MLB Catchers Drills: Receiving and Blocking

  • Basic no runners on receiving stance and drill; followed by basic technique for blocking balls in the dirt. Note different stance--runners on base or 2 strikes on batter--with butt higher up and feet spread wider. Note throwing hand behind mitt when blocking (last few examples the catchers could do a better job shielding their throwing hand with the mitt while waiting for the ball--would prefer to see our catchers hold the hand balled up in a fist touching the back of the mitt while waiting for the pitch).

    I'm a catcher in high school and playing catcher is the hardest postion

      If you're a good catcher it should be a fun position because you're basically the leader of the infield! Both my older sons played catcher and pitcher,now they're 35 and 26. My oldest was a great catcher who made a few bad decisions and ran with a bad crowd behind my back,he was being scouted by a few teams but that went down the drain. My 26 yr old played catcher then went straight to the Marine Corp after high school. Now I have a 9 yr old who plays catcher, pitcher and second base,obviously he's to young to work only on 1 position but he's definitely has the skills to p[lay anywhere in the infield. Keep working at your position my friend, good catchers are very hard to come by. Who knows it may take you to the Big Show! Good Luck in your career!!!!

    as a catcher im torn between metal and plastic cleats

    • @kokijames1502
      @kokijames1502 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      If you only catch and aren't that much of a base runner than go with plastic but if you play other positions often or are a threat on the base paths, you should go with metal. Personally I prefer metal when catching, but that's me.

      Solerdude the equalizer is a training mitt so don't use it in games it's for practicing catching in the pocket.

    The blocking drill at 1:10 has me lowkey pissed. My whole life catching and every decent catching coach I've had makes me kick my legs back while dropping and if I rock forward like he is I usually get laps or push ups... but nope just a pro doing it casually...

    • @CatchingIQ
      @CatchingIQ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      both are great techniques... kicking your legs back helps if you are late into your block. But not sure you should be getting laps for being on time for your blocks. :/

      I don't know the different All-Star models (I'm a Rawlings guy anyway)--I'm really more interested in the techniques being shown here rather than the gear. That's the real value in watching this video.

    • @frankword9889
      @frankword9889 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HeadwatersDesign Absolutely!! The technique being shown is not just blocking, but directing the block to the mouth of the plate. Much like directional deflections from Hockey Goalies. Another thing for Young catchers to pay attention to is "butt up and heels flat" and the "frame catch". Arms never moved however, EVERY caught pitch in this clip was framed. Much different than the "80's" fundamentals. Thanks for sharing.

    I need to work on blocking. Does anybody know how to do these drills if I don't have a pitch machine

    • @wdeporter880
      @wdeporter880 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      GoProGuy You can line up some baseballs in a straight line in front of you with about 3 to 4 feet in between each ball. Then you can work on getting to the proper blocking position and dropping down in front of the ball. You move up the line and keep doing the proper blocking technique. You can also have someone throw the balls to you instead of using a pitching machine.

      Do with 2 people. get a bucket of tennis balls and home to third then start when the other person throws the tennis ball in the ground you block it same thing all the way to third base.

      Sam Orlowski I play in a u11 league so I'm always diving and making catches. I throw people out and catch foul pop flies, and I get bunts

    • @andrewcampbell9762
      @andrewcampbell9762 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sam Orlowski I know often you have to dive but my recommendation as a junior in high school is squat high enough to shuffle left or right and also have good blocking range, next if it's outside of your range of motion your best bet is to just to the backstop (as long as it's a deep backstop) and get ready for it coming off the backstop. Better than trying to get off the ground and find it

    Who n is it nessisary to block a wild pitch
    Like only if there is a runner on base or always

    • @FaWxReMix
      @FaWxReMix 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brady Bell You should always try to block the ball.

    • @TheNewbly
      @TheNewbly 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FaWxReMix It's not completely necessary with no one on. That's also assuming there isn't 2 strikes on the batter.

    • @enjoymuted5595

      Always try to block the ball. When your catching you set the mentality and energy for the rest of the team so if your out there busting ass and showing positive energy, the team will follow. Not to mention it hurts the pitcher's mentality when he sees a shitty pitch go to the backstop rather than a chested up ball

    • @mklq7494
      @mklq7494 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, the best spot for the hand is by the right foot, or left foot if the catcher throws with there left hand, it should also be loose.
