Every time I park right beside another performance car, they think i want to race! 😂
There’s a way to add the subwoofer to the base model also. You just need to get a remote signal from under the dash. Theres a few guides on Gr86.org forum.

I've looked into some options in my area, and even just for standard HPDE events, between the event cost itself and the typical quote for the required insurance, I'm already so close to a grand that simply paying for the fuel to and from the track and a single night in a local hotel pushes me beyond that threshold, which I'm finding extremely difficult to justify for a single-day affair in which I might only get to make a few laps at most. You're best off becoming a member at a track. VIR is two and a half hours from me and is $3500 to join and annual dues are $2500 with $175 per track day or $3700 for up to 18 events. Super expensive to get into. So it's at least $5000 for the first year. Super expensive. Big reason why you see Porsches, Mustang GT, and Corvettes. It's like golfing lmao. No one wants to sell a one time entrance onto their course. I think you're best off starting with a driving school and you can see how much you are willing to commit.
Doubt there”a a recall since very limited production and Toyota is better off using any potential loss to fortify there GR Corolla. Since Subaru is more concerned about building cars for geriatrics, Rtr is going to be low priority. Hopefully a class action law suite will give this company what it deserves.
@@chilledsapien I also doubt there will be a recall. The first gen 86/brz also has this same issue of subaru putting in insane amounts of RTV and some seem to run fine with high miles
I would go with the RF.. I wasn't a fan of top down motoring either, but went on an extended test drive in a 19 RF and it was really nice actually.. And kinda best of both worlds since the RF is a hardtop.. Literally the most reliable sports car on the market.. I just couldn't find one in my price range and was tired of waiting for a GR86, so ended up in a 987.1 Cayman S that had 8 years worth of service history for $32k.. If you like to drive on curvy roads.. Try a Cayman.. it's lifechanging lol.. Mid engine design is superior for corner carving... and before folks start screaming IMS issues.. that was mostly on the 986 and 996 (non-turbo) vehicle.. by the time the 987.1 and 997.1 came around, Porsche redesigned the IMS and only about 1-3% of vehicle have this issue.. and those failures were on cars with low miles that hadn't been driven hard and then all of sudden were driven hard by the next owner.. my example had 78k on it and was well loved by an avid PCA member.. The service history is what sold me or took away my apprehension towards getting a 'high-performance' German sports car.. that and there are a TON of Porsche specialist shops in my area that are highly reputable and MUCH cheaper than the dealership..
Thank you DaniiVision for all the feedback/insight on this. I ordered an Ignition red 2023 BRZ that’s coming in January. The cons you mentioned I’ve researched previously but you did a great job of explaining what to expect. Mainly the RTV issue and the loud cabin (road/wind/tire noise). I can deal better with the ride harshness but the cabin noise will take some readjusting coming from a 1999 Lexus GS300 which is fairly civilized inside NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) wise. The stock radio and speakers leaving a bit to be desired reminds me of the NC MX-5 Miata I had, but it could also be the stock stereo is average at the least but whats intruding is the road/tire/wind noise entering the cabin. As you mentioned these types of cars won’t be around for much longer I would think, I’m glad we still have choices like these. Rwd, manual transmission, lightweight, modern “analog” all things considered, etc. What I would have like to seen is a spare tire included, I just never liked the fix a flat in a can thing. I guess I’m old skool that way but it always feels better to have a spare even if it’s just a donut. As for the styling, I will say I would have loved the duckbill that comes on the GR86 to have also been included on the BRZ. Either way, cant go wrong with either car. I think this time around I’ll leave the car mostly stock, just gonna throw a Broadway 300mm convex mirror and a WC Lathewerks titanium sphere shift knob in the cabin. And have my friend who owns his own tint shop apply some 3M ceramic film for function and form. Protect the occupants and interior from the suns uv rays. Appreciate the content you are putting out, keep it up.
Thanks for the feedback Jeremiah! I also feel the car needs a spare tire it’s very unnerving driving around with only a can of fix a flat. Thankfully I can accommodate a spare and keep my subwoofer in the back.
@@DaniiVision Indeed, I will have to source a spare tire when I get mine. I read we can run the spare tire from the first generation models. Most people nowadays don’t know how to jack up the car and change out a flat. I guess with the abundance of roadside assistance services and manufacturers skimping out on the spare tire that’s the result.
