    Thank you for your review. I realized how much I missed my Seiko Marinemaster SBDX001 and SBDB001. So out of the blue, I decided to buy both of them back at SBDX017, and SBDB011 this week, sunk in almost $6g for the two of them. Now they both come with Diashield which I cannot tell at all, I don't see the difference in terms of color of the metal. You are definitely right about these Marinemasters, they are very well built and the moment I realized the new SLA021 does not have Marinemaster written across the dial, I had to find the latest SBDX017 and just buy one before it is all gone! Great Review!!!

    Dude, your a bit of a legend for your honest and spot on assessment at the end. I also have an mm300 and i pretty much agree with you 100%, its a stunning watch that is almost perfect aesthetically but as you said it has those few flaws that really should have been addressed in the updated model you bought. the addition of diashield, whilst nice, definitely wasnt needed ahead of things like a better bracelet and clasp, sapphire and adjusted movt. A ti option would be killer as well since the watch wears very top heavy for its size.
    Great job man!

      Thanks Albert, I appreciate that. Your comments are spot on.... It might be a long while before another update but let's hope Seiko addresses those points! Enjoy yours my friend 👍

      +TeensierPython - the spring drive gs divers are ruined with the ugly pr meters for mine otherwise id agree they are perfect otherwise. actually the quartz gs diver comes closest but the price is too much even given it has the bespoke thermo movt. the mm300 is actually perfect looking, its just outdated in the way its made and im still surprised seiko didnt give it the modern overhaul it deserves. the competition has moved well on...

    The crystal is actually pretty protected as it sits around 1mm below the bezel. Also I think it looks way superior over sapphire crystal (reflections are pretty massive, but its great under water and its clearly a wanted design aspect to this watch), less likely to shatter and it also lets 98% percent less sunlight bleach your dial compared to sapphire. Mine runs 5s+/d also, gotta love this watch.

    Great review Bruce, been waiting for this since your unboxing!
    Firstly wow, it's simply stunning. There's just something about all the little nuances Seiko have incorporated from their ( as you elegantly phrased) 'rich heritage' that just makes it so aesthetically appealing. I love the angles of the monocoque case and the fact it differs to most dive watches due to the innovative design to prevent helium from entering the case.
    With regards to the few negatives of the watch you pointed out I honestly believe Seiko didn't use sapphire crystal or regulate the movement not for practical diving reasons but for a commercial ones. If they had done that the mm300 would have then been competing too closely with the Grand Seiko diver range and would have had a big impact on those sales. I believe (and think Seiko do too) a lot of potential grand Seiko diver customers would instead opt for the mm300 if it had sapphire crystal and or a regulated movement.
    I agree the X on the crown could have been thought out a bit better. A cool thing about it though is if you look closely it is in fact a 'P' and 'S' (ProSpex) that make up the X logo.
    All in all you can see why this watch is so revered by watch enthusiasts. It has a classic, vintage appearance derived from a strong diver heritage and this newer model like you pointed out is infused with the latest Seiko technology such as MEMS and the new LumiBrite.
    Again it was an excellent review and I look forward to seeing more of the sbdx017 on your channel.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jay K Jay, thanks for watching and for the comment, I think they are very valid points. I never noticed the P and S made up the logo before. Haha I like it a little more now!
      I know its easy to nit-pick and complain about what we wish brands or models would or wouldn't do. All in all this watch is wonderful, and I am happy to live with the little nuances that come along with it.
      More to come, cheers

    If Seiko added everything you are talking about it would be a $3000 watch and not a $2000 piece anymore. At $3K they would not sell nearly as many pieces as they do now....which is probably not a lot if we are being honest. It's also important to remember that this piece is a "throwback" to the 6159 so Seiko is looking to maintain the heritage to a degree and that is why the crystal is hardlex and why their is no sapphire or ceramic bezel and why the links on the bracelet are longer (although the 6159 didn't come with a bracelet AT ALL!). Frankly, the more I wear my MM300, the more amazed I am that it ONLY costs what it does.

