@@jackbuckleyautoyou can get a solid 100k miles out of any car. I would bet that car was test drove or ragged or money shifted by someone while in the dealership possession. I know this because i took my m235i in for first oil change at a dealer. When they gave me the car back it took 40 min for the guy at the dealer to get the car while i waited after i paid the invoice. When the rubber guy pulled up in my car he turned it off as i walked up to it to leave. I thought that was sus so i popped the hood and it was molten hot. I touched the rear tires and they were burning hot and sticky. I got the manager after I started the car to drive it around the lot to get the tire pressure gauge to read. On the m they had temps of the tires too. I documented it all and showed the manager the car was ragged and tires were at 165f in the rear and 135f in yhe front and the oil temps were 225. There is no way to achieve that without ragging out the car or doing doughnuts. Sure enough they fired the car wash guy for doing doughnuts in my dam car for like 45min. Then a week later i saw a puddle of oil under my car in the garage. I pop the hood and oil was sprayed everywhere because the oil filter wasnt tightened. If i didn’t document what happened at the dealer and get the manager to fess up the lemon law wouldn’t have worked. They got an engineer from bmw to rebuild my engine that had 2000miles on it that i babied the whole time and some douche bag at the dealership ruined the car. It took a shit load of trips to the dealer to have them clean up the oil that sprayed. They further messed up the car by power washing the engine. This was a brand new paid in full cash m235i 2015 model. I waited 6 months for delivery. The lemon law worked for me because i documented they power washed the entire engine. Then a week after that it went into limp mode. Thats when the engineer came from bmw and pulled the engine. I got the car back and drove it with no issues for 60k miles. I traded it for the gr86 earlier this year. I made sure and receive the car fresh off the truck as it was unloaded. Nobody touched it i left with the plastic still on the seats and car. No dealer has or will touch my gr86. All the basic maintenance is done at a local tuning shop or my garage. Its a beast. The boxer motor is the reason it drives and handles the way it does. You got a dealership fun bagged car dude. The car is fine its user error. I changed the oil on mine at 250 miles with motul 5w30 and again at 1000. Its tits man bummer about your story but the car is solid. Not sure about the oil pressure thing on track but as road car its way more fun than my m235. That car was also amazing but it was heavy and felt way different in corners. I bet the dealer and the manufacturer can tell the exact time someone bags a car from the computer and i bet you someone didnt respect that car at the dealership.
All modern cars are cheaply built with severe cost cutting. All manufacturers are showing engines with machining debris that has not been properly cleaned out including Toyota. Boycott new cars, stick with the old.

Its interesting how many have had issues and many have had zero issues. Someone made it to 150k miles on it with no problems at all aside from regular maintenance from what I heard. For my 86, I have yet to encounter any issues and its been a perfect car for my daily. I have had my GR86 for a little over 2 years now with no issues at all doing regular maintenance. Really sad to see this kind of shit happening to people.

It is a lemon. If it falls under factory warranty then keep taking back to dealer. That's why we buy a new ones. It is part of the peice of mind. With any sports car ownership always have a backup solid backup.

I won't lie. My local Autonation also has really bad reviews. They sell lemons straight up for real cheap. This is highly unfortunate though. I couldn't imagine the despair on it breaking down just 1 time, id be done with Suburu more than Toyota though, since this is just a BRZ rebadged. I wouldn't blame you for having PTSD seeing a Toyota badge on principal at this point however.

I was considering this car before getting my miata and I consider both to be very important cars for being some of the only lightweight options out there... Scammy dealerships are one thing but Toyota as a company has been rather shameful lately.

They tell you literally anything to convince you the sale is good, to get you in a vulnerable situation, then up the costs and say they couldn't get the quoted deal. The way they talk, their body language, mannerisms, you know its all a show. Its literally people upselling you for $$$, by any means. One told me I could drive it off the lot and my loan went through, then as im 5 minutes away (on an hour long drive) he calls me, tells me its actually in the shop, and that I would have to put $1000 down for them to hold it, before I have even test drove it. F*** dealerships.

Subaru performance engine pretty much known to blow up, I had an NA 2.2 for a daily never beat on always oil change, blew up. Only car ive ever had to fail an engine.
No, they aren't.. I've owned one for 17 years and been around them since I've been able to drive. The only problems Subaru engines have is when owners modify them without the proper tuning.

Cant say I have had even close to the same experience. My 2022 BRZ has been flawless. Tons of mods, FBO, flex fuel tuned, track driven, and just plain beat on. Car has been 100% perfect for 3 years (late 2021 purchase) now. The car in this video was beat to shit and broken. That is obviously why somebody traded it in. It was likely tuned at some point and suffered detonation damage. That will cause cylinder wash, spark plug fouling, and misfires. Idk what repairs the shop told you they did, but in that short period of time they certainly didnt replace the engine or any internal components.
@jrkustomz5538 No its not because they BOTH use Toyota tuning. They use a Toyota D4S fuel injection system and the ECU is a Toyota ECU. Has nothing to do with tuning. It has EVERYTHING to do with lazy, neglectful owners that dont know how to check their oil.

