    I was 21 and in downtown Toronto with a few friends. We were walking down the street and saw a crowd of people in front of a window of TVs all playing the news. People were crying. A homeless woman told me Diana had died in a car accident. We cried together - I tried to buy her dinner but she wouldn't let me and opted for a tube of hand cream and a hug. I'll never forget that. The fact that a woman who was struggling so terribly was still devastated that Princess Diana had died. The power of her presence in the world was staggering.

    • @JimDownWell

      The news would have been announced around 11pm Toronto time. Did they just leave TVs running all night in that window?

      @@SandiByrd no wonder television’s are so expensive then. Leaving them on all night, they have to recoup the energy bills somehow - namely, from the customer.
      But surely, with numerous sets on, in a big department store all night, there must be some sizeable risk of electrical fires.

    I remember sitting at home late in the evening when the news came on about Diana's accident. I was so upset and stayed up several hours watching the different news reports, people were unclear about what her condition was, and I finally went to bed when she had arrived at the hospital. The next morning I woke up and went to get the morning paper in my driveway. I looked down at it, and I could see the headline that Diana had died. I broke down sobbing right there in the middle of the driveway. The day of her funeral, I stayed all day in the bedroom watching her funeral and sobbing. I've never broken down over someone I've never met, until Diana. Her death tore me up completely.

    I think everyone remembers where they were when this tragic news broke. I was 18 and lying on my parents sofa with tonsillitis. I turned on the tv and thought this was some very bad prank, until I realised she had in fact died. Watching Harry’s wedding recently, Diana would have been so very proud of her boy!

    I was 16 years of age at the time. It was afternoon in Australia. I was in my room when my brother came up and said, "Princess Diana has died". I ran downstairs and looked at the TV, and it was live footage of the wreckage of her car being removed from the tunnel. I went outside to tell my dad who was at his car. He'd heard it on the radio, and he didn't seem to care.

    Her title wasn’t “Princess Diana”, she was The Princess of Wales

    • @paulthomas281
      @paulthomas281 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @M C
      No one said her title was "Princess Diana" over, or in addition to, another. When one says "Princess Diana", one is not substituting her title for that. She can be called a number of ways all of which are perfectly legitimate, including "Princess Diana". Who is going to call Prince William the "Duke of Cambridge" all the time? He is called Prince William far more often (even in official reporting), and for good reasons, one of which is to endear him to the public.
      Even for the most official of purposes, such as the throne speech, all the media will say "Queen Elizabeth is giving the throne speech", or "The Queen is giving the throne speech", not "Elizabeth II Queen of the UK of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is giving the throne speech". Reporting Diana's death with a mix of "Princess Diana" and "Diana, Princess of Wales" is expected and natural. When reporting her death in one short sentence as "---- is dead.", "---- has died.", ... yes, it should be "Diana, Princess of Wales". But the newsreader in this segment used "Princess Diana" in her announcement at the very beginning as part of a longer sentence, " ----- has been killed in that car crash in Paris...". Saying "Princess Diana" here is fine... Sorry the newsreader did say "Diana, Princess of Wales" at the beginning too. But, back to the point, there is no problem with the title of the video either: "Kay Burley announces ... of Princess Diana on Sky News in 1997". Or anywhere else for that matter.

    I was 27 years old and working as a secretary when I heard the news of Diana's car crash and death I watched it on my portable tv in my bedroom. In 97 I lived at home with my parents, the time was about 1pm I think when it came on the news that she had died. I could not believe it I was shocked that someone so kind and caring and beautiful had died in the paris tunnel in a car. I stayed up most of night till about 4am and watched it all unfolding on bbc and ITV stations. When I got up in morning my dad said princess Diana's died in a car crash I said yes dad I heard on news last night I know my dad had been watching news all night long I cried I couldn't believe it my dad said the peoples princess is dead Margaret. I think my mum was in the kitchen cooking breakfast she was in tears I think me and my mum both cried it was heartbreaking. We all watched the news all day it was such a sad day I cant really remember what else we did that day. I still think of Diana to this day it still makes me cry when I watch anything she is in on tv. I loved ❤ princess diana and still ❤ her to this day ❤❤❤❤