    Hi, that's the best review of the MM I've see. Been wanting this watch for a few years now (am a big Seiko automatic fan). This review has helped me a lot, the only thing holding me back is there so hard to get hold of in the UK, I'd have to buy on line, and at this price I'd like to see it in the flesh first. Thanks again great review. P.S isn't the SKX just an incredible watch!! Never tire of wearing mine.

    Excellent review! Objective and to the point. Although I'm currently in love with my Omega Seamaster I'm a big fan of Seiko divers and I own a couple - an acquired taste indeed. I was actually very, very close to getting a Marinemaster but in the end I was turned off (forever) by the fact that it's not regulated while it has a mono-block construction. While I assume it would be possible to have it regulated, it would certainly have to go back to Seiko and personally I would hate to have my brand new diver watch taken apart!

    I'm pretty sure you can get the bezel buffed out if you wanted to spend the money. I think it's worth it. I already own two Seiko's my favorite is my Seiko SSC017P1 Diver in the blue accents. I plan on getting one of these Bad Boys in my collection. I also own my first Orient Orange MakoXL CEM7500-1M. I plan on getting a few more of the Orient's in my collection as well. I liked your video. It really helped with showing more of the watch and the description. Great video. Keep them coming. Happy Hunting.

    This is my second time watching you video. I do agree about you grading a B for it. Not to many people will like this BAD ASS Seiko time piece, but Not mine. I really like Seiko a lot after getting a few in my collection. I made up mind and decided to pull the trigger and get one. I will have to save for it cause I do not have a lot of money, but I think the more save the more I will appreciated it. So I'm on the hunt and I WILL own one. Your video was the turning point for me to appreciate Seiko's more and my Seiko SSC017P1 with the blue accents. Thank You Bro.

    What a fantastic and substantial review. Well done Bruce. It looks absolutely fantastic and I look forward to more videos about the Marine Master! The Sapphire and pins are disappointing at this price and I understand that they stand by the hardlex, but the added scratch resistance is just something your everyday wearer is expecting here I think. Even if it just consumer perception. Have a great weekend!

  • @jonnycasual2975

    Such a beautiful watch, Bruce. I know I'll get this eventually, just not sure when. My lone hesitation is the weight. I really prefer watches that weight 120 - 180 grams, and I think this is well over 200, but it sounds like it is comfortable nonetheless.
    By the way, a sapphire mod will probably cost you only $50-80.
    I think they upgraded the crown a few years ago, that the complaints were from older models.
    Don't worry about the little scratches...they bring character.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jonny Casual Thanks Jonny. It is pretty hefty. Taking it off the bracelet certainly sheds some weight. I'd like to get a nice brown leather to wear with it casually on occasion. Similar to what you are doing with your Breitling.
      I'd like to hear your thoughts on it when you do get one. I think it would go really well alongside your Omegas and Breitlings. A good black on black beauty you are currently lacking.
      Excited for your decade movie lists btw

      Yeah, I'm really lacking a black-on-black watch, at least since I sold my quartz Seamaster a couple months ago. And I agree that it would be a nice complement to the Omegas and Breitlings.

    Another great review. I really appreciate you doing a side by side comparison against the SKX, a watch I am very familiar with as I have several. I still believe this is still a bit too tall for my wrists. I'm also really digging the new SRP Turtles.

      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    After watching your review, I think getting a U1 was the right decision for me :) but I definitely am happy for you and your MM300! Also now I'm totally sure that a Grand Seiko for a dress watch is the way to go for you. It would suit your collection down to the ground!
    And I totally agree with you about the crown logo. Imagine they put the "X" on the dial. I would have cried!
    Sure you won't get a Sinn U1 in the near future? lol I'd love to see you review one...
    Anyway, keep up the great work! Subscribed!

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dominik, haha yes if they put the x on the dial that would be a deal breaker... Would have gone for the older 001. Thanks for subscribing and I'll keep the vids coming. I won't say no to a u1 in the future. I have great respect for Sinn and Damasko... But as you know I'm saving for a dress piece so it wouldn't be for a long while most likely. You should do a review when you get yours!