I am on several forums, social groups etc. I can promise you my car is driven harder and has more miles than 90% of all 2nd gen cars out there. Either my car is a unicorn or there a lot of bad owners who think they can treat it like a camry and never open the hood. It is NOT the same FA24 as all the others. Internals are completely different. Rods, pistons, bearings, valve springs, cams, high pressure fuel pump, harmonic balancer, air oil separator design are just a few things that are completely different between a low revving WRX FA24 and a high RPM BRZ FA 24. "I dont know what a tein is" 🤣🤣🤣

Hmmm, besides the usual used car precautions? I would say buy the absolute best Miata you can afford even if you gotta travel for it, an LSD equipped car is a MUST, depending on generation you’ll run into only minor issues but the early ND1’s have manual transmission issues so people typically swap the NC trans into the car, NB’s seem to be a tad more temperamental in the reliability department for some odd reason I know 2 people who have owned 3 different NB’s with different issues. Now, a lot of people will hate me for this but the NC2/3 is the best generation for people who are looking for the ‘whole package’ because a lot of young people end up wanting an NA then find out it’s a rattle trap with no power… but hey they have charm! Idk if that answers your question but they are the most raced car on the planet, super reliable, amazing mpg, parts are everywhere & it’s a very beloved platform so a ton of parts & knowledge exists for these little bundles of joy!

The words friends and dealerships can't ever coexist. But in regards to Toyota as a brand, they're really just under the microscope compared to other brands. Unfortunately, they're not handling the warranty claims well, just like Intel (if you know).

There are no friends in business. During big transactions any feelings and attachments should be put aside. If they exist, they will always be used as an asset against you.
My 2023 GR86 10th Anniversary manual is awesome. My clutch went out at 2,000 miles of street driving. Dealer agreed to cover the parts but I had to submit a separate claim for labor to the Toyota corporate via their web site which was approved. 10,000 miles and 2 years later car drives great.
I traded my m235i for the gr86 and its been pretty amazing so far. You got either a lemon or someone at the dealer ragged out the car before you bought it

I almost bought one of these but ended up going for an E210 Corolla 6MT instead (easier with kids). No issues and loving the mod support. Looks like I dodged a bullet with the GR86. Sad really. It was my dream car too.
Next time you purchase a vehicle, ask the following and make sure you receive their response digitally over email: 1. If you have to do an engine tear down (do any work on the engine, gear box, transmission or any components of the vehicle) to determine if it's a warrantyable issue - who is responsible for that cost? 2. Are there any components of the car that I would have to pay a cost to diagnose an issue? 3. Under this warranty, what am I NOT covered for? In your situation, you should be covered under warranty regardless. Contact your lawyer/solicitor and get a letter/email sent out.
I had a 2015 FRS RS1 that was nice stock and then turbo changed it, then upgrade the turbo kit, then built(not blew) the engine and it make 480whp 360tq and never had an issue with it. Was the best car I owned and wished I still had it. Everyone's quality degrades over time.

I had a Subaru BRZ that lasted me several years without a hitch. Now I have a WRX that have yet to give me any trouble. It's all dependent on the history of the car, and WHERE you got it. When buying pre-owned, get a certified pre-owned example if you can. AND an extended warranty.
The first gen BRZ/86's don't have the oil starvation issue, At least not like to newer ones. The first generation oil "starvation" is split second and extremely minor.
Insane to me how my Supra (BMW) has been the most reliable GR car so far. I’d love to get a GR Corolla or 86, but constantly seeing these issues come up is really pushing me away. I wish you the best.
My 2013 Toyota 86 engine blew in May this year (Australia) 15km/h slowing down for a roundabout. As I had UEL headers and an ECUtek tune, Toyota won't touch it.
I feel you. I took the chance to buy a 2013 WRX that was listed for a really good deal. Didn't have a warrantly. I had no car because my other impreza had shit the bed (Over 200k miles). The dealer managed to cover up a ton of issues that have had it down in my garage for almost 7 months. I don't have the money to fix it nor buy a new car, so I've been ride sharing to college classes for months. I had my motorcycle over the summer, but not only is it very cold where I am now but someone vandalized it and I had to total it through insurance, and I'm waiting for my OSHP inspection.
Crazy that I relate to this. I have a Corolla Hatchback that is having numerous issues that shouldn’t be happening for a Toyota. Broken motor mounts at 47k miles, slave cylinder failure at 46k (that many have reported along with clutch failures), and now a noisy ISB. I drove my 180k mile RSX more spiritedly than my Corolla and that thing did not have the issues my car currently has
There was a valve spring recall, Although when I searched , I couldn't seem to find any actual instances of the springs failing. The FA20 does have an extremely minor oil starvation issue with high-speed right hand turns but it's literally a split second and the starvation is so little that it doesn't really do anything.
Dont stop applying pressure tell them youll tell the bbb i had a similar situation but i had bought a tlx my dream car from-a chevy dealership and 1 day after my engine blew up and they where taking forever to give me a answer so i kept just showing up to the dealer and asking for a solution and at the end of the day i got a check for all my money back and i had no warranty or anything i used that to buy my new tlx just dont stop applying pressure and threaten to report to the better business bureau and get your money back idk if you financed it or not but i also had my credit union apply pressure on them because i found out they work together often with that particular chevy dealership
Man I got a 24 brz and with 3k miles and it’s going good, I’m sorry you got the Toyota version. I was gonna get that one as well but when I went to the dealer after doing research I had a feeling Subaru was the better option even though people prefer the Toyota version.( I’ve had it since august of 2024)
Just wanted to express my regards for how that car was supposed to be your greatest dreams and marking a triumphant return only to have it be your worst nightmare. I really feel a lot of empathy for you because that's practically the story of my life. Relationship issues, both platonic and romantic, material issues, other things. You've been through a lot and I just wanna say you're very strong for holding it together to this point. I'm wishing and praying for luck on your side to get this all sorted out.
I hope you've learned your lesson to not trust any dealership. There might be a handful of good ones out there, but 99% of them are just there to rip you tf off and take your money. Buy used and find a honest, reliable local mechanic, or just learn to work on it yourself.
I bought a 2023 GR Supra and I absolutely love it. Gas mileage is terrible. Can’t really get on it without polluting the world but it’s still the greatest. Sorry for your loss