I realized why most factory door speakers don't have much bass = warranty claims on rattling. Surprisingly I had a Jeep Patriot work vehicle = had 8-10" door woofers stock and had GREAT bass! sounded like SUBS!
Owning a 22 GR86 Premium I use android and my complaint is that its not constantly disconnecting but BLUETOOTH constantly disconnects multiple times throughout drives and you have to clear the annoying pop ups. And I'm not sure if its specific to the car or if abother issue but android auto runs behind heavy when youre getting directions, it is innacurate when it comes to distance to turns and where you actually are vs where you need to turn, havent had that issue in other cars so thats been really annoying too. Besides that I absolutely love this car! Just addressed the RTV issue and also baffled the oil pan to prevent any starvation or silicone intake 😅
7:23 I thought I was the only one who dislikes the unwanted attention. I'm introverted and always have people looking over at me and wanting to ask questions or race lol
Glad I get to say I’ve subbed before 1k, your gonna blow up, keep it up🙌 Also, I’m trying to buy one right now, just waiting to get the premium trim can’t waittttt
Jordan thanks for the Sub! I see a lot of Premium GR86 with Automatic trans for sale not sure if you are wanting a Manual those are harder to come by. Good luck!
Stay away from dealer markups, always negotiate for msrp/sticker price. If you don’t get the deal you want walk away. I traveled out of my state (CA) to Oregon to buy at msrp.
@@DaniiVision okay thank you so much I appreciate it, I’m return I’ll happily watch your informative video’s about keeping up to date with any issues and your pros & cons of the 86 thanks again 🙏
The silicone issue on the GR86 is confirmed to be overblown. A big youtuber and many others had no issues with the car after extended testing so they fixed it or the few people that had this issue didn't take care of their car properly.
I have the MY23 Subaru BRZ and the USB disconnect issue occurs for me too. When the Apple CarPlay disconnected, it also disconnected the dash cam I had attached through the USB port next to it. So it appears to be isolated to the two USB ports in the centre console. I haven't had that issue occur when only a single USB port was in use though.
I don't know how many owners have tried both the BRZ and the GR86, but my understanding is that the BRZ is not as stiff as the GR86. I am shopping for a new car now and I am considering one or the other. Do these Subaru engines still have the head gasket failures expected as the older models did?
I test drove one of these the other day and I really want one, but I fear that I'll get bored of it quickly. Mind you, I've never owned anything all that fast, but this car really feels like it's choking for more air and I think that the boxer engine might be the culprit. I get that they wanted the lower center of gravity, but they could have managed with an i4 built specifically with this chassis in mind. 😬
Lol I love your last con...... Happens to me all the time even though mines is turbocharged I don't race but I do get a lot of knuckleheads revving and drive by or cut me off so many times but I just laugh and wait till they crash or hit someone being stupid.
I’m 19 and I’m soon going to get this car.. I haven’t heard about this RTV, so im a bit worried. How’s the maintenance costs or how often would I need to take care of it ?
So far the costs have just been basic maintenance items, air filters and oil changes. No major issues so far. The RTV “issue” has only affected about 3-4 cars out of thousands if I recall correctly.
@@DaniiVision I am interested if you check your oil level ? I do very frequently and the 0W20 used I think is to thin. My oil drops to the half way mark at just about 2500 miles. I will try 5W20 on this current oil change today hoping it will slow down the dropping oil level. My second BRZ and both had oil level drop but my last BRZ a 2020 model had only gone through 2 oil, changes.
@@Tonga2 yes I check it once every 2-3 weeks. I’m curious how you drive your car, lots of WOT pulls to redline? I’ve seen people running 5w-30 for track days but with the cooler weather coming I’ll probably stick to 0w-20 for now as it’s better for cold starts.
@@DaniiVision redline?? Got my limiter buzzer set to 6500 because when passing a car the “odd” time and using 3rd gear it gets up so fast I need the warning to shift. I normally shift between 4-5000 rpms and do more out of town driving or touring so my car lives between 2500-3200 rpms so i’m not a hot dogger so to speak. A senior so I’ve been there and one it. Recent trip with highway miles and constant speeds I found it used more oil this time and most of the time, 95% the RPMs were just at 3000 or below. Owned 2 WRXs and never had oil level drop. My Outback Onyx is the same and the 2.4 turbo is great but lives around 2000 rpms or less with only a 6000 rpm redline. Toyota did not have their hands in its design.