    Bruce, really terrific review, and one I've been looking for as I've been curious/intrigued by the MM300 for quite some time. Unfortunately,, I'm not sure if you pushed me closer to or farther from a purchase! I currently own an OM and a Blumo, both of which I love, especially the Blumo. Not sure if the value proposition is there for the MM,, if it's enough of an upgrade to justify the additional money. Thanks for the thought provoking vid!

    • @BruceWilliams

      +Romeo Toledo Thats the age old question haha! Marinemaster or Sumo. I've owned both (at different times, I sold my Sumo a couple years ago) and really can say both are excellent, and it comes down to preference. Personally I love the MM and don't see myself wearing a Sumo again if I had one back in my collection. The MM hogs my wrist time. Congrats on yours though. The sumo is imo the best value at around $400. Monster is a awesome watch too (had one of them years ago as well)

      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your very welcome Jeff, thanks for compliment. Although the mm is so independent, I could see the difficulty in owning the orient and sumo in connection with the mm. One or both would likely be sold due to lack of wear. I've not owned the orient, but I do like the mm more than the sumo I used to have

    • @jonnycasual2975
      @jonnycasual2975 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jeffrey McMahon I think it really is a matter of steps: From the Sumo up a step to the OSD, up a step to the MM300. Everything I've read says that there are so many little things about the MM300 that add up to it being in a different category. It may even be closer to a Seamaster than it is the OSD. But then again, so much of this is subjective.

    • @JeffreyMcMahon
      @JeffreyMcMahon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The gap isn't dramatic enough between the OSD and the MM300 for me to make the jump.

    • @jonnycasual2975
      @jonnycasual2975 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeffrey McMahon That is probably wise. I feel, though, that the MM300 has enough extra touches in terms of finishing to make it dramatic enough

    I was surprised to learn that the 8L35 movement doesn't have chronometer specifications. The appeal to me for this watch was mainly the movement as I thought it was more or less as accurate as the 9S movement of the Grand Seiko collection. A quick research learned that the accuracy is stated between +15 and -10 seconds which leaves a little to be desired imo. Seiko states that the accuracy of the 6R15 movement is between +25 and -15 seconds which is relative good given the much cheaper price tag.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, they don't submit it for Chronometer certification and the specs sound a little ridiculous. Rest assured its a high quality movement with the same mems tech as the 9s Grand Seiko calibers. It is rather unfinished but very well designed and put together. My 8l always ran within Chronometer specs and had the 4hertz freqency the 6rs dont. Id pick a 8l35 over a similarly priced eta without hesitation

    Nice review Bruce. Very cool watch. Didn't know about the hand painted lume, neat touch. Love the design of the case with the integrated back and interesting beveling. Was a bit surprised that it doesn't have a sapphire crystal - maybe a mod company can provide one? I don't own a Seiko diver but like you recommend I'm thinking Sumo/Blumo to start with. Cheers, John

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for commenting John. Yes a sapphire mod is a pretty easy one to find. I guess a lot of people do it. I definitely think sumo is the way to go to start. It has a good movement, incredible finishing and killer lume- all things Seiko is great at. I think it's the best bang for buck diver under 500. Other one to consider is a new Seiko nicknamed the turtle. It's a remake of a popular vintage design. I'll probably end up getting the srp775

      +Manmeet Anand that's awesome I'm happy for you! Yes I would really like Seiko to reexamine the bracelet and update it with nice screw links. I wear my mm on bracelet most, then the factory rubber, then occasionally on NATO, leather, and a polished mesh. Looks awesome on all of them!

    Will you be able to compare this to the old mm300? (Especially the lume)
    I am afraid that the new lume is too green for me and I prefer a white or even a beige one on the old mm300
    But don't know if the difference in colour is really that significant
    I wish I can buy an old mm right now but I am still saving up and I will probably buy an mm in May when I visit Japan
    Hope I can still find a brand new old version
    Anyway a great review!