It's less the dealers faults and more the manufactures fault. I used to work at a dealership as a tech. The screw over the mechanic doing all the warranty work. Most warranty to work is like paid at 50% rate. So the manufactures makes a fault like your engine then some poor mechanic has to eat it. And then since it had several come backs they are getting even paid less. The manufactures should cover the dealership and the tech at full pay scale so they can give good service to the customers.

Turboed 485WHP on E85 first gen FR-S still running strong since 2015 ^_^. Will never buy this car if my life depends on it. Hope you get something done about this. I know three people whose engine blew up within the first 6 months hehe.
Lemon Law the car. Sorry to hear about engine problems on a 2023 GR86. Its sketchy anyway because it has a Subaru engine but its a Toyota. You really think the Toyota technicians want to work on a Subaru engine ? I think the Toyota Supra is in that same boat with the BMW engine. Mechanics don't like to work on cross breed cars.
Feel bad for you my friend. I've owned this car for over two years now and have not had any issues, but I did buy it brand new, have not modified it and do not track it. Did you get yours used, or was it also new straight from Toyota? Either way, hoping things improve and they either finally correct the issues, or the legal process does some justice for you.
I think maybe it might just be that car, I bought a brand new GR 86 a little over a year ago and I’ve never had any issues with mine, I take good care of it, take it in for it scheduled maintenance and I’ve even taken it on 2 shortes separate Multi Day Road trips and it still works perfectly fine no issues, just a faulty car from the start.

I would echo the comments and try for lemon law. Recover financially as much as possible. The car was obviously never fixed right the first time, no engine should blow within a week. Also, toyota dealer techs arent nearly as experienced with boxers as Subaru techs. This really sucks and i feel for u, but kudos to u for being honest and realizing U had made a bad financial decision swayed by emotions. Ull almost never see other TH-camrs admit that. They would just bash the manufacturer only. U definitely paid too much for this car at $40k. My 23 brz limited was brand new OTD under $35k
If I had to guess based on the description you mentioned, it sounds like the engine keeps losing compression in different cylinders. I'm guessing it's valvetrain related and they keep repairing the engine (swapping cylinder heads most likely). Lemon law varies by state but I would definitely get in touch with your state's attorney general or secretary of state and see exactly what your rights are. I would insist on a brand new engine, or I would take them to court. Having them just put a full motor in it at this point is likely easier for everyone.
I’m currently in Okinawa, Japan. The JDM 86s are not having as many mechanical failures as the American specs. I’m curious if this is an assembly line fault?
Im in a lemon law lawsuit with my tesla, you can have them sure for the entire cost of the car plus registration and sales tax and on top 2x the cost of the car for hardship and emotional pain
I bought a used 2013 Scion FRS with 40k miles . I owned the car for three years , even when you have all schedule maintence done on the car it doesnt matter . when my car got 88k miles i noticed a knock rattle sound coming from the engine . I had the car checked out and was informed to get rid of car asap .
I had a 2015 series blue and it was amazing and reliable back then I think… I feel like the quality dropped when they refreshed it and put new gearing in it, in 2017 I think but it really got bad when they came out with the current gen. Seems like it would be amazing if Toyota would just stick to the basics of making cars reliable and serviceable for high miles… instead of fixing problems they come out with even more new vehicles that have different problems… instead of servicing the customers who already bought cars, they go after new ones to fuck over. They use to make a few cars and when something was wrong, they would put more resources into fixing what they already had and refining it for years and ending up with a car that has been engineered to run forever. Now their lineup has like 50 different cars and none of them are good investments.
I used to own a premium 2022 86 and I sold it after 9 months. The car out of the factory just didn't feel right. The power delivery was inconsistent, shifting felt sloppy, the clutch was unresponsive. I felt like toyota needs to revamp this car immediately because most the gr86 owner I know are leaving this platform for something else like the mx-5 or wrx.
Sorry to hear about your Toyota, but I feel for you even more with the BMW-it may bring its own headaches. I had a used 2010 BMW 125i (50k miles), and it was a constant struggle with reliability. My dealership quoted $10k to fix its issues, nearly as much as the car cost! Thankfully, a former BMW engineer with his own workshop helped me out for less, but the stress was still there despite how good that straight-six sounded. Now, I’m driving a used Miata ND2 with zero issues, and I’m done with German cars for life after that experience and sticking to Mazda. Regardless, I hope your old beemer doesn't have issues and I wish you the best of luck!