@@Tonga2 yes Toyota only added the D4S system it’s 99.9% Subaru for sure. Not sure why you are having the oil level drop then it seems you use the car as intended and don’t beat it up. The temperature range on 5W-20 is a bit higher than the 0w-20 so it might be worth a shot if you are in fact burning oil.
Thanks for your no BS honesty. My BRZ is more daily so thanks for trade offs of suspension changes. I would add stock stereo sucks and I dropped in a JBL subwoofer. It’s livable but still can be improved. At 50 yo it’s tough on exit so for errands borrow wife’s suv. However if I can drive 20+ minutes straight I’m in the BRZ and on hilly road it’s heaven. For those with car play issues. I unlocked my phone and plug it in. Works about 95% of time with occasional reboot on road trips. Still if anything happens I will 100% buy another one
Not that I am glad you have rock chips but I am glad it wasn't just me. I started getting rock chips around 2k miles and thought I happen to get one with shitty paint, but this seems to be general
Great vid going over what it’s like living with one of these! I’ve been looking into what car I should get next and this was one on my list. I don’t know much about cars yet and don’t know how to drive a manual, but I’ve been really interested in getting this one and learning on it. Do you think this would be a good car to learn stick on?
I've highly consider PPF on many cars I've owned, some that cost $80k. I always decided against it because I can put that money aside and fix paint chips IF they ever happen. In my experience, for my area and driving, I rarely get rock chips.
@@DaniiVision I had a 2019 Bullitt Mustang. The dealership I bought it from started trying to buy it back during Covid. I had 4K miles on it and had it 2 1/2 years. They gave me 12k more than I bought it for. I had already went through 3 recalls. When I bought it I knew about the manual 6 speed transmission having problems and had law suit on it. I loved driving that car but Ford quality wasn’t there. I was looking at the Supra and a mechanic told me to stay away from it and the GR86. I started looking at the two Lexus that had the V8. They up the price from 59k to 80k. I’m thinking about the MX5 or Miata. In 4 years I’ll give it to my granddaughter. This green deal emissions thing they’re doing away with V6 and V8. Hey Carlos nice to hear you’re enjoying your car! The chime is easy to get rid of just put it in accessory mode and buckle and unbuckle the seatbelt 20 times cycle off and on the car and it’s gone!
@@DaniiVision I bought the seatbelt inserts off amazon..... and I saw a video on how to remove the instrument cluster/ dashboard to disconnect that damn chime sound
You could not be more right about the unwanted attention! Extremely frustrating. You know that the encounter will involve ignorance of some sort, guaranteed...wish there was an easy way to express that I don't care about a car scene.
OMFG they still haven't fix the RTV problem ?!! It's been there since 2012 ffs ! My GT86 has blown an engine because of this. This is just not acceptable from Subaru.
Some good options to choose from there, the STi would be a good year round car if you live in colder climate area that sees snow. Good luck with your decision 👍🏽
As an owner of a slightly modded 2018 6 Speed Mustang GT, I have no business pulling up next to you to street race because we are two different types of cars. BTW, I don't street race either. That's irresponsible and foolish. That said, I have 500 hp. I would destroy you. My car is made to do that. You'll beat me at canyon carving. It's what that car is made for. The road noise in your ride won't bother me. It's music to me. I have heard that the BRZ is a little more forgiving on the road than the GR86 because its suspension is different. That may be true, but like you, I think the GR86 looks better. When you change out your tires next time, please look into the BF Goodrich Comp 2 A/S W Speed tires. It's what I have on my Mustang. Supposedly they are a little noisy, but I don't hear them because my Mustang is louder. Anyway, they grip the road like Spider-man on my Mustang so they should be absolutely wonderful on your GR86. No one wants to sell a one time entrance onto their course. I think you're best off starting with a driving school and you can see how much you are willing to commit.