    Good review, I've been mulling the MM for years but still resisting due to my 8" wrists and concern about the small dial.
    I shopped eBay for years for an SBDD001 which I had never seen prior to that and am ecstatic with it because it is is closer to 46mm and suits my wrist well. BTW you should read up about chronometer certification and Seiko's philosophy and history in this subject. There are good reasons for Seiko NOT pursuing this certification...read up you will be amazed.

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does have a pretty small dial proportionally speaking. I am familiar with COSC requirements as well as Seiko's history with chronometers and the 8l movement. Great comment

  • @bobberg882

    Bruce, I think you can give this an A-. I have this watch because it's not a Rolex somewhat hard to get. Just because the movement isn't COSC I can live without a sapphire. Just me though. Your thoughts by the B is what you say. Thanks

    • @captlove8788
      @captlove8788 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My thought is exactly as Bruce, this watch would’ve got an A- or even a solid A, had it got just a regulated movement(no need to be certified by COSC) (my watch gains 11 second per day consistently) and a saphire. If Seiko can put those features in much cheaper watches, then why not on this legendary model?!?
      As it is a monocoque case, which just makes it more difficult to adjust for accuracy.

      Thanks, yes this is the newer version. The main differences are: the new one has diashield coating, new longer lasting lume, a signed prospex crown, mems manufacturing in the movement, and a metal keeper on the included rubber strap. I love mine!

    Hi Bruce, I just don't understand Seiko's thought process when they designed the mm300 (sbdx001) which I own, I am referring to the crown thread operation it really is the heart in the mouth time when threading back which tends to come to a stop way before full lock down, as I am not heavy handed I unscrew and start again, the crown operation on my sumo is a delight to use and a much cheaper watch just madness and in a way puts me of the watch plus wearing it too as I don't then have to face the crown issue shame really.

    Hi Bruce, excellent review. Have you ever conceded the Seiko SBDC029 Titanium watch?

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Philip Seiler Philip, yes I owned a 'Shogun' a couple years ago (I had the original sbdc007) and unfortunately I didn't enjoy it as much as others have. It seems to be very respected in the watch-forums. The one I owned scratched fairly easily even with the diashield coating (most likely because it is titanium) I will admit it is very light, and comfortable but there were a few things that kept me from really liking it. The bezel action felt sticky and not well made (again don't know if it was a titanium on steel connection) and $800 is a lot to pay for that movement. I was actually much happier with the Sumo than the shogun, (same movement, same excellent finish work, same great lume, half the price) Thanks for asking!

    Wonderful review!
    A really manly watch! Just great, functional, substantial, tough design without being ridiculously bulky or gaudy. Really interesting case design... conservative enough to look classic, tasteful but also unique and very "seiko" looking. Interesting that there's really almost no crown guard for being otherwise a really tank-like design.
    Cons: Disappointing case back. Lack of sapphire (yet again, but that's seiko)
    Pros: I'm loving the design. The tall profile. All the cons are small picky things that many people can ignore... (ie. questionable bracelet, no sapphire, etc)

    Nice review. The MM300 looks nicely finished but I've never been a big fan. I tried it on at the Seiko boutique and it wears very big and tall. Plus looks a bit too similar to a submariner or other typical diver for me, I prefer the unique looks of the Tuna or the value proposition of the SKX.

    FAQ when wearing a sub, usually in this exact order:
    1) Is that a Rolex?

    4) You spend THAT much on a watch?!

    Thats a stunning watch, beautiful and rock solid. When you have a 2k seiko, you know it will survive a nuclear blast. Too bad about the crystal, but i know for a fact that hardlex is one tough sob. Like you say, the bracelet could be a bit better, but it looks solid enough. Maybe a dumb question, if you have to service it how do you reach the movement? Great watch with bags of character

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not a dumb question at all. You have to take off the crystal, hands, dial, and access the movement through the top. Its not ideal. Its also not a common movement, so apart from Seiko there is only one other place I would feel confident sending the watch to for a routine service

    On the Seiya website they have put a disclaimer 'The chapter ring and index & bezel index and face index not being aligned perfectly. In general, Seiko's screw down crowns are not smooth as Swiss manufactures'. Bruce, does your piece show any signs of this? Slightly puts you off ordering one!