That's what happens when a new car isn't broken in properly. They ain't playing when they say baby that engine for 1,000. It's more like 1,500 on 0w20. 2,000 on 0w16. By the time you hit 1,500-2,000 you should be on your 2nd oil change otherwise all that debris microwelds to the internals. Of course RTV in the pickup could have been an issue too.
Man, this sucks to hear. I owned a 2014 BRZ Limited up until a couple years ago when I bought my new Nissan Z, and they are fun as hell. Slow, sure, but they corner like monsters and are super easy to control even when you kick the back end out. Even though my Z makes double the power, is more modern and has more creature comforts, I still miss my BRZ sometimes. I hope you get this sorted. It sounds like that dealership definitely scammed you. Someone probably screwed the engine on this thing, they got it, did a quick patch job and resold it in bad faith. No way it blew up that many times under normal driving conditions unless it was just barely hanging on from day one.
It's not just the expensive Toyota models that have issues. My 2024 Corolla LE is a piece of junk, literally falling apart with only 3000 miles on it. Problems with the CVT transmission: rough shifting, choppy acceleration, weird noises from the suspension, steering and dash, poor quality plastics and exterior paint.

I have a 93 toyota mr2 and 04 wrx wagon. 200k miles on them and they work well. Cheap cars. I have a hard time finding newer cars... financially practical. I've had a few new cars in past. I do want a 2020 ND miata someday. I like the brz because I like rwd and boxer turbos. I can't bring myself to buy new cars. I'd rather gamble, buy a 5k old used car and it fix it up.
I wanted to buy a new BRZ/GR86, but couldn't find one on the lot, and was told I could order one and wait 3 months to get it. I gave up and bought a MINI Cooper S instead. People told me you will regret buying a MINI, but it's been problem free for over a year now. Both MINI and BMW's reliability has been among the best lately. Just the opposite for Toyota. If Toyota keeps this up they are going to start losing customers big time.
Wow what a terrible experience to go through! A new car should be a happy experience . I bought a 2015 FR-S new and beat the snot out of it for 4 years 50,000 miles with zero problems. Never went back to the dealer for anything but maintenance. This is obviously a lemon and I’m surprised Toyota doesn’t stand behind their product. Maybe Subaru needs to step up and admit a design issue. I remember the early FR-S’s and BRZ’s having engine problems , valve springs, but they were warrantied . I have a new Miata now and their 2.0 is a much smoother revving engine but I’ve heard some people are having transmission failures early on. Hope I have a good one. Seems like every new car has some issues lately.
@wallyy6223 doesn't matter, came with full certifications from Autonation. Perfect bill of health with supposedly 0 prior issues, according to them. So either this is a Lemon, or they sold me a faulty car and lied about it/didn't check it properly. Either way, not my fault

Whatever bill of health or mechanical check ups are BS and generally only inspect the obvious to the eye. I have had honda, mazda, Acura, honda that I myself abused more than anything I can think of including drifting and drag race with on some cars double the stock HP and never had a failure.. if you mean engine abuse don't change your oil that's one thing if you mean driving the hell out of a car is abuse that is not real.. a Miata I had had over 250k and hit redline every day and nothing happened, same thing with my Acura GSR 8k all day nothing ever happened at over 200k.. the only engine abuse I can think of that can be done to a car is drive it in one gear at redline the whole time as that would overheat the oil and cooling capacity..

Maybe it a rtv issue and the oil doesnt flow properly anymore causing stuff to fail. They can keep fixing watever fails but if a small clog remains somwhere in the engine it will keep breaking again and again. Complete engine teardown and cleaning everything out is wat you need by someone who knows how to do it, takes his time and does apply the new rtv correctly.
You was better off keeping the 2022 GR86… but despite this current gen having RTV issues, I’m surprised these are blowing up alot these days. I always liked the previous gen more than the new ones… they seem more reliable. I’m glad I saw this video because I was debating on buying one but now idk.
Don't they have a lemon law where you live? I wouldn't take that car back as a free paperweight. Hope you can rectify this. I have a 2013 FR-S I bought used at Carmax. I can't say enough good about them and the transaction and support. E.g their valet dented the car. They admitted fault and gave me a free smaller car from their lot to drive 'til they had the work done. It had a few coach oriented rattles somewhere inside & Toyota gave me a free rental 'til they fixed it. Took 'em 2 weeks! So... in spite of the "first world" problems, I feel I got good service and support from both Carmax and Toyota. I live in SoCal.
Come on over to the BMW g42 platform. B48 and B58 are both absolutely great engines. Reliable, fuel efficient, powerful, and very tuner friendly. I got a 230i with well over 300hp and 350 tq with a simple piggyback, I absolutely waffle stomp GR Corolla and civic type R for less money, and I still have RWD, better driving dynamics and nicer interior.
Not sure if you checked (I’m sure you have) but I mean there is a huge problem With these cars and oil starvation due to the access of RTV the use getting caught in the pickup tube, that could be why each engine blows up on you mane
I'm so sorry about your experience with that car. Cars should be a source of joy with the occasional frustration or added expense, not the nightmare that you've lived the past 3 months. I hope you can get toyota to take the car back, as I wouldn't have any trust in the car left at this point. And then I hope you can use that money to find something that makes you happy.

