    I just crowched in front of a brick wall, our chimney, and bounced tennis balls at myself into the ground to practice the drop a million times. Worked like a charm.

    Great videos Coach. I show these to my 10-year-old who catches for travel ball teams in Alabama as well as my 13year old who is trying to make his school team. They have been a huge help to their games and they help me be able to teach them better. Keep them up!

    I learned some great catching tips for receiving and throwing down to second, but I never got past my fear of blocking the ball ( especially after a bouncing fastball at 85 tagged my cup!). 15 years later, I'm watching this for fun and realizing I could've mastered blocking the ball had I had these resources. It's an amazing time for any young person because, with their learn-it-all brains and do-it-all youth, they can get master-level tips for free from TH-cam. Amazing

    This rlly helps I'm a short stop/2nd base but this year my coach wanted me to catch I tried it and I was pretty good exept I could only get the decent ones and I didn't know how to block this rlly helped

    I loved the video..my coach(also my Dad) used to hit fungos when I did blocking drills...It eliminated any fear of pitchers that had some velocity in games...I prided myself in defensive catching...I am disappointed in a lot of catching fundamentals in the pros...some of techniques I see would be ok for softball..maybe but its sad..great video!!

    Hey coach I have not been doing to well lately the past 5 months I have been in a big slump I used to bat 3rd and play middle infeild on a select 14 u team but now I am sitting the bench all game and if the feild I am working my butt off and not seeing any results I am starting to lose motivation and get down on myself any advice to help

    • @lylehutz
      @lylehutz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I know this wasn’t directed at me, but my advice is to keep focusing on your mechanics and doing your work the right way. Don’t focus on the short term results. If you love baseball and you keep working hard it will pay off. I know plenty of people that sat the bench, kept working at at and eventually went on to start high school and college ball.

    Hey...i understand a "reaction" comes with "anticipation" (offspeed) BUT in my son case he gets chewed over spiked fastballs! His pitchers all been shown to throw breaking pitch at batter to break for strike instead of for strike that breaks in dirt..and change up OUT instead of also at back corner of plate...SO he never gets many chances at all to block after "anticipation" that iy be in dirt! What tryn ask is what drill can give him "reflex" to ball in dirt! We do the mitt up and told him if mitt dont have come up and time see ball hit dirt to flip it and drop knees...deff for ones str8 infront that can be at times 2 feet infront of the plate! Even worse the catcher that has to catch when he pitches gets the change up with drop and the curve to "show" blocking so dont get fussed at when my son spikes a fastball...even gets at a boy with a back hand pick! Its like a NO WIN and its hurting my son confidence cause he beats his self up even more than coach does when one gets past him!

    Leo, I noticed in this video that you rest your glove-side elbow on your left knee when waiting for the ball.
    To me it looks like it makes it more comfortable to set a lower target.
    Is that true?
    Thanks.

    Why put the throwing hand behind the glove, instead of off to the side? Seems like it's just asking for injury without adding anything

  • @tylerh8966
    @tylerh8966 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why would you want to put your other hand behind the glove? It takes more time and it risks your forearm to get hit. Could you just put it behind your back?

      If you put your arm behind your back, your chest is now not square. Idea is to use your chest to block and put the ball right in front of you. Keeping both arms in front helps do that- and gives a little more area too to block with.

    Unfortunately this style of catching no longer exists in MLB. The new school of catching is one knee which doesn't allow the flexibility to block a ball as shown in the video. Granted this new school of catching is easier on the knees and probably prolongs a career but it's not helping current MLB catchers to block a ball as consistently as the old school catchers.

    Nice informational video, but please find someone else to take the video. There's no reason to switch back and forth from side view to straight ahead. It's just distracting.
