanks for Watching!

    Like reading glasses....but the first prescriptions they give you make you blindER. They should Never prescribe a non bifocal given to 40+ eyes like they do. Regular one lens makes eyes lazy. The smaller reading glasses the better to. I keep a bi focal safety pair around for working since reading (small) are not safe enough. Dang nice video.

    Will this fix a door that has a popping noise when opening ? The noise happens near the latch area ?

    • @2RCPRODUCTIONS
      @2RCPRODUCTIONS  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wd 40 should take care of that for a while. My Sons car will do that when the hinges get dry.

    Did you use 2 on top and 2 on bottom? Of the bottom hinge?

    • @2RCPRODUCTIONS
      @2RCPRODUCTIONS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      josiah gomez No, if you use 2 on top and 2 on bottom it won't lift the door, you would just push the door outward evenly. Just shim the bottom to lift the door at the catch. Thanks for Watching!