@@jackbuckleyautoyou can get a solid 100k miles out of any car. I would bet that car was test drove or ragged or money shifted by someone while in the dealership possession. I know this because i took my m235i in for first oil change at a dealer. When they gave me the car back it took 40 min for the guy at the dealer to get the car while i waited after i paid the invoice. When the rubber guy pulled up in my car he turned it off as i walked up to it to leave. I thought that was sus so i popped the hood and it was molten hot. I touched the rear tires and they were burning hot and sticky. I got the manager after I started the car to drive it around the lot to get the tire pressure gauge to read. On the m they had temps of the tires too. I documented it all and showed the manager the car was ragged and tires were at 165f in the rear and 135f in yhe front and the oil temps were 225. There is no way to achieve that without ragging out the car or doing doughnuts. Sure enough they fired the car wash guy for doing doughnuts in my dam car for like 45min. Then a week later i saw a puddle of oil under my car in the garage. I pop the hood and oil was sprayed everywhere because the oil filter wasnt tightened. If i didn’t document what happened at the dealer and get the manager to fess up the lemon law wouldn’t have worked. They got an engineer from bmw to rebuild my engine that had 2000miles on it that i babied the whole time and some douche bag at the dealership ruined the car. It took a shit load of trips to the dealer to have them clean up the oil that sprayed. They further messed up the car by power washing the engine. This was a brand new paid in full cash m235i 2015 model. I waited 6 months for delivery. The lemon law worked for me because i documented they power washed the entire engine. Then a week after that it went into limp mode. Thats when the engineer came from bmw and pulled the engine. I got the car back and drove it with no issues for 60k miles. I traded it for the gr86 earlier this year. I made sure and receive the car fresh off the truck as it was unloaded. Nobody touched it i left with the plastic still on the seats and car. No dealer has or will touch my gr86. All the basic maintenance is done at a local tuning shop or my garage. Its a beast. The boxer motor is the reason it drives and handles the way it does. You got a dealership fun bagged car dude. The car is fine its user error. I changed the oil on mine at 250 miles with motul 5w30 and again at 1000. Its tits man bummer about your story but the car is solid. Not sure about the oil pressure thing on track but as road car its way more fun than my m235. That car was also amazing but it was heavy and felt way different in corners. I bet the dealer and the manufacturer can tell the exact time someone bags a car from the computer and i bet you someone didnt respect that car at the dealership.

Its interesting how many have had issues and many have had zero issues. Someone made it to 150k miles on it with no problems at all aside from regular maintenance from what I heard. For my 86, I have yet to encounter any issues and its been a perfect car for my daily. I have had my GR86 for a little over 2 years now with no issues at all doing regular maintenance. Really sad to see this kind of shit happening to people.

my 2013 frs had 140k miles no mechanical issues. my 23 brz with 16k miles no issues.
Is it considered rare to make it to 150k? My Miata went to 270k before I had an issue too costly to be worth it. That seems super low idk.
It is a lemon. If it falls under factory warranty then keep taking back to dealer. That's why we buy a new ones. It is part of the peice of mind.

They tell you literally anything to convince you the sale is good, to get you in a vulnerable situation, then up the costs and say they couldn't get the quoted deal. The way they talk, their body language, mannerisms, you know its all a show. Its literally people upselling you for $$$, by any means. One told me I could drive it off the lot and my loan went through, then as im 5 minutes away (on an hour long drive) he calls me, tells me its actually in the shop, and that I would have to put $1000 down for them to hold it, before I have even test drove it. F*** dealerships.

Subaru performance engine pretty much known to blow up, I had an NA 2.2 for a daily never beat on always oil change, blew up. Only car ive ever had to fail an engine.
No, they aren't.. I've owned one for 17 years and been around them since I've been able to drive. The only problems Subaru engines have is when owners modify them without the proper tuning.

Cant say I have had even close to the same experience. My 2022 BRZ has been flawless. Tons of mods, FBO, flex fuel tuned, track driven, and just plain beat on. Car has been 100% perfect for 3 years (late 2021 purchase) now.
The car in this video was beat to shit and broken. That is obviously why somebody traded it in. It was likely tuned at some point and suffered detonation damage. That will cause cylinder wash, spark plug fouling, and misfires. Idk what repairs the shop told you they did, but in that short period of time they certainly didnt replace the engine or any internal components.
It's a Toyota problem. Not a Subaru problem. It's coming down to the individual tuning from Toyota for the Subaru supplied engine.