Just realized I’ve been following you on instagram this whole time 😂
I'm still on the fence about GR86 or just get a Miata RF. I don't really care for top down motor but those RTV posts I see are concerning
Both are great choices in my opinion.
Get the Miata. RTV issue is much serious (its not just the oil pan). Or wait till the recall.
I pick up my 24 trueno edition on Tuesday cant wait
great video, the Gr86 is only starting to appear on UK roads
As an owner of the previous gen and various other performance cars numbers in 3 figures....... Don't go to a trackday without a baffled sump
I have a GReddy baffle plate for the Gen 2 cars waiting to be installed once I drop the pan to clean the RTV but thanks for the tip 🤙🏽
Very honest video, Did they ever do a recall for the oil starvation issue?
Psh I love the looks of my BRZ. Solid video dude!
Thanks Deekboy333! 🤝🏽
Great review! Enjoyed your presentation and I'm looking forward to more of your content!
Thanks for the feedback itswonton!
Honestly brother my brz has none of those cons you’ve listed. It’s really great for me!
I also wanted to ask, have you experienced the hood shake at higher speeds, as I have read about?
(Owners Forums)
I realized why most factory door speakers don't have much bass = warranty claims on rattling.
Surprisingly I had a Jeep Patriot work vehicle = had 8-10" door woofers stock and had GREAT bass! sounded like SUBS!
Liked just because of your descriptive description
Thank you for sharing your experience with that car.
How’s the car holding up a year later?
7:23 I thought I was the only one who dislikes the unwanted attention. I'm introverted and always have people looking over at me and wanting to ask questions or race lol
Glad I get to say I’ve subbed before 1k, your gonna blow up, keep it up🙌 Also, I’m trying to buy one right now, just waiting to get the premium trim can’t waittttt
Jordan thanks for the Sub! I see a lot of Premium GR86 with Automatic trans for sale not sure if you are wanting a Manual those are harder to come by. Good luck!
Great stuff ✌🏽
Christian thanks for stopping by and subscribing!
Your videos are cool, *facts to opinions and being honest. 👍🏽….. good editing too bro . Keep making videos. God bless 🙏🏽👍🏽🇺🇸
I appreciate your feedback Dennis!!
Its a sports car ... its meant to have road noise so you can hear and feel the road
Find anything on oil pain?
What happened about set of yokohama wheels?
Arden, I Just finished up installing the coilovers so wheels are coming up, I’m just backlogged on uploading the videos but it’s coming.
@@DaniiVision Thanks bro, love your channel! Please keep up!
Hey man I’m looking into buying a GR86 by the end of this year got any tips to look out for when shopping for one?
YO, where I can I get this instrumental from the intro! 🔥
im waiting on mine to come in. :)
Met someone out there have mercy on your ass certainly. I. Don't
It’s definitely an issue with the USB ports, my CarPlay usually disconnects after about an hour. Hope they recall that.
I don't know how many owners have tried both the BRZ and the GR86, but my understanding is that the BRZ is not as stiff as the GR86. I am shopping for a new car now and I am considering one or the other. Do these Subaru engines still have the head gasket failures expected as the older models did?
They don't.
What camera gear do you use
Sony A7ii w/Sigma Lens - Dji Mjni 2 Drone - Rode Wireless Mic
Great review
You gonna be able to use that sub, when you have a flat? Your cons list sounds like you should have bought a camry. :D
Nice shots
Thank you
I test drove one of these the other day and I really want one, but I fear that I'll get bored of it quickly. Mind you, I've never owned anything all that fast, but this car really feels like it's choking for more air and I think that the boxer engine might be the culprit. I get that they wanted the lower center of gravity, but they could have managed with an i4 built specifically with this chassis in mind. 😬
I have the same problem with the Apple car play
Thanks for a very helpful review. As noted before, you will get lots more views if you cut the introduction.
I dont know if i got lucky or not but my speakers are loud af lol even with my exhaust and being on the highway i blast my music and it sounds amazing
Icyhotbrz maybe you did or I just have bad hearing lol.
@@DaniiVision 😂
Is the RTV a replacement for using a gasket ?
Yes, Subaru has been using it for years
Lol I love your last con...... Happens to me all the time even though mines is turbocharged I don't race but I do get a lot of knuckleheads revving and drive by or cut me off so many times but I just laugh and wait till they crash or hit someone being stupid.