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I've seen the disclaimer. As many things great as Seiko does they do seem to have trouble with getting the bezel/chapter ring to line up. Mine lines up perfectly but I have seen them misaligned on lesser priced models. My turtle is really off

    More of the MM300 please!
    One thing. You mentioned about having good experiences with Hardlex Crystal even though you would prefer sapphire.. What did you mean by this? Please share you stories :)

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +wjdghaks No problem! I do prefer sapphire for the most part. However Seiko's hardlex crystal, to me, is just as clear as a sapphire and I've only managed to scratch one over the years. I've had a lot of the divers (SKX, Turtle, Monster, Sumo, Shogun, MM) and I'm pretty tough on my watches, I never baby them or hold back. Of them all I've only managed to put a hairline mark on my SKX. I believe the more expensive models also have a higher grade hardlex with anti-reflective treatment so it looks just as sharp as sapphire. So, from my experiences with the various hardlex crystals over the years..... overall very positive, and completely in line with my experiences with Sapphire (only put a hairline or two in those types as well) They survive my every activity and abuse with flying colors :)

  • @DeeeGeee301
    @DeeeGeee301 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    After watching this review for the 5th time by now, I forgot to mention that I think that the Hardlex crystal is not a negative. I think it has better optical attributes to it and it is more shatter proof than sapphire. I think you can complain about it once you managed to get it scratched up. Though I haven't heard of one scratched Hardlex crystal (in the MM300) yet. Seiko uses a higher grade of Hardlex in their higher end models. It's definitely not the same as in their SKX line. Furthermore it's in Seikos DNA and I like that they try to approach the whole crystal matter differently. We are just used to sapphire but that doesn't mean it's the only way to go IMO.
    The second thing I would like to add is that a big online watch seller I contacted recently asked Seiko about the 8L35 movement and he assured me that Seiko themselves said that they DO regulate the movement (by now)! So it isn't unregulated (anymore).
    Hope this helps you to now love the MM even more :)

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks! I did not know about varying hardlex grades or that Seiko starter adjusting the movements. Awesome! I've owned many hardlex over the years and only managed to scratch one (my skx recently) and yes I do love it more.... It's one of those watches you enjoy the more you wear and learn about it. Hope you enjoy the same with your incoming. Thanks mu friend

    Between this and the grand seiko sbgr051 which do you advise me to buy for a good watch that i will keep my entire life , i kinda like the GS more than any of the watches , is absolutely perfect but it will keep the shining through time... and there is a big difference of price like 1200 or 1400 $ between them

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stoica Mihai Yes, very big jump in price. I think both are generational quality. But that being said the SBGR I think makes a better case for a 'forever' watch. It has a traditional 37mm size, and absolutely exquisite finish work. The movement is nicer as well- beautifully decorated with a 72 hour power reserve and adjusted to 6 positions and temps. (Higher than COSC standards) So they both would last a lifetime, but I think the GS would weather the time in a more timeless way. I'm heavily considering the sbgr053 for myself)

    Great review how do u compare this with the Orient saturation diver

    • @BruceWilliams
      @BruceWilliams  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cannibal Ronny Thanks, I appreciate that. To be honest I've never handled the OSD in person. So my opinion is just based on what I've read/seen. I like the Orient a lot and think what you get for the price is incredible. I considered it briefly for myself but knew from reviews it would be too big for me. The heft and height are very significant. As far as I can tell the finishing is excellent and I like the pr complication. If you bought one you would be getting great value and a really nice tool watch. But for my preferences (size/design/history) I much prefer the MM. As far as spec wise though they are very comparable, they even have the same ratcheting clasp mechanism. Lastly I don't know much about the movement Orient uses, but I do know the 8L35 in the Seiko is incredible. 28800 BPH, 50 hr power reserve, large balance assembly with a proprietary hairspring and lossier inner coil. Mine is running +2-3 sec per day.