I am on several forums, social groups etc. I can promise you my car is driven harder and has more miles than 90% of all 2nd gen cars out there. Either my car is a unicorn or there a lot of bad owners who think they can treat it like a camry and never open the hood. It is NOT the same FA24 as all the others. Internals are completely different. Rods, pistons, bearings, valve springs, cams, high pressure fuel pump, harmonic balancer, air oil separator design are just a few things that are completely different between a low revving WRX FA24 and a high RPM BRZ FA 24. "I dont know what a tein is" 🤣🤣🤣

Hmmm, besides the usual used car precautions? I would say buy the absolute best Miata you can afford even if you gotta travel for it, an LSD equipped car is a MUST, depending on generation you’ll run into only minor issues but the early ND1’s have manual transmission issues so people typically swap the NC trans into the car, NB’s seem to be a tad more temperamental in the reliability department for some odd reason I know 2 people who have owned 3 different NB’s with different issues. Now, a lot of people will hate me for this but the NC2/3 is the best generation for people who are looking for the ‘whole package’ because a lot of young people end up wanting an NA then find out it’s a rattle trap with no power… but hey they have charm! Idk if that answers your question but they are the most raced car on the planet, super reliable, amazing mpg, parts are everywhere & it’s a very beloved platform so a ton of parts & knowledge exists for these little bundles of joy!

My 2023 GR86 10th Anniversary manual is awesome. My clutch went out at 2,000 miles of street driving. Dealer agreed to cover the parts but I had to submit a separate claim for labor to the Toyota corporate via their web site which was approved. 10,000 miles and 2 years later car drives great.
I traded my m235i for the gr86 and its been pretty amazing so far. You got either a lemon or someone at the dealer ragged out the car before you bought it

I almost bought one of these but ended up going for an E210 Corolla 6MT instead (easier with kids). No issues and loving the mod support. Looks like I dodged a bullet with the GR86. Sad really. It was my dream car too.
Next time you purchase a vehicle, ask the following and make sure you receive their response digitally over email:
1. If you have to do an engine tear down (do any work on the engine, gear box, transmission or any components of the vehicle) to determine if it's a warrantyable issue - who is responsible for that cost?
2. Are there any components of the car that I would have to pay a cost to diagnose an issue?
3. Under this warranty, what am I NOT covered for?
In your situation, you should be covered under warranty regardless. Contact your lawyer/solicitor and get a letter/email sent out.
I dont think I'll be buying another dealership car again until I'm spec-ing a brand new porsche. Even then, I prefer 996/997 over the new garbage

I had a 2015 FRS RS1 that was nice stock and then turbo changed it, then upgrade the turbo kit, then built(not blew) the engine and it make 480whp 360tq and never had an issue with it.
Was the best car I owned and wished I still had it. Everyone's quality degrades over time.

I had a Subaru BRZ that lasted me several years without a hitch. Now I have a WRX that have yet to give me any trouble. It's all dependent on the history of the car, and WHERE you got it. When buying pre-owned, get a certified pre-owned example if you can. AND an extended warranty.
The first gen BRZ/86's don't have the oil starvation issue, At least not like to newer ones. The first generation oil "starvation" is split second and extremely minor.
Insane to me how my Supra (BMW) has been the most reliable GR car so far. I’d love to get a GR Corolla or 86, but constantly seeing these issues come up is really pushing me away.

My 2013 Toyota 86 engine blew in May this year (Australia) 15km/h slowing down for a roundabout. As I had UEL headers and an ECUtek tune, Toyota won't touch it.

I feel you. I took the chance to buy a 2013 WRX that was listed for a really good deal. Didn't have a warrantly. I had no car because my other impreza had shit the bed (Over 200k miles). The dealer managed to cover up a ton of issues that have had it down in my garage for almost 7 months. I don't have the money to fix it nor buy a new car, so I've been ride sharing to college classes for months. I had my motorcycle over the summer, but not only is it very cold where I am now but someone vandalized it and I had to total it through insurance, and I'm waiting for my OSHP inspection.
Crazy that I relate to this. I have a Corolla Hatchback that is having numerous issues that shouldn’t be happening for a Toyota. Broken motor mounts at 47k miles, slave cylinder failure at 46k (that many have reported along with clutch failures), and now a noisy ISB. I drove my 180k mile RSX more spiritedly than my Corolla and that thing did not have the issues my car currently has
But the GT86 never had any of these problems right ? And the FA20 was also just a Subaru Boxer 4 Banger.
There was a valve spring recall, Although when I searched , I couldn't seem to find any actual instances of the springs failing. The FA20 does have an extremely minor oil starvation issue with high-speed right hand turns but it's literally a split second and the starvation is so little that it doesn't really do anything.
Dont stop applying pressure tell them youll tell the bbb i had a similar situation but i had bought a tlx my dream car from-a chevy dealership and 1 day after my engine blew up and they where taking forever to give me a answer so i kept just showing up to the dealer and asking for a solution and at the end of the day i got a check for all my money back and i had no warranty or anything i used that to buy my new tlx just dont stop applying pressure and threaten to report to the better business bureau and get your money back idk if you financed it or not but i also had my credit union apply pressure on them because i found out they work together often with that particular chevy dealership
ive already applied that pressure. I now have 3 open cases with corporate, notified the ftc, etc
Man I got a 24 brz and with 3k miles and it’s going good, I’m sorry you got the Toyota version. I was gonna get that one as well but when I went to the dealer after doing research I had a feeling Subaru was the better option even though people prefer the Toyota version.( I’ve had it since august of 2024)

I hope you've learned your lesson to not trust any dealership. There might be a handful of good ones out there, but 99% of them are just there to rip you tf off and take your money. Buy used and find a honest, reliable local mechanic, or just learn to work on it yourself.

