On-field with a good vantage point/angle, it becomes easier to tell for the umpire. Plus, sound is also a key factor as the ball generally makes a distinct *pop* in the glove while the foot's impact on first is generally a pronounced *thud*. Sound may become less of a determining factor with crowd noise in some professional settings, but it's definitely used as much as possible with the eyes to make a solid judgement call
Ichiro was a perfectionist. He was once reviewing film after his hitting coach made a suggestion to alter his stance/swing. He said, "You're right!" He was surprised that the coach noticed something he had overlooked.
Cano’s bunting for a double is such a great heads up piece of hitting. To me, something like that is even better than hitting a home run. Especially if you really want to impress your coach. It takes more skill than you might think to bunt like that.