You have a turbocharged gen 1 I am assuming?
Yes a gen 1 2014
what speeds are you getting 27-28 mpg at on the highway?
70-75
I’m 19 and I’m soon going to get this car.. I haven’t heard about this RTV, so im a bit worried. How’s the maintenance costs or how often would I need to take care of it ?
So far the costs have just been basic maintenance items, air filters and oil changes. No major issues so far. The RTV “issue” has only affected about 3-4 cars out of thousands if I recall correctly.
@@DaniiVision Ok ! This is a good car to have as a main? Even through winter?
@@Kaioken-kat if you live where it snows I would recommend snow tires for winter.
Added any oil between oil changes?
Not so far I have not. Then again I change my oil frequently every 4500 miles or so due to weather conditions in the desert and after track days.
Ok for a college student athlete this or the Type R ?
Type R is way more practical in terms of space and the ability to carry 4 full size adults. If that is not what you need then GR86 all day.
Subbed for calling it a “ducktail spoiler” not duckbill 😂
I like when my 86 makes me go “like this” tho😭😂
Not Sure, thanks for your comment and feedback
This car is in the Manual right?
Yes I have the Manual 6 speed
Not that I am glad you have rock chips but I am glad it wasn't just me. I started getting rock chips around 2k miles and thought I happen to get one with shitty paint, but this seems to be general
Haha it’s all good, the paint is very thin as it is on most modern cars.
Bought the 10th Anniversary, and I’m learning manual. Just get it. Get out of your comfort zone
I might put flat out suspension and crossclimate 2's on the stock wheels then it will be absolutely perfect for me.
I've highly consider PPF on many cars I've owned, some that cost $80k. I always decided against it because I can put that money aside and fix paint chips IF they ever happen. In my experience, for my area and driving, I rarely get rock chips.
Saludos. I'm retired 70 , if younger would get one. Still drive my 2006 subie sti and 98 Honda prelude once in awhile
Hola Piri Que tal. Those are still cool cars and yea getting in and out of this car is not very easy since it is low to the ground.
Any issues with the GR86?
Non so far
I hope the boxer engine holds up.
Only time will tell.
Going to EV crap. All the fun stuff will be gone. Your car looks nice. I subscribed to your channel.
Subwoofer worth it? Would you pair with better speakers up front?
Josephine, I would say the subwoofer is definitely worth it. Upgrading the speakers up front would be nice but I don’t really think it’s necessary.
Reliable
8k comin up on mine.....will probably drop the pan on this oil change comin up, to check the rtv isssue in the oil sump....love the car, daily driver and hauls ass....got the cvt in mine, Im a old head and love rearwheel drive like on my old monte carlo and triumph spitfire....oh....the sound system does suck, nothinn like my old alphine speakers, so i put a bluetooth booster on my phone and disconnected the fake engine sound...i will also get rid of that damn chime sound in the dashboard one day soon
Yuuup that USB port be playing to much 😂
Super annoying 😂
You could not be more right about the unwanted attention! Extremely frustrating. You know that the encounter will involve ignorance of some sort, guaranteed...wish there was an easy way to express that I don't care about a car scene.
Check you oil pick up tube
OMFG they still haven't fix the RTV problem ?!! It's been there since 2012 ffs ! My GT86 has blown an engine because of this. This is just not acceptable from Subaru.
Yea it’s unfortunate
Hey is ur car an manual 😅
Yes
This should be a recall. I'd be super disappointed.
Hmm, ur cons made me think..lol
Researching:BRZ, The Z, an STI..gr 86 an Brz 29 ish..others 40 plus..breaking the bank..lpl
Overall good vid..js
Some good options to choose from there, the STi would be a good year round car if you live in colder climate area that sees snow. Good luck with your decision 👍🏽
Honest
With that commute you could've gotten the supra 2022 which has better mpg.
I didn’t want a Supra, if I wanted better mpg and boring car I would get a Prius lol
Clapped out honda who wants to race is very accurate
Hahaha you feel me!

All I can do is shake my head when it happens lol
He cute😍

Great video.
Never, ever sit or lean on a car! Micro scratches!!!! Unless its your own car and you don't care.