It's less the dealers faults and more the manufactures fault. I used to work at a dealership as a tech. The screw over the mechanic doing all the warranty work. Most warranty to work is like paid at 50% rate. So the manufactures makes a fault like your engine then some poor mechanic has to eat it. And then since it had several come backs they are getting even paid less. The manufactures should cover the dealership and the tech at full pay scale so they can give good service to the customers.

The manufacturer pays the dealership once for the work performed, but the dealer is usually responsible for subsequent repairs for the same problem." it's simple google search. in your case Subaru makes a flawed engine and Subaru doesn't want to pay your dealership enough money to fix it correctly. then your dealership being shaddy doesn't want to eat it the cost and plays games with you until you go away. if Subaru paid your dealership enough money why would they turn it down? it would be just money in their pocket to fix your car or my car right? but that's not the case the dealership makes good money on 30k, 60k services and loses lots money on warranty work that might have a high come back rate like your engine problem.

Lemon Law the car. Sorry to hear about engine problems on a 2023 GR86. Its sketchy anyway because it has a Subaru engine but its a Toyota. You really think the Toyota technicians want to work on a Subaru engine ? I think the Toyota Supra is in that same boat with the BMW engine. Mechanics don't like to work on cross breed cars.

Feel bad for you my friend. I've owned this car for over two years now and have not had any issues, but I did buy it brand new, have not modified it and do not track it. Did you get yours used, or was it also new straight from Toyota? Either way, hoping things improve and they either finally correct the issues, or the legal process does some justice for you.
I think maybe it might just be that car, I bought a brand new GR 86 a little over a year ago and I’ve never had any issues with mine, I take good care of it, take it in for it scheduled maintenance and I’ve even taken it on 2 shortes separate Multi Day Road trips and it still works perfectly fine no issues, just a faulty car from the start.

I would echo the comments and try for lemon law. Recover financially as much as possible. The car was obviously never fixed right the first time, no engine should blow within a week. Also, toyota dealer techs arent nearly as experienced with boxers as Subaru techs. This really sucks and i feel for u, but kudos to u for being honest and realizing U had made a bad financial decision swayed by emotions. Ull almost never see other TH-camrs admit that. They would just bash the manufacturer only. U definitely paid too much for this car at $40k. My 23 brz limited was brand new OTD under $35k

If I had to guess based on the description you mentioned, it sounds like the engine keeps losing compression in different cylinders. I'm guessing it's valvetrain related and they keep repairing the engine (swapping cylinder heads most likely). Lemon law varies by state but I would definitely get in touch with your state's attorney general or secretary of state and see exactly what your rights are. I would insist on a brand new engine, or I would take them to court. Having them just put a full motor in it at this point is likely easier for everyone.

I bought a used 2013 Scion FRS with 40k miles . I owned the car for three years , even when you have all schedule maintence done on the car it doesnt matter . when my car got 88k miles
i noticed a knock rattle sound coming from the engine . I had the car checked out and was informed to get rid of car asap .
I had a 2015 series blue and it was amazing and reliable back then I think… I feel like the quality dropped when they refreshed it and put new gearing in it, in 2017 I think but it really got bad when they came out with the current gen. Seems like it would be amazing if Toyota would just stick to the basics of making cars reliable and serviceable for high miles… instead of fixing problems they come out with even more new vehicles that have different problems… instead of servicing the customers who already bought cars, they go after new ones to fuck over. They use to make a few cars and when something was wrong, they would put more resources into fixing what they already had and refining it for years and ending up with a car that has been engineered to run forever. Now their lineup has like 50 different cars and none of them are good investments.

I used to own a premium 2022 86 and I sold it after 9 months. The car out of the factory just didn't feel right. The power delivery was inconsistent, shifting felt sloppy, the clutch was unresponsive. I felt like toyota needs to revamp this car immediately because most the gr86 owner I know are leaving this platform for something else like the mx-5 or wrx.
Sorry to hear about your Toyota, but I feel for you even more with the BMW-it may bring its own headaches. I had a used 2010 BMW 125i (50k miles), and it was a constant struggle with reliability. My dealership quoted $10k to fix its issues, nearly as much as the car cost! Thankfully, a former BMW engineer with his own workshop helped me out for less, but the stress was still there despite how good that straight-six sounded. Now, I’m driving a used Miata ND2 with zero issues, and I’m done with German cars for life after that experience and sticking to Mazda. Regardless, I hope your old beemer doesn't have issues and I wish you the best of luck!

That's what happens when a new car isn't broken in properly. They ain't playing when they say baby that engine for 1,000. It's more like 1,500 on 0w20. 2,000 on 0w16. By the time you hit 1,500-2,000 you should be on your 2nd oil change otherwise all that debris microwelds to the internals. Of course RTV in the pickup could have been an issue too.
My suspicion about boxer engines wrecking Toyota reliability reputation coming to past. Turbo engines aren't Toyota's cup of tea either.
If you can, swap it? Like k24 or something if possible.
Man, this sucks to hear. I owned a 2014 BRZ Limited up until a couple years ago when I bought my new Nissan Z, and they are fun as hell. Slow, sure, but they corner like monsters and are super easy to control even when you kick the back end out. Even though my Z makes double the power, is more modern and has more creature comforts, I still miss my BRZ sometimes.
I hope you get this sorted. It sounds like that dealership definitely scammed you. Someone probably screwed the engine on this thing, they got it, did a quick patch job and resold it in bad faith. No way it blew up that many times under normal driving conditions unless it was just barely hanging on from day one.
It's not just the expensive Toyota models that have issues. My 2024 Corolla LE is a piece of junk, literally falling apart with only 3000 miles on it. Problems with the CVT transmission: rough shifting, choppy acceleration, weird noises from the suspension, steering and dash, poor quality plastics and exterior paint.
oof buying an e46 just to get around is nasty work. Dealership needs to make this right.

I have a 93 toyota mr2 and 04 wrx wagon. 200k miles on them and they work well. Cheap cars. I have a hard time finding newer cars... financially practical. I've had a few new cars in past. I do want a 2020 ND miata someday. I like the brz because I like rwd and boxer turbos. I can't bring myself to buy new cars. I'd rather gamble, buy a 5k old used car and it fix it up.
I wanted to buy a new BRZ/GR86, but couldn't find one on the lot, and was told I could order one and wait 3 months to get it. I gave up and bought a MINI Cooper S instead. People told me you will regret buying a MINI, but it's been problem free for over a year now. Both MINI and BMW's reliability has been among the best lately. Just the opposite for Toyota. If Toyota keeps this up they are going to start losing customers big time.

Wow what a terrible experience to go through! A new car should be a happy experience . I bought a 2015 FR-S new and beat the snot out of it for 4 years 50,000 miles with zero problems. Never went back to the dealer for anything but maintenance. This is obviously a lemon and I’m surprised Toyota doesn’t stand behind their product. Maybe Subaru needs to step up and admit a design issue. I remember the early FR-S’s and BRZ’s having engine problems , valve springs, but they were warrantied . I have a new Miata now and their 2.0 is a much smoother revving engine but I’ve heard some people are having transmission failures early on. Hope I have a good one. Seems like every new car has some issues lately.

Whatever bill of health or mechanical check ups are BS and generally only inspect the obvious to the eye. Buying an used sports car is always a gamble for it's unknown history and this should be the lesson moving forward with the BMW
@@jaits7 as a mechanic and long time engine abuser I have never heard of an engine with such low miles have problems with engine abuser.. I have had honda, mazda, Acura, honda that I myself abused more than anything I can think of including drifting and drag race with on some cars double the stock HP and never had a failure.. if you mean engine abuse don't change your oil that's one thing if you mean driving the hell out of a car is abuse that is not real.. a Miata I had had over 250k and hit redline every day and nothing happened, same thing with my Acura GSR 8k all day nothing ever happened at over 200k.. the only engine abuse I can think of that can be done to a car is drive it in one gear at redline the whole time as that would overheat the oil and cooling capacity..

Maybe it a rtv issue and the oil doesnt flow properly anymore causing stuff to fail. They can keep fixing watever fails but if a small clog remains somwhere in the engine it will keep breaking again and again. Complete engine teardown and cleaning everything out is wat you need by someone who knows how to do it, takes his time and does apply the new rtv correctly.

Hope you can rectify this. I have a 2013 FR-S I bought used at Carmax. I can't say enough good about them and the transaction and support. E.g their valet dented the car. They admitted fault and gave me a free smaller car from their lot to drive 'til they had the work done. It had a few coach oriented rattles somewhere inside & Toyota gave me a free rental 'til they fixed it. Took 'em 2 weeks!
So... in spite of the "first world" problems, I feel I got good service and support from both Carmax and Toyota. I live in SoCal.
Come on over to the BMW g42 platform. B48 and B58 are both absolutely great engines. Reliable, fuel efficient, powerful, and very tuner friendly. I got a 230i with well over 300hp and 350 tq with a simple piggyback, I absolutely waffle stomp GR Corolla and civic type R for less money, and I still have RWD, better driving dynamics and nicer interior.
Not sure if you checked (I’m sure you have) but I mean there is a huge problem With these cars and oil starvation due to the access of RTV the use getting caught in the pickup tube, that could be why each engine blows up on you mane

I'm so sorry about your experience with that car. Cars should be a source of joy with the occasional frustration or added expense, not the nightmare that you've lived the past 3 months. I hope you can get toyota to take the car back, as I wouldn't have any trust in the car left at this point. And then I hope you can use that money to find something that makes you happy.
